Arsenal were the big winners last weekend – their 2-0 victory over Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to 5 points after five of the chasing six dropped points. Arsène Wenger’s side followed that up with an impressive result, beating Borussia Dortmund 1-0 in Germany on Wednesday night in the Champions League.
The Gunners travel to Manchester United on Sunday. David Moyes’ side were victorious again last week, beating Fulham 3-1 and closing the gap between them and 4th place to 3 points after Tottenham drew 0-0 with Everton. United are coming off of a disappointing 0-0 draw with Real Sociedad in the Champions League.
Chelsea will be looking to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat at Newcastle when they host West Brom this weekend. José Mourinho has won 51 of his 65 Premier League games drawing the other 14 and his Blues are heavy favourites to pick up 3 points this weekend.

Five games into the 2013-14 Premier League season and we’ve already seen our first managerial casualty. Sunderland relieved the duties of Paolo Di Canio on Sunday, the day after his side were thrashed 3-0 at West Brom.
The fiery Italian manager won just 2 of his 12 Premier League games in charge of the Black Cats and was winless in his final 9. Sunderland are the only team without a win this season; their solo point coming in a 1-1 draw at Southampton.
Moving forward to this weekend’s fixtures, Sunderland welcome Liverpool to the Stadium of Light on Sunday. Brendan Rodgers’ side are welcoming Luis Suárez back to Premier League action for the first time since April.

I was 3/4 last weekend with only Chelsea letting me down. Manchester United and Arsenal were comfortable winners as predicted whilst Sunday’s tip of under 2.5 goals between Southampton and West Ham was more than safe at 0-0.
Premier League sides performed well in Europe midweek with 5 of the 6 teams winning. Manchester United (4-2), Manchester City (3-0), Swansea City (3-0) and Tottenham Hotspur (3-0) all won by at least 2 goals too. Chelsea were shocked at home, losing 2-1 to Swiss Super League side Fc Basel.
Returning to domestic action, Chelsea host Fulham in Saturday evening’s televised game with José Mourinho looking to break this two-game losing streak.
To start the weekend, Norwich City host Aston Villa kickoff the action with both sides recording only 1 win in their opening four games.
Returning from Marseille midweek, Arsenal host Stoke City looking to extend their 6-game winning streak in all competitions.

Former Tottenham striker Les Ferdinand believes Gareth Bale’s move to Real Madrid has thrown down the gauntlet to his ex-teammates at White Hart Lane.
Bale became the world’s most expensive player earlier this month when his protracted switch to the Bernabéu was finally completed for a fee of £85.3 million.
And while the Welshman prepares to make his debut for the Spanish giants – possibly this weekend against Villarreal – Spurs will begin life without the 24-year-old at home to Norwich City on Saturday.
Despite losing last term’s stand-out player, Spurs have refused to feel sorry for themselves this summer, with boss André Villas-Boas recruiting several new players in an effort to reshape his squad.
And according to Ferdinand, it is up to those new faces in the dressing room to pick up where Bale left off.

Aston Villa have confirmed their top scorer of last season, Christian Benteke has requested a move away from Villa Park.
The 6’4″ Belgian striker netted 19 goals for relegation-threatened Aston Villa in his debut Premier League season to help Paul Lambert’s side pull away from the bottom three. Benteke has subsequently been linked to club’s finishing much higher in their leagues than the Villans.
Here are five clubs Christian Benteke has been linked to recently:
5. Tottenham Hotspur
With Emmanuel Adebayor being a flop in his first season (25 Premier League appearances, 5 goals) at White Hart Lane following his permanent transfer from Manchester City, André Villas-Boas’ side have strongly been linked with a move for Christian Benteke.
The Belgian striker played the sole striker role well at Aston Villa in being able to hold the ball up and bring both forwards; Andreas Weimann and Gabriel Agbonlahor into play from the wings.

Six years ago Fernando Torres landed in England as a highly-rated £20 million striker off the back of scoring regularly for Atlético Madrid for five successive seasons in La Liga.
24 months earlier Rafa Benítez had guided the Reds to a surprise Champions League victory, defeating AC Milan on penalties in the final, but had failed to build on this success in the league.
At the end of the 2006-07 season Liverpool had finished 3rd in the Premier League but some 21 points behind champions Manchester United.
Fernando Torres was the big money signing to take Liverpool from 3rd the season before his arrival into genuine Premier League title contentenders. At least that was the hope.
The Spaniard smashed in an impressive 24 goals in 33 Premier League games during his debut season in English football – only Cristiano Ronaldo (31) had more Premier League goals that season. Only Andrew Cole (34 goals in 40 games in 1993-94) and...

André Villas-Boas has confirmed in his weekly pre-match press conference that key Tottenham Hotspur defender Younès Kaboul is set to return to training, after a 5 month lay-off with a knee injury, at the start of next week.
This is a welcome boost for a team whose luck with injuries of late has been rather unfortunate.
Ledley King, Kaboul’s central defensive partner of last season – a season in which Kaboul finally came of age for Tottenham – was forced to retire as a result of a persistent knee injury at the end of last season. Scott Parker, last season’s player of the year, had missed the majority of this season due to an Achilles injury up until recently. Key midfielder Sandro has recently been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury and Jermain Defoe, Tottenham’s top scoring striker this season, has been ruled out...

The jury is still out on André Villas-Boas for Spurs fans and the football media alike. While some think he is undoubtedly the man to push the club forward, others are less convinced.
In some of the more malevolent cases (i.e. that of the majority of the tabloid press), there has been a witch hunt targeting Avb ever since his appointment as Tottenham manager, as there is with every manager who has any highlightable or exploitable characteristic – in this case it’s Avb’s age.
A lot has been made of the fact that a striker wasn’t brought in during the recent transfer window. To be brutally honest, as a Spurs fan, I would have preferred it if we had purchased a world class target man, but it’s not the end of the world. We still have Emmanuel Adebayor (whose return from the African Nations Cup is...

Tottenham manager André Villas-Boas wants to strengthen his midfield by signing Lewis Holtby from Schalke, according to the Metro.
The midfielder signed a pre-contract agreement with Spurs this month and was set to move to the Premier League for free when his contract with the Bundesliga outfit expired in July.
However, his transfer could be accelerated after a season-ending knee injury to Sandro which has forced the Spurs boss into making an early move for the Germany international.
Villas-Boas wants Holtby in time to play against Leeds in the Fa Cup fourth-round on Saturday, with the fee for the player understood to be around £1.6 million.
According to sources in Germany the deal is expected to be complete within the next 48 hours.
Holtby can play all the way along the midfield line, providing Villas-Boas with depth in all departments of his engine room.
Tottenham have also been linked with a move for Celtic striker Gary Hooper,...

Once more The Roman Emperor in charge of Chelsea has given a decisive, many would say premature, thumbs down to a manager who has struggled for winter-time form. Just 6 months after delivering an Fa Cup and Champions League (against all odds it should be said) Roberto Di Matteo has been shown the door and promptly shoved through it.
Again the Russian oligarch has shown a distinct lack of respect not only for the club’s history but also to the fans who are growing increasingly tired and embarrassed of the managerial merry-go-round occurring at Stamford Bridge. Whoever steps into the breach will have to deal with the same problems as Rdm; a toxic dressing room, embroiled in one racism controversy after another and a distinct lack of firepower up front. After the thrilling, but ruined Yorkshire derby last night that saw an idiot slap a former England goalkeeper, it’s off to a hopefully more civilized derby in North London for today’s early game in the Premier League between Spurs and table-toppers Chelsea.
Tottenham didn’t start the season at all well, with unwelcome attention falling once more on the methods and age of new manager Andre Villas Boas – but the past couple of weeks have seen a rapid improvement in fortunes and results, and Spurs look an entirely different prospect from those early weeks. Attention will no doubt turn to the former Porto manager once more, as he leads out his new side against the team who unceremoniously sacked him, and replaced him with a man deemed incapable and unsuitable by West Brom.

According to a report from the Metro, Arsenal are ready to lock horns with North London rivals Tottenham over the potential signing of Crystal Palace’s highly-rated attacker Wilfried Zaha, who is valued at £10million.
The report states that Arsene Wenger’s Gunners have identified the 19-year-old, who attracted a lot of attention in the summer, as a replacement for England winger Theo Walcott if the former Southampton man allows his contract to run down and leaves for nothing at the end of this season.
Thanks to interest from Spurs, Arsenal will have to make any move for the Palace youngster before the summer, as Andre Villas-Boas is also said to be a fan of Zaha and according to Metro was apparently impressed with the youngster’s performance for England Under-21s against Serbia on Friday, which they won 1-0.

16th placed Aston Villa make the trip down to London having drawn their last match 1-1 at home to West Brom. After a stuttering start, it appears that the Villa players are starting to come round to Paul Lambert’s style of play and seem to have turned a corner after the humiliating defeat they suffered at the hands of Southampton. However the apparent fall out between Lambert and star striker Darren Bent is unlikely to have a positive effect on the rest of the team, added to which the continuing fall-out between Paul Lambert and old club Norwich City can also be classed as bad timing.
Tottenham, meanwhile, having drawn 1-1 in Greece during the week in the Europa League, are likely to be raring to go after their 3-2 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend. With rumours of player unrest towards Andres Villas-Boas,...

Tottenham’s Gareth Bale scored a hugely important goal against Manchester United yesterday evening as Spurs put to an end United’s 23-year long unbeaten streak against them at Old Trafford.
Jan Vertonhen first put Andre Villas-Boas’ side ahead after just two minutes after exchanging neat passes with Bale before finding a way around Rio Ferdinand and sending a deflected shot off Jonny Evans past Anders Lindegaard.
Bale then added to his assist by putting Spurs two goals ahead just after the half hour mark when a long ranged pass upfield found Bale, who had charged up the length of the pitch to connect with the ball, expose the lack of pace of Ferdinand and find the bottom corner of Lindegaard’s goal.
Nani pulled one back for the hosts after half time, and Rooney, who climbed off the bench to replace Ryan Giggs on 46 minutes, got the assist in...

Manchester United have a dilemma to address in midfield. Winger Antonio Valencia is a doubt with an ankle injury, whilst Ashley Young is still out with a knee injury. That leaves Nani as United’s only available winger, and the Portuguese’ has endured a torrid run of form of late.
It remains to be seen meanwhile whether Wayne Rooney will continue his road to recovery following a a horrifically gashed knee he picked up against Fulham. The England International however did start in his sides victory over Newcastle in midweek, where he played over 70 minutes.
Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas meanwhile will restore the likes of Brad Friedel, Gareth Bale and Jermain Defoe after they were rested against Carlisle in the Capital One Cup midweek.
