As much grief as we give Disney Adults, one of the most shamed groups of people on the internet, we must now all come together to defeat a much greater evil: the directors creating horror films using beloved childhood Disney characters as they begin to enter public domain. The copyright on the version of Mickey Mouse from the debut short, Steamboat Willie (1928), expired as we entered the new year. Already, details — and even a trailer — have been shared about two upcoming movies starring the darling rodent in a murderous capacity.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot points for “Wish,” currently playing in theaters.
Disney’s animated feature “Wish” features over 100 nods.
As the animation studio celebrates its centennial year, “Wish” pays homage to classic Disney films from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” to “Peter Pan,” “Sleeping Beauty” and more. Speaking with Variety, director Chris Buck explained they are “Disney nods” rather than easter eggs.
“We wanted to get the story to work first,” Buck says. “Once we had that, and we started going into production, we could start layering in all the nods.”
It wasn’t just fellow director Fawn Veerasunthorn and writer and Disney Animation chief creative officer Jennifer Lee helping to incorporate them. According to Buck, “every artist and every department was saying, ‘What if we tried this?'”
While some are more obvious than others, Buck teases, “There are so many that are truly hidden,...

Who could ever forget Disney’s classic animated film Pinocchio and the song that opened the fairy tale, “When You Wish Upon a Star,” sung by Cliff Edwards, the voice of Jiminy Cricket? The 1940 animated film is true Disney cinematic magic. That is not the case, however, with Disney’s latest animated film Wish which pays tribute to classic Disney films, including Peter Pan, Bambi, and of course the aforementioned Pinocchio, but pales in comparison.
Wish is a fairy tale lacking engaging characters, memorable songs, and any sense of true magic.
The soulless film opens with a voice-over by Asha (voiced by Ariana DeBose), a 17-year-old native who belts out the song “Welcome to Rosas” which serves to explain the legend of the island (called Rosas). After the loud, energetic number, Asha is off to interview for...

"When You Wish Upon a Star" is considered by many to be the signature song of The Walt Disney Company. Written by Leigh Harline and Ned Washington for 1940's "Pinocchio," the song originally performed by Cliff Edwards as Jiminy Cricket has accompanied the production logos before most Disney films since the 1980s. The roaring sound of "When Dreams Come True" sets the stage to help transition audiences out of the real world, and into the land of Disney magic.
It's a tune synonymous not just with its source movie, but Disney as a brand, company, and cultural touchstone. So much so that when Disney put out "Once Upon a Studio" to honor 100 years of Disney Animation, the short ends with a century's worth of characters joined together in a singalong led by Jiminy Cricket. There's almost a Pavlovian response at this point to hearing the tune,...

“When You Wish Upon a Star” is one of those songs, like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” that’s bigger than a song. It was first heard, of course, in the 1940 Walt Disney animated classic “Pinocchio,” where it was sung by Jiminy Cricket. Disney made it the company theme song in the ’50s, and since the early ’80s it has been featured in the studio’s motion-picture logo. Steven Spielberg added a layer of fairy dust to the song’s mythology when he talked about how close he came to playing it over the final moments of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” For Disney, “When You Wish Upon a Star” is more than an anthem — it’s a totem of corporate magic, a statement of everything the company represents and holds dear.

Ideally timed to Disney’s centennial, a short film entitled “Once Upon a Studio” assembles 100 years’ worth of animated characters from the company’s vaults for a group photo outside Walt Disney Animation Studios headquarters in Burbank, Calif. That’s the building, shaped like Mickey Mouse’s conical blue hat from “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” where the walls are lined with images from a century’s worth of iconic toons.
Conceived and directed by Trent Correy and Dan Abraham, the project involves a live-action walkthrough of the place where the magic happens — that is, where much of the work on Disney’s animated features is done. But there’s an extra sprinkling of magic here, as cartoon characters leap out of their frames and wander the halls where they were originally drawn or rendered.

As Disney Animation celebrates its centennial, the studio released the trailer for its nostalgic Once Upon a Studio, an animated short that the filmmakers describe as a love letter to the studio, its artists and fans.
During a press preview Thursday, Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee remembered the Zoom meeting during which writers-directors Dan Abraham and Trent Correy pitched the story. “I couldn’t talk. I was so emotional,” she said, as Abraham added, “I will never forget that pitch. She made us cry, right from the start.”
It begins with a live-action shot in the lobby of Disney’s animation building, as a young employee chats with Disney legend Burny Mattinson, who joined the studio as a teenager in 1953 and stayed until his death this year.

There’s nothing little about the whopper at the heart of “A Little White Lie,” a comic drama about fame and impostor syndrome. The movie’s central conceit — pretending to be a renowned author, a janitor accepts an invitation to visit a liberal arts college — is rife with potential. But writer-director Michael Maren (whose 2014 debut “A Short History of Decay” also featured an author protagonist) sticks to the obvious, ignoring potential themes of blind celebrity worship and oblivious academia that would have added some satirical edge to this genial but dull movie.
Based on Chris Belden’s 2013 novel “Shriver,” “A Little White Lie” focuses on a handyman (Michael Shannon) leading a reclusive life in a rundown apartment building who receives an invitation from a university to be the guest of honor at their annual literary festival.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is an Oscar frontrunner for best animated feature, and if it wins, it won’t be the first time the Academy has honored the wooden puppet who longs to be a real boy. In 1941, Walt Disney’s Pinocchio became the first animated feature to win Oscars for best original score and song, for “When You Wish Upon a Star.” The 1940 film, based on children’s novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, was the second animated feature released by Disney, after 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (which, incidentally, also earned an Oscar nomination for original score). Composers Leigh Harline and Paul J. Smith, who had written the music for Snow White with Frank Churchill, were enlisted to craft Pinocchio‘s score. Harline and lyricist Ned Washington wrote the tune “When You Wish Upon a Star,” which was immediately recognized by Disney as...

Jim Henson’s Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas (1977) may not be as widely known as Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966) or Rankin/Bass’ Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964). But it is no less enchanting or enduring than those Christmas TV specials.
Based on the 1971 children’s book by Russell Hoban, it was produced by The Jim Henson Co. and premiered in Canada on the CBC on Dec. 4, 1977, then in the U.S. on HBO one year later. Emmet was technically ambitious, employing new Muppets wizardry that bridged the gap between The Muppet Show, which debuted in 1976, and The Muppet Movie (1979) — including elaborately rigged sets (that had floors) and radio-controlled puppets. The plot, bookended by appearances by Kermit the Frog, follows Emmet and his widowed Ma, residents of Frogtown Hollow, who do odd jobs for residents, some of whom cheat them out of payment.

Hey kids, want to see a movie revolving around an aging male character dealing with a mid-life crisis who’s desperately afraid of his impending mortality? Just in time for Christmas?
Not so much? Didn’t think so. Now what if I told you that it was a Puss in Boots movie?
It’s been nearly two decades since the adorable Puss made his screen debut in Shrek 2 and 11 years since his starring debut, and he’s worse for the wear. In an elaborate action sequence that opens his new animated adventure Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, he gets killed. That normally wouldn’t be a problem for a cat with nine lives, except that Puss has now lost eight of them. Naturally, that prompts a visit to his concerned physician (Anthony Mendez), who advises him to adopt some lifestyle changes.

August theatrical releases were a bit sparse, but “Partner Track,” “Lost Ollie” and seven other book-based projects found their way onto streamers last month, including HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon.” September has more theatrical releases, but fewer book adaptations to look forward to. Those that are coming out this month have rich history though, especially “The Rings of Power” series that Amazon has based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s books and appendices.
There’s also “The Silent Twins” starring Letitia Wright and Jodhi May as well as Andrew Dominik’s feature film “Blonde” adapted from Joyce Carol Oates’ book about the career of Marilyn Monroe.

When you wish upon a star, it doesn’t matter how original you are. That’s certainly Disney’s hope at the beginning of the new, Robert Zemeckis-directed Pinocchio. The film marks the latest “live-action” remake of a classic from the Walt Disney Animation Studios catalog. And in this case, it’s pulling from one of the oldest.
Walt Disney’s original Pinocchio was only the second feature-length film made by his animation house after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from three years earlier. Pinocchio is also where the Walt Disney Company got its unofficial theme song, “When You Wish Upon a Star.” To this day, you usually hear an orchestral version of the tune every time you see a new Disney movie that gets the banner logo title card at the beginning. The latest in Disney’s interminable run of remakes, Robert Zemeckis’ Pinocchio is not a reimagining of the classic Carlo Collodi story or animated classic so much as a slick bit of content to pad out Disney’s streaming service. Pinocchio the puppet may have no strings, but Pinocchio the movie has no soul.
There certainly is room for another adaptation of the Pinocchio story — even as we await a stop-motion version from Guillermo del Toro later this year and just received one starring, um, Pauly Shore in 2021. Collodi’s novel is a more mischievous and dark take than Disney’s adaptation, and the story is ripe for exploration. Living in a world of AI and invisible helpers on our phones makes its ideas of humanity and reality more relevant, and the original animated film’s episodic structure provides avenues for a curious filmmaker to dig deeper into its themes of family,...

Disney's live-action remake of "Pinocchio" finally arrived on Sept. 8, and the beloved children's tale has gotten a complete magical makeover. The overhaul of Disney's 1940 classic stars newcomer Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as the titular wooden puppet, Tom Hanks as his woodworker father Geppetto, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the wisecracking Jiminy Cricket, and Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy, who grants Pinocchio's wish to become a "real boy." While the star-studded Robert Zemeckis-directed reimagining (not to be mistaken for Guillermo del Toro's "Pinocchio" hitting Netflix in December) of course pays homage to its predecessor, it also follows its own set of rules.

When you wish upon a star, endless adaptations of a classic folktale are possible, and the latest rendition of “Pinocchio” comes from director Robert Zemeckis. The Academy Award-winning director guides his live-action retelling of a wooden puppet who wishes to become a real boy. The original tale was written by Carlo Collodi in the late 19th century and was, of course, famously adapted by Disney in animated form in 1940.
Guillermo del Toro also has an animated version of “Pinocchio” coming to Netflix at the end of this year, with Ewan McGregor voicing Jiminy Cricket.

Review: Disney’s remakes of their classic animated masterpieces come in two distinct flavors: reinventions that play with the conventions of the original story in a new way like Maleficent and Alice in Wonderland or they are almost beat-for-beat reenactments of the original with photo-realistic animation or live actors like in The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. Occasionally, these new films are refreshingly unlike the films that inspired them, like Cruella or even Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book, while still maintaining the heart and soul that earned the originals the title of “masterpiece”. Now, we’ve got to wait a few more weeks for the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe installment, the much-anticipated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Oh, but you’re very close as this new film is from another ‘branch” of this huge studio “Redwood”. Nope, not that “galaxy far, far away” either. This springs from the fountain that helped form the Disney dynasty. You see, when the MCU began its climb to multiplex majesty, other studios combed their libraries to cultivate their own “multiverse”. When “Pinocchio” was released in 1940, audience members hoping to watch the eponymous puppet hero interact with an impeccably rendered, photorealistic pile of horse manure would have left the theater disappointed. But 82 years and countless technological advances later, a new remake offers Disney fans the chance to do exactly that. When Pinocchio first leaves Geppetto’s workshop and ventures out into the real world, he encounters a massive pile of dung (complete with CGI flies buzzing around it) and crouches down to take a sniff.
While the film’s direct-to-streaming release will prevent cinephiles from witnessing that moment on the big screen, it is nevertheless a shot that immediately burns itself into your memory. And it’s perhaps an inadvertent metaphor for what Disney’s shameless IP regurgitation has turned into, as the image of the beloved character poking at literal horseshit raises an interesting question: “Who on Earth was asking for this?...

Why are filmmakers so enamored of “Pinocchio”?
Yes, Carlo Collodi’s 1883 tale touches on some timeless themes, like love, loss and lies. But its goal is to teach children by terrifying them. From a modern-day perspective, the concept is weird at best and creepy at worst.
So how come we’re still getting so many versions? There have been at least 65 adaptations, going all the way back to a silent version in 1911 and up to this year, where we have three more in 2022 alone. These variations are rarely successful, and yet new tellers are always convinced they’ve somehow cracked the code.

At this point, complaining about Disney’s deathless drive to cannibalize its entire library of animated classics into live-action remakes can feel as futile as complaining about capitalism itself. The studio has immense IP resources to exploit, a hungry well of content to fill, and a commercial imperative to introduce new generations of kids to the characters they’ll soon be expected to recognize on merch and in theme parks. And in truth, the studio could be doing a lot worse with these trawls through the archives. Once in a while genuine inspiration strikes, and even the least-fortunate of these remakes have mostly just been forgettable.
And yet something feels particularly unnecessary about the Robert Zemeckis-directed “Pinocchio,” which revisits nearly every beat of the 1940 animated classic just months before Guillermo del Toro is set to unveil what appears to be a wildly different interpretation of Carlo Collodi’s nineteenth century source material,...

Susan Sarandon admits that that she knew nothing about country music before beginning work on Monarch, Fox’s upcoming sudser that the producers describe as “Empire meets Succession.”
Sarandon plays Dottie Cantrell Roman, the matriarch of the first family of country music. She’s married to Albie, who is played by Trace Adkins.
“I just go where the fun is, where I haven’t been before,” Sarandon told reporters Wednesday during Fox’s Television Critics Tour virtual panel. As for country music, “I never knew it. I smoked a joint with Willie Nelson. That’s as deep as I go.”
The actress is also cagey about how long she’ll stick around Monarch, which also stars Anna Friel as the heir to the country crown. At the risk of spoiling a major plot point, let’s just say Dottie’s character faces a few challenges.

There's a strange thing that happens in Hollywood more often than one might imagine. Two projects get greenlit that aren't just similar, but pull from nearly the same source material. Though this often happens in early stages of projects, like when a wild story suddenly becomes a hot commodity, it's rare that both versions actually end up being born into the world at the same time.
Yet there are times when years of brainstorming, production, and post-production somehow ultimately align, leading to near-simultaneous releases that look intentionally competitive, even if they're not. This is what seems to be happening with "Pinocchio," a classic story that's somehow receiving two very distinct adaptations this fall. While one will debut in September and remake a family film we know and love, the other hits theaters in November and pull inspiration from the darker Italian novel of the same name. Let's dig into the...

‘Beverly Hills Cop’ Sequel: Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt Join Eddie Murphy in Netflix Film
“Beverly Hills Cop 4” is ramping up and has added Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt to its cast to star alongside Eddie Murphy, Netflix announced Monday.
The “Beverly Hills Cop” sequel also has an official title from Netflix, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley.”
Production on the film is now under way, with Mark Molloy sitting in the director’s chair.
The logline for “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley” is being kept under wraps, but the film is a follow-up to the trilogy of cop comedies in which Murphy plays Foley, a Detroit cop who is suspended from the force and travels to LA, only to find himself investigating the murder of a friend.

At some point in everybody's life, there comes a time when one has to choose sides. In moments as uncertain as these, it's never been more trendy to draw imaginary battle lines in the sand and die on ultimately meaningless hills. So, on that note, I ask you: Where do you find yourself landing in the ongoing debate over Disney's live-action remakes of their own beloved animated classics? No matter how much fake internet ink has been spilled either defending or deriding this rather blatant cash-grab practice over the years, one thing's for certain -- these movies make money, and Disney is very much in the money-making business.
The latest film to be dragged out of the Disney vault and reimagined in live-action form will be "Pinocchio," the timeless tale of the wooden puppet on strings who's granted a unique opportunity to live out his dreams as a real boy.

"Why on Earth would you want to be real when you can be… famous?!" Disney has revealed the full-length official trailer for their own live-action adaptation of Pinocchio, starring Tom Hanks as Geppetto. This new film is a remake of the 1940 Disney animated classic, which is itself based on the 1883 Italian book The Adventures of Pinocchio. Hanks is joined by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Pinocchio, a wooden puppet carved by Geppetto, who is turned into a living puppet by the Blue Fairy. Cynthia Erivo also co-stars with Luke Evans, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the voice of Jiminy Cricket, Keegan-Michael Key as "Honest" John, a deceptive red fox, and Lorraine Bracco as Sofia the Seagull, a brand new character. With Kyanne Lamaya as Fabiana, Giuseppe Battiston as Señor Stromboli, and Lewin Lloyd as Lampwick. Disney is giving this one the same treatment as The Lion King and Aladdin before it, but unfortunately it looks like trash.

Art Babbitt worked for the Disney studio throughout the 1930s and up to 1941, years in which he and Walt were driven to elevate animation as an art form, as seen in Snow White, Pinocchio, and Fantasia. But as America emerged from the Great Depression, labor unions spread across Hollywood. Disney fought the unions while Babbitt embraced them. Soon, angry Disney cartoon characters graced picket signs as hundreds of artists went out on strike…
The press called them “Loyalists.” But there were many reasons why hundreds of nonstriking Disney artists drove to work the morning of May 28, 1941. Dumbo and Bambi would not be completed without them. They also shared a gratitude toward Walt, who...
