My guest this week is Rebecca Ferguson. She recently reprised her role of Lady Jessica with Dune: Part Two, and plays the lead role in Silo, Apple TV+’s dystopian series about a community gone underground following an apocalyptic event. Ferguson stars as Juliette, an engineer-reluctantly-turned-sheriff, who uncovers alarming secrets while investigating a mysterious death.
Here, Ferguson describes the “intoxicating” experience of making the show, working with showrunner Graham Yost and her EP role, plus the elaborate and stunning sets and VFX work that went into it all.
As for Season 2 plans, how close will the show adhere to Hugh Howey’s original book series, on which it’s based? “I couldn’t possibly say,” Ferguson laughs, “but can you guess? No, don’t guess!”
Ferguson also addresses whether her character of Ilsa Faust would ever make a posthumous appearance in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two…

With Dune: Part Two’s success, Rebecca Ferguson’s filmography—which features a lead in a highly regarded sci-fi series currently airing on Apple TV+—has garnered more recognition. Yes, we are discussing Graham Yost’s science fiction dystopian drama TV series Silo. The Swedish actress expertly donned the role of Juliette Nichols, who is entangled in a web of mystery spanning the past and present.
Having said that, she obviously had to put in a lot of work to deliver a strong and complex performance. If you were to find out that she had “studied trauma” in order to assume this role, how would you respond? Well, she actually did this.
Critics gave the series favorable reviews, praising Ferguson’s performance and the production design. However, the actress has not gotten the recognition that her stellar performance so richly merits.

MGM+ has renewed sci-fi mystery thriller series Beacon 23 for a second season. The eight-episode season 2 will premiere on the streaming service in April. The news is not a surprise. The series already had been renewed by Spectrum and AMC, where it originally had been greenlit, and MGM+ is now formally committing to air it.
Starring Stephan James and Lena Headey in Season 1, Beacon 23, based on the best-selling book by Hugh Howey, is created and executive produced by Zak Penn.
Set in the farthest reaches of the Milky Way, Season 1 followed Aster (Headey), a government agent, and Halan (James), a stoic ex-military man, whose fates became entangled after they found themselves trapped together inside one of many Beacons that served as a lighthouse for intergalactic travelers. Apple TV has been on a winning streak with its recent TV series creating hit shows like Surveillance, and they aren’t stopping any time soon if their recent dystopian series is anything to go by. 2023’s Silo is a thrilling adventure series set in the far future based on the novel by Hugh Howey. It seems to tickle Graham Yost when people refer to Silo as a sci-fi drama.
Though the Apple series is as high-concept as it gets—the adaptation of Hugh Howey’s novels is about a futuristic community that exists in a massive underground vault with 144 floors — there are no spaceships in Silo. And there are certainly no lasers.
“It’s not science heavy,” says Yost, the clever mind behind FX’s Justified, who created the Rebecca Ferguson starrer for the streamer. “For me, it’s fantasy, it’s whatever. It’s alternate reality, all that stuff. But the key is to make it feel real and lived-in. I mean honestly, if you pick at the science too much, it falls apart.”
Several studios tried to pick apart Howey’s tomes before Silo finally became a small-screen reality. After Howey self-published Wool, the first book in his dystopian series in 2011, 20th Century Fox...

“Ultimately, this is a mystery show, grounded on characters in a world that we could believe in,” declares “Silo” creator and showrunner Graham Yost. For our recent webchat he adds, “What is real and what isn’t? Who controls the knowledge? And then the big thing for me is, why is this happening? Why are they living underground? That kept me going through the three books,” he says, adding with a knowing smile, “buy the books, but don’t read them until the entire television series is over, because we’re going to veer in some ways and stay close in others. But mostly we want to get the fun of revealing the answers to the mysteries!” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

There’s a specific picture that comes up time and time again in MGM+’s Beacon 23, of a lone man standing just outside a lighthouse as a massive wave comes crashing from behind. Whether the man makes it inside, whether he drowns, why he was out there in the first place are left up for the viewer to imagine, based on their own hopes or fears. But the not-knowing casts a certain mood in itself.
It’s a fitting prop for a series that similarly proves more interested in raising questions than answering them, and that likewise suggests the uncertainty might be the point. Its endless searching can prove frustrating at times, particularly when the sci-fi drama stumbles over basic flaws in its storytelling. But those with enough curiosity and patience to wait out its rough patches — and those with a taste for cerebral sci-fi — may find themselves falling under its plaintive spell.

“They’re stuck with each other, but what can they do about it?” That’s what Beacon 23, for Lena Headey and Stephan James‘ characters, boils down to, says executive producer Glen Mazzara. Based on the best-selling book by Hugh Howey, the sci-fi mystery thriller (premiering November 12 on MGM+) takes place in the farthest reaches of the Milky Way. Aster (Headey) is a government agent and Halan (James) a stoic ex-military man, who find themselves trapped inside one oof the Beacons serving as a lighthouse for intergalactic travelers. (Each is run by a highly-trained human and a specialized Artificial Intelligence.) After Aster mysteriously finds her way to the lonely Beacon-keeper Halan, a tense battle of wills unfolds, and he questions if she’s friend or foe. Because “Halan and Aster are broken people and they have trusted people in the past and been burned, when they meet, they don’t trust each other,...

For our recent webchat he adds, “you see these are ghostly people walking around, and that is the idea that humanity doesn’t really matter, it is the silo that endures.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Claustrophobia is a common side effect in the world-building of sci-fi writer Hugh Howey, whose postapocalyptic breakthrough Silo (filmed for Apple TV+) unfolds in a massive underground bunker. In the rather less compelling Beacon 23, based on a collection of his short stories, the setting is out of this world, the action largely contained within a futuristic lighthouse at the edge of the galaxy. This is where Halan (Homecoming’s Stephan James), a soldier who may have gone Awol, rescues the enigmatic Aster (Game of Thrones’ steely Lena Headey), sole survivor of a crashed vessel who appears to be an agent of the Interstellar Space Authority. There’s an immediate distrust between the two, inflamed by the facility’s gabby resident AI, named Bart (voiced by Wade Bogert-o’Brien), who accuses Halan of having murdered the most recent beacon keeper (a hilariously flamboyant Stephen Root). Why is Halan even there? What’s Aster’s story,...

Gearing up for the holidays, Disney+ series “The Santa Clauses” has dropped the trailer for its second season.
Set after the events of “The Santa Clause” films, the Christmas television series has Tim Allen reprising his role as Scott Calvin/Santa, who decides to retire from the “Santa” position in season one and find a new replacement. However, the end of the first season saw Scott fail to find an individual worthy of the “Santa” title. This time around, Scott is determined to train his son, Cal (Austin Kane), to be the perfect Santa successor.
“The best part of Christmas is spending time with your loved ones,” Scott says in the new trailer. “Which is why I’m so geeked to turn Santa into a family business.”
All doesn’t go smoothly for the Calvin family, though, and there’s a new “Mad Santa” (Eric Stonestreet) who was previously exiled...

Beacon 23, the sci-fi drama starring Lena Headey and Stephan James, has a new home.
MGM+ has picked up the series, which was originally greenlit by Spectrum Originals and AMC Networks. The Amazon-owned cabler and streamer will launch the series on November 12.
The surprise move comes after Spectrum moved out of original programming and AMC Networks has scaled back its own originals.
The show was left without a home as a result of the Spectrum decision and the move by AMC Networks, which had a second window licensing agreement for the show, to cut costs and take $400M in content write-downs.
It’s the end of a long road for the show, which was originally ordered in 2020. Spectrum and AMC had already renewed the series for a second season in August 2022, a few month into production with The Walking Dead’s Glen Mazzara and Joy Blake, a co-exec producer of The Resident,...

Updated with video: Before VFX supervisor Daniel Rauchwerger began his work on Apple TV+’s Silo, he was told the actual silo should be treated like a character — not a massive structure where 10,000 people are forced to live.
“The design was one open space, so very quickly, we treated it as one room,” Rauchwerger, whose credits include Inception and John Carter, said at Deadline’s Visual Effects + Screen event. “Every time you look up, down and sideways, you see the next room. One of the main things that became a challenge was bringing all those people to life, just living their lives.”
Based on Hugh Howey’s trilogy of dystopian novels, Silo is the story of the last 10,000 people on Earth, whose mile-deep home protects them from the toxic and deadly world outside. However, no one knows when or why the silo was built, and any who try to find out face fatal consequences.

Exclusive: Filming on the second season of Apple TV+ sci-fi thriller Silo has entered an indefinite hiatus amid the Hollywood strikes.
The series starring Rebecca Ferguson had planned to take a break in the UK this week as it switched over sets, but Deadline hears Apple is now expected to extend the pause until further notice.
