Hollywood union publicists have selected Warner Bros.’ “Joker” and Disney’s “The Mandalorian” as winners of the Maxwell Weinberg Awards for top publicity campaigns last year.
The awards were announced Friday afternoon at the Beverly Hilton by the International Cinematographers Guild Publicists.
“Joker” won the feature film award and topped the publicity teams behind Netflix’s “The Irishman,” Universal’s “Us,” Sony’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,” Paramount’s “Rocketman” and Disney-Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame.” The Joaquin Phoenix vehicle was a smash with more than $1 billion in global box office along with receiving 11 Academy Award nominations.
The first season of Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian” took the television awards over the campaigns for “Catch 22,” “Fosse/Verdon,” “Pose,” and “Stranger Things.”
Steven Huvane of Slate PR won the Les Mason award, presented by longtime client Jennifer Aniston, who told the audience, “You really are some of the hardest working people in this town.

Oh, the irony! I’ve been covering Hollywood industry awards as a journalist for 30 years and now I’m nominated for the Press Award bestowed by Hollywood’s leading PR guild: Icg Publicists. It’s so gracious of them – thank you, huzzahs to all – but now I’ll get a toxic dose of what I report on all the time: nominee jitters.
Uh-oh: do my Hollywood industry peers really, really like me? Should I campaign aggressively? Rent out billboards on Sunset Boulevard? What should I wear on Feb. 7 when the winner is revealed at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in the same room where the Golden Globes are doled out?
Lucky for me, I know the drill. I’ve been nominated, and lost, twice in the past. Only 16 more defeats and I’ll be the Susan Lucci of the Publicists’ Award! So, please, save me: spread the word across town — Vote for Tom!

One day after “The Mandalorian” premiered as the most prominent new program at the launch of the Disney + service, the publicists responsible for its campaign have been nominated for one of the year’s top TV campaigns at the 57th Annual Icg Publicists Guild Awards, the International Cinematographers Guild Publicists announced on Wednesday.
The other nominees in the category are the publicists responsible for the campaigns for Hulu’s “Catch-22,” FX’s “Fosse/Verdon” and “Pose” and Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and “When They See Us.”
The winner will be announced at a luncheon on Friday, Feb. 7, two days before the Academy Awards. “Avengers: Endgame” directors Anthony and Joe Russo will receive the Motion Picture Showman of the Year award at that event as well.
