A lot of filmmakers have attempted to create a new horror icon for the next generation, and most have failed rather miserably. "Terrifier" director and special effects artist Damien Leone has managed to usher in a fresh wave of blood and terror with his creation, Art the Clown. The enormously successful sequel, "Terrifier 2," was designed and crafted from the ground up with a ragtag FX team, where most of the gloriously gory set pieces were done almost exclusively by Leone and producer Phil Falcone. To achieve the amount of viscera needed to send even the most hardcore gorehounds heading for the aisle, there were some very special ingredients involved to ensure the maximum amount of gross-out potential.

When Terrifier 2 was released in theaters, much of the conversation surrounding it was devoted to its gruesome practical effects, insane levels of violence and gore, and audience reactions that included vomiting and fainting on a level not reported since the release of The Exorcist nearly fifty years before. It was being sold as a movie that would test the mettle of even the most hardened horror fan, almost like a dare, and I was excited to take that challenge. When I settled into my seat a couple weeks later, I expected to be grossed out old school, to paraphrase Stephen King’s Twitter review of the film. What I did not expect was for memories of junior high confirmation and college religion classes to be awakened. I am no theologian, but I have read and studied the Bible throughout much of my life and familiarized myself with many of...

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the horror movies on this list.
2022 was nothing short of a banner year for horror. Way more films were met with critical praise and box office success, from Jordan Peele's third studio feature "Nope" to "Smile" and "Terrifier 2." Yes, there were several protagonists to root for, but a horror movie would be nothing without a deliciously disturbing villain. In 2022, villains ranged from the supernatural (Pinhead from "Hellraiser") to the definitely human (Steve from "Fresh") and everything in between. There was no shortage of evildoers that wreaked absolute havoc and left a trail of bodies in their wake.
Below, we take a look at some of the year's less-than-stellar releases where villains stole the show. To qualify for this list, the films themselves either lean into polarizing territory or had debatable in their quality. But these villains were the glue that held their respective films together.

One of the first qualities that comes to mind when admiring Terrifer 2 and the Terrifier franchise in general is the practical effects, and rightfully so. Director Damien Leone and team have concocted such seamless and impressive SFX work that can feel like a lost art within a current filmmaking landscape that heavily relies on CGI and easy fixes. In fact, T2 fans have become so assured in the film’s practical effects excellence that they have often (incorrectly) ascribed the final visuals to it entirely, which is not the case.
After scrolling through social media comments that misunderstood the film’s usage of visual FX work— one in particular that wrongly attributed the mid-credits Art’s (David Howard Thornton) head-on-lap/birthing scene to “lack of digital replacement” and an animatronic head— Leone and “Kill” Josh Petrino, T2’s primary VFX artist, developed an inside joke for the “thankless job” that is often VFX work.

Earlier this year, Kevin Smith purchased the movie theatre he used to go to in his youth, the Atlantic Moviehouse at 82 First Avenue in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, and turned it into Smodcastle Cinemas. Last month, Bill MacKay (@Barbarian_Pug on Twitter) tweeted out the idea of Smith hosting a Terrifier double feature at Smodcastle Cinemas, with director and cast Q&As… and Smith quickly turned that idea into a reality! There will indeed be a Terrifier and Terrifier 2 double feature at Smodcastle Cinemas on December 10th, starting at 7pm, and tickets are available at This Link. The price to attend the double feature will make a lot of sense to Smith fans: it’s 37 dollars.
Smith will be moderating Q&As with the cast and crew for both of the films.
On December 10th!
Come get scared shitless at @SmodCinemas when we host the cast & crew of @TerrifierFilm!

This article contains major spoilers for "Terrifier 2."
In a horror movie season dominated by Michael Myers ("Halloween Ends"), killer grimaces ("Smile"), and hellish Airbnbs ("Barbarian"), Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) has earned a spot among the greats with "Terrifier 2." Earlier in the fall, the sequel to director Damien Leone's 2016 splatter flick received not only positive reviews but great word-of-mouth buzz that took Art from a genre curiosity to a full-blown pantomime slasher superstar. Its theatrical release garnered headlines about people who either fainted, vomited, or needed an ambulance called while watching it. The closest "Terrifier 2" came to actually making someone sick on set was Aew star Chris Jericho while devouring a disgusting plate of spooky gelatin.
It was those reports, in addition to the power of Leone's show-stopping practical effects, that turned "Terrifier 2" into a massive success for independent horror. A one-week theatrical...

This article contains major spoilers for "Terrifier 2.""Terrifier 2" is crushing it at the box office. As of this writing, the old-school slasher has snagged 5.25 million in receipts and continues to spread its mayhem by word of mouth. On a 250,000 budget, that's a whole lot of cheddar. While many casual horror fans have reportedly thrown up or left the theater mid-way through, others are praising it for its gnarly practical effects and gruesome violence. It's certainly polarizing, to say the least. Either way, Art the Clown has officially become a horror icon.
Throughout the film's epic runtime, Art the Clown wreaks absolute havoc and leaves a bloody trail of bodies in his wake. Sienna (Lauren Lavera) and her brother Jonathan (Elliott Fullam) are faced with not only the aftermath of their father's death but a seemingly immortal serial killer. Together, their bonds of love are put to the ultimate test.

“Terrifier 2” is the gory little horror that could.
Despite having a budget of less than 250,000, director Damien Leone’s ultra-slasher sequel has made more than 5 million at the box office since releasing in early October — and he already has plans for more.
A word-of-mouth phenomenon, the film launched from relative obscurity into the horror mainstream thanks to online reports of people fainting and vomiting while watching Art the Clown (played silently by David Howard Thornton) gruesomely hack apart his victims. The organic marketing worked bloody wonders for “Terrifier 2,” which had no financial backing from a major studio.
A follow-up to the even smaller “Terrifier” in 2016, the grindhouse-style gore is the main attraction for this fledgling franchise. The original movie introduced horror fans to Art, a wordless clown in black-and-white makeup who drags around a trash bag full of rusty knives, mallets and other tools for murder. After indiscriminately...

Following a couple festival screenings, writer/director Damien Leone’s Terrifier 2 is scheduled to receive a nationwide theatrical release, courtesy of Cinedigm, in partnership with Iconic Events, on October 6th. (Tickets are available for purchase at Terrifier2TheMovie.com.) But while most Terrifier fans haven’t had a chance to see the sequel yet, Leone is already plotting Terrifier 3.
Speaking with Slash Film, Leone said, “I basically have a structure for Terrifier 3 already. Right now, I would like to just tell a solid story where it has a nice arc for my heroes, my villains, it’s complete. So a three is, I can almost guarantee a part three. After that? We’ll see if there’s anything left and if the fans still are still accepting of this character and this franchise.“
