Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for Episode 9 of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” titled “Feels Like the First Time.”
At the beginning of Episode 9 of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” viewers are greeted by a needle drop that may seem too good to be true: As Daisy (Riley Keough) wakes up from almost overdosing the night before, Fleetwood Mac’s “Gold Dust Woman” starts to play.
As the mystical track builds, Daisy realizes that her husband, Nicky (Gavin Drea), abandoned her while she was near death, leaving Daisy in the arms of Billy (Sam Claflin), her bandmate and frequent temptation. While Stevie Nicks sings “is it over now, do you know how?/ Pick up the pieces and go home,” Daisy yells at Nicky to “pack his shit up” and leave while the rest of the Six form a united front behind her.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Wedding Season Season 1 Episode 8 finale.] Hulu‘s Wedding Season takes the thrill of falling in love literally. When Katie and Stefan meet at a wedding, they spark an instant connection. The only problem is, Katie’s engaged to someone else. Three months (and more wedding run-ins) later, Gavin crashes Katie’s wedding declaring his love for her. She rejects him, the wedding continues, but then her new husband and his family are murdered during the reception, and Katie and Stefan are the main suspects. Still in love with each other, they then go on the run in an attempt to prove their innocence (and lead viewers on a merry ride as to whether they will end up together). Wedding Season‘s eight episodes are a genre-busting good time. Here, Drea and Wedding Season creator Oliver Lyttelton explain the combination rom-com/whodunnit thriller format, the chemistry ...

Credit “Wedding Season” for not taking the easy opening. It takes a lot of confidence to start up an eight-episode season with an “I object!” moment. It’s how the show introduces us to Stefan (Gavin Drea) one of 2022’s unluckiest characters, and not just because his gambit to break up the wedding of Katie (Rosa Salazar), the woman he loves, is dead on arrival.
His hopes at whisking Katie away for a fairy-tale ending aren’t the only thing that dies that day. At the reception, Katie’s intended Hugo (George Webster) and a number of his family members keel over on top of their chicken/steak/vegetarian option. While she somehow manages to escape unharmed, Stefan is hauled into an interrogation room to share everything he knows about the woman suddenly leaving a trail of dead bodies in her wake.

At first, Hulu’s “Wedding Season” seems to be a charming enough take on a British “Four Weddings and a Funeral”-style romantic comedy, complete with a hopeless romantic boy, his boisterous friend group, and the enigmatic American girl he falls for the minute he meets her at — where else? — a wedding. But both Oliver Lyttelton’s take on the setup and the American at its center have more up their sleeves than a charming meet-cute. The second that initial layer’s peeled, “Wedding Season” (not to be confused with Netflix’s recent movie of the same name) is off and running in another direction entirely — a murder mystery with roots in the kind of deep corruption that would give Jason Bourne nightmares. Whether or not it all hangs together will be for the audience to decide, with all eight episodes out Sept. 8 on Hulu (but only seven made available...

The rom-com is a genre that leans into the restoration of order. No matter how messy things are when we start, by the end of a tiny 90 minutes, we can count on the boy getting the girl or the girl getting the boy or — as things get more progressive — the gender/gender identity/sexual orientation combination of your choosing, provided that we reach “happiness.” It’s a genre that’s satisfying, but the potential for dull inevitability has encouraged storytellers to subvert expectations, upping the stakes on the screwball antics and challenging our notions of what “happy” endings even look like.
The rise of more close-ended stories on the small screen has been particularly fertile ground for rom-com subversion, with results ranging from brilliant (Netflix’s The End of the F***ing World) to forgettable (Hulu’s Four Weddings and a Funeral) to ambitious...

Wedding Season, which premieres on Disney+ this week, is many genres tied up in one. It’s a romance, a comedy, it action, it’s light and it’s dark – there’s detectives, brides, grooms – and murder. It’s all been expertly balanced by writer Oliver Lyttelton, and to mark launch of the show, we had the pleasure in speaking to the man himself, paired with none other than the film’s (co)lead, Gavin Drea – who plays Stefan (great name).
We discuss capturing the film’s tricky tonality, and the duo also speak about collaborating with Rosa Salazar, who plays Katie to Gavin’s Stefan. In fact, we dive into the name Stefan – and the process behind deciding names for characters, from a writer’s perspective. We also dip into a brief chat about the second season, and of course we speak about weddings.

Runaway brides are hardly a novelty in the world of romantic comedy. But a fugitive bride accused of murdering her groom and his family? Meet Katie (Rosa Salazar), who takes it to the next level in the eight-part caper, Wedding Season. The giddily suspenseful farce opens with a failed attempt to re-create the finale of The Graduate, when hopelessly smitten Stefan (Gavin Drea) crashes Katie’s wedding ceremony to sweep her off the altar in a grand gesture. (Credit: Hulu) She tells him to buzz off, using much saltier language, and shortly after Stefan retreats to nurse his bruised ego, police bust in to arrest him. They suspect he conspired to poison the wedding party in cahoots with Katie, who’s fled the reception and is nowhere to be found. What ensues is a refreshingly irreverent twist on the meet-cute formula, with equal parts mystery, chase thriller, and opposites-attract love story.

It's out with the old and in with the new — another month is coming to a close, so it's time for each of our many different streaming services to refresh their libraries by adding new titles and getting rid of others. So far, no one is doing this quite as dramatically as HBO Max, but alas, no one is completely safe from the possibility of removal. Bet let's instead focus on the upside: More titles will be available to stream this month! Meaning lots more TV series and movies to add to your watchlist and hopefully cross off before they inexplicably disappear from the service.
This month, Hulu is whipping out a selection that really runs the gamut. Looking to linger in the comforting space of reality TV? The streamer has everything from Kardashian family drama to foodie-leaning titles like "Best in Dough" and the season premiere of "Hell's Kitchen.

Emily in Paris exec Lilly Burns has predicted more U.S. and UK production companies will co-produce together as she unearths how Jax Media and UK indie Dancing Ledge Productions came together to bring Disney+’s Wedding Season to screen.
The genre-bending action comedy is the first UK Disney+ original to launch and rolls out on adult-skewing vertical Star and Hulu in the U.S. from September 8.
Described by Burns as “Four Weddings and a Funeral meets Die Hard” and starring Canadian-American Alita: Battle Angel star Rosa Salazar and Irishman Gavin Drea (Vikings: Valhalla), Wedding Season is a rare co-production between a U.S. producer, Jax, and Chris Carey’s Fremantle-backed UK indie Dancing Ledge, which he runs with Laurence Bowen.
Jax worked with French production services outfit First Step on Netflix smash Emily in Paris and Burns said deep-pocketed streamer shows are “elevated” by having producers from different countries behind them.

Disney+ is giving fans a first look at upcoming U.K. original series “Wedding Season” in a new trailer.
Not to be confused with the recent Netflix film, Disney+’s “Wedding Season” is a “genre busting” eight-part dark comedy that sees a bride’s new family poisoned on the night of her wedding.
The Maze Runner franchise’s Rosa Salazar plays Katie, who meets Stefan (Gavin Drea of “Vikings: Valhalla”) at a wedding. The duo quickly strike up an affair – despite the fact Katie is due to get married to someone else in two months. On the night of her wedding, Katie’s new husband is mysteriously found dead – along with his entire family – and Stefan quickly becomes the main suspect.
Stefan, meanwhile, is wondering whether Katie may be capable of more than just infidelity.

For a brief, terrible moment in “Sweetness in the Belly,” you fear that icky-cutesy title is about to be spoken out loud. Describing the lilting sensation of new love, a character alludes to “a feeling right here,” as he gently taps his stomach — only for the film to mercifully cut away before he says the words themselves. It’s a decision that encapsulates what’s at once restrained and sincerely cornball about Zeresenay Berhane Mehari’s polite melodrama, adapted from Camilla Gibbs’ 2006 novel about a white Muslim refugee of the Ethiopian Civil War, caught between the opposing cultures of her roots and her upbringing as she resettles in a London council estate. There’s a floridly sentimental heart fluttering beneath its tastefully solemn surface, but at times, you can’t help wishing the film would give in to its more expressive impulses.

"I need to know you are somewhere safe." Gravitas Ventures has debuted an official trailer for Sweetness in the Belly, an adaption of the novel of the same name by Camilla Gibb. This premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, and is debuting to watch on VOD this month. Sweetness in the Belly tells the moving story of Lilly, an English child abandoned in Africa. Lilly is forced to flee Ethiopia for England when civil war breaks out. She befriends Amina, an Ethiopian refugee who has fled the same war. Together they begin a mission to reunite people with their scattered families. Dakota Fanning co-stars with Wunmi Mosaku, joined by Kunal Nayyar, Gavin Drea, Peter Bankole, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. This looks like a sweet story of kindness and hope in places where there is little to be found. Might be worth a watch after all. Here's the official...
