Keynote speaker John Zeng delivers five-point plan for foreign fare; highlights growth in second and third-tier cities.
International filmmakers must champion action films with strong visual effects and pick releases dates carefully if they are to succeed in China’s increasingly competitive distribution landscape, top Chinese executive John Zeng told Las Vegas attendees on Monday.
Outlining the final points in his five-point roadmap to success, Zeng urged content creators to invest in digital and social media campaigns, secure exhibitor support for marketing innovations, and establish alliances with powerful local partners.
In a wide-ranging keynote address at the start of CinemaCon’s International Day that tellingly did not address the quota system, the senior vice-president of Wanda Cultural Industry Group, president and board director of Wanda Cinemas, and board director of AMC Theatres touched on several overall trends.
“The trend of consolidation will be unstoppable,” he said, adding that film-going has become a regular habit in China, online...

President of Fox International addresses challenges, notes theatrical box office “continues to drive the train.”
Andrew Cripps delivered a positive forecast for the theatrical business in keeping with the traditional tone of CinemaCon’s Monday opening keynote, while urging greater collaboration between distributors and theatre owners.
“Audiences are changing and they’re harder to connect with through traditional means. Films are more expensive than ever… marketing costs only seem to go in one direction – up,” the President of Fox International said, adding that piracy and the growing proliferation of entertainment choices presented challenges.
The executive said he expected consolidation to continue, highlighted the need to offer enhanced theatre-going experiences, and urged the industry to grapple with and share data.
“If we can collaborate… to improve the customer engagement, then that has to be a good thing,” Cripps told attendees at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Fox International Productions president Tomas Jegeus on Monday identified the potential of local-language hits to succeed beyond their native borders in a broad presentation in Las Vegas.
Seven months after the former co-president of worldwide theatrical marketing and distribution filled the role vacated by Sanford Panitch, Jegeus spoke confidently about global production hubs and the complementary interplay between local and Hollywood releases.
“Local-language films are not confined to local borders,” said Jegeus during his seminar at Caesars Palace. “It doesn’t happen often but there’s great potential for these films to break out.”
One shining example was French smash The Intouchables, which grossed more than $400m worldwide and took 51% of that revenue outside France. The 2012 comedy remains the highest grossing French film outside its home country.
Jegeus noted that recent Fox Star release P.K. took 32% of its global haul outside India, where it grossed around $76m.

Update: Alejandro Ramirez Magaña struck an early blow for the theatrical lobby at the annual exhibitors convention on Monday when his comments on the controversial Screening Room proposal drew spontaneous applause.
The Mexican CEO and general director of Cinepolis (pictured) wasted little time making his thoughts known in the week that Prem Akkaraju, Napster co-founder Sean Parker’s business partner on the disruptive day-and-date distribution proposal, was reportedly heading to Las Vegas to introduce the model to select theatre owners in a series of discreet meetings.
The subject resurfaced in panels on the experience economy and collaboration between distribution and exhibition, and again during an on-stage conversation with award recipient and veteran producer Frank Marshall.
“We think that instead of experimenting on how to shorten the theatrical window we should work together to strengthen it and there are many ways to do that,” said Magaña in his keynote address during the International Day Breakfast at Caesars Palace...

The streaming giant is in negotiations to acquire The Other Side Of The Wind, veteran producer Frank Marshall told convention attendees on Monday.
Marshall made the remark during an on-stage interview in Las Vegas after he collected the International Filmmaker Of The Decade accolade at the International Day awards lunch.
Netflix would be the ideal home for Welles’ unfinished film, said the producer, who hoped it would debut by the end of the year.
He reminded attendees The Other Side Of The Wind stars John Huston as a director on the last night of his life as seen through the eyes of the paparazzi. The film shot between 1970 and 1976. Welles died in 1985.
Marshall weighed in on the Screening Room debate and reminisced about a career that has seen him rack up credits for the Indiana Jones and Jason Bourne franchises, Poltergeist, Jurassic World and the upcoming The Bfg, Jason Bourne, Assassin’s Creed...

"I don't want him to grow up!" she exclaims, hugging Carson's currently baby-sized head. "He's so cute!" It's not just love for her brother. Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore have been Bff for years; besides starring together in the Charlie's Angels movie franchise, the two have talked each other up endlessly in interviews and Cameron was even the maid of honor in Drew's 2012 wedding to Will Kopelman. It comes as no surprise, then, that Cameron would have such a strong reaction to a radio host's comment about Drew and her history of drug abuse. During Kiis 106.5's Kyle and Jackie O Show on Monday, Cameron talked up her new movie Sex Tape but abruptly ended the conversation after being asked about Drew's past scandals as well as Cameron's budding relationship with Benji Madden. The Australian hosts mused that Giselle Eisenberg, the little girl who plays Cameron's daughter in the movie, reminded them of a young Drew in 1982's E.T., to which Cameron replied, "Aw, yeah! She does, now that you mention it. And she's...

Filmmakers Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the duo behind critically reviled spoofs like "Date Movie," "Epic Movie," "The Starving Games," "Meet The Spartans" and "Vampires Suck," have setup their next project.
The pair will co-write and direct "Who The F#@k Took My Daughter," this spoof aiming mostly at the Liam Neeson-led "Taken" film series.
In the spoof, Ryan Miller is a tough, no nonsense, black leather jacket-wearing type whose daughter is kidnapped. He sets out to hunt down the abductors and rescue her. Peter Safran will produce.
The pair's previous films have grossed a total of $350 million in worldwide box office thus far, though their two most recent films - "The Starving Games" and "Best Night Ever" - were bombs which only made a few million each.

Like any professional hockey player, Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller is used to hearing the Canadian national anthem played before most NHL games. But, like every member of the United States men's hockey team who played at the last Olympics, Miller hasn't entirely gotten over hearing "O Canada" after the gold-medal game.

Kings of Summer, a film directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts that won much critical acclaim at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, is about three teenagers who decide to live off the land and build a house in the middle of the woods. The soundtrack for the movie is set for release on May 28, and features a melody composed by Guster’s Ryan Miller along with hip-top tracks by Kevin Writer and Douglas James. Vogt-Roberts and Miller modeled the melody after the 8-bit esque melodies of Koji Kondo, which provided the music for classic Nintendo video games like Zelda and Donkey Kong....
