The French box office jumped 19% in 2023 with an estimated €1.3 billion ($1.4 billion) grossed from 181.2 million tickets, according to Comscore France.
Unlike in 2022, when the top 10 was exclusively dominated by U.S. movies, 2023 was bolstered by a mix of Hollywood blockbusters and French fare. Notably, “Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom” — Pathé’s big-budget comedy adventure inspired by the cult French comics — sold slightly more tickets than Christopher Nolan’s epic “Oppenheimer” from Universal.
Two other French movies ranked in the top 10: Studiocanal’s “Alibi.com 2,” the second installment of Philippe Laucheau’s comedy series riffing on adultery, and Pathé’s “The Three Musketeers: d’Artagnan” (pictured), the first of a two-part adventure saga based on Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel. The three top-grossers of 2023 in France were “The Super Mario Bros. While Greta Gerwig’s girl-power blockbuster “Barbie” is ruling over the French box office, another much younger female-led franchise, “Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir” has managed to pull approximately €8 million ($8.9 million) at the local B.O., from more than 1.1 million tickets, since bowing on July 5.
Budgeted around $80 million and directed by Jeremy Zag, “Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir” ranks as one of France’s most ambitious animated films to date.
Featuring eight original songs and a postcard-worthy Parisian backdrop, the musical film broke ground as the first female-powered superhero movie set in the French capital. Even as it faces stiff competition from “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” “Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir” has enough legs to match or surpass recent non-u.S. animated hits such as “Ballerina,” which sold 1.8 million tickets in France. It garnered 318,144 admissions on its opening day in theaters, a record for a French animated film. In Germany, the...

Female Directors On The Rise In France But Locked Out Of Blockbuster Budgets – Collectif 50/50 Study
A new study by the French cinema gender parity group Collectif 50/50 has revealed the ratio of female to male directors increased from 2013 to 2022, but that gender parity remains a long way off.
According to the study publisjed on Monday and entitled “Parity Behind The Camera”, women accounted for 27% of the 2,196 directors active over the decade in France.
At the same time, just 23.6% of the 2,876 majority-French productions shot over the period were directed only by female directors, although there had been a yearly increase for fiction features directed by women, to touch close to 30% in 2022.
The study revealed, however, that women struggled to build sustainable careers and draw big budgets for their work. Over the period, women accounted for just 11% of directors who had made more that five features.

The French movie sector saw investment and activity return to pre-pandemic levels in 2022, while streamer contributions rose, according to the annual production report of France’s National Cinema Centre.
Overall, there was $1.28 billion (1.18 billion euros) worth of investment in feature film production in 2022, against €1.44 billion (1.33 billion euros) in 2021 and $1.21 billion (1.11 billion euros) in 2019.
The number of films also stabilized at 287, down from the 2021 spike of 340 but in line with the 10-year average of 288.
The annual study, released on Wednesday, draws on budget information provided for feature film productions approved by the Cnc as eligible for its different support schemes and is seen as giving an accurate reflection of what is going on in the sector from one year to the next.

I’m hearing that buyers will today be getting The Hood, a script by Paul Greengrass that he will direct, with Benedict Cumberbatch starring. The period drama is about the peasant revolt in England, I’m told. Cumberbatch will play a farmer who become the leader in an action drama that is best likened to Braveheart, and Gladiator.
Greengrass last directed the Tom Hanks-starrer News of the World, and Cumberbatch is coming off his Best Actor-nominated performance in Power of the Dog.
CAA Media Finance and FilmNation are selling this one. Tyler Thompson’s Cross Creek is financing and producing. Thompson and Greggory Goodman are producing. Cross Creek is also producing Melody, the Jeremy Zag-directed animated musical that will star Katy Perry and is being sold here in the Cannes Market.

Cross Creek is fully financing a film that will reunite the fighting icon in matches against some of his past screen rivals.

Wild Bunch International is handling foreign sales, and CAA Media Finance is representing the film’s domestic distribution rights.

Disney Emea hosted its annual Studio Focus at this year’s Annecy Animation Festival, lamentably pre-recorded for the second edition in a row, where the company announced a pair of new African series, the sci-fi anthology series “Kizazi Moto: Generation of Fire” led by “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” co-director Peter Ramsey, and a musical kids show titled “Kiff” from South Africa.
“This year’s fest is about celebrating African animation,” said Orion Ross, VP of original programming and animation for Disney Emea. “We would like to start with how Disney is embracing the vast talent from this continent.”
Each of the shorts in “Kizazi Moto” was created to answer one question: “What does African future look like from an African perspective?”
When discussing his involvement, Ramsey recalled a visit to the Cape Town Animation Festival where he was “blown away, reinvigorated by the people, work, the industry. There was the...

It appears that there is very little Jeremy Zag is not involved in pertaining to the business world. The entrepreneur has a hand in just about everything, and it seems that he’s making it his mission in life to offer a little of something to most everyone. He’s famous for being the founder and CEO of The Zag Company, but he’s also part of production companies, he’s a director, and he is a composer. We pose the question, ‘What is it that Zag cannot do?’ and we realize we haven’t an answer. It’s time to learn as much as we

Spain-based leading European kids producer Planeta Junior has acquired a stake in Zag Entertainment, the banner behind the popular “Miraculous” franchise.
The deal, which marks a new step in the long-lasting relationship between both companies, is estimated at €300 million ($353 million), according to a source close to the pact. The amount of the stake acquired by the Spanish group was not disclosed, but the source said the pact gives Planeta Junior the possibility of increasing its stake progressively over the next four years for up to 49% of Zag Entertainment.
The two companies will also be joining forces on the production of TV content and films, kicking off with a $70 million budget animated feature based on “Miraculous” which was previously set up at Skydance Media. A global hit franchise boasting one of the only major girls-skewing superhero figures, “Miraculous” just lured Disney Plus and Disney Channel, which have boarded two mini-movies based on the IP.
