Enough of this “fun” junk. Who even does that? Games are growing up, and it’s time to kick fun to the curb.
Ubisoft’s Jill Murray and Hugo Giard were hardly that harsh in their talk at Gdc just recently, but I certainty wouldn’t blame anyone who took their words that way. Even so, most mediums mature over time, and it’s hard to argue their main point: fun is no longer the only thing to aim for.
The talk’s focus was on the development of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – Freedom Cry, and in comparing it to films like 12 Years a Slave and Leaving Las Vegas, it was made clear that Ubisoft’s Quebec team took the subject matter ultra-seriously. Slavery is a heavy topic, so it makes sense that fun would fall by the wayside, even if only a little.

Downloadable content for Ubisoft’s open-world duo, Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, will remain exclusive to PlayStation 4 for six months, Sony has revealed. This platform-exclusive caveat, which was initially revealed by Shack News, can be spotted in a new promotional video for the company’s next-gen hardware around the 01:25 mark.
This timed exclusivity was originally revealed during Ubisoft’s press conference at Gamescom. For Watch Dogs, the added gameplay will include a unique costume for Aiden Pearce, four missions and an in-game perk that boasts hacking. In terms of the company’s swashbuckling adventure, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is also set to contain additional story-related content centred on Aveline, the female protagonist from Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation. In fact, the added content has been billed as an hour-long short story; one that will feature an older version of Aveline from the mind of Jill Murray,...

The PlayStation 3 and 4 versions of "Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag" will be privy to a clutch of exclusive missions featuring Aveline de Grandpré, the mixed-race heroine of "Assassin's Creed III: Liberation," according to publisher Ubisoft.
According to game director Ashraf Ismail, the Sony-exclusive deal will feature three different missions totaling about an hour of extra content, and "Liberation" writer Jill Murray has reprised her role to flesh out Aveline's story.
"It's a ways forward, so Aveline is a bit older," says "Black Flag" writer Darby McDevitt. "It's not directly related to the end of her story. If 'Assassin’s Creed IV' is like a novel, Aveline’s missions are like a short story.”
That said, I wouldn't expect Aveline and "Black Flag"'s Edward Kennway to cross paths: "Liberation" takes place two generations or so after "Black Flag," and these new missions are even later. At first blush,...

At E3, Sony announced that their close partnership with Ubisoft would result in exclusive Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag content for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 owners. And today, the illustrious publisher released details on the latter, which will contain around an hour of extra gameplay material orbiting around Aveline de Grandpré; the central character in the PlayStation Vita rendition, Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation.
Taking place over three supplementary missions, this particular story arc will follow an older version of Aveline and will be penned by Jill Murray – the lead writer behind Liberation. In order to explain how each of these parallel narratives will come together, Darby McDevitt; the chief scribe for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, took to Ubisoft’s official blog to explain.
“It’s a ways forward so Aveline is a bit older. It’s not directly related to the end of her story.
