There's a fun new Star Wars children's book that's been released that will explore an aspect of Darth Vader that has never been explored before... the things that Darth Vader is afraid of. The picture book is called Are You Scared, Darth Vader? and it was written and illustrated by Adam Rex. As you might imagine, the book teaches kids about fear in a fun, relatable way but with a Star Wars spin.
During an interview with io9, the author talked about his book, saying:
"I ended up pitching a few broad ideas as well as an early draft of Are You Scared, Darth Vader? As an idea, it has one of those unsatisfying origin stories where I think the title came to me while waiting for a stoplight and I sat down to figure out what kind of book might have a name like that."The biggest theme that...

Several wonderfully talented artists have come together to submit some awesome imaginative art for a book called Beginnings. The art book is being crowdfunded on Crowdwise and it's all for charity to support children who are victims of the tragic events from all over the world. It's described as a way to "celebrate the innocence and wonder of childhood."
One of the coolest things about the book is the fact that it will be filled with the art showing us what inspired each of the artists when they were kids. So, there's a very personal touch to each piece that tells us something about the artist, which I think is pretty awesome.
Read through all the details and check out some examples of the art that will be in the book below. If you want to donate, click here.

Poor Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. Any other week, the estimated $34.6 million opening of their R-rated comedy "Get Hard" would be a huge coup. Instead, they had to settle for coming in a distant second to a surprise kiddie cartoon smash about a little girl and an inept alien.
"Home," the fourth film from DreamWorks Animation in little over a year, was supposed to race neck-and-neck at best with "Get Hard." After all, the film got middling reviews for its relative lack of originality and unlikely voice cast (Jim Parsons and Rihanna?). Plus, it comes from Dwa, the anti-Pixar, an animation house known in recent years for oversaturating the market and for costly flops (most recently, "Penguins of Madagascar"). No one expected it to do better than $30 million.
So how did "Home" manage a stunning debut estimated at $54 million? Maybe its perceived weaknesses were actually strengths. Here are seven secret...

New York (AP) - Business was brisk at the weekend box-office, where the DreamWorks animated alien adventure "Home" beat out the Will Ferrell-Kevin Hart comedy "Get Hard" with a resounding debut of $54 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
While the two films had been expected to vie for the top spot at North American theaters, "Home" came in well above expectations, handing DreamWorks Animation a much-needed hit. Though a distant second, "Get Hard" also opened strongly with an estimated $34.6 million, rewarding the Warner Bros. pairing of two of the most bankable stars in comedy.
Last week's top film, the young-adult sequel "The Divergent Series: Insurgent," slid to third with $22.1 million.
With a $100 million-plus debut expected next weekend for "Furious 7" - a franchise built on street-racing adrenaline and a diverse cast - Hollywood scored with two films that sought a variety of audiences.

Two big movies for you, we have the animated film .Home. from DreamWorks Animation and .Get Hard. from Warner Bros. Pictures. .Home. is based on The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex and the voice cast includes Jim Parsons (Oh), Rihanna (Tip), Jennifer Lopez (Lucy), and Steve Martin (Captain Smek). This one.s from director Tim Johnson who gave us 1998.s .Antz..
In .Get Hard,. Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart teamed up for the comedy for first-time director Etan Cohen (writer of .Tropic Thunder.). How is the chemistry between Ferrell and Hart? Is the movie funny or just brutally offensive? Take a look at my reviews of both .Home. and .Get Hard..

"Home" is the latest family-targeted adventure to pair a human kid with a friendly extraterrestrial. Like "E.T.," the big theme of the movie is finding your people. After the invasion of the color-changing aliens called the Boov, "Tip" Tucci (voiced by pop superstar Rihanna) teams up with a runaway loner Boov called "Oh" (Emmy winner Jim Parsons). She is trying to find her mom -- who was relocated along with all other humans to Australia -- while he is trying to find a friend. Together they race across the globe trying to avoid Boov security forces and make their way to Tip's mom.
Here are five issues to consider before taking your little one to see "Home."
1. Are you comfortable with bathroom humor?

Once again, Dreamworks is undone by trailers that managed not to convey the actual experience of the film they're selling. They have this weird habit of making their films look worse than they actually are, almost like they're trying to tank them. By now, I shouldn't be surprised when they make something that's good, but they keep cutting these trailers that promise crap. "Home," based on the book "The True Meaning Of Smekday" by Adam Rex, serves as an interesting example of someone doing the right version of something that someone else has bungled. In this case, "Home" is an example of someone setting out to create a character like Jar Jar Binks… and pulling it off. Because no matter what you think of "The Phantom Menace," there's a specific character type that they're doing, The Fool, the bumbler who somehow becomes a hero by virtue of being decent but stupid.

Hop aboard the cinema saucer, ’cause it’s time for another animated alien adventure. Let’s see, the last big cartoon with a human and space creature teamed-up to find home may have been Lilo & Stitch (or, perhaps it was the first big feature with that theme), so we’re probably due for another spin around the galaxy. And the whole “Earthers are odd”, gags have become a comedy staple, mostly on TV with Uncle Martin, Mork, Alf, and the “3rd Rock” gang. And there’s the whole Starman/Et movie legacy. Yes, this is a mix of comedy and a dash of drama, but the real drama may be behind the scenes with this film’s producer, DreamWorks Animation. After a couple of sequels and a TV adaptation, this is their first original feature work in two years (though it is based on a children’s’ book, “The True Meaning of Smekday...

Just as one one might wonder why it is that extraterrestrial life hasn’t been discovered yet, you’d think the existence of a solid 3D-animated film about a loveable alien is something we could confirm by the year 2015. From E.T. to Lilo & Stitch, the slam-dunk appeal of adorable interlopers from space has proven itself time and time again, but cracking this particular old chestnut in the age of 3D has only bred the likes of Planet 51 and Escape From Planet Earth. (Monsters vs. Aliens fails this test on account of siding squarely with the Monsters). Safely designed to minimize any potentially alienating elements, Home, the newest effort from DreamWorks Animation, does not mark an end to the search for a higher form of animated entertainment.
Adapted from Adam Rex’s 2007 children’s book The True Meaning of Smekday, Home follows the comfortable “mismatched buddies on a road trip” formula.

Science fiction with training wheels, fine for sucking the kiddies into geekery but with little appeal for grownup fans of animated genre adventure. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
It may well be the nicest alien invasion ever, when the blobby Boov come to planet Earth in their adorable bubble spaceships. They’re hiding out from a nasty, spiky predator and they mean us no harm, but we are thoughtlessly and inconveniently occupying their new cities, so the entire human race gets evacuated — in an involuntary way — to Australia, to a new settlement that looks rather like Truman Burbank’s hometown of Seahaven. Pleasant on the surface, perhaps, but definitely with an undercurrent of creepy, even apart from the whole alien-invasion thing.
How do seven billion humans feel about this?...

Now that even Pixar are making more sequels than original films, it's encouraging to see DreamWorks attempt to launch a fresh franchise story, but is it good enough to rival the likes of Despicable Me and Toy Story?
Based on Adam Rex's 2007 children's book The True Meaning of Smekday, Home follows an alien race called the Boov who, despite being rather incompetent, manage to take over Earth in order to hide from their enemy.
To do this, the Boov move the entire human race in big pockets of desert space, thinking they are doing us a favour in the process. On paper, if this plot was taken by someone like Neil Blomkamp or James Cameron, it could have been transformed into a rather terrifying sci-fi horror film...

DreamWorks Animation now only has one release in 2015, and this is it. So how does Home fare? Here's our review...
I'm not the first to have noticed that your chances of getting a project through the DreamWorks Animation pipeline seem greatly enhanced if you're telling a story about a nerdy outsider, or someone who struggles to fit in. In recent times along, Mr Peabody & Sherman, Turbo and The Croods have all traded on this to some degree. Home very much does as well.
In this case, the outside is Oh (voiced well by Jim Parsons), a misfit who - for reasons I never really bought - isn't that well liked by his people, the Boov. The Boov are led by Captain Smekday (and the film in turn is based on the book The True Meaning Of Smekday, by Adam Rex). Said Captain leads the Boov in their quest to run...

It looks like DreamWorks Animation finally has another hit on its hands with sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2, which opens in theaters tonight. If Dragon does indeed breathe fire at the box office, the company’s executives will finally be able to relax a little, considering that three out of four of the studio’s last efforts - Rise of the Guardians, The Croods, Turbo and Mr. Peabody and Sherman – have been financial disappointments. Next up, the studio has Home, about a girl (voiced by Rihanna) who befriends an alien (Jim Parsons) on the run from his race.
Based on the first trailer, Home is a bit more risky than some of DreamWorks’ other ventures, but hopefully kids will show up in droves to see the cute aliens, called Boovs, at the movie’s center. The studio is clearly putting a lot of trust in director Chris Johnson (Antz,...

The movie was directed by Tim Johnson and stars the voices of Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Jim Parsons, and Steve Martin. This looks like it will be a really good flick. Here's what the movie is about:

But when one resourceful girl, Tip, (Rihanna) manages to avoid capture, she finds herself the accidental accomplice of a banished Boov named Oh (Parsons). The two fugitives realize there's a lot more at stake than intergalactic relations as they embark on the road trip of a lifetime.

The Boov may not be able to shoot lasers from their eyeballs, but they can totally make your car hover. That may be the single most important takeaway message we got from the new trailer for DreamWorks upcoming movie, "Home." If you are looking for more details, we can tell you that the animated feature is directed by Tim Johnson ("Over the Hedge") and is all about what happens when an alien race, the aforementioned Boov, decide to use the Earth as their home and relocate the pesky humans. A comedy, "Home" follows the misadventures of one particular member of the Boov alien race, Oh (Jim Parsons), and a human girl, Tip (Rihanna). We found the trailer truly amusing and as we see more of the movie, which isn't due out until next March, it will be interesting to see if they're able to generate that same level of humor throughout.

Dreamworks did a little release date shuffle recently, opting to release The Penguins of Madagascar on November 26 and moving Home to the Penguins' old, March 27, 2015 date. Whether this was a response to the less than stellar performance of Mr. Peabody & Sherman (remember that moviec) or what is unclear, but today we get our first look at Home, a new animation franchise that will probably make good use of the additional months of marketing. Home is based on the critically acclaimed book "The True Meaning of Smekday" by Adam Rex, centering on the fiercely stubborn teenage girl Tip (voiced by Rihanna) and her relationship with outcast, optimistic alien Oh (Jim Parsons). Together they become the most unlikely fugitives ever to save the planet. Steve Martin and Jennifer Lopez's voices are also featured. Check out the trailer below and if you missed yesterday's premiere of the Penguins of Madagascar trailer click here.

In recent years, DreamWorks has been upping their output significantly, and though the studio has had some icy patches, the future is looking very, very good. Home, the studio’s 3D animated buddy comedy, kicks off a trio of movies for next year, with the hugely anticipated Kung Fu Panda 3 closing the year over the Christmas weekend.
2015 is pretty much guaranteed to be an awesome year for animation lovers everywhere.
The studio is continuing the How to Train Your Dragon franchise this year with the second instalment in the upcoming trilogy, with talk of expanding it into a quadrilogy, and they’ve used the family-friendly sequel to introduce Home to the masses.
When the galaxy’s most annoyingly optimistic alien finds himself on the run from his own alien race, he’s forced to team up with a fiercely stubborn teenage girl. Together they become the most unlikely fugitives ever to save the planet.
