In Scott Schirmer’s film Found, a boy wants to know why his older brother kills people. Marty (Gavin Brown) originally believed horror movies, something he and Steve (Ethan Philbeck) both loved, was the cause. Over time, however, the root of Steve’s evil proves to be more nebulous. There are other important factors when understanding why this young man became a serial killer and why his little brother kept his secret for so long.
Found was a dream come true for Schirmer, who sought out author Todd Rigney after falling in love with his 2004 novel. “There was just this feeling of dread that hung over the entire story,” Schirmer said. And with Rigney as his co-writer, the pair then wrote a rather faithful adaptation of the source material. Like the novel, the film begins with Marty discovering a severed head inside his brother’s bowling bag. Oddly, though, Marty...

In practically no time at all, Shudder has established itself as the prime streaming destination for all sorts of hidden gems in the horror genre. Let's put it this way, for a recent example: Any platform that provides a home for a fever dream as genuinely unhinged and utterly unforgettable as Phil Tippett's "Mad God" deserves all the plaudits and appreciation it gets.
Not content to rest on such refreshing success stories, however, Shudder is moving ahead with its next prized acquisition. "Glorious" alternately awed, scared, and delighted festival audiences upon its premiere at this year's Fantasia Fest, ahead of its recent debut on streaming. /Film's Matt Donato reviewed the film, describing it as, "Slimy, icky cosmic horror gets existential in a roadway rest stop bathroom to embrace single-location simplicity, yet existential provocation is infinite. It's a bit 'Lovecraftian Saw' as cotton-candy-colored doomsdaying pits man against hidden gobbledygook, relying...

In “Glorious,” J.K. Simmons plays the voice of an ominous Lovecraftian god lurking behind the glory hole of a random roadside restroom. That’s practically all the pitch Shudder audiences need to sample this not-nearly-as-sick-as-it-sounds oddity from genre-movie superbrain Rebekah McKendry, whose expertise in all things horror outstrips her knowledge of the basics of men’s bathrooms — including what they look like and how dudes behave when they become aware that there is someone/thing heavy-breathing in the neighboring stall. Then again, getting creative with such logistics hasn’t impacted “Porky’s” place in film culture, so why should it be a deal breaker here?
It’s just that, even at 80 minutes, “Glorious” feels four times too long for what it is. Though the movie’s premise may seem juvenile, director Rebekah McKendry navigates by an inexplicable parallel-dimension sense of “good taste”: She makes it a point to avoid...

Wes is having a day that is anything but glorious. He’s fallen asleep at the wheel, nearly driven off the road. He’s gotten drunk at a rest area and burned most of the things he took with him when he left his previous life, and for good measure, his pants as well. Now he’s hungover and pantsless in a filthy public restroom. That’s when God starts talking to him.
Well, Ghat starts talking to him, and he claims to be a God. But whoever heard of a God hanging out at a glory hole? Certainly not Wes who promptly makes for the door. But Ghat is indeed a deity and he’s not going to let Wes leave until he hears him out,...

Rebekah McKendry's "Glorious" answers a ravenous call for more goop in contemporary horror — a callback to the minds of Stuart Gordon, Brian Yuzna, and other sensationally sloppy (re: effects) genre filmmakers. Slimy, icky cosmic horror gets existential in a roadway rest stop bathroom to embrace single-location simplicity, yet existential provocation is infinite. It's a bit "Lovecraftian Saw" as cotton-candy-colored doomsdaying pits man against hidden gobbledygook, relying on dialogue and unseen characters to examine mortal sins on a universal scale. Storytelling threads aren't always tied-off tightly, but writers Joshua Hull, David Ian McKendry, and Todd Rigney have a solid sense of humor about their possible world-eater...

Director Rebekah McKendry’s newest film “Glorious” – which stars legendary character actor J.K. Simmons alongside Ryan Kwanten (“True Blood”) – world premieres at this year’s Fantasia in official selection.
Variety has had exclusive access to a teaser which hints at the film’s monstrous horror and undercurrent of humor.
The film follows Wes (Kwanten) as he waits out a hangover locked in a public restroom with a mysterious entity (Simmons) behind a glory hole. Co-written by Joshua Hull, David Ian McKendry and Todd Rigney, the story takes Wes deep into his own psyche as he wrestles with fate and a glimpse of the unthinkable in this Lovecraft-inspired comic horror.
McKendry is horror royalty, having worked for over a decade at Fangoria while lending her voice to several popular podcasts, and she shows her understanding of the medium throughout “Glorious,” pacing laughs and scares with philosophy in a vivid and cosmic mindjob.

Shudder Acquires Official Fantasia Festival Selection Glorious: "Shudder, AMC Network’s premium streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, has acquired rights to Rebekah McKendry’s Glorious starring Ryan Kwanten and Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons. The film, an official selection of the Fantasia International Film Festival, will be available exclusively on Shudder in the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand on Thursday, August 18.
Said Craig Engler, general manager of Shudder, “With Glorious, Rebekah brings Lovecraftian horror to a place it’s never been seen before: a rest stop men’s room. She and her all-star cast have created an inventive and original cosmic horror that manages to be both darkly hilarious and profoundly personal.”
“For years, I had been searching for a project that would let me show my preferred artistic style - that would let me be absurdist, sardonic, transgressive, and weird. And Glorious gets really f’n weird.

Another month, another batch of free PlayStation Plus goodies to download. And while January’s offerings are far from Sony’s strongest lineup, there’s still plenty to get your hungry teeth into.
Specifically, the latest update grants subscribers access to the PS5 version of Maneater, as well as the PS4 versions of Shadow Of The Tomb Raider and GreedFall. All three titles are available to download from now until February 1st.
For those unaware, Tripwire Interactive’s Maneater is an arcade action experience that offers players the unique opportunity of roleplaying as a bloodthirsty great white shark out on the hunt for vengeance. So, not exactly Finding Neemo, then. Our very own Todd Rigney really enjoyed his time with the game and awarded the title four out of five stars in his PS4 review, concluding:

Naughty Dog is known for creating truly captivating gameplay, pushing hardware to its limits to provide gorgeous visuals, and crafting compelling narratives that pull at the heartstrings in ways only films have previously achieved. They’re among the most prominent developers in gaming, and while the Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter and Uncharted series helped define generations, 2013’s The Last of Us proved to be the PlayStation 3’s swan song and showed that they were capable of more than bright and light-hearted games.
In fact, The Last of Us was not only dark and foreboding, but it was also utterly heartbreaking and emotionally-draining in a way that quickly placed it in an entirely new bracket of games and changed how the world viewed Naughty Dog as a whole. After its stunning conclusion, many felt that The Last of Us had achieved what few games ever had – it had told exactly...

If you’ve been paying attention to sales on the PlayStation Store as of late, you’re probably aware that Sony has been killing it when it comes to deals and discounts. Earlier in the month, there were a handful of games on sale for $1 or less, and last week, some of the best titles from the past few years got deeply discounted, including Nioh 2, which launched a few months ago to critical acclaim. With the PlayStation 5 just around the corner, we wouldn’t be surprised to see more and more games get a discount, and lo and behold, one of the year’s most popular titles has now received a temporary price cut for a week.
As reported by ComicBook.com, Sony and Bandai Namco are offering up Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot for $35.99, a 40 percent discount. This is the cheapest the game’s been available at, and if you want...

Before I even introduce the concept of Found, please understand that director Scott Schirmer has re-defined the meaning of a “shoe-string” budget. Working with literally no budget, Schirmer and his team were able to put together a feature-length horror film with an estimated $8,000, coming in under Paranormal Activity‘s already astounding $15,000 (estimated). Oren Peli was smart, used his budget to his advantage, and went with the “found footage” method that didn’t require big, expensive cameras, also keeping the story rather grounded in the effects department.
Tackling a straight narrative film like Found is a much more daunting task on such a tight budget, not being able to splurge on visual gore, A-List actors, top-notch CGI, and sprawling settings like a big-budget film. Scott Schirmer evokes the heart of independent filmmaking with his harrowing horror film, but will you be able to ignore the shortcomings of such a small budget?...

"My brother keeps a human head in his closet." So intones twelve-year old narrator Marty at the beginning of Found, a pulpy, twisted coming-of-age thriller which, by the end, subjects poor kid to such ridiculous perversion and violence that the severed head seems kinda cute in comparison. Produced on a budget that's probably even too low to be called shoe-string, Found is one part earnest coming-of-age melodrama, one part blood-soaked video-nasty. While director Scott Shcirmer's (adapting a novel by Todd Rigney) isn't completely successful navigating this tonal tightrope, there are enough memorable, and even brilliant parts of the uneven whole to make the film well-worth watching. That goes triple for those who grew up watching horror movies in the 80's and 90's. Now then, let's...

The 2012 edition of “Elvira’s Horror Hunt" and the all-star jury led by Elvira, Mistress of the Dark and Peaches Christ have named the Grand Prize winners of Best Feature and Best Short films. Read on for details!

Indiana filmmaker Scott Schirmer’s Found took the top prize for Best Feature Film while Chicago-based Danny DelPurgatario’s Other secured the Best Short Film award.
