This week marks the 20th anniversary of one of the most iconic gross-out moments in reality TV: Gervase Peterson eating grub worms on the second episode of the first season of “Survivor.” The date was June 7, 2000. Gervase’s Pagong tribe had won the previous week’s inaugural immunity challenge and was spared from voting someone out at tribal council, so they came into this second challenge with a lot to lose. All they had to do was eat grub worms faster than their Tagi tribe counterparts, and a fresh-faced Jeff Probst would give them the immunity idol again. How did it all play out? Watch the “Survivor: Borneo” flashback video above.
SEESonja Christopher still a ‘Survivor’ fan 20 years after being first person voted off: Tony Vlachos is a ‘loose cannon’ but ‘it worked for him’
“In Borneo this is considered like sushi,” Jeff explained as he revealed the fish bowl filled with dirty beetle larvae.

“Survivor: Edge of Extinction” castaway Reem Daly learned the hard way about the struggles of being an older woman on “Survivor.” The Season 38 premiere was a self-admitted “nightmare” for Reem as her tribe quickly targeted her for being a weak link, in addition to her assertive attitude, and she became the first person voted out of this season. Reem still has a chance of getting back into the game thanks to the extinction island twist, but it was still a rough turn of events for the 46-year-old sales rep from Virginia. While Reem’s ouster was in part due to a lack of fitting in with her tribe, it’s hard to not see her early difficulties as just another example of women of a certain age struggling on “Survivor,” going all the way back to the first season.

It may not quite equal Sue Hawk's "rats and snakes" speech from the original "Survivor" Final Tribal Council, but Monica Culpepper had a moment in Sunday's "Survivor: Blood vs. Water" finale that stands as its own definitive statement-of-values. Well into a Final Tribal that became a referendum on Monica's sincerity and her possible ulterior motives, the "One World" veteran just broke. "Have you all never met a nice person? Have you all never met someone who wasn't selfish?" Monica asked. It perhaps says something that Monica received only one vote from the "Blood vs. Water" Jury, a nod...

It's getting personal on season 27 of CBS' Survivor. This time around returning players will be pitted against their loved ones. Survivor's ratings have been declining over the past few years. Will this new twist cause the ratings to rise or will they fall? Time will tell.
Host Jeff Probst is back, as are 10 past contestants -- Aras Baskauskas, Candice Cody, Colton Cumbie, Gervase Peterson, Kat Edorsson, Laura Morett, Monica Culpepper, Rupert Boneham, Tina Wesson, and Tyson Apostol.
The higher a show's ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better its chances for survival. New ratings data will be added as it becomes available -- typically around 11:30am Est/8:30am Pst. Refresh to see the latest.

The third time was the charm for Tyson Apostol, who was crowned the winner of Survivor: Blood vs. Water Sunday after previously competing on Survivor: Tocantins and Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains.
Tyson had control of the reins for the majority of the season, and was widely assumed to be the frontrunner going into the final three with Gervase Peterson and Monica Culpepper. They were the last loved one pair in Survivor: Blood vs. Water, and they got there by very different means. Ciera Eastin was on the outs early so laid low, but then emerged in the back half of the season as risk-taker willing to vote out her own mom and gamble an immediate exit via a colored rock for the chance to improve her position. Mother Laura Morett, however, stuck around simply by destroying anyone that dared to face her at Redemption Island. Eventually, however, their time ran out. However we figured we would get the mother-daughter combo back together...

Gervase Peterson had “early boot” written all over him when he showed up to play Survivor: Blood vs. Water. After all, he had not played in 13 years, And the one time he did play back in season 1 of Borneo, he was best known for being freaked out by the food challenge and walking through a running challenge when he was out of eyesight from the rest of his tribe. But when presented this time with an opportunity to make a big move and vote out one of his biggest alliance members in Aras, Gervase took it. And that move brought...

Tina Wesson viewed this season of Survivor: Blood vs. Water as her shot at redemption. After going from first (winning The Australian Outback) to worst (being the initial person kicked out of All-Stars), Tina wanted to prove she still had the chops to go all the way. And she almost did, falling just a single day short, after making it back into the game off of Redemption Island, but then being booted once again in the very last vote-off. Of course, all of that seems insignificant now after Tina’s son Taylor was killed in a car accident just two weeks ago.

Monica Culpepper made it all the way to the very end of Survivor: Blood vs. Water, and ended up taking home the $100,000 second place prize after getting the one vote that did not go to winner Tyson Apostol. But the season ended on a bittersweet note, as she was hammered at the final Tribal Council, and not over any moves she did or did not make, but rather just for the type of person she was. We spoke with Monica the morning after the Survivor finale to get her thoughts on what went down, and she tells us about the painful ordeal,...

Monica Culpepper stuck by her "Survivor: Blood vs. Water" alliance and went all the way to the Final 3, where she finished second to Tyson Apostol. She tells Zap2it that
Zap2it: Are you glad you went back on "Survivor"? What was different for you this time around?
Monica Culpepper: Absolutely I was glad to go back. What was different was I got to bring Brad with me and that was just awesome ... Rupert and Brad seemed to be the only two out there who put their loved one's needs in front of theirs. They came out there wanting to get some Redemption. I didn't really get a chance to play the game when I was blindsided by Colton on 'One World.' And I got it this time, the whole kit and caboodle.

Gervase Peterson, who joined "Survivor: Blood vs. Water" after not having competed on the show since Season 1, took third place during the finale behind Tyson Apostol and Monica Culpepper. He tells Zap2it that he did consider flipping on Tyson at one point.
Zap2it: Are you glad you returned to "Survivor"? What was different about this time around versus your first season?
Gervase Peterson: Absolutely ecstatic that they brought me back to play again. What was different was really the players. The game is the same, it was the players. They're a lot faster-paced with how they do things. As soon as we got to the beach, Colton came to me and he said here's our alliance -- it's me, you, Aras, Monica and Kat. I was like, "What if I don't like somebody in that alliance? I gotta play with them for 39 days?" ... That's the dumbest thing I ever heard.

I hate calling Survivor: Blood Vs. Water an “emotional season” since that was, y’know, precisely the point. When family members and loved ones are pitted against each other on an island ruled by a crazed Eddie Bauer shift manager named Jeff Probst, tears will be shed. Rupert Boneham will monologue about loving his wife more than he loves Survivor. John will weep when he decides not to take Candice‘s place on Redemption Island. Ciera will quiver and cry when mentoring her mother to her own demise. Monica Culpepper will liberate herself from her brickbrained husband and announce she is doing this “for Monica!”, as if “Monica” is a Make A Wish child she once met. These were all preordained Hallmark moments.
But I wasn’t quite prepared to sympathize so much with the season’s winner, who not only deserved the million dollars but established some humanity that I happily fell for.

“Out on a Limb”
Airs Wednesday at 8pm (Et) on CBS
In this current Survivor era dominated by returning players, it’s been intriguing to watch how they respond based on their previous experiences. Many over compensate and try to make big moves too early, while others avoid the target that doomed them. Monica Culpepper’s first appearance on One World showed her strength but also a vulnerable side that placed too much trust in others. It’s important to have allies, but placing too much faith in them isn’t wise. The key is recognizing what’s best for their game and if you fit in those plans. Despite more remarkable game play from Ciera to convince Monica she should flip, she makes the right choice this week and sticks with her alliance. Her situation is worse if she switches to the other side. Hayden...

Twenty-seven seasons into Survivor, it’s hard to believe any contestant can get away with being the “manipulative” one. At this point it’s an embarrassing, outdated word for gameplay on reality TV, the kind of whodunnit connivery you associate with Richard Hatch or Project Runway‘s Wendy Pepper – self-fancied Iagos ginning up the green-eyed monster in otherwise rational competitors. Which is why it’s insane that any Survivor veteran in 2013 — let alone the veterans who’ve been invited back to play — can be so naive as to allow a blatant manipulator like Vytas plow through their preordained plan of attack with almost no pushback. Vytas is not just manipulative. He is hauntingly stalwart in his plan to undermine his female teammates with “vulnerability.” “We’re eliminating you!” his teammates tell him. He blinks once and responds, “Oh. Right. You are. Thank you for telling me. Thank you. But… you won’t.

In the 27th (!!!) season of ‘Survivor,’ contestants have a new, unique challenge: going against their loved ones in order to win.
After the 4th season of the 13-year-old hit show Survivor, tribes stopped being divided into simply two teams of eight. It then went off into tangents of age, gender, returning contestants, and more. Colton Cumbie may have left Survivor: One World after only 16 days due to a bacterial infection, but he spent seemingly every waking moment of those 2+ weeks establishing himself as an unrepentant villain, a casual elitist, and a racist who declared that fellow castmate Bill was “ghetto trash” and that the only black person he regularly interacted with was his “housekeeper.” Nowadays, the 22-year-old gay Alabama native is both apologetic and ready to explain himself, and you might be seeing him do it as he interfaces with Jeff Probst yet again: Cumbie is returning to Survivor on its new season Blood Vs. Water, which premieres this Wednesday, and he’s paired up on the Phillipine island of Palaui with his fiance, 26-year-old farmer Caleb Bankston. As Bankston says himself, he’s almost nothing like Colton, and it’s clear he’s a tempering influence on his fiance’s maniacal, strategizing ways.

CBS has announced the 20 castaways competing on "Survivor: Blood vs. Water," the latest edition of the popular reality competition show. This season's theme will features duos of returning survivors plus a loved one. There's no word yet as to how exactly the tribes will be split.
Related: See all the 'Survivor: Blood vs. Water' cast pics
This season also features the return of Redemption Island, where one castaway will eventually have the chance to return to the game. The twist this year, however, is that loved ones can choose to "save" their partner on Redemption Island and switch places with them, thus allowing the exiled loved one to immediately re-enter the game. Interesting.
The producers really did their work on this cast -- there are some beloved faces returning, including Rupert Boneham (fourth time!), Gervase Peterson from the first season, and apparently Kat Edorsson is dating "Big Brother" winner Hayden Moss.

But for the latest installment of CBS's hit, Survivor: Blood vs. Water, we'll see something we've never seen before: returning contestants competing against loved ones. Sure, it would be nice to have someone from home on the island with you – but it's still every man for himself. The blindsides will be more...

Among the twists on tap for the new season, as detailed more thoroughly at Xfinity:
* The competition will actually start at nighttime, as each returning player and their loved one is stranded at a spot in the dark jungle.
* Almost straight away, each tribe will be forced to vote someone off. Those castoffs will be sent to Redemption Island — though...

The new season of Survivor - subtitled "Blood vs. Water" - will pit loved one against loved one.
But in case that alone is not enough of a twist for you, Jeff Probst and CBS have revealed a number of new rules and stipulations that are sure to the castaways we meet on the Sunday, September 29. To wit:
The season will be comprised of 39-and-a-half days, kicking off with "Day Zero," where 10 pairs of loved ones will be sent out to different locations at sunset. "The whole idea was to try and get them thinking and maybe believing that they would play as a pair,” Probst tells EW. The loved ones will then be split into two tribes, with returning players on Galang and their heretofore believed-to-be partner on Tadhana. Redemption Island will return after three seasons, this time revolving around a three-person contest in which the last-place finisher is sent home.

Jeff Probst already announced on Entertainment Weekly Radio that the next season of Survivor — subtitled Blood vs. Water — would feature returning Survivor contestants playing with (or, rather, against) their loved ones. Then, yesterday we revealed that one of those pairs would be Survivor: One World’s Kat Edorsson and her boyfriend, Big Brother season 12 winner Hayden Moss. Now the rest of the cast can be officially unveiled. And that cast will be playing in the most twist-heavy Survivor season ever.

"Survivor: One World" may have changed things up last week by recomposing its formerly gender-aligned tribes, but one thing remained consistent: Another week, another victim of The Reign of Colton. This week's Colton-approved evictee was Monica Culpepper, wife of former NFL defensive tackle Brad Culpepper. Monica was blindsided after being repeatedly reassured by Colton that first Christina and then Tarzan were his actual targets. Instead, the puppet-master decided that Monica was so strong and well-liked that she had to be booted first. In our exit conversation, Monica discusses why she felt so betrayed by Colton, why she had a...

Battle of the sexes? That's so last week. This week on "Survivor," it's all about gods and peasants.
The original conceit of "One World" — two same-sex tribes, one beach — was cast aside this week in favor of a new twist: The men and women have swapped tribes, resulting in two mixed-gender teams. On one side is Salani, composed of the game's smartest, sexiest players.
On the other side of the aisle is Manono, consisting of ... well, everyone else. Season villain Colton Cumbie continues to dominate the orange-wearing Manono even (and especially) through adversity, going so far as to convince his defeated tribe to oust their strongest member, Monica, because she was his "biggest threat." In short, Colton and his men...

Survivor 24,One World voted off Monica Culpepper in episode 5 tonight. Tonight's episode kicked off with the ladies, talking about how dumb the guys were for letting Colton convince them to give up immunity in the last episode. However, they're glad they did because they have more numbers than the guys, now. After the break, they showed Rewards Challenge footage. Just before it started, host Jeff Probst revealed that they were switching tribes. He had each contestant crack an egg on their wrist. Whichever color they got, sent them to the tribe it belonged to. At this point,a few of the women and men got switched to different tribes, causing it to be coed again. In the Rewards Challenge, the tribes had to race to fill up a container with enough water to weigh it down enough to race their flag. The Salani tribe ended up,pulling out the victory,...
