From the late 1980’s and well into the ’90’s, HBO viewers watched their screens with mounting anticipation as a creaky metal gate was pushed open on a dark and stormy night. With the lightning flashing and the thunder crackling, the first-hand view of the camera wound its way up a path surrounded by tombstones before entering a decrepit mansion at the top of a hill. Once inside the home, the camera stepped through a secret passageway in a bookcase and wound its way down a spiral staircase, eventually stopping before a coffin. As horror hounds know, the coffin’s lid would then fly open with its resident, the Cryptkeeper, springing to life, a grin on his face and a cackle emanating from his dusty throat. The description director/animator Omar Meradi gives for his fully CG short, Lead Me, simply reads, "little monsters hanging around." With its intriguing and spectacular visuals and beautifully sentimental score, perhaps that's the only description this film needs. But if I were to attempt to interpret what the film is depicting, I'd say it's as if the creatures in someone's sketchbook are beginning to will themselves into existence.
