Days before stepping into the title role of Disney’s Aladdin on June 13, Broadway favorite Telly Leung is staying mum on the secrets behind that beloved magic carpet. Mostly because he’s content to remain in the dark himself.
“There’s a part of me that doesn’t want to know,” the actor tells Et of the illusion that finds packed houses at the New Amsterdam Theatre gasping night after night. “I remember seeing the show, and as somebody who’s done plenty of Broadway and knows all the tricks, I had no idea how that worked onstage. It really was magic -- it took my breath away.”

Like countless kids of his generation, Leung grew up on the 1992 animated film, which joined Disney’s successful roster of Broadway musical adaptations in 2014. “Instead of having a princess as the hero, it was cool...

The event’s creative director, Richard Kraft, has told HitFix the deets on all the exciting plans for the three shows that are sure to make Disney fans squee. Film screenings paired with a live orchestra performance of the movie’s score is no new thing. (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Back to the Future are among the concert screenings at the Bowl HitFix has reported on in the past.) But events like this, for a musical, with live singing timed to picture, are new. As far as Kraft is aware, last Halloween...

The people who brought Aladdin to Broadway did so without the help of a genie. Capitalizing off the success of the 1992 animated film of the same name, Alan Menken and Chad Beguelin began working on a stage version of the Disney musical. James Monroe Iglehart played the pivotal role of the Genie. Adapting the film for the stage was no easy task. "When people say, 'We knew Aladdin was going to happen,' I say, 'I'm glad you guys did!'" Full disclosure: Hercules features our favorite songs of any Disney songs. “Zero to Hero”? That’s a jam. “A Star Is Born,” “I Won’t Say I’m in Love,” all awesome. Maybe you prefer The Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast, but the Hercules soundtrack got us like:
Which is probably why we love this medley by the cast of the Aladdin show on Broadway — it’s heavy on the Herc. But it’s got something for the other Disney musical fans among us too. Everyone wins!
News: Here are 5 things you never knew about your favorite Disney songs!
The songs are, in order: “Go the Distance” from Hercules, “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mermaid, “Gaston” from Beauty and the Beast, and “Zero to Hero,” from Hercules. And the gentlemen performing the number are Adam Jacobs and James Monroe Iglehart, accompanied by the legendary Alan Menken.
