“Sentinel,” by Hollywood legend Phil Tippett, and “Sister Inconnue,” the first solo directorial outing of Rkss’ Anouk Whissell, cold well be two highlights at a 2024 Cannes Frontières Platform that looks set to underscore the robust range of genre as it is embraced by Hollywood, big independents, horror devotees and auteurs alike.
Creator of creatures for “Star Wars” and “Jurassic Park,” Tippett may have terrified more people than anybody alive. If a teaser is anything to go by, “Sentinel,” a project, may well pick up on the style of 2021’s experimental and nightmarish stop motion/animation “Mad God.”
“Sentinel” features a battleground reminiscent of WWI hellish horror, giant bugs echoing “Starship Troopers,” Tippett’s last big job, attack droids and the statuesque figures of Osiris, Horus and Anubis, the last of which saves the hero, the gas-masked Sentinel, from a gruesome battlefield.
Sure to be a huge draw, an expanded version...

Fresh from Panic Fest 2024, The Ceremony is About to Begin unwraps itself like a meticulously preserved mummy, serving up a fresh twist on the horror mockumentary scene. Directed by Sean Nichols Lynch, this found footage film cleverly marries the allure of ancient Egyptian rituals with the chilling uncertainty of cult dynamics, all captured through a ‘documentary’ lens.

From the outset, Lynch sets the tone with a series of eerie, documentary-style interviews featuring ex-cult members that echo the polished yet ominous feel of a Netflix or HBO true-crime special. These initial snippets offer a glimpse into the enigmatic and unsettling past of the cult, setting a solid foundation for horror fans to cling to. International audiences fell in love with the handsome “Rick O’Connell and the sharp librarian Evelyn” and the Mummy’s ghost in the action-adventure movie The Mummy from 1999, which served as the first series of films.
The unusual duo fights against the undead Egyptian high priest Imhotep as he pursues his campaign to exterminate humanity in Stephen Sommers’ adaptation of the 1932 classic creature film.
It was combating the supernatural powers and terrifying plagues that unleash upon the land. This is entirely different from the 1930s and 1940s Universal horror films and Hammer horror films.
The Sommers mummy’s curse brilliantly incorporates humor, amazing effects, and exciting action sequences into the gripping Egyptian story, shifting their focus away from being short horror movies and toward adventure and romance.

“With the Strength of Ra!” For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit “Mummies Alive!“, an animated series for kids that aired in syndication back in 1997.
It’s hard to put a finger on why “Mummies Alive!” never really clicked with audiences. Sure, now it’s considered a cult classic and is mostly adored by horror geeks and nostalgia buffs, but back in 1997 “Mummies Alive!” arrived with a roar, and landed with a splat. I blame the lack of success on bad timing. I peg it mainly on the arrival of the 4Kids brand, as by the middle of 1997, 4Kids Anime had made its explosive debut in America with “Pokemon.” Once 4Kids introduced networks to licensed content that brought in big ratings, suddenly the conventional Saturday morning cartoon was dead.
Kids were just more interested in pocket monsters than undead monsters. It seemed to happen almost overnight, and...

“Black Adam” is here and, at least according to actor Dwayne Johnson, he’s ready to upend the hierarchy of the DC Universe.
A spin-off of sorts from DC’s earlier “Shazam!”, “Black Adam” follows Johnson’s Teth-Adam, a demigod that had been imprisoned for 5,000 years and has now been unleashed in the turbulent, fictionalized North African nation of Kahndaq (instead of Egypt).
Kahndaq is a nation overruled by a mass of warlords known as “intergang,” meaning that Teth-Adam has a lot of cleaning up to do. (And this is before one of the intergang warlords zeroes in on a mystical crown that can turn him into the literal devil.) Teth-Adam learns to be a little more human thanks to his interactions with some local freedom fighters and comes to an understanding with the Justice Society (led by Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman), standing in for the larger DC Universe.

Dwayne Johnson has been very busy promoting his pair of DC superhero blockbusters “DC League of Super-Pets” and “Black Adam,” so it was probably inevitable that the two films would cross paths. And The Rock shared that special moment with his fans on social media.
On Sunday, Johnson released the post-credits scene from “DC League of Super-Pets” on social media (which you can watch below), in which Superman and Krypto meet Black Adam and his own super-pet, Anubis. And yes, Johnson voices Krypto, Black Adam, and Anubis in this scene, with the jackal explaining that his owner is an antihero.
“It’s basically like a hero, except way cooler,” Anubis says. “You make your own rules and then you break ‘em. Also, you can ignore most moral and ethical conventions because no one can stop you.”
“That sounds like a villain,” deadpans Krypto.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is done with teasing. He jumped into the social media universe Saturday with a full post-credit scene from the animated DC’s League of Super-Pets.
The social media-posted scene features Johnson as multiple characters – he provides the voice of Superman’s dog, Krypto, but also voices Black Adam and Black Adam’s dog, Anubis.
Johnson copped to the multiple roles in his caption.
“The world is starting to simmer with excitement about the earths shattering Superman vs Black Adam⚡️showdown one day,” Johnson wrote.”But until then… Black Adam’S Dog ~ Anubis⚡️ has a few choice words for Superman’S Dog ~ Krypto. The definition and philosophy of Antihero is quite intriguing….And Yes…. If you listen closely, I voice Both Dogs And Black Adam in this scene.”
The post already has more than a half-million likes.

Universal might have tried their hardest to make the Dark Universe a thing, but audiences simply weren’t interested in the idea of the studio’s stable of classic monsters headlining action-packed blockbusters. The plans were certainly ambitious, but also hugely flawed, with the likes of Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Javier Bardem, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie all lined up before the would-be franchise imploded at the first hurdle.
Cruise might be one of the biggest movie stars in history, but even he couldn’t save The Mummy from disaster. Not only was it terrible, but fans weren’t able to look past the idea of any big budget effort focusing on the Egyptian undead that didn’t feature Brendan Fraser. Indeed, viewers of a certain generation hold Fraser’s Mummy trilogy very close to their hearts, with the actor’s dashing and charismatic Rick O’Connell shooting him to stardom...

A spin-off from 2001′s Mummy sequel, the Scorpion King series – begun in 2002 – has official now out-lived and outlasted the very franchise it was born from. Stephen Sommers Mummy films ran for 9 years and three films, whilst the Scorpion King franchise is now in it’s fifth film with Scorpion King: Book of Souls and has go on for 16 years – with four sequels in the the last ten years alone.
This latest comes once again from Universal 1440, the direct to market arm of Universal which has consistently put out direct to DVD sequels to a myriad of different franchises like Death Race, Bring It On, Jarhead, Tremors and more. Be patient, American Gods Season 2 is arriving sometime soon, with some fresh faces behind the scenes and in front of the camera.
American Gods Season 2 has begun production! Sadly, showrunners Fuller and Green won't be back for American Gods Season 2. Gillian Anderson has also bowed out as Media, with Kristen Chenoweth (Easter) also considering not returning without Fuller and Green.
Instead, Jesse Alexander will share showrunning duties with American Gods creator, Neil Gaiman. Alexander may be familiar to Bryan Fuller fans, having worked on both Hannibal and Star Trek: Discovery.
As if that wasn't enough, the ongoing showrunner scrambles has claimed a casualty in Fuller and Green's replacement, Jesse Alexander, leading to further delays.
This is good news both for fans of the book and fans of good TV. The first season of American Gods only made it through about a third of the book, which means...

To celebrate the October 16th release of the horror anthology Tales of Halloween, Daily Dead spoke to the filmmakers behind the movie to discuss the project, their individual contributions and more.
First up is Axelle Carolyn, the writer and director of 2013’s Soulmate, who first spearheaded the anthology and whose creepy, atmospheric segment “Grimm Grinning Ghost” stars Alex Essoe (Starry Eyes) as a young woman confronted by an urban legend in which she does not believe.
As one of the masterminds behind Tales of Halloween, can you give some background on how the project came together?
Axelle Carolyn: I’ve been friends with these guys for the best part of ten years, and had been thinking for a while that it'd be great to work on something together. There's an awesome horror community in L.A., and we all hang together to talk horror, watch horror, eat, breathe and live horror.
