“There was still so much mystery and tension, and I found myself scoring more than I ever scored before in the show with all the new characters,” reveals Siddhartha Khosla. The Emmy-nominated composer returned for Season 3 of “Only Murders in the Building” to expand the sonic identity of Hulu’s comedic murder mystery. “On a show like this, we don’t have tons of time, so we get the cuts, score them, they’re in,” remarks Khosla, “And especially since the score is sort of baked into the identity of the show, the themes and the ideas have to be there sort of early on.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

At its best, television shows use their extended running times to tell the kinds of stories that grow and change with the characters. It’s a wonderful opportunity for composer to do more than dash off a set of character themes and figure out where to seed the explosive braaaaams inside an action sequence. Some of the best TV scores of 2023 were weird, wonderful swerves that added something strange and surprising to the landscape of a show and expanded how we thought about the series. Even when dealing with returning television shows that had already forged their musical identities, our picks found interesting twists on old themes or ways of repurposing material that added something new to the plot beats we all expected/dreaded.

David Ellison’s fledgling Skydance Animation — run by head of animation John Lasseter and president Holly Edwards — has moved its movie slate from Apple Studios to Netflix. The multi-year streaming deal commences with next year’s musical fantasy “Spellbound,” directed by Vicky Jenson (“Shrek” and “Shark Tale”), featuring the voice talent of Rachel Zegler, Nicole Kidman, and Javier Bardem, and boasting a score from Alan Menkin and original songs with lyricist Glen Slater. It’s about a princess who tries to reverse a spell that transformed her parents into monsters.
Set for release in 2025 is “Pookoo,” a buddy comedy about two enemies — a woodland creature and a majestic bird — that magically trade places. It’s helmed by former Disney director Nathan Greno (“Tangled”), with original music composed by Siddhartha Khosla.
Also in the works are two prestigious features that are a result of Lasseter’s strong relationships with directors Brad Bird...

That didn’t take long. Skydance Animation has found a new home, signing a multi-year agreement with Netflix to develop and produce animated movies to be released directly on Netflix. This deal means Skydance’s full existing animated feature slate will be released exclusively on Netflix.
Deal comes as a multi-year pact with Apple comes to an end. Skydance Animation is already staked with Netflix, and the deal expands on a number of different projects. The first new one is Spellbound, a film that began its road at Apple, but will now debut on Netflix in 2024. That will be followed by Pookoo in 2025.
This deal expands on the existing relationship between the two companies who have already partnered on a number of projects including the films The Adam Project, Heart of Stone, The Old Guard, and Spy Kids: Armageddon along with the series Fubar, Altered Carbon and Grace and Frankie.

Barbie, Spider-Man, Black Panther – visions of dolls and comic-book characters inevitably will be dancing in the heads of Grammy voters when they sit down to nominate movie music for this year’s golden gramophones.
“Barbie: The Album” seems a shoo-in to compete for best compilation soundtrack, the category for movies dominated by songs. But the Metro Boomin-curated album for the animated “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” also topped Billboard’s soundtrack chart this year and seems likely to swing into competition.
On a similar note, the third edition of “Guardians of the Galaxy” film inspired another “Awesome Mix” that was hugely popular and seems poised to join its two predecessors as a Grammy nominee. The “Fast X” album and Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid,” with its new songs by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda, could also make it onto the ballot.

This article contains Only Murders in the Building season 3 spoilers.
It wouldn’t feel like late summer transitioning into the crispness of fall if there wasn’t another season of the perennial comedic murder-mystery Only Murders in the Building. Co-creators Steve Martin and John Hoffman’s New York seems to hone in on the magic of the Big Apple, wrapping you in colorful cardigans, raining orange leaves upon you, and allowing you to curl up and enjoy witty one-liners and the charming score of Siddhartha Khosla.
But don’t get too comfortable.
Like the real New York, the charm is juxtaposed with some big city crime, and in the third season, that is the murder of faded Hollywood star Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd). Ben collapses on opening night of “Death Rattle” – the play that could give Oliver (Martin Short) a new lease on his career. It also gives Charles (Steve...

“Only Murders in the Building” leveraged the full talents of Meryl Streep in Season 3, including her singing abilities. Episode 3 closed out with a powerful ballad, titled “Look for the Light,” performed by Streep and Ashley Park that was written for the show by Benj Pasek, Justin Paul and Sara Bareilles.
Showrunner John Hoffman told TheWrap that Streep immediately fell in love with the song when she first heard it over Zoom.
“I’ll never forget playing her Sara Bareilles singing that song, with Justin Paul and Benj Pasek having just composed it,” Hoffman recalled. “My favorite moment was she was listening, and Sara’s just weaving this beautiful melody and the lyrics together and then she hits this line ‘My love is a lighthouse. So darling, my darling, look for the light.’ I watch Meryl just go ‘Oh’ and she left the screen and I thought ‘Ok, we’re in a good place here.

The pandemic complicated production on Season 1 of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, so composer Siddhartha Khosla was elated to be able to assemble musicians to create his dream theme song for Season 2.
“When we first started working on this show, it was early in the pandemic. So we were limited in terms of how many players we could have performed the score together,” Khosla said during a panel for the Hulu comedy at Deadline’s Sound and Screen: Television event. “This is the type of score that is in my dream world, it would sound like what it sounded like just now where you have an ensemble of musicians playing together, feeling the music and really coming together.”
He continued, “Season 1 is a lot of me making little demos at home on my Mellotron and it was a much smaller, quirkier score. Then we would have quartets come...

Siddhartha Khosla is a six-time Emmy-nominated composer who had to say goodbye to his greatest professional experience last year with the conclusion of “This Is Us,” on which he worked for six seasons with his longtime pal and ex-roommate at the University of Pennsylvania, Dan Fogelman. “It was a wonderful experience we’re going to get to replicate again soon,” Khosla teased without revealing any more about the new project the two men are working on together, as he’s sworn to silence. “It’s something very special,” he confirmed while adding that he’s already writing themes for it. However, what Khosla is most excited to discuss is his second season composing the music for the hit Hulu comedy “Only Murders in the Building” starring Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. The show earned him a pair of Emmy noms in 2022 for...

The Society of Composers & Lyricists has announced the nominations for its fourth annual honors for music in films, TV and video games, with French composer Alexandre Desplat and American composer Bear McCreary each scoring double nominations.
Scl, the primary organization for professional media composers, will present its awards Feb. 15 at the Skirball Cultural Center, with singer-actor-songwriter Darren Criss as host.
Voting ended Wednesday night in seven categories, just hours after the Motion Picture Academy announced its shortlists for song and score for 2022 films. As noted in our Best TV Shows list, there was just a lot of television in 2022. It’s so, so easy for great work to get lost in the relentless churn of new streaming content, even as reality programming bends us ever closer to the “30 Rock” universe. It’s even easier for great musical work to get lost on television, where scores are able to have an ambition and originality the rest of a legacy IP production might lack, or to embrace experimental elements viewers may not even notice while they’re watching a conventional-looking scene. We double-checked that film legends John Williams and Howard Shore came to TV to score themes this year, because it feels like a million years ago already now.

The second night of the Creative Arts Emmys will take place on Sunday night, where hot races such as guest acting, music and stunts will be revealed.
History could be made with “Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers” from Disney+ could be the first animated movie to win for outstanding television movie, after becoming the first ever to be nominated.
However, we could see if HBO will be in line to make history if it takes the category for Barry Levinson’s “The Survivor.” HBO is able to win all the top series categories for drama (“Succession”), comedy (“Barry” or “Hacks”) and limited (“The White Lotus”). It would be the first network in history to win all four if achieved.
The guest categories are going to give some hints to the Primetime ceremony taking place on Monday, Sept. 12. We could see Nathan Lane win his long overdue Emmy for his role...

The television academy first formally acknowledged the art of small screen music composition by honoring the “Dragnet” score in 1955, and they have similarly awarded other series every year since 1968. Since 2019, only continuing scripted shows have been allowed to compete for the Best Music for Series Emmy, while others are now either relegated to the Best Music for Limited Series or Best Music for Documentary Series categories.
The 2022 slate of Best Music for Series nominees includes comedies “The Flight Attendant” (HBO Max), “Only Murders in the Building” (Hulu) and “Schmigadoon!” (Apple TV+) and dramas “Loki” (Disney+), “Severance” (Apple TV+) and “Succession” (HBO). Each nominated composer, most of whom have been recognized before, currently has a shot at achieving their first victory in this category. The playing field sounds fairly level, but let’s look closer to see if any contenders have a leg up. Be sure to make your Emmy predictions...

The songs nominated for the 2022 Best Music and Lyrics Emmy are “Corn Puddin’” (“Schmigadoon!”), “Elliot’s Song” and “I’m Tired” (“Euphoria”), “The Forever Now” (“This Is Us”) and “Maybe Monica” (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”). The last three shows are involved in a rematch after having all competed in the 2020 contest. In that case, “Euphoria” emerged victorious with the tune “All for Us.”
With its past win and pair of new notices, “Euphoria” seems like the one to watch this year. If vote-splitting doesn’t come into play, it should be able to beat “Maisel” and “This Is Us” again, but which of its songs should it push forward? And will TV academy members be able to resist “Corn Puddin’”? To determine which song most aligns with voters’ typical tastes, let’s take a look at each one individually. For the first time since 2016, all of the artists nominated for this year’s Best Main Title Theme Music Emmy are new to the category. The five opening tunes vying for this prize are those from “Loki” (Disney+), “Only Murders in the Building” (Hulu), “Severance” (Apple TV+), “Squid Game” (Netflix) and “The White Lotus” (HBO).
Each of these pieces plays an integral part in setting the mood for its series, with the associated shows ranging in genre from action to mystery to science fiction. Since these primarily instrumental songs are so sonically varied, let’s take a close look at each one to determine any advantages some may have over others. Be sure to make your Emmy predictions in this and 26 other Creative Arts categories by September 3.

Spoiler alert: This article discusses the Season 2 finale of “Only Murders in the Building” — “I Know Who Did It.”
The goal was always to hand back the investigation of Bunny Folger’s murder to the Arconia trio of Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez), according to “Only Murders in the Building” showrunner John Hoffman. After the disorientation of the season, which saw them all publicly implicated in the former board president’s killing, the executive producer and co-creator’s aim was to restore agency to the spun-around group.
“’Go get ‘em once you know how to do it,’ — the notion is to hand it to them in a way that they would present their case enough to unravel and ensnare the actual killer in their own fashion,” Hoffman told TheWrap in a postmortem interview about the Hulu show. “And it was very inspired by Agatha Christie...

According to Netflix, the Skip Intro button is pressed 136 million times in a typical day. Moreover, the feature has been adopted by streamers industry-wide. So what does it mean for a potentially iconic title theme? While approaches vary, the composers nominated for outstanding original main title theme music at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards are united in confronting the slight with good humor and unbridled creativity.
“It makes people want to up their game and to do something so catchy that people want to hear it,” says Natalie Holt, nominated for Disney+’s “Loki.” She compares it to writing a pop song: “Things that don’t get stuck in your head go in the bin.”
Siddhartha Khosla, a nominee for Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” also uses a songwriting metaphor, calling his theme “the biggest, hookiest part of the chorus.”

For Only Murders in the Building, composer Siddhartha Khosla focused on underscoring the dramatic beats of the murder mystery rather than the comedy. The series follows a trio of true crime fans in NYC who start a podcast when they find themselves embroiled in their own mystery. In an effort to give it a more “NYC” feeling, he incorporated bucket drumming into the orchestra. Using those same instruments for the bulk of the score, Khosla’s work became essential in “The Boy From 6B”, which follows the perspective of the deaf character Theo Dimas (James Caverly). Only Murders in the Building is nominated for 17 Emmys in its first season, including Outstanding Comedy Series and two nominations for Khosla for his score and the main title theme.

When composers are struggling on a piece, sometimes all it takes is one simple directive or another set of eyes — or ears, rather — to help them crack it. For “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” composers Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore, everything became crystal clear when Amy Sherman-Palladino told them that the Harry Belafonte song they had to write should be a wedding toast, not a pop hit. The duo hails from the theater world, where often complete strangers help them unlock pieces.
“One of the things that we get the option of doing that’s so different from working in TV and film is that… we get to present it in front of an audience at a preview,” Mizer tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Composers panel group discussion with fellow Emmy nominees Brian Tyler (“1883”), Siddhartha Khosla (“Only Murders in the Building”), Christopher Willis (“Schmigadoon!“) and Theodore Shapiro...

Siddhartha Khosla has a hat trick of Emmy nominations this year, two of which are for “Only Murders in the Building,” for composing the addictive theme and the show’s score. For the latter category, he submitted “The Boy from 6B,” the standout Season 1 episode told from the perspective of Theo (James Caverly), who’s deaf, with no dialogue until one sentence at the end. And at one point in the process, there was going to be no music in the episode either.
“Julie Monroe, our editor was key in this. Cherien Dabis, who directed the episode — key. We all work together very early on in terms of finding what it was,” Khosla tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Composers panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “At one point, there was gonna be no music. Composer Siddhartha Khosla landed three Emmy nominations, this year, including one for original main title theme for “Only Murders in the Building.”
The catchy earworm, Khosla says, happened with ease. “I got on my piano, and just sang it over.”
The quirky, emotional tune is backed by Khosla’s humming and upside-down buckets, which are used as drums. Says Khosla, “That begins the piece, and they’re the driving momentum.”
The drummer is James McAlister, who plays with Sufjan Stevens and the National. “I called James and asked if it would be weird to put Home Depot buckets on this piece of music,” Khosla adds. “He went out and bought five buckets to create a drum set. He put microphones on top and it looked like he was a street musician.” The theme music was the perfect love letter to New York City. Barely running at under a minute, the...

After her stunning Drama Actress victory in 2020, Zendaya returns to the Emmy Awards this year with triple the number of nominations (make that quadruple when her series bid as an executive producer gets finalized). In addition to her second nomination for acting in “Euphoria,” the multitalented star also nabbed two more in the Music and Lyrics category for penning the lyrics to “I’m Tired” and “Elliot’s Song.”
She faces off against a field that includes offerings from “Schmigadoon!,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and “This Is Us.”
“Euphoria” won this race back in 2020 for “All For Us,” which was penned by Labrinth, That tune bested two compositions from “Little Fires Everywhere” by Ingrid Michaelson: “The Black Godfather” co-written by Pharrell Williams, and “Watchmen” by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Mandy Moore — along with her supportive onscreen daughter — is disappointed that This Is Us didn’t get recognized in a big way by the 2022 Emmy Awards for its final outing.
The hit NBC family drama only earned one Emmy nomination on Tuesday, in the category of best original music and lyrics for the song “The Forever Now” in the season six episode “Day Of The Wedding,” which focused on Kate Pearson’s (Chrissy Metz) second wedding to Philip (Chris Geere) and whether or not Pearson matriarch Rebecca (played by Mandy Moore), who has early-onset Alzheimer’s, would be able to perform at her daughter’s wedding. Rebecca ultimately moves them all as she plays the piano and sings the This Is Us original song in the episode.

This Is Us, NBC’s praised drama series, which previously had been Emmy-nominated four times for best drama series, received only one nomination Tuesday for its final season – for Original Music and Lyrics. Stars Mandy Moore and Chrissy Metz shared their thoughts on social media following today’s Emmy nominations announcement. Moore was considered a strong contender in the drama series acting category for her praised performance, particularly for her work in the penultimate episode.
“Do I wish our show was recognized in what I think was it’s finest hour? Sure,” Moore wrote on her Instagram story. “And Dan Fogelman’s brilliant writing for 6 seasons (hello The Train)? Ken Olin’s impeccable direction? Our insanely, wildly talented cast and crew? Yah…. But nothing can take away what our show meant to So Many (us included). That’s an incredible legacy to be a part of. I will be grateful forever.

Mandy Moore deserves her own award for her gracious reaction to the Television Academy's decision to snub "This Is Us" following its final season. The show, one of the most-watched network dramas, received zero 2022 Emmy nominations in the actor and drama series categories, propelling swarms of fans online into a rage over the lack of recognition for what Moore describes as the show's "finest hour."
"Do I wish our show was recognized in what I think was its finest hour? Sure."

Mandy Moore got candid about This Is Us' swan song being snubbed at the 2022 Emmys. Fans of the show were disappointed to see that the NBC drama—which recently wrapped up its six-season run with an emotional high—was overlooked by Emmy voters when nominations were announced on July 12. Almost completely skipping over the show and its cast members, This Is Us walked away with only one nod for "The Forever Now," an original song written by the Mandy's husband Taylor Goldsmith and composer Siddhartha Khosla. Mandy Moore let her disappointment known on social media about the shocking Emmy nominations snubs for the final season of her beloved NBC series, “This Is Us.” Moore earned some of the best reviews of her career for her performance in the final season, most notably in the series’ penultimate episode. Prosthetic makeup artists Kazu Hiro and Barrie Gower and editor Tatiana S. Riegel were among the industry heavyweights who landed Creative Arts Emmy nominations on Tuesday morning.
Two-time Oscar winner Hiro landed an Outstanding Prosthetics Emmy nomination for his transformation of Sean Penn in Starz’s “Gaslit.” Hiro often spent up to two and a half hours a day transforming Penn into Attorney General John Mitchell.

Welp, apparently the Emmys hate Westerns.
The stunning lack of nominations for the popular and acclaimed series “Yellowstone” and “1883” were far from the only surprises in Tuesday morning’s Emmy nominations announcement, of course. Between the return of Emmy juggernaut “Succession” and the lack of previous winners like “The Crown” and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” this year’s race was already primed for some unexpected nominations — and some surprising omissions.
Two shows weren’t overlooked, however: Season 3 of “Sex Education” and the inaugural season of “Heartstopper.” While both series earned wide acclaim and major buzz, Netflix elected not to submit either for Primetime Emmy consideration, given the steep competition they were respectively facing in the comedy and drama categories. Instead, “Sex Education” is being submitted for the upcoming International Emmys, and “Heartstopper” will vie for recognition in the Children’s & Family Emmys.

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Hulu, for this edition we look at how production designer Curt Beech, composer Siddhartha Khosla, and costume designer Dana Covarrubias created the world of “Only Murders in the Building.”
A huge part of the success of “Only Murders in the Building” is its ability to nail a distinct tone and world. It’s a comedy mixed with a murder mystery. It’s in some respects a throwback, but with a self-referential “let’s make a podcast” edge. It’s grounded in specific physical architecture and culture of New York City, but it’s also a self-contained story world with its own internal logic and fictional addition to the covetable real estate of the Upper West Side: the Arconia.
