Billed as Friday the 13th meets Glee, Stage Fright is a new take on the classic slasher formula which sees Kylie Swanson (Driver) brutally murdered after her star-making performance in the Broadway-bound musical ‘The Haunting of the Opera’. Ten years later, her producer Roger McCall (Loaf) is running a musical theatre summer camp where Kylie’s twins, Camilla and Buddy help out. When Roger decides to revive ‘The Haunting of the Opera’ kabuki-style for the end of term entertainment, Camilla wants her mother’s cursed role. But the masked Opera Ghost returns with rehearsals ready to break a leg and strike down the cast and its leading lady again…

★★★★☆ There's an eerily effective collision of genres happening in Stage Fright (2014). Horror, comedy and musical are all at play and, under the masterful hand of writer and director Jerome Sable, make for deliciously gory fun. While it hearkens back to the canon of 1980s "summer camp slasher" films , there's a refreshing tongue-in-cheek comedic tone here. Viewers can get the all-knowing wink as well as some guts on the side. Camilla Swanson (Allie MacDonald) is having a rough time: ten years ago, her mother, Broadway diva Kylie Swanson (Minnie Driver), was murdered. This unexpected death leaves Camilla and her brother Buddy (Douglas Smith) in the care of their mother's manager, Roger McCall (Meat Loaf).

Stage Fright
Starring Allie MacDonald, Meat Loaf, Douglas Smith, Minnie Driver, Kent Nolan, Melanie Leishman
Directed by Jerome Sable
Screenplay by Jerome Sable
2014, Canada
The horror genre has not exactly been a steady and stable movie-going experience for freshness or originality as of late. Nevertheless, the persistence to include any distinctive gimmick or angle just to distinguish these faceless frightfests from one another is indeed appreciated. In writer-director Jerome Sable’s Canadian creeper Stage Fright one can actually both cheerfully sing and scream for their supper in this entertaining off-kilter morbid musical of mayhem. Sable’s impishly dire slasher stage production does conjure up an interesting take on how to “kill a live audience”…or at least try not to be killed in front of this very same audience. No, the final curtain call for Stage Fright does not involve any of the obligatory stand-by sinister venues such as haunted houses,...

The Hamming of the Opera: Sable’s Debut Musical/Horror Hybrid Light Fun
What promises on paper to be a delirious mess or instant camp classic ends up being not quite either with Jerome Sable’s ambitious directorial debut, Stage Fright, a musical horror film that foregoes cheap laughs for an unanticipated dose of character development. Bringing to mind the days when B horror flicks were as much as fun as they were unapologetically (and often, cheaply) violent, Sable’s film is bound to be described as a film ‘like’ this one mixed with something ‘like’ that one, though choosing to market it as Scream crossed with “Glee” is terribly unfair and not quite apt, as its own self-awareness, not to mention the performances Sable snags from his cast, catapults it as something much more genuine and entertaining than those references. Friday the 13th meets Sleepaway Camp meets The Rocky Horror Picture Show...

The newest horror musical Stage Fright (review) is poised for release, and we have the scoop! Starring Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf, this retro slasher is a great throwback for fans of Phantom of the Opera and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Dread Central: I don't know if you remember me, but I was a huge supporter of your short film, The Legend of Beaver Dam. I love it so much! So I am wondering... when you got the backing to make a feature horror musical, why not go with expanding on The Legend of Beaver Dam?
Jerome Sable: Even though we made The Legend of Beaver Dam first, the idea for Stage Fright actually preceded it. Batalion and I knew we wanted to do a slasher film at a musical theatre camp, but we realized we would probably need to make a short film first, before anyone would back an entire feature.

As someone whose only tattoo happens to be the iconic red lips from The Rocky Horror Picture Show poster, you could say that my interest in seeing the latest horror musical, Stage Fright, was a “sure thing.” Written and directed by Jerome Sable, Stage Fright is a clever, gory and wickedly fun time that truly celebrates everything we love about horror musicals with an unabashed enthusiasm that you can’t help but fall in love with.
Wasting no time, Stage Fright gets gruesome with a stunning opener that finds Broadway star Kylie Swanson (Minnie Driver) celebrating the performance of a lifetime. Unfortunately for Kylie, that’s exactly what ends up being the case when she is savagely murdered by a masked killer that very evening, leaving her two children- Camilla (Allie MacDonald) and Buddy (Douglas Smith) – in the care of her theatrical producer Roger (Meatloaf). Stage Fright
Director: Jerome Sable
Writer(s): Jerome Sable
Producer(s): Serendipity Point Films’ Ari Lantos, Jonas Bell Pasht.
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Minnie Driver, Meat Loaf, Allie MacDonald and Douglas Smith
As we revert back to his brilliant 2010 short The Legend of Beaver Dam as an indication of better and bigger things to come, while this horror musical Stage Fright (shot in September of ’12) remains in post, its director has soaked himself in more red corn syrup. We could feasibly getting two Jerome Sable films in ’14 with his participation on the ABCs of Death 2 omnibus.
Gist: Minnie Driver plays Kylie Swanson, the enigmatic and haunted star of the Broadway stage, and mother of siblings Camilla (MacDonald) and Buddy (Smith) who find themselves at the centre of the unfolding horror at the camp. Meat Loaf plays Roger McCall, the fallen-from-grace Broadway producer turned camp director.

We first discovered Jerome Sable when he broke ground with the Sundance accepted short, 2010′s The Legend of Beaver Dam. When there was no mention of Stage Freight for September’s Toronto Int. Film Fest, I mentally circled Sable’s name for a mention in the Sundance ’14 program. With an almost guaranteed certainty, the fully fledged filmmaker and accomplished film composer with a good number of shorts under his belt has a brand we can call his own. This horror musical (shot in September of ’12) stars the ensemble that can belt out the tunes as well in Minnie Driver, Meat Loaf, Allie MacDonald and Douglas Smith.

Tagline: "Sing until you scream." Stage Fright is an upcoming horror film from first time feature film director Jerome Sable. Minnie Driver will star, along with part time musician Meat Loaf. This title is set for release later in 2013 and the film is set in a musical theatre camp. Apparently, there is a critic of the camp. This masked killer sets about terrorizing and murdering participants in the rehearsals. Did the killer get jilted by someone else as the camp? The story details for Stage Fright are sparse. But, the film's first poster is available for horror fans. As well, the first still, showing Driver as Kylie Swanson, is available (below). The poster shows a theatrical mask, with a blade running through it. This symbol likely alludes to the fate of some of the members of the stage camp. And, this title is currently in post-production, so a trailer is likely to be released soon.

Stage Fright, which has nothing to do with that crazy Soavi movie – great, now I’m thinking of the owl mask – or the Hitchcock film, is the new film from The Legend of Beaver Dam director Jerome Sable (listen to our interview back when we were talking about The Legend of Beaver Dam). The film stars Minnie Driver, Meat Loaf, Allie Macdonald & Douglas Smith. While we wait for a trailer or any announcement of a release, an official still & poster has been released.
Synopsis
