It's time to say goodbye to Carrie Bradshaw again. The Carrie Diaries has been cancelled by The CW after two seasons and 26 episodes.
The Carrie Diaries follows the experiences of young Carrie Bradshaw (AnnaSophia Robb) as she grows into the New York writer we know from Sex and the City. Others in the cast include Lindsey Gort, Austin Butler, Katie Findlay, Brendan Dooling, Ellen Wong, Freema Agyeman, Stefania Owen, Matt Letscher, and Chloe Bridges.
The series debuted early last year to a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.61 million viewers. The ratings went up and down over the course of the season and the show could have easily been cancelled but The CW execs decided to stick with it.
Unfortunately, the second season premiere drew just half of the viewership of the series debut some 10 months earlier.

Well, this is totally expected, but still sad. After two seasons, The CW has cancelled The Carrie Diaries.
In addition to the teen character of Carrie Bradshaw (and in Season Two, her future Sex & The City Bff Samantha), the show was notable for introducing the character of Walt (played by the adorable Brendan Dooling), who struggled with being a gay teen in the 80′s.
I recapped Walt’s story during most of the run of the show, and will miss his optimism and sincerity, and will always wonder what happened with his relationship with fellow 80′s gay Bennett (the two characters were never mentioned on Satc). I’d like to think they’re still together, with a couple of college-age kids … and an Irish Setter.
And we now have two more headstones for this year’s In Memoriam.

Well, this is it. It’s graduation day for Walt Reynolds (Brendan Dooling) on The Carrie Diaries. Last week he took his broken wings and learned to fly again, reconciling with both boyfriend Bennet and his family (or at least his father).
On the last episode of the season (and perhaps the series), Walt unfortunately doesn’t have much to do, but we do find out that he’s going to Pratt Institute, which means he can remain in NYC with Bennet.
Aside from that, he’s basically there in a couple of scenes for moral support, for Maggie and Carrie, and actually Bennet has the bigger role this episode, as he gives away and officiates Larissa’s wedding.
But the show ends on a sweet note, as Carrie’s city family come together to celebrate her official debut as a real New Yorker … waiting tables. Although it’s interesting...

When we last checked in on Walt Reynolds (Brendan Dooling) on The Carrie Diaries, things were not going well. He survived a mid-80′s AIDS scare, but it drove him back in the closet, where he broke up with boyfriend Bennet, and begged his disapproving parents for another chance. Oh Walt.
Prom, 1986. The world is about to bear witness to the awesome debacle known as … Hands Across America! It was a resounding success in NYC, with Carrie, Walt, and Samantha providing three of the links … until Samantha realized it was not Handjobs Across America, and lost interest.
Blair, Jo, Tootie, Natalie, and George The Gay Handyman (I’ll let you decide who is who) decide to screw protocol and attend the prom as a team, which has Walt excited, until he learns that it’s going to held in NYC, which he hasn’t visited since his vomit meltdown.

Our friends over at The CW sent us this preview clip from tonight’s episode of The Carrie Diaries, “This Is the Time”. It features young Walt coming to terms with being gay and lamenting that it means the end of his dreams of marriage, kids and a lavish wedding. (The show is set in the mid-eighties so the kid can be forgiven for being so pessimistic!)
For those (few) who might not be familiar, the series is a prequel to Sex and the City exploring Carrie Bradshaw’s teen years. Only 13 episodes were ordered for season 2. With no subsequent back end order, it’s likely the show has been defacto canceled, but we probably won’t know its fate for sure until May when The CW announces their fall 2014 schedule.

"The Carrie Diaries" took a turn for the serious last week when Walt (Brendan Dooling) and Bennett (Jake Robinson) had their first brush with the mid-'80s NYC AIDS crisis. And while they both tested negative, that health scare prompted Walt to break up with Bennett.
Executive producer Amy B. Harris reveals that Walt and Bennett are going to be dealing with both the breakup and the AIDS scare in different ways. "Walt moves back into his family's house and his struggle for the next few episodes is can you deny who you really are? How is that going to go for you?" Harris tells Zap2it. "And Walt and Bennett are not going to be together and I think Bennett is going to show some surprising responses of his own to the breakup."

Things have been going fairly well for Walt Reynolds (Brendan Dooling) on The Carrie Diaries. True, he was kicked out of his Wasp nest for being a Honey Bee, but he managed to find two new families, and his relationship with older beau Bennet is going swimmingly (and they finally did it! … apparently).
But the realities of being a gay man in early 1986 in NYC are about to hit full force.
It’s Valentine’s Day 1986 … “Rock Me Amadeus” had just debuted on the chart … Kevin Bacon‘s Quicksilver had just opened and would change the way we looked at bicycle messengers … and Boy George made his now historic appearance on The A-Team.
In Manhattan, Larissa, Samantha, and Carrie are dissing a particularly bad fashion shoot. Samantha offers up her model services, and when Larissa pooh-pooh’s it, Sam responds “I once walked the runway at the Tallahasee Mall Back To School Fashion Show.

The Carrie Diaries is tackling the 1980s AIDS epidemic and its effect on New York City. With Walt (Brendan Dooling) and Bennett (Jake Robinson) happily exploring their relationship, things come to a halt when the two find out that Bennett's ex-boyfriend is dying of AIDS in Friday's episode. (Watch a scene above.) The story was a crucial moment in history that executive producer Amy B. Harris felt needed to be told this season. Bennet (Jake Robinson) and Walt (Brendan Dooling) in “Date Expectations”
When you set a TV show in the hip, trendy and gay world of Manhattan in the 1980s, it’s inevitable that the AIDS crisis will eventually come up.
Tonight is that time for the CW series, The Carrie Diaries.
While the Sex and the City prequel that follows a teenage Carrie Bradshaw (played by AnnaSophia Robb) typically is a light, fun hour of teen angst drama and finding your own voice as an individual, tonight’s “Date Expectations” episode gets a big dose of reality.
In the episode, centered around the various characters dealing with Valentines Day, our favorite teen gay Walt (Brendan Dooling) isn’t thrilled with spending the holiday with Bf Bennet (Jake Robinson) at a gay bar called Boys (watch for the gold and black hot pants on the go-go boys in the club). And just...

Spoiler alert: You probably guessed it on your own, but the mid-'80s NYC AIDS epidemic doesn't mean anything good for young Walt (Brendan Dooling) and Bennett's (Jake Robinson) fledgling but adorable relationship on "The Carrie Diaries."
In Friday (Jan. 10) night's episode, "Date Expectations," Walt has his first brush with the situation that gay men were facing in New York at the time when one of Bennett's ex-boyfriends tests positive for AIDS and is dying in the hospital. It's equal parts scary, heartbreaking, and life-changing.
"The Carrie Diaries" executive producer Amy B. Harris tells Zap2it that this is only the beginning of the story for Walt and Bennett.
"We felt a huge responsibility having the show set in the '80s in New York, in a world that has a very present gay community, that we [would] explore what that would mean," Harris says. "We really felt like Walt has grown so much.

Just when Walt (Brendan Dooling) had started to become somewhat comfortable with his sexuality, his resolve will be tested when New York City's AIDS epidemic of the '80s hits close to home on The Carrie Diaries (Friday, 8/7c, CBS). Things start off pretty grim for Walt Reynolds (Brendan Dooling) on this episode of The Carrie Diaries. His ice-cold, homophobic mother (think Michele Bachman without the crazy eyes) has packed his bags, and can barely stand to look at him. What’s worse, his father refuses to even see him (he’s probably too busy cruising airport restrooms for 80′s twink). So Walt does the only thing he can … he shows up at Carrie’s doorstep. And sad Walt is the saddest thing from the 80′s since Vicki The Robot farted and blew a gasket.
Carrie talks to her dad, and they have a conversation in which they tiptoe around the word “gay,” until finally Tom says he’s not comfortable getting involved in someone’s family problems. Carrie is deeply disappointed, and when Tom admits “I don’t think I even know someone who is gay,” she responds “You know Walt,...

When The Carrie Diaries premiered last season, we were wondering if the show (which chronicles the life of a teenage Carrie Bradshaw) was going to offer the same kind of gay-inclusiveness as HBO’s Sex & The City.
Happily, we were impressed with the introduction of Carrie’s high school friend Walt Reynolds (wonderfully played by Brendan Dooling), as he began his journey of self discovery. That journey has continued this season, as Walt is now out to his close friends, and is in a burgeoning romantic relationship with Carrie’s co-worker Bennet.
But as we learned last week, that relationship is about to be discovered, and Walt will have to deal with the consequences of being a gay teen in the 80′s.
Our friends at The CW sent over this emotional preview clip from this week’s episode, exclusively for TheBacklot readers! Things are about to get grim this holiday season for Walt.

Last season, The Carrie Diaries was on the bubble and ended up being renewed. Will the ratings improve so that it's no longer in danger or could it be cancelled by The CW instead? Time will tell.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- usually the next day, around 11:30am Est/8:30am Pst. Refresh to see the latest.

Plus, Carrie gets in Samantha Jones’ face — yes, we finally meet the one and only Samantha, and she’s quite the shock for Walt and Carrie.
While Walt (Brendan Dooling) and Carrie (AnnaSophia Robb) were planning an exciting night out in the big city on the Oct. 25 episode of The Carrie Diaries, their plans get turned completely around when an unexpected guest shows up.

I've said it before and I will say it again: the way Amy B. Harris shaped and evolved Walt's coming out journey on The Carrie Diaries was a thing of beauty because, despite being set in 1984, the story unfolded with a complex and contemporary edge that made it deeply relatable and utterly heartfelt. Obviously a huge portion of that praise also goes to star Brendan Dooling, who infused Walt with just the right amount of fear and acceptance throughout this powerful character arc.
The end of season one introduced a love interest for Walt (in the charming shape of Jake Robinson's Bennet) and revealed the boys would be spending summer in the city, making their romantic status one of the biggest season two premiere questions! I caught up with Brendan Dooling to talk about Walt and Bennet in season two and how the show will continue to break new ground with this storyline.

We’re super happy to see this first photo, but it only makes us wish Charlotte and Miranda were along for the ride as well!

The 2012-13 TV season was a banner year in terms of visibility for the gay and lesbian community on network television. Six new shows premiered with gay characters front and center, Adam Pally's Max was doing his thing on "Happy Endings" and "Smash" still existed -- and then it all went away.
As networks began preparing for the 2013-14 season, and with the network model of television itself in danger, the Big Five (CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, and the CW) began canceling shows that weren't working. Among those given the ax? Eleven shows with gay characters. Eleven.
"The New Normal" wasn't normal enough (Or funny enough, depending on who you ask.), "Go On" moved on, "Happy Endings" got its own unhappy ending and "Partners" didn't click on CBS. It was a rainbow bloodbath. (Also axed? "Don't Trust the B----," "Malibu Country," "90210," "Emily Owens, M.D.," "The Office," "Smash" and "Southland" over on TNT.

In surprising (considering the ratings) but welcome news, The CW has picked up the Satc prequel The Carrie Diaries for a 13 episode mid-season run next year.
That means we’ll get to watch newly-out Walt Reynolds (played by the adorable Brendan Dooling) as he continues his journey of self-discovery. And oh yeah, see AnnaSophia Robb wear lots of hot 80′s fashions.
Okay, Walt fans (and fans of Donna Ladonna), you can let out that sigh of relief.

While more than a million viewed last night's season finale of The Carrie Diaries, only time will tell if that was enough to turn the series' fortunes around. With last night's numbers--a 0.4 in the 18-49 demo with 1.07 million total--aren't doing much to drastically alter the tides, there are a few reasons why the show could be saved after all. We take a look at two reasons why Carrie, Sebastian and company could be doomed, and two more points to consider that could save the show.
Interview: Brendan Dooling Talks The Carrie Diaries Season 2
Why it could be canceled
It's now the network's lowest-rated non-Friday series. If you don't count 90210, already ending at the end of the season, then the weakest non-Friday show on The CW's roster is, unfortunately, The Carrie Diaries. For all the crticism people toss at Beauty and the Beast while praising Carrie and her campy friends, Beast...

Sometimes things are better left unsaid. Carrie and her friends learned that lesson the hard way on the season finale of ‘The Carrie Diaries.’ Plus, Carrie makes a big move to NYC and a ‘Sex and the City’ character is introduced!
Carrie (AnnaSophia Robb) gets two romantic reunions with Sebastian (Austin Butler) in the season finale of The Carrie Diaries, but unfortunately, they’re short lived. Can these two ever make it work?
Carrie & Sebastian’s Tragic Romance
A few weeks have passed by since the April 1 episode (in Castlebury time), and Sebastian surprises Carrie at her house. They both apologize to each other for the mishap after the Madonna concert. They realize they never wanted to breakup and reconcile with a few “I Love yous” and a hot make-out session.
Unfortunately, Carrie’s happiness is short lived. Maggie (Katie Findlay) has a slip of the tongue and admits that...

With Carrie Bradshaw (AnnaSophia Robb) moving into Manhattan with Walt (Brendan Dooling) following Carrie's discovery of Sebastian (Austin Butler) and Maggie's (Katie Findlay) affair -- not to mention Maggie's outburst after finding out Walt's sexuality -- a lot of loose ends are still left untied. The "Carrie Diaries" finale is upon us (Monday, April 8 at 8 p.m. Et) and though adolescent Carrie Bradshaw (AnnaSophia Robb) is the voice of the CW series, it's her best friend Walt Reynolds (Brendan Dooling) who's had fans on the edge of their seats.
While "Sex & The City" fans loved Stanford Blatch (Willie Garson) and Anthony Marentino (Mario Cantone), Walt isn't exactly "one of the girls" in the same vein. After all, "The Carrie Diaries" is set in the '80s and the high school senior's struggle with his sexuality is different than the ones teens usually see today, like Kurt Hummel on "Glee" or Emily Fields on "Pretty Little Liars."
Below, Dooling opens up about where we leave Walt in the "Carrie Diaries" finale, the possibility of seeing him in a relationship, the role he originally auditioned for on "The Carrie Diaries," and much more.

Listen, America. I can't blame you for not tuning in to "The Carrie Diaries" when it first started.
Even I, a tried-and-true teen drama lover who cried a bucket of tears when "One Tree Hill" ended and still harbors anger issues regarding Rory Gilmore's love life, had my doubts about this show.
I was very skeptical when The CW first announced plans for the "Sex and the City" prequel. Would fans care about the beginning of Carrie Bradshaw's story when they already knew the end of it? Then, after the fiasco that was the "Gossip Girl" series finale, I had my reservations about getting invested in another teen-centric series from Fake Empire. (Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, and... I'm just the idiot that invested a hundred precious hours in two shows that made absolutely no sense.)
My concerns were unfounded. Trust me when I tell you...

If you haven't seen the season finale of The CW's The Carrie Diaries (Tonight, 8pm), you're far from alone.
"I'm very excited to see it, too!" Brendan tells Ology. "We don't get any pre-screenings, but I've read the script, and I know what's going on!"
And there's certainly been a lot going on, not just in Carrie's life, but Walt's as well, and he has major hurdles to cross before the show comes to a close. "As Walt comes to the realization of his sexual orientation, he doesn't really have a plan for initiating this new lifestyle, so things happen unexpectedly, and people find out things before he would have liked them to," he tells us. "That's what happens with Maggie, and she gets very upset. She takes it personally."

Anna Sophia Robb and Brendan Dooling in The Carrie Diaries
We still have not gotten word on a second season of the CW's freshman series The Carrie Diaries, but tonight's season finale definitely sets things in motion for more possible adventures with young Carrie Bradshaw (Anna Sophia Robb) and her friends, including her pal, Walt, whose coming out stops moving at a snail's pace and speeds up considerably.
We asked Brendan Dooling, who plays Walt, to give us a glimpse into tonight's episode and what the future holds for his character now that the closet door may be in his past.
AfterElton: Walt's coming out is accelerated in the season finale. How do his friends react?
Brendan Dooling: Walt is lucky that his core group of friends aren’t the kind to talk behind each other’s backs, so they haven’t even discussed the possibility of it in Walt’s absence.

The Carrie Diaries' Brendan Dooling has had a whirlwind first season, going from girlfriend to coming out, and it's just going to get more intense. Still, Brendan doesn't know where his story might go in season two, if it happens. "I mean, in the books, he lives in a tent in his backyard because his dad doesn't want him in the house. I'm not sure where Amy Harris and the writers are going to take his story. You know, I don't know how much of — godwilling, Season 2 — I don't know how much of that would be Carrie and Walt in the city, as opposed to Walt in Castlebury. But there's certainly a lot more adversity coming his way. He's had support in the closet, and now I don't know what his support system is like outside of it." And Entertainment Weekly has a very spoilery photo you probably want to see.

Walt has an ‘identity crisis’ while Carrie pretends to be Larissa and finds herself in a few compromising situations.
On the March 25 episode of The Carrie Diaries, everyone’s either trying to figure out who they are or learning how to perfect the person they’ve already become.
Walt (Brendan Dooling) plans to meet up with Carrie (AnnaSophia Robb) while on spring break in the city, but she ends up being too busy while running an errand for Larissa and paying for her sins!
It may be fun to dress up in gowns worth $1000, but we learn that it’s not so fun to run away from angry women after you’ve slept with their boyfriends. Carrie learned that lesson the hard way when she took on Larissa’s identity for the day.

Carrie (AnnaSophia Robb) and Sebastian (Austin Butler) may be rekindling their relationship but it's Walt (Brendan Dooling) and Donna's (Chloe Bridges) new romance on The Carrie Diaries that has us all in a tizzy. Get ready Maggie, (Katie Findlay) because we highly doubt you'll like this new couple strolling hand-in-hand in the hallways. What will come of Maggie and Walt's friendship? Does Donna have true feelings? We caught up with the cast on set a few weeks back, and have been putting together the pieces now that there's a new couple in town.

When I heard that The CW was developing a prequel to Sex & The City that focused on Carrie Bradshaw's introduction to Manhattan in the mid-80's, I was ... wary.
In the first place, The Carrie Diaries changed Carrie's backstory. In Satc she spoke about how her father walked out on her and her mother when she was young, and she never saw him again. [Warning: If you have not watched Monday's episode, "Hush Hush," do not proceed. Spoilers ahead.] How does The Carrie Diaries boss Amy B. Harris characterize the aftermath of Monday's episode? "We're calling this the game-changer." And a game-changer it is. With young Carrie Bradshaw's (AnnaSophia Robb) Manhattan life squashed -- for the time being, at least -- and her father discovering her secrets (bye, law firm! bye, Interview!), with the bad comes some good. That's where Sebastian Kydd (Austin Butler) comes back into the picture. There's also Walt (Brendan Dooling) and Maggie's (Katie Findlay) break-up (it
