The small screen adaptation of Cruel Intentions will stream on Prime Video, and details have landed for the show.
Cruel Intentions is a seminal teen film of the 1990s, planting the story of Dangerous Liasons firmly in late twentieth century youth culture, with star making turns from Selma Blair, Ryan Phillipe and Reese Witherspoon
It’s also the film that helped launch the big screen career of Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Now, Cruel Intentions is heading to the small screen in a fresh modern take (we assume). Many versions of a television adaptation have been attempted in the past, including a 2016 pilot which saw Gellar reprise her role, but ultimately none of them were commissioned.
At one stage, a television version did see the light of day, but it was released as Cruel Intentions 2, thanks to some hasty re-editing in post-production (and it didn’t share the lead cast of the film).

Lukas Gage and Zachary Quinto are keeping their clandestine meeting on the down low.
“The White Lotus” and “You” star Gage co-wrote queer sex comedy “Down Low” with Phoebe Fisher. Gage stars as a sex worker who is hired by a depressed (and repressed) divorcé to kickstart his new love life. Simon Rex, Audra McDonald, and Judith Light also star.
“Down Low” is directed by “Bonding” series creator Rightor Doyle, who also acted in the final season of “Barry.” The film debuted at 2023 SXSW.
In the film, Gary (Quinto) hires Cameron (Gage), a spirited and boundary-free sex worker to give him an erotic massage. When Cameron learns how inexperienced middle-aged Gary is, he becomes determined to deliver a crash course in unapologetic queer life. Cameron’s agenda of hookup apps and gay nomenclature quickly causes the day to take several riotously obscure turns as the pair endure a nosy, pill-popping neighbor,...

"I'm really glad I met you... even if multiple people are dead because of it." Sony Pictures has revealed an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Down Low, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Rightor Doyle. This premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival and also played at Outfest LA, with a release on VOD set for October - no theaters for this one. This almost seems like the gay male version of Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, but with a few extra twists involving dead bodies and more mayhem. "Finding yourself can get a little messy." The film is about a deeply repressed gay man, the uninhibited young man that gives him a happy ending (and teaches him some new tricks), and all the lives they ruin along the way. Starring Zachary Quinto, Lukas Gage, Simon Rex, with Audra McDonald, and Judith Light. Co-written by Phoebe Fisher and Lukas Gage.

His new deal is with Tequila Don Julio Rosado, helping promote the pink-hued spirit and the “P(arty) Time Off!” campaign. “Tequila on the rocks is my go-to,” Gage tells Variety. “I used to be a beer guy. But then it made me a little too bloated sometimes. So I think I just keep it to some good quality tequila,...

In a stately Long Island home, flanked by a coniferous forest and the sun-glinted ocean, a man prepares for a massage. He fastidiously removes his Oxfords and tucks them into a cubby. Next comes his watch, which he unfastens. It’s a marked difference from how he handles his wedding ring, a gold band he fingers before tossing in a box.
As the man — his name is Gary and he’s played by Zachary Quinto — lowers himself onto the massage table, a heavy and dramatic orchestral score plays in the background. His masseur, a spirited, blue-eyed, blonde-haired man, begins rubbing oil on his back. The tone of the scene shifts as Gary moans and groans.
So begins Down Low, a zany, frenetic and horny comedy that in trying to go there doesn’t end up anywhere. Penned by costar Lukas Gage (The White Lotus) with Phoebe Fisher, the film chronicles a feverish 24 hours for Gary,...

“Down Low,” an outrageous new comedy that premieres this week at SXSW, starts with a failed attempt at a happy ending. And things go sharply downhill from there.
The raunchy film is the brainchild of Lukas Gage, best known for being on the receiving end of Murray Bartlett’s, um, affections in “The White Lotus.” He wrote the film with Phoebe Fisher and stars as Cameron, a masseuse who is hired to get off Gary, a repressed millionaire played by Zachary Quinto. It’s an attempt at alleviating pressure that careens dangerously off the rails as Gary and Cameron destroy several lives over the course of one crazy day and night. Gage and Fisher were inspired to write the film after watching “Pretty Woman” and learning more about that rom-com’s original script, which was titled “3,000” and told a far darker tale about sex workers.
“We had an idea — what if we made it queer?...

Let’s get something out of the way. There’s a scene in the just-released season four of Netflix’s You in which Lukas Gage, he of the pivotal salad-tossing scene in The White Lotus, receives a golden shower. The moment isn’t quite as climactic as what we saw from Gage and Murray Bartlett, but it’s something the actor knows people will be talking about, especially since it comes as part of his most high-profile post-Lotus role yet. “I did not know that I was going to get peed on in You when I took the part,” he says with a laugh. “I’m not, like, asking my agents to send me only roles where I’m half naked.”
In You, Gage plays a haughty London trust-funder who becomes a nemesis of Penn Badgley’s Joe Goldberg. Next month, he’ll premiere Down Low — a dark comedy he...

The Cruel Intentions TV series never made it to NBC, and for that, its star Sarah Michelle Gellar is “grateful.”
The network initially ordered a pilot for the potential adaptation in February 2016, before ultimately opting against greenlighting the project in October of that same year. Now, in an interview with The New York Times, Gellar (who played devious step-sister Kathryn Merteuil in the 1999 movie and its unaired pilot) stated that the network and concept were simply not a good fit.

Cruel Intentions might get its time to shine on the small screen after all.
Almost five years after NBC shelved its planned sequel series, it has been announced that a new take on the original movie is in the works at IMDb TV.
The new iteration would come from writers Phoebe Fisher and Sarah Goodman.
It revolves around two step-siblings who will do anything to stay on top.
In this iteration, they want to stay on top of the Greek life hierarchy at an elite Washington, D.C. college.
After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Panhellenic system, they’ll do whatever’s necessary to preserve their power and reputations — even seduce the daughter of the vice president of the United States.
Neal Moritz, a producer on the original movie, is also set to work on the project.

Another attempt at a “Cruel Intentions” TV series is in development at IMDb TV.
Inspired by the 1999 film of the same name — which was itself inspired by the novel “Dangerous Liaisons” — the new iteration of the series follows two ruthless step siblings who will do anything to stay on top. In this case, of the Greek life hierarchy at an elite Washington, D.C. college. After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Panhellenic system, they’ll do whatever’s necessary to preserve their power and reputations, even seduce the daughter of the Vice President of the United States.
NBC had previously ordered a pilot for a followup to the film back in 2016, with one of the film’s original stars — Sarah Michelle Gellar — returning in the role of Kathryn Merteuil. It was ultimately not picked up to series. Prior to that, Fox attempted to mount a prequel series that...
