Ashcroft will direct the “Old Haunts” adaptation from a script by in-demand scribe Aaron Rabin, who is hot off of the newly launched Marvel series, “Secret Invasion.” Zach Studin, president of Awa Studios, will produce the movie.
Since the world premiere of “Coming Home In The Dark” at Sundance, where the psychological thriller made a stir, Ashcroft has become an in-demand filmmaker, lining up projects with Agbo, Legendary and Netflix.
“James Ashcroft is a cinematic force, with an incredible vision for this explosive story that collides the genres of crime and horror,” Studin said. “His ability to capture heart-wrenching performances, while delivering gripping tension,...

Awa Studios announced this morning the upcoming release of The Ribbon Queen.
This new horror series reunites National Comics and two-time Eisner award-winning writer Garth Ennis (Preacher, The Boys) and artist Jacen Burrows (Crossed, Moon Knight).
Debuting July 26, the 8-issue comic series will tackle crime and punishment, revenge versus justice, toxic masculinity, and police corruption in present-day New York City. That it comes from Ennis and Burrows means we can expect this journey to get violent and gruesome.
The Ribbon Queen is “Set in the wake of summer 2020’s Black Lives Matter protests” and “follows NYPD detective Amy Sun. Detective Sun is working a grisly murder case when she discovers a unit within the department that is rotten to the core… and something even more terrifying that hunts them. Each time Amy narrows in on the corrupt cops around her, she discovers them literally unraveled and torn to ribbons. Detective...

Fremantle has deepened its relationship with Artists, Writers & Artisans, Inc. (Awa) by making a minority investment in the company.
Fremantle had struck a strategic development deal with Awa Studios, the film and television division of Awa, last year.
Awa is backed by James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems, Sister, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. In 2021, the company established Awa Studios, helmed by Hollywood veteran Zach Studin as president. Marvel alum Axel Alonso serves as co-founder and chief creative officer overseeing editorial output. Matthew Anderson, co-chair and president and Jon Miller, co-founder and co-chair, lead Awa’s executive team.
The two companies have revealed that the first project on the joint development slate after Fremantle taking a stake in Awa is “Devil’s Highway,” a thriller based on the comic series by Benjamin Percy and Brent Schoonover in which a young woman seeks to unravel a sinister mystery hidden in the dark underbelly of the long-haul trucking industry.

Fremantle, the production unit of Bertelsmann-owned TV giant Rtl Group, has made a strategic minority investment in Artists, Writers & Artisans (Awa), an independent developer of stories from creative talent working across graphic fiction, film and television.
James Murdoch’s investment firm Lupa Systems, an existing Awa backer, co-led the new financial injection, which also included new capital from long-term Awa backers and “a number of strategic individual investors with expertise in production, finance, sports, human rights and technology,” the company said. Financial details and the size of the stake weren’t disclosed.
“This investment signifies a deepening of the initial partnership made between Fremantle and Awa in April 2022, which saw the companies come together to collaborate on co-developing a slate of TV projects based on Awa’s rapidly expanding IP library,” the partners said. “Awa Studios, Awa’s film and TV arm, will benefit from Fremantle’s strategic input and investment,...

To Axel Alonso, there’s something that comic books are capable of that no other media can match. “Comics are the ideal medium for producing truly ground-breaking work that creates IP that can come alive for generations,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Comic fans are in the vanguard of pop culture — they are incredibly discerning, so when a character, story or series resonates with them, you know you have a hit on your hands.”

This article contains The Falcon and the Winter Soldier spoilers.
Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 2 is much less of a slow burn than the first episode. Not only do we actually get Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes sharing screen time together, and a better understanding of what new Captain America John Walker is all about, but we get a host of new Marvel Comics characters introduced to the MCU!
There’s a lot going on in this episode, so let’s start digging in to all the Marvel goodness to be found…
The Star-Spangled Man The title of the episode is of course a reference to Steve Rogers’ tenure as a piece of propaganda in Captain America: The First Avenger, when he was sent out to convince people to buy war bonds. Two episodes into “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” and we’ve officially met two new Captains America — and now a future Young Avenger. Once again, the MCU is cherry-picking pieces of comic lore — this time with Isaiah Bradley and his grandson, Eli.
We meet the Bradleys only briefly in “The Star-Spangled Man,” just after Bucky and Sam get thoroughly bested by the Flag Smashers. Even with the help of the new Captain America, who we now know for sure is John Walker, the freedom fighters come out on top and escape with stolen medicines.
But as it turns out, it’s not just the one Flag Smasher that Torres took on last week who’s super strong — there’s eight of them. The source of their strength? Something derived from the serum that created Bucky and Steve. And also, Isaiah Bradley. According to Bucky, Isaiah “was a hero. One...

Never underestimate the power of a good cover. I’m not just talking about sticking a poster shot up on the front, as Marvel and DC are likely to do these days, but an actual cover that gives you a brief taster of the story, that intrigues you enough to then pick up that book. Devil’s Highway did just that, standing out from most of the other covers I was leafing through. The old school, noir style cover was intriguing enough, but the muted colours were in sharp contrast to the bright red shoe lying front and centre. Why was it there? Who’s was it? The hint that something bad may have happened is always far more effective than showing something bad happening. So hats off to Awa’s Cover Editor and Cover (and interior) Artist Brent Schoonover,...

Sister has invested in Awa Studios, a new comic book and digital media publisher, Variety has learned.
The company is unique in that it is owned and operated by the creators. It was founded by Marvel alumni Bill Jemas and Axel Alonso, along with Jon Miller, the former CEO of News Corp, Digital Media Group. The company was funded by Lightspeed Venture Partners and James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems.
The deal was led by Elisabeth Murdoch, along with Sister Global CEO and head of Sister La, Stacey Snider and partner Jane Featherstone. Elisabeth Murdoch is James Murdoch’s sister and Snider ran 20th Century Fox, the film studio that the Murdoch family owned until selling it to Disney in 2019. It was Miller, a Hollywood veteran, who helped set up the Awa team with the investors.

Throughout film history, superheroes have been white and male. But after the success of Wonder Woman and Black Panther, all that is changing – and fast
‘Really? We now have a half-black, half-Hispanic, gay Spider-Man?” This was the reaction of conservative broadcaster Glenn Beck in 2011, upon learning that Marvel was introducing a new Spider-Man named Miles Morales, who was not white. Morales wasn’t gay, it turned out, but still, the move was seen by some critics as a publicity stunt, or pandering to political correctness. Beck blamed the Obamas, which was actually not far off the mark. The new Spider-Man represented “the diversity, in background and experience, of the 21st century”, explained the Marvel editor-in-chief, Axel Alonso, including its “president of mixed heritage”. But Beck also linked the news to a speech by Michelle Obama in which she declared that Americans were “gonna have to change their traditions”, implying that...

Exciting news came from Marvel Entertainment recently as they have announced they have a new editor-in-chief. Axel Alonso has served this role in the company since 2011 but has now made the decision to leave. The person chosen to replace him in this role is C.B. Cebulski. Cebulski has worked at Marvel Entertainment in a full-time capacity since 2002 when he was hired to work as the associate editor. This is not Cebulski’s first promotion as in 2011, his talents and experience were recognized when he was promoted to vice president of international brand management. Now that Cebulski is in

By now, you’re probably familiar with the concept of Old Man Logan, a gritty take on an older, more grizzled Wolverine that saw him outlive many of his peers. And since Mark Millar and Steve McNiven launched what can only be described as a modern classic back in 2009, we’ve seen their story not only influence a major motion picture, but that particular version of Logan has actually been integrated into the Marvel Universe proper.
Having said all that, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that the House of Ideas would want to go down that road again. This time, though, they’re shining the spotlight on the avenging archer with Old Man Hawkeye, a prequel occurring five years before the events of Old Man Logan. In other words, this’ll “be set 45 years into the future, taking place in a darker world where the heroic...

Even though we were promised no major crossover miniseries for at least 18 months after the conclusion of Secret Empire, that doesn’t mean there won’t be other storylines that’ll shake the Marvel Universe to its core. In fact, the House of Ideas fully intends on starting 2018 with a bang, thanks in no small part to Avengers: No Surrender.
Now, if this seems confusing to you at all, know that the difference between No Surrender and something like, say, Civil War II or Secret Wars is that this particular arc won’t be told throughout the course of a limited series. Instead, it’ll span the pages of some other ongoing titles, namely Avengers, Uncanny Avengers and U.S.Avengers.
From that, you were probably able to deduce that those three unique teams – along with Voyager, “the greatest Avenger you’ve never heard of” – will be joining forces...

Marvel Comics has announced that they are releasing an Old Man Logan prequel comic book called Old Man Hawkeye. The comic will be a 12-issue series that will center on the heroic archer as he embarks on a journey of his own as he fights to "avenge his fallen comrades while he still can". The comic is set 45 years in the future and five years before the events of Old Man Logan. The news comes from NY Daily News, who reports:
Like that original series, "Old Man Hawkeye" takes place in a dark world where Marvel's most ruthless super villains have banded together and overthrown the Avengers, leaving only a few survivors.
The series is being written longtime Daily News reporter Ethan Sacks, and when talking about the comic he said:
"In this story, he's losing his vision and that sort of forces him to confront something really horrible that...

Are you tired of major comic book publishers spoiling deaths, returns and other significant happenings before anyone has a chance to even read them? Yes? Well, then you must be in space, because nobody can hear your screams.
As you may have guessed (and no thanks to the headline), that proud tradition continues into this week, with the House of Ideas completely blowing the lid off their highly anticipated Marvel Legacy one-shot. Yes, we knew to expect a huge return, but what’s the satisfaction that comes with surprise in comparison to boosting sales?
When recently speaking with ComicBook.com, Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso let the cat out of the bag by saying that Wolverine is returning this week – and he’s bringing an Infinity Stone with him:
“Yes, Logan is back from the dead. After three years of a Logan-free Marvel Universe, Logan is back, claws popped and ready for action.

For some time now, we’ve been talking about the Marvel Legacy one-shot slated to arrive in comic shops this September and understandably so. Spanning fifty pages, this oversized issue set to be written by Jason Aaron (Mighty Thor) and illustrated by Esad Ribic (Secret Wars) should not only make for a definitive read, but will also set the tone for the next year of story arcs planned by the House of Ideas.
One aspect about this standalone tale that caught our attention is that it’ll reveal the group that essentially served as the first Avengers, whom existed back in 1,000,000 B.C., to be exact. While it’s currently unknown if they’ll come across anyone resembling Raquel Welch, Marvel has released a pretty nifty trailer in the interim in order to get us geeked.

I've been keeping up with Secret Empire since the beginning. I've been intrigued at every step. It shows a character who we have known and loved for years in quite a different light. What Steve Rogers would have been like if he was secretly raised Hydra. One of the most important things was that he wasn't completely evil when he took over. He had some good in him, as he was worthy enough to lift Mjolnir. But, it looks like he's been going down a dark path.
The New York Times recently revealed a special scene from the newest issue of the Secret Empire comic which will be released on the 30th. The scene showed the good ol' Cap that we know and love beating the ever loving crap out of Hydra Cap with none other than Mjolnir. Here is the art that was revealed:

Alright, Marvel, calm down. We get it. There's a Hulk-Wolverine Hybrid Coming. The two most dangerous beings in the Marvel Universe are combining to create something crazy. I don't mind the teasing, but if you are gonna keep teasing at least give us something more.

But as of what is going on, or why wolverhulk exists, we have very little knowledge. This new image tweeted by editor-in-chief Axel Alonso, has just a hulk fist with wolverine claws coming out of them. To be honest, it reminds me of the Hulk hands you can buy at Walmart and then someone just got some Wolverine claws and put them on top of it.

I've been reading Marvel Comics for the past ten or so years, and I've kept up to date on all the stuff that has gone on. The wars, the invasions, the deaths, and rebirths. Something that Marvel likes to say every now and then is that they're gonna break the internet with what they are doing.
What does this mean though? Like really? In my opinion, there has never been anything so massively crazy that everyone on the internet just smashed their computer or stopped browsing. The closest thing to breaking the internet I can think of is just bombarding message boards and reddit with discussions. So if that's what they mean, great. But even that wouldn't do it.

To Marvel Entertainment,
Last week I read X-Men Gold #1 and, controversy aside which I won’t be getting into as you have gone above and beyond to address the issue properly and professionally, it really invoked a lot of strong feelings in me. Because of that, I’d like to talk about the X-Men and what they mean to me.
I first discovered X-Men on television when I was in elementary school. I remember watching the first episode and immediately being sucked in. To this day, the Sentinels are still menacing to me and I’ll always have a fondness for Jubilee, Rogue and Storm. I remember the time between Saturday morning after the episode finished to the next Saturday felt like an eternity. I was a shy kid who knew he was queer, but I didn’t understand it. Saying a lot happened in the world of comics this past week is a gross understatement. Between MoCCA Fest in the east, WonderCon in the west, the poor performance of the Ghost In The Shell live action remake, and the reports coming out of the Marvel Retailer Summit, I could have column fodder well into May. I’ll try to touch on a few of the points that are important to me.
For starters, I wasn’t at WonderCon, but you should read about it here.
Let’s start with MoCCA then. I wrote about MoCCA last year as well. For those not in the know, MoCCA stands for the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art. It’s a festival that’s been going on here for the past fifteen years, celebrating the indie side of comics as well as illustration, fine art, and creative innovation. This year featured big name guests including David Lloyd,...

So about a month ago, we all were shown an interesting image of a Hulk looking thing with Wolverine looking claws in a test tube. Well, some new light has been shown on what many are calling 'Hulkverine". That sounds terrible. Please say they get a better name for it.
Anyway, the largest mystery was who or what this creature is considering Banner is dead and original Wolverine is dead. Now granted, this could be some weird resurrection cult. In a different issue of comics, namely Uncanny Avengers some ninjas from the Fist which is like a weird offshoot of the Hand stole Bruce Banner's body and tried bringing him back to life as a Hulk Ninja. Ya. Kindof the worst combo in the world. Take what is quite possibly the Worst stealth character in Marvel and make him a ninja. That's like turning Spiderman into a responsible adult.

Not long ago, Marvel dropped a simple, enigmatic teaser for something called Generations. At the time, no specifics were given, but it got everybody talking due to it depicting multiple versions of superheroes hanging out and also because it was painted by the incomparable Alex Ross. Who doesn’t love his work, am I right?
Anyway, the House of Ideas have finally pulled back the curtain on the project that will – get this – unite those who have taken up the guise of various heroes both past and present, just as the artwork hinted. I know, it all seems a bit confusing and will likely remain that way until this 10-issue series hits stands this July.
As of now, we know which heroes will join forces, along with the writers who will craft these stories. Artists have still yet to be named, but here’s the list made available:

The fun and excitement is happening each and every week at your local comic shop! Today, Marvel is excited to announce a new marketing initiative specially designed to increase comic store foot traffic and bring new readers into stores through the use of GeoTargeting technologies.
“Marvel is always looking for ways to get more people through the doors of their local comic stores,“ says Marvel Svp Sales & Marketing David Gabriel. “With these new tools at our disposal, we’re looking to tap into fans of Marvel television, films, animation, games and even our licensed product and turn them into comic book readers. Not only will these prospective readers learn exactly where their nearest shop is, but all the great Marvel comics waiting for them when they get there!”
Once again leading the way in how comics reach larger audiences, these new technologies will provide both new, casual, and hardcore fans...

When it’s all said and done, 2017 may very well prove to be the year of the grizzled superhero. Not only is Logan set to arrive in theaters this weekend amid high critical acclaim, but the comic book series known as Old Man Logan aims to keep on going strong when a new creative team boards the title in June.
As for who will be handling the titular character’s adventures, readers should be pleased to know they’re in the capable hands of none other than writer Ed Brisson (Bullseye, Iron Fist) and artist Mike Deodato (Thanos, Avengers). And if the latter’s cover is any indication of how Logan will appear in the story itself, I think that’s a treat in its own right because his bulking, sinewy rendition makes me recall Barry Windsor-Smith’s classic Weapon X series from 1991.

Although not many may come to think it, Hulk and Wolverine have been inextricably linked since they went toe to toe in Logan’s first appearance way back in The Incredible Hulk #181. As time’s gone by, the two have repeatedly locked horns, teamed up and even carried their storied history over into other media, namely the 2009 animated film Hulk vs. Wolverine, which I highly recommend checking out.
Well, it looks like Marvel is taking the next step by combining the two. For now, all we have to go on is a cryptic image Tweeted by editor-in-chief Axel Alonso that was captioned with “Under Construction” that shows some kind of Hulk/Wolverine hybrid in a stasis tube (check it out above).
Now, let it be known that Logan met his end in continuity proper in 2013’s Death of Wolverine, with X-23 since taking his place. Likewise, Bruce Banner recently bit...
