Hasan Minhaj is reprising his role as The Riddler for a spinoff of the hit Spotify and DC audio series, Batman Unburied.
The Riddler: Secrets of the Dark will debut later this year exclusively on Spotify. The show, like Batman Unburied, is created by David S. Goyer and will feature returning characters from the Batman Unburied series, though casting for leads like Batman, who was portrayed by Winston Duke in Batman Unburied, have not yet been announced.
“Everything you loved about Batman Unburied — Batman, Riddler, Barbara Gordon and several others —all of these iconic characters will be returning to Gotham City. But this time, instead of Batman saving The Riddler, Batman needs The Riddler to help save the Bat from certain death,” Minhaj said in a prerecorded video at Spotify’s Stream On event on Wednesday. “And this time, finally, the Riddler gets the spotlight that he deserves.”

As James Gunn and Peter Safran reshape the DC universe at Warner Bros. Discovery, film and TV aren’t the only mediums where iconic characters like Batman, Harley Quinn and the Joker are taking on new lives.
Thanks to an expansive, multiyear first-look deal with Spotify, DC has attracted new and returning fans to its rich IP — without being beholden to the intricacies of a mapped-out multiverse, the same actors portraying its characters or the costs of a typical high-wattage and effects-heavy superhero production.
The partnership kicked off in earnest last year, when Spotify and DC released an original story about Batman for an audio series penned by The Dark Knight scribe David S. Goyer. Starring Winston Duke as Bruce Wayne, Batman Unburied took on a decidedly darker tone as a psychological thriller that followed Bruce tracking down a serial killer and confronting his own demons along the way. Christina Ricci is heading to Gotham City.
The Yellowjackets star has been tapped to lead the voice cast for Spotify and Warner Bros.’ next audio series, Harley Quinn & The Joker: Sound Mind, as Harley Quinn herself. Ricci will be joined by Billy Magnussen as the Joker and Justin Hartley as Batman.
The series, which has begun production, was developed by Homecoming writer and executive producer Eli Horowitz and tells the story of Gotham villain Harley Quinn from her perspective — instead of the Joker’s. The series begins when Quinn is still known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, a top psychologist at Arkham Asylum who is determined to help the patients her colleagues have given up on.

Summer’s not just the time for big family vacations, y’know. Though it’s five months away from Valentine’s Day, couples still want that romantic quiet getaway. And that’s just how this week’s new movie release begins. And as with many outings, well things don’t go as planned. Usually, it’s fodder for a zany slapstick comedy, or a tender love story, or the beginning of a nightmare, And considering that the producers are tauting the lead actress’s most recent, popular work, you can figure out that we’re taking a trip into terror. We’re right by her character’s side as she tries to find out why her partner has Gone In The Night.

This film was originally reviewed out of SXSW 2022 under its previous title, “The Cow.”
In writer-director Eli Horowitz’s labyrinthine, mostly unpredictable thriller “Gone in the Night,” becoming increasingly risk-adverse is one clear symptom of getting older.
Part unlikely friendship tale and part potpourri of genre tropes orchestrated as a parade of red herrings, this debut feature takes on modern culture’s blatant disdain of aging and veneration of youth.
It begins with a common sequence: two people driving on an empty tree-lined road. They are, of course, heading toward an isolated destination in the middle of nowhere. Middle-aged hydroponics expert Kath (Winona Ryder) and her younger, man-child boyfriend Max (an amusingly annoying John Gallagher Jr.) have decided on an impromptu getaway to a rented forest abode as part of an ongoing dynamic in which he constantly dares her to be more adventurous.

A tricky narrative requires deft execution, something that turns out to be well beyond the capabilities of “Gone in the Night.” Presented at SXSW earlier this year as “The Cow,” writer-director Eli Horowitz’s first feature has a wide-eyed Winona Ryder as a woman taken back when her boyfriend goes Awol from a weekend getaway.
What at first looks like a standard missing-person suspense tale turns out to have a more complicated agenda — but it is so haphazardly advanced and clumsily articulated, the film itself seems to be fumbling around for a cohering structure or mood. Vertical Entertainment opens the indie feature on July 15; its star’s renewed visibility via the new Netflix’s “Stranger Things” is likely to lend more of a boost in eventual home-formats release.

Kath is tired: she's getting older and feeling it. Despite a job and business she likes, her younger boyfriend perhaps has the opposite effect of what she had hoped. His boundless energy makes her feel the lack of her own even more, and she knows he's frustrated as she just can't seem to move out of her own, comfortable rut. So when she agrees to an adventure, she hopes it might give her the spark she needs. Well, it does give her a spark, but that soon ignites into quite a blaze. Gone in the Night is something of an atypical sci fi thriller, reading like an extended Twilight Zone episode in content. Given that this is the feature debut of Eli Horowitz, the creator...

"When they want something, they'll do whatever it takes." Vertical Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for Gone in the Night, a mysterious new thriller from filmmaker Eli Horowitz. This just premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival a few months ago, and will be arriving to watch later this summer. When Kath and her boyfriend arrive one evening at a remote cabin in the redwoods, they find a mysterious couple already there. Her boyfriend disappears with the young woman, and Kath becomes obsessed with finding an explanation. She enlists the help of an unlikely supporter, played by Dermot Mulroney, with discovering an answer for their sudden breakup— but the truth is far stranger than she could have imagined. Winona Ryder and John Gallagher Jr. star with Owen Teague and Brianne Tju. This trailer gives away quite a bit, except for the final big reveal of what is going on and what really happened.

Barely over two years ago, the Den of Geek staff was mere days away from heading to Austin when the inevitable happened: SXSW and all its strange and glorious intersections of film, music, technology, games, and more was canceled due to the then only dawning Covid-19 pandemic. A virtual alternative eventually went forward some months later, and there was a virtual SXSW in 2021 as well, but to concede things haven’t been the same in Austin is an understatement.
Which is perhaps why nearly every face, and every person we spoke with, over the last several weeks in the Texas state capital seemed to have an incorrigible grin on their face. Be they fans or filmmakers, actors or music artists, or even just folks walking down the street, the thrill and good vibes was everywhere. SXSW is back where it once belonged.

Eli Horowitz’s The Cow offers a rather convoluted approach to an unfortunately straightforward story. For much of its runtime, however, the film successfully offers the kind of misdirection that best not be spoiled in a review.
The premise seems simple enough—a forty-something couple, botanist Kath (Winona Ryder) and her boyfriend, a former student of hers by way of a continuing education extension course Max (John Gallagher Jr.), drive to a remote cabin in the woods. When they arrive they find the place has been double-booked, leading to a weird compromise: a younger couple inhabiting the cabin agree to let them stay the night. They are Al (Owen Teague), a socially awkward introvert, and the much more outgoing Greta (Brianne Tju).
In the process they make the night a mini-party over wine, drinks, and a bizarre vintage board game they’ve found—Pillow Talkers, which is meant to be...

There are certain actors who seem to have grown up before the public’s eye. Whose very existence serve to remind us of our own mortality. It’s fitting then that a movie about the relentlessness of time and the horror of aging would star Winona Ryder, who we’ve seen from her breakout teen years age through every phase Hollywood allows women. Co-written and directed by Eli Horowitz (“Homecoming”), the romantic horror, “The Cow,” stars Ryder as Kath, an older woman thrown for a loop when her younger boyfriend suddenly leaves her seemingly for a younger woman.
Ryder is fantastic, in her first film role since 2018’s “Destination Wedding,” bringing her trademark wry humor, expressive eyes, and fiery energy to Kath.

Age is never far from Kath’s mind. When her younger boyfriend steps away for a moment, Kath steals some time to check out the wrinkles on her forehead, frowning over what she sees, trying to smooth away the years with her fingertips. Kath (Winona Ryder) knows that she and Max (John Gallagher Jr.) aren’t exactly well-matched, but she’s been down the marriage path before and it didn’t work out so well, so why not see what happens with eager-puppy Max? When Eli Horowitz’s “The Cow” opens, Kath and Max have been dating for just over a year — he was a student in her continuing education class, only signing up for the plant lover’s course because he very much misinterpreted what “hydroponics” meant — and things have been going alright. As the pair set out on a weekend away in the country, it seems that perhaps they’ll get better.

"The Cow" is one of those puzzling mystery movies that cheats at every turn, deliberately obfuscating pretty much every detail until the last possible second. It's not about keeping you guessing. It's about keeping you completely in the dark before flipping on the lights and yelling, "Gotcha!" There are ways to make such an approach work, but "The Cow" hasn't found them. Instead, Eli Horowitz's mumblecore-ish thriller keeps jumping back and forth in time, cluing us in on what's happening via randomly placed flashbacks that seem to be from no one's perspective.
Kath (Winona Ryder) is coming around to the fact that her...

The Cow is a film about a mystery that comes with many mysteries of its own, chief among them being the question of why Winona Ryder’s career is so shaped by her past. Stranger Things may have brought her back to the public eye, but it seemed to claim her as an ’80s icon when Ryder only had a walk-on part in that decade’s final reel. Her role in Darren Aronofsky’s 2010 ballet psychodrama Black Swan likewise came with a sting in the casting, pitting Ryder as the outgoing grand dame against Natalie Portman as an ingenue snapping at her heels. And here again, much mention is made of her age when Sandra Bullock—seven years her senior—could lead a bigger movie without a peep.
The good news is that Ryder is easily the best thing about Eli Horowitz’s debut feature, a twisty thriller that packs...

Season 1 of “Homecoming” is still the gold standard for podcast-to-tv adaptations. Next week, people involved on both sides of that process will try to capture the magic in audio form.

Written by “Homecoming” co-creator Eli Horowitz and “Sandra” writer Kevin Moffett, the new series not only shifts its gaze to a fictional author, it trades in an episodic structure for a feature-length audio tale.

Grammy-nominated singer Janelle Monae successfully walked the “tightrope” into the acting arena in 2016 when she appeared in two of the years most acclaimed films, “Hidden Figures” and “Moonlight.” Four years later, her star continues to rise as she makes the move to leading lady in the feature film “Antebellum” and the second season of Amazon Prime Video’s TV series “Homecoming.” In the latter she plays Jackie, a woman who wakes up alone in a boat with no memory of how she got there. And that role could land the entertainer her first Golden Globe nomination.
As of this writing, Monae is ranked eighth in our Golden Globes TV odds for Best Drama Actress, but she’s on an upward trajectory. The first season of Homecoming was deliberately claustrophobic, set largely in the Homecoming Transitional Support Center with nods to All the President’s Men and The Parallax View. Season 2 of the Amazon Prime Video drama is a little bit less Alan Pakula and a little more Brian De Palma, according to director/executive producer Kyle Patrick Alvarez.
“One of the draws to me was, having loved Season 1 so much, and having loved Sam [Esmail]’s aesthetic approach, the challenge was how do we translate that feeling when so much of that feeling was the Homecoming facility set,” Alvarez said during Deadline’s Contenders Television virtual event. “That was so meticulously designed to fit that tone, but now we’re going to be in forests and lakes so we have to re-conceive how to technically approach the scenes so that it felt like Homecoming but on a larger canvas. There’s very little that can be said about “Homecoming” Season 2 without venturing into spoiler territory, so let’s start with this: Anyone who loved the ambiguous ending of Amazon Prime’s first season, especially if you were taken by the profound connection between Walter Cruz (Stephan James) and Heidi Bergman (Julia Roberts), should enter into Season 2 with caution. It’s not that podcast creators and series showrunners Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg provide a definitive answer as to what or who Walter remembers after his “treatment” at the Homecoming facility (though they kinda do), or even that they’re dismissive toward that poignant final moment so beautifully composed by Season 1 director Sam Esmail — far from it.
Everyone involved in crafting Season 2, including new full-time director Kyle Patrick Alvarez (“The Stanford Prison Experiment”), seems hellbent on telling a story that exists on the periphery of what came before. That helps...

Season 1 of the show told the story of the Homecoming Transitional Support Center, a private facility working to treat veterans arriving home from war (and score a fat government contract in the process). Through caseworker Heidi Bergman’s interviews and interactions with young veteran Walter Cruz (Stephan James), it is slowly revealed that Homecoming’s mission seems more nefarious than previously realized.
Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg will continue on as co-showrunners for Homecoming season 2. Kyle Patrick Alvarez will direct all episodes.
At first glance Homecoming Season 1 appeared to tell a very complete story, rendering any future seasons unnecessary. But a second season has always been in the cards for Homecoming. Amazon...

Starring Stephan James (“If Beale Street Could Talk”) in a breakout role that proved his leading man chops, “Homecoming” takes place on a secret government compound that is developing experimental Ptsd therapy and using American soldiers as test subjects.
