A Liar's Autobiography offers a colorfully animated look at Monty Python's late Graham Chapman.
The 2012 sort-of documentary comedy film A Liar’s Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman offers a humorous examination of the life of you-know-who, a member of the legendary British TV comedy troupe Monty Python’s Flying Circus.
The late Chapman, the man who co-wrote Python’s immortal “Dead Parrot” sketch, became himself “demised” in 1989 at the age of 48 from throat cancer. But in seeming preparation for this event, Chapman years earlier recorded himself reading from his book A Liar’s Autobiography Vol. VI, a fictionalized account of his life published in 1980. Now, directors Bill Jones (son of Python member Terry Jones), Jeff Simpson and Ben Timlett, with help from animators at 14 studios, have turned those tapes into a look at the very creative and very complicated Chapman.

Phew! Even if there wasn’t a ‘Monty Python’ in the headline, you could tell it’s them just by the size of the title, heheh. In any case, the rumor about the new Monty Python film has been around for a while now, but ever since the last October’s trailer and clip and some photos, there has been nothing much around to keep our attention, unfortunately.
This trailer/clip for A Liar’s Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman is animated in old-French-cartoons style (at least it reminds me of those I’ve seen), and it is titled ‘Commisioned to Write’ (thanks to Fandango):

A Gay Old Time: Documentary/Animation Hybrid a Loving, Original Tribute
Co-directors Bill Jones, Jeff Simpson, and Ben Timlett (two of which were involved with a 2009 documentary series on Monty Python) have managed to create a stupendously odd and entertaining 3D animated film, A Liar’s Autobiography, that’s both an homage to and grossly exaggerated glance at the life of Graham Chapman, renowned member of Monty Python’s Flying Circus. While Chapman passed away in 1989 from throat cancer, this animated feature utilizes his voice from tapes he made in 1986 from the narration of his own book “A Liar’s Autobiography: Volume VI” (taped in Harry Nilsson’s studio).
We’re introduced to an animated version of Chapman, performing as Oscar Wilde on stage opposite close friend and colleague, John Cleese. Forgetting his next line, a spaceship beams through the roof and scoops him up into a newly animated form,...

Several years before his death in 1989, Monty Python member Graham Chapman recorded himself reading excerpts from his book, A Liar’s Autobiography, an ostensibly fictionalized account of his life. These recordings of his surreal, darkly comic work serve as the basis for this animated adaptation, in which Chapman and (most of) the other Python troupe voice themselves and various other characters. Directors Bill Jones, Jeff Simpson and Ben Timlett have amassed a number of animation houses to bring the different segments to life, each in a different style....

Graham Chapman, probably best remembered as "the dead one from Monty Python," writes and stars in the animated movie of his own life story, "A Liar's Autobiography." How is that? Well, although Chapman selfishly dropped dead in 1989, he had taken the trouble to record himself reading his comedic book, "A Liar's Autobiography," published in 1980. And those recordings have now ingeniously been used to provide Chapman's voice for the 3D animated feature of the same name as directed by Bill Jones and Jeff Simpson. Fellow Pythons John Cleese, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Terry Gilliam also turn up, playing themselves and other characters, along with a few surprise guests. Not a true documentary, not a Monty Python film, "A Liar's Autobiography" is Chapman's own take on his bizarre life (as assisted by the directors) and his search for self-knowledge, bringing Chapman back to life in an ingenious tale of...

A Liar’s Autobiography, a loose adaptation of late Monty Python star Graham Chapman’s 1980 memoir, is a fiendish concoction indeed, utilising audio recordings of the book made by Chapman prior to his death, played over an aesthetic which smatters together 14 different animated styles, mimicking the likes of South Park, Monkey Dust, cel-shaded video games and faux-claymation. What’s more, it’s in 3D, making its unorthodox visual presentation all that more striking.
Simply, fans of Python will be very much at home here, the troupe’s unique brand of absurdism penetrating right through the snappy 82-minute runtime. It also sees the Python lot at their most wickedly crude, with the likes of phallic roller-coasters and talking piles of vomit frequently littering the screen. Chapman’s barmy narratives include detailing everything that brought him to Monty Python, telling a number of scarcely believable yarns about his...

The director of A Prophet reveals plans for a musical, a chance encounter with John Landis, and free G&Ts for Python fans

French director Jacques Audiard is set to surprise fans by making his next film a musical. The film-maker who, through films such as The Beat That My Heart Skipped and A Prophet, has become one of the most exciting talents in world cinema, told me he'd been working on the idea for some years. "Oh yes, it will have big dance numbers, choreography, the whole thing. I have always loved the MGM films and also Jacques Demy – my problem is I don't write lyrics or music, so I have to rely on others." Audiard was at the Lff with Rust and Bone in the official competition, a film featuring a terrific performance by Marion Cotillard and a score by Alexandre Desplat as well as some...

★☆☆☆☆ Monty Python fans may rejoice at news of Bill Jones (son of Python's Terry Jones) joining forces with fellow directors Jeff Simpson and Ben Timlett for their take on the late Graham Chapman's 1980s liberal spin on his own life, A Liar's Autobiography (2012). This new mockumentary of the same name follows in a similarly fallacious vein, attempting to capture Chapman's camp, witty and surreal personality through a series of animations. At times these animations are reminiscent of American-born Python Terry Gilliam's unique style, but vary in success and quality as they shift between CGI and traditional hand-drawn characters.

The perception of Graham Chapman is that of a comedy genius touched by melancholy, introspection and the occasional soft cushion. He died in 1989 leaving a pipe-puffing legacy of grand comic moments and extreme silliness, as well as a series of audio diary recordings that form the basis of A Liar's Autobiography, a unique animation that tells this bittersweet life story in the words of the man himself. The animated kinda-biopic took its turn on the BFI London Film Festival red carpet last night, with an Empire-sponsored gala that was supported by Pythons Terry Jones and Michael Palin, as well as filmmakers Bill 'son of Terry' Jones, Ben Timlett and Jeff Simpson. The trio enlisted all the surviving Pythons, bar Eric Idle, to provide voice for chapters that are presented using just about every form of animation know to man, apart from that one where you draw pictures on a pad and flick it really fast.

We all love Monty Python (if you don’t, just pretend you know what I’m talking about and keep going). And by that standard, anything with the name in the title must be gloriously brilliant. It’s going to break comedic ground by its ability to comment on the highest level of societal discussion. At the same time, it’s going to be the silliest piece of nonsense you’ve ever found yourself gut-splitting, on the floor, laughing at — while crying, as well. A Liar’s Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman, however, is not a Monty Python film. It is an act of self-indulgent nostalgia by a group of men who love their colleague. In 1986, three years before his death from cancer, Graham Chapman decided to conduct an experiment by taping an audio book that would serve as a fictional telling of his life. It...

If 'Always Look On The Bright Side' brought a tear of nostalgia to your eye during the Olympic closing ceremony, the animated Graham Chapman 3D kinda-biopic A Liar's Autobiography could seriously open the floodgates. It's not out in the UK until January next year, but BFI London Film Festival-goers will be able to feast their eyes on the comic silliness and serious bits on October 16 at Empire's - that's us! - gala screening."There's a lot of unprecedented things about this film," explained co-director Jeff Simpson when we spoke to him at the Lff launch. "I don't think there's ever been a film written by and starring a man who's been dead for 23 years."A Liar's Autobiography takes the former Python's autobiography, using the audio version he recorded in Harry Nilsson's studio before his death, and overlays it on animation styles from claymation to traditional hand drawn techniques and the rarer oil-on-glass approach.

Monty Python is a name that continues to ring synonymous with sketch comedy, long after members of the troupe have died, retired, or moved on to other careers. Before his death, a member of the group, Graham Chapman, wrote a fake memoir titled A Liar’s Autobiography (Volume VI). Last year, news emerged that an animated adaptation of the book was in the works, with 14 different animation studios each tackling one part of the book. But the real coup occurred at the casting level, with former Monty Python members Terry Gilliam, John Cleese, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin all lending their voice to the movie, along with recordings made by Chapman prior to his demise. Directed by Bill Jones, Ben Timlett and Jeff Simpson, the minds behind Monty Python’s Flying Circus, the film now has a trailer, which can be seen below.

Monty Python member Graham Chapman passed away in 1989, but his story's being told in film form using his own (not terribly truthful) words. Graham Chapman played many key parts as a member of the British comedy group Monty Python. On their BBC sketch show, Flying Circus, a dry demeanor made him a perfect straight man. On film, it was a quality that shaped his reluctant Christ figure in The Life of Brian — and his befuddled King Arthur in Monty Python and the Holy Grail — just two of the countless roles he took on before an untimely death in 1989. Now, 23 years later, his life is (kind of) the subject of the animated 3D comedy A Liar’s Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman.

Now that Ellen Barkin has more than a Twitter box to address the NBC affiliate station in Utah banning The New Normal from their schedule, she has lots more important things to say about it. Jeff Simpson, CEO of Bonneville International, parent company of Salt Lake City NBC affiliate Ksl-tv, told the Deseret News in a statement last week: "After viewing the pilot episode of The New Normal, we have made the decision to keep it off our fall schedule. Ellen Barkin came out swinging again against the NBC Utah affiliate that decided not to show The New Normal. “Yes, it’s an affiliate’s right to ban something but I think it is censorship,” said the actress told Deadline today of the Ksl-tv decision. “For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time,” announced Jeff Simpson, CEO of the station’s parent company, Bonneville International last week. Soon afterwards Barkin took to her Twitter account, calling the affiliate’s decision “blatantly homophic.” On a conference call today, Barkin, after some initial hesitation, reiterated her position and asked why Ksl-tv would air a violent show like Law & Order: Svu but not a show about “a same sex couple that want to have a child.” Created by Glee boss Ryan Murphy and Ali Adler, The New Normal is about a gay couple that is...

"The New Normal" star Ellen Barkin took to Twitter to express her outrage over a Utah NBC affiliate refusing to air the new series about a gay couple who is having a baby via a surrogate.

Barkin, who plays the grandmother to the surrogate mother on "The New Normal," shot back at the station and criticized their programming decision.
GLAAD has also come out in defense of the NBC comedy. "Same-sex families are a beloved part of American television thanks to shows like 'Modern Family', 'Glee' and 'Grey’s Anatomy,'" GLAAD President Herndon Graddick said in a statement.

Los Angeles, California (X17online) - After an NBC affiliate decided not to broadcast The New Normal in Utah this fall, GLAAD is speaking out to criticize the decision. The new comedy tells the story of a single mother who becomes a surrogate for a same sex couple, and was deemed "inappropriate" by Utah station Ksl-tv. "Same-sex families are a beloved part of American television thanks to shows like Modern Family, Glee and Grey's Anatomy. While audiences, critics and advertisers have all supported Lgbt stories, Ksl is demonstrating how deeply out of touch it is with the rest of the country," GLAAD president Herndon Graddick said in a statement. "After viewing the pilot episode of The New Normal, we have made the decision to keep it off our fall schedule. For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time," CEO of Ksl Jeff Simpson...

Ksl-tv, an affiliate on NBC in Utah, will not air Ryan Murphy's The New Normal this fall, labeling the sitcom - which focuses on a gay couple and its surrogate's family - as "inappropriate" material.
“From time to time we may struggle with content that crosses the line in one area or another,” Jeff Simpson, CEO of Ksl’s parent company, Bonneville International, told the Salt Lake Tribune. “The dialogue might be excessively rude and crude. The scenes may be too explicit or the characterizations might seem offensive.”
Ksl is owned by Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and chose not to air The Playboy Club last fall for similar reasons.
The New Normal star Ellen Barkin referred to the move as "blatantly homophobic" and wondered how the affiliate could justify airings of Law & Order: Svu, but not her sitcom. She added:
"[A] loving gay couple having a baby is inappropriate?...

In sad news, Neil Armstrong passed away at the age of 82. The first man to set foot on the moon, Armstrong was more than just an American hero, he was a global pioneer who helped a generation dream of things bigger than themselves.
In one of the more touching stories I've read lately, longtime comic book writer Karl Kesel is selling his extensive collection of rare comic books collected over a lifetime. Why? To help pay the medical and adoption bills for his new son, who was born addicted to heroin. But it's all for the best cause, children.
Among the amenities that Republicans can expect in Tampa Bay is free admission to a bathhouse, a HomoCon party held in a fetish club, and a Paul Ryan-double go-go boy.
Speaking of surprises, the Republicans blinked and moved Ann Romney's speech to Tuesday night so the networks would televise it.

Utah station Ksl, owned by the Latter Day Saints Church, has said it will not air "The New Normal," a new NBC comedy about a male gay couple having a baby via a surrogate. GLAAD has responded with a statement:

NBC’s Utah affiliate KSL-TV is sticking with its old normal this fall and refusing to air Ryan Murphy’s new gay-dads-and-their-surrogate comedy The New Normal.

Terrence Malick. Mateo Garrone. Rian Johnson. Noah Baumbach. Joss Whedon. Neil Jordan. Francois Ozon. Joe Wright. Thomas Vinterbeg. Derek Cianfrance. All of these filmmakers, plus loads more, will be among those presenting new feature films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 6th to 16th. Of the 61 films announced this morning, Rian Johnson’s sci-fi actioner Looper will open the fest (a clear upgrade from Score! A Hockey Musical, to be sure), while the others are divvied up between Gala and Special Presentation screenings. Of note: rumors of Terrence Malick’s swift return to the big screen have turned out to be well-founded (barring some last-minute delay); his To the Wonder has been confirmed, along with a raft of well-received Cannes exports like Pablo Lorrain’s No and Mateo Garrone’s Reality. The most insane part of today’s already-stellar announcement is that there’s loads more to come,...
