X Factor act District3 have chosen their own song ahead of this week's live show. The boyband were criticised last week after mentor Louis Walsh had them sing 'I Swear', with the other judges branding the performance "dated". Gary Barlow told them: "You've had a really bad night tonight. The harmonies were off. When you watch this back you'll be disappointed. I think in the battle of the boybands, Union J have taken it tonight." They ended up in the bottom two on Sunday's results show, but were saved after the judges sent the vote to Deadlock. Melanie Masson was eliminated from The X Factor after receiving the fewest votes. (more)...

Fans of Melanie Masson have complained that her late slot on last weekend's The X Factor, combined with new voting rules, damaged her chances of staying on the show. Digital Spy readers used to describe the final singing position on Saturday shows as the "pimp slot", because it meant that the singer was fresh in viewers' minds when voting lines opened. However, fans have now renamed it the "death slot", following the switch in voting rules in 2012. Dermot O'Leary now opens the phone lines at the start of the show, so fans can vote throughout the episode and before any of the acts have even performed. Some viewers have argued that this is a disadvantage to acts who sing last, because people may have already spent their money on acts who sang earlier in the show. There was also a significant tail-off in viewers on Saturday's (October (more)...

Downton Abbey won back its Sunday ratings crown off The X Factor last night, the latest overnight data has revealed. Some 9.46m (a 36.3% share) watched the latest episode of ITV's hit period drama in the 9pm hour, while 254k (1%) caught the show on ITV1 +1 an hour later. Meanwhile, The X Factor pulled in a steady 9.37m (35.3%) in the 8pm slot, adding 345k (2%) on +1 as Rylan Clark survived another week at the expense of Melanie Masson. Strictly Come Dancing's half-hour results show, which culminated with the departure of Johnny Ball, drew 8.06m (32.5%) at 7pm. However, ITV's late scheduling of an hour-long Coronation Street in the 7pm slot, which attracted 6.24m (25.3%), would have dented Strictly. Tracy Barlow's pregnancy bombshell in Corrie was seen by a further 484k (1.8%) on +1. After Strictly (more)...

Melanie Masson has been voted off 'The X Factor'. The 44-year-old singer was sent home following a sing-off against District 3 which saw the judges send the vote to deadlock. Melanie Masson was eliminated from The X Factor tonight (October 14). The 44-year-old contestant became the second act to leave the competition this year after she was placed in the bottom two alongside District3. Masson sang 'Stay With Me', a hit for Bette Midler and Duffy, in a bid to stay in the show, battling against the boyband's version of '(Everything I Do) I Do It for You'. However, she was eliminated after the judges failed to reach a majority decision and it went to Deadlock. Turning to the judges after the contestants' performances, presenter Dermot O'Leary asked them who they would like to send home. Walsh said it was "an amazing sing-off", before voting to save his own act District3 and send Masson home. Tulisa said the acts were "completely different - but both very talented" and also voted (more)...
