Ever since George Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead, there has been an obligatory conversation in films about mass abberations in human behaviour – sometimes direct and sometimes implicit – concerning their cause and the wider state of the world. This festival success from Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómez begins by stating the ambient temperature, and we watch it tick up chapter by chapter, the highest on record. Towards the end there is a remark made by one of the older characters – perhaps fanciful, but the closest thing we get to an explanation of his perspective on what will happen later – which implies that all the awful things we witness might be a solution, of sorts, to a larger problem. It’s the darkest element of the film, and it lingers even after the other explanations offered by the final shot, raising unspeakable questions which the rising...

Fernando González Gómez and Raúl Cerezo’s “The Elderly” (2022) is a Spanish-language horror film that deals predominantly with the psychological breakdown of elderly people who suffer from loneliness and deprivation. It explores the life of an elderly man named Manuel, who has recently lost his wife and suffers from acute loneliness and grief. While his son and beloved granddaughter try to take care of him, they discover a hidden, darker side to the otherwise warmhearted octogenarian, and it is not just him but all the other aged people in town who start demonstrating highly erratic and detrimental behavior, causing widespread panic and creating bloody havoc across town. The film is a deviation from traditional horror flicks insofar as its horror element is concerned. Instead of emphasizing merely the supernatural, it focuses on setting up an atmosphere of uneasiness and terror, employing psychological tropes to propel its plot. Starring Zorion Eguileor,...

Our friends at Celluloid Screams announced their programme for this year's festival. This year's programme is bookended by two Spanish-language films. The Elderly, a film I rather enjoyed this Summer, will open the festival while the much anticipated horror flick, Evil Eye, from our friend Isaac Ezban is slated to close out the festival. Other Spanish-language films include The Passenger, the first film from the duo behind The Elderly, Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómez, and Huesera, the Tribeca award winner from Michelle Garza Cervera. Other festival faves include The Harbinger, Something in the Dirt, Watcher and Holy Shit! There are a couple rep screenings worth noting - Bubba Ho-tep and Evil Dead 2 - but what really has our attention is the Ghostwatch: A 30th Anniversary...

When we shared some of the first images from The Edlerly (Viejos) we were a little ahead of ourselves when we included a teaser poster image. Out of respect for the filmmakers,, Fernando González Gómez and Raúl Cerezo (The Passenger (La pasajera)), and production we pulled that image and waited for the appropriate moment, read permission to share it with you again. With only days seperating us from the horror film's world premiere at Fantasia this Saturday, July 16th that moment is today! The teaser poster features a pair of wild, crazed eyes, likely belonging to Zorion Eguileor who plays Manuel in the film. There is nothing reflecting in the eyes but the darks rings most certainly suggest the influence of the supernatural in this...

Grimmfest, Manchester’s International Festival of Fantastic Film have announced the first wave titles for the 2022 festival – which will be returning to regular venue, The Odeon Great Northern, in Manchester on October 6th – 9th, for four high-impact, fear-filled days of the very best in genre cinema. Check out this opening barrage of international frights:
A young girl, struggling to awake from a coma, navigates the nightmare-freighted world of her own subconscious, in Ryan Stevens Harris’s astonishing steampunk gothic fairy tale, Moon Garden, which evokes the best of Jan Svankmajer and Terry Gilliam, Cronenberg and Clive Barker, for an emotionally charged, deeply personal narrative of redemption and renewal, that will enchant and haunt in equal measure. Grimmfest are thrilled to be hosting the film’s international premiere.
An international premiere, too, for Scott Slone’s whip-smart, genre-savvy reinvention of the perennially popular Paranormal Investigation Found Footage trope, Malibu Horror Story.

Madrid is in the throes of a brutal heat wave. An elderly woman jumps off a balcony and lies bleeding on the street below. Her widower claims a magnetic energy drove her to her suicide. His son moves him to their flat to take better care of him despite his wife’s protests, who fears the worst. Only his teenage granddaughter seems to feel real empathy for him. Thus begins “Viejos” where a mounting sense of dread pervades the atmosphere and the temperatures in Madrid rise to ominous levels.
Shot over six weeks between Madrid and the Navarra region, “Viejos” is the second joint outing by directors Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómez whose previous film, “La Pasajera,” sold to Dark Star in the U.S. and more than 25 territories. “Viejos” vies for the top prize in the prominent Cheval Noir section of Montreal’s 26th Fantasia Int’l Film Festival.

They decide to help her, but quickly learn that something is wrong and that they shouldn’t have let her in at all. The red band trailer was just released today. This is good not only because red band trailers are typically more extreme but it gives you an idea of what directors Raúl Cerez and Fernando González Gómez were able to pull off with the in camera...

Blasco, a one time musician, one time matador, one time pest controller and all the time old school male finds himself leading a rideshare through the mountains in a van with three women. On the way to their destination they come across a wounded hiker in the middle of the road. They rush to take her to the local hospital but soon discover that her wounds may be worse than they initially thought and that may spell doom for everyone else in the van. The root of Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómez’s horror flick is the story of Blasco, a man of the old ways finding himself in a van with three strong women. Valdimar Jóhannsson’s Icelandic-Swedish-Polish drama “Lamb,” starring Noomi Rapace was awarded best film and actress for Rapace at the 54th edition of Sitges’ International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, which wrapped Sunday.
The prizes add to an Originality Prize which the film received when competing at July’s Cannes Un Certain Regard.
“Lamb,” a horror-comedy combo, follows protagonist Maria, played by Rapace, a woman living with her husband in the total loneliness of the Icelandic countryside. According to a Variety review, “creepy-funny-weird-sad ‘Lamb’ proves just how far disbelief can be suspended if you’re in the hands of a director — and a cast, and a SFX/puppetry department — who really commit to the bit.” Lamb is produced by Go to Sheep, Black Spark Film & TV and Madants with New Europe Film Sales and A24 attached.

As the World attempts to get back on its feet two of the big questions in the filmmaking community are when and how. When can we begin making films again and how can we make them safely? I don't know the answer to how but for filmmakers Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómez over in Spain the answer to when is this August when they begin working on the horror flick La Pasajera. La Pasajera is a harrowing horror play that relies mainly on its characters and takes place in a suffocating atmosphere. It tells the story of a van shared by several passengers that runs over a hiker who walks at night on a secondary road. After taking her to the vehicle...
