The repealing of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was definitely a moment of monumental significance in contemporary Indian history. Even though the provision was a legislative relic of the British colonial government, the government of the United Kingdom had revoked this provision in their own country, much before India did the same. The struggle for equal rights and opportunities for people belonging to the LGBTQ+ spectrum in India is far from over; however, the past decade has seen some interesting trends in terms of representation of queer characters in Indian cinema.
For a society that still refuses to condone sex education because the subject continues to be taboo, the cinematic medium becomes an interesting means of initiating conversations on the matter, given its reach and capacity for mass engagement. It’s been over two decades since the release of Deepa Mehta’s “Fire”, which had created...

Srijit Mukherji’s “Vinci Da” deals with two human minds which are oxymoron but create an impact on the system. And sometimes the mind is covered with a mask of flesh and skin and there lies the criminal instinct which has a flow of its own. “Vinci Da” is a never before made psychological thriller in Bengali cinema which has a unique way to portray the conflict between good and evil thoughts and its impact.

There comes a point in everyone’s life where they just need to get away from their parents and find themselves. Its known as being a teenager. But what do your parents do with all the extra spare time once you’re not around? And in a modern, fast paced changing world it’s so easy to fall behind the times. Helicopter Eela, starring Kajol and Riddhi Sen playing mother and son, is the story of Kajol joining her son at music college to learn some new ways of doing the old things. Directed by Pradeep Sarkar under Ajay Devgn Films banner, it’s a great mix of old and new, young and old. The music has been brought together in collaboration by Amit Trivedi, Daniel George and a special song from Raghav Sarkak.
While the title is very much a curve ball, if there was to be a title song this would be it.

Helicopter Eela
Starring Kajol, Riddhi Sen
Directed by Pradeep Sarkar
Seen worse, for sure. This story of an over-possessive mother and her stifled son has some glorious moments of remonstration, repartee and rumination between Kajol and that engaging young Bengali actor Ridhi Sen. In this loose and baggy adaptation of a Gujarati play by Aband Gandhi, they play the mother and son with rollicking relish.
Sadly the script doesn’t support the Kajol-Ridhi camaraderie beyond a point. And after a solid start the plot crumbles helplessly to the ground writhing down there in sheer helplnessess as an opportunity to pin down a solid film on a mother-son bonding is squandered away in irrelevance, superfluousness and disharmony.
Speaking of disharmony, a lot of the film’s aspirational drama originates from music. The songs though not discordant, add nothing to the plot.
So what gives, really? The problem in Helicopter Eela is...

Kajol and Riddhi Sen feature in this story about a middle-aged, middle-class woman who must rediscover herself and find a life outside of her son. It’s a worthy idea but the narration is almost entirely lacking in insight or authenticity

Talk about ‘getting into the character’ a bit too far! Well, this is what happened for Kajol when she was required to slap her on-screen teenage son Riddhi Sen in their upcoming release Helicopter Eela. While it was the need of the script for the actress to do that occasionally in the film, little did the reel life mom and son knew that it would actually turn out to be a rather hilarious experience for all present on the sets.
“That’s because it is not once, twice or three-four times that Riddhi gets a slap from Kajol. A scene like that comes up every few minutes and as a result there are at least 8-10 instances in the film where the situation repeats itself,” laughs a senior crew member who saw it all unfold in front of her eyes when the shooting was on.

Kajol has been the talk of the town for her relatable mommy-avatar in the upcoming film, Helicopter Eela. Directed by Pradeep Sarkar, the film beautifully sketches the journey of a single mother, quite overprotective about her teenage son, played by the National Award-Winner, Riddhi Sen.
Owning her absolutely witty self on and off screen, Kajol turned into a complete tease on the sets of the Helicopter Eela and guess who became the scapegoat? It was none other than her reel son, Riddhi who tagged as ‘National Award Winner’ during the entire shoot of the film.
Ridhhi, who was touched by Kajol’s affection and support behind the camera, throws light on the funny instances that took place throughout the schedule. He says, “Kajol ma’am and I developed a strong bond in a very short span of time. She knew I had recently won an award for my work. One...

In Kajol’s upcoming movie, Helicopter Eela, the actress plays a character that was once an inspiring singer in the 1990s but now is a helicopter mother who even goes to college with her son played by Riddhi Sen.
For a very cool scene from the character’s singing days, the makers of the film roped in singers Anu Malik, Shaan, Ila Arun and Baba Sehgal for special appearances.
Director Pradeep Sarkar explained, “Since the role spans from the ’90s to 2018, with Kajol playing an aspiring singer, we wanted to recreate the music scene of that decade for one of the most important sequences. And since it was vital that we keep it authentic, we decided to get in touch with these four industry stalwarts who graciously agreed to be a part of the film. The second song, Yaadon Ki Almari, from the most anticipated film of the year ‘Helicopter Eela’ was launched by Kajol and Riddhi Sen at a local college festival amongst hundreds of fans. She visited the college campus after a long time and was overly excited to be amongst the crowd.
Since the movie is based on the premise of a mother following her son and getting admission in his college, the makers decided it was best to launch this track on a campus along with students. Director Pradeep Sarkar says, “I always conceptualise songs to take the story and situations in a film forward. Yaadon Ki Almari is about the aspirations of Kajol’s character, Eela; it’s about her wanting to write and compose music. In fact, in the film, she goes on to make a small music video after this song. Helicopter Eela is an entertaining slice-of-life film, starring Kajol and Riddhi Sen in lead roles that will resonate with families across the world. Produced by Ajay Devgn and Jayantilal Gada, the film is quite a realistic approach to the relationship of a mother with her children.
Helicopter Eela showcases a mother’s endearment and sacrifices for her little ones, and how kids respond to these emotions at different stages of their life. What will appeal to the audience most about the film is the simplicity of the message in it. The trailer that came out earlier this week shows us a small glimpse of this amusing vis a vis that parents and children share on a daily basis.
It’s hilarious that we all relate to our moms asking us, ‘dabba leke aaya?’ or the many times, our moms have stopped us from talking to strangers or eating odd junk food.

National award winning director Pradeep Sarkar has commissioned his son, Ronit give playback for his upcoming directorial which stars Kajol and Riddhi Sen.
Ronit has previously sung the title track of Lafangay Parindey, which was Pradeep Sarkar’s directoral debut and which featured Deepika Padokone and Neil Nitin Mukesh.
When asked about the song in the movie, Ronit says, “The song is titled ‘Mumma Ki Parchai’ and is composed by Amit Trivedi. The team tried my voice out first and thought it was a decent match, so we went to the studio and recorded it again for the film.”
The song’s energy is what he loved the most. “Its lyrics are funny. The song is in the rock zone, which is familiar territory for me as I was a part of a few bands during college.”
Describing the song more, Ronit says, “The song is about Kajol’s Eela and her son.

Parched
Starring Tannishtha Chatterjee, Radhika Apte , Surveen Chawla, Lehar Khan
Written & Directed by Leena Yadav
Long after Parched played out its poignant plot, I kept thinking about the four women at the forefront of Leena Yadav’s sparkling saga of patriarchal tyranny. The enduring grief and the brief bouts of buoyancy that Rani (Tannishtha Chatterjee), Lajjo (Radhika Apte), Bijlee (Surveen Chawla) and Janaki (Lehar Khan) carry with themselves, lingers in our hearts and minds long after the last frame of Leena’s luminous work dies down.
The film is shot with such inescapable beauty by Russell Carpenter (who moves with fluent fecundity from the soggy sappiness of Titanic to the parched desertscape of this walloping work on women’s empowerment) that you fear for the inner lives of the characters. Would their emotional existence be able to withstand the sheer extraneous splendor of the storytelling?
The answer, my friend, is blowing passionately in the winds.

But Santu’s destiny was pre-written in a village that’s steeped deep in caste-hierarchy and debauchery. Unaware of the consequences, he is nurturing defiance and courting a few dangerous infatuations that can topple the equations of caste in the village. How far will his defiance take him?...

An infatuated young boy who faced death for writing a love letter in a remote village is the subject of Chauranga. The film that won the Best Indian Film award at Mami last year and also the Grand Jury prize at Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles Iffla, is slated for January 8th release next year.
Director Bikas Ranjan Mishra says, “Chauranga was prompted by a news story. The film is my understanding of the village life where a gruesome act of killing is possible in the name of preserving the sanctity of caste system. It’s a fictional re-telling of the actual incident set in a real village where I grew up and which I was very much a part of.”

Finding true empowerment is an uphill battle in Leena Yadav’s Parched, which takes audiences on a harrowing journey towards freedom as her four protagonists break their chains of oppression.
We meet Rani (Tannishtha Chatterjee) a widow and former child-bride, is now marrying off her 17-year old son Gulab (Riddhi Sen) to Janaki (Lehar Khan), who is 15. When Janaki appears with shorn hair, and brings shame to her family, Rani soon enacts the same harsh treatment she received from her mother-in-law with Janaki. Rani is heartbroken when Gulab rejects Janaki, preferring to hang out with his friends and chase prostitutes in the city. There’s also Rani’s best friend Lajjo (Radhika Apte), a fun and raucous presence, who is unable to have a child, and routinely beaten by her violent husband. Rounding out the trio is their friend, Bijli (Surveen Chawla) a dancer in a traveling sideshow, disparaged for...
