Male groups have been on a roll in the Grammys race for Best New Artist, winning the last three years in a row – Bon Iver (2011), Fun. (2012), and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis (2013) – but solo men haven't fared as well. In fact only one such artist has won in the last 22 years: John Legend in 2005. 22 years is as long as British crooner Sam Smith has been alive, so while he'd normally be an underdog, he has one crucial advantage that could make him hard to beat. -Break- Will Beyonce finally add Album of the Year to her massive Grammys collection? Smith is only the 10th artist nominated in all four general-field categories in the same year: Best New Artist and Record, Album, and Song of the Year. The previous nine were: 1967 – Bobbie Gentry 1979 – Christopher Cross 1984 – Cyndi Lauper 1988 – Tracy Chapman 1990 – Mariah Carey 1997 – Paula Cole 2001 – Indie.Arie 2007 – Amy Winehouse 2...

Sunday marks the return of HBO's The Newsroom, a series that isn't exactly known for being subtle—especially in its first season, which featured a memorable scene set to Coldplay's "Fix You." Anvilicious? Oh yeah. Emotionally manipulative? You betcha. Surprisingly effective all the same? Unfortunately, yes, according to EW.com's Lanford Beard. Which is how we came upon this week's PopWatch Confessional question: What's the song that's had a surprising, embarrassing emotional effect on you? Lanford Beard, staff editor: Between all its walk-and-talks, Network rip-offs, and "women be klutzy" gags, The Newsroom's first season actually took on a few actual news events,...

The Grammys! They’re this coming Sunday and I almost forgot! To celebrate, here are all 55 winners of the Record of the Year Grammy ranked for your consideration. Now beat it.
55. “Don’t Worry Be Happy,” Bobby McFerrin
Finger-snapping never sounded so un-snappy.
54. “Rosanna,” Toto
You know, a Grammy windfall was bound to happen one of those exactly 1982 bands (Air Supply, Foreigner, Reo Speedwagon, etc), and Toto was the big winner. “Rosanna” is fun, but Grammy-worthy?
53. “Sunny Came Home,” Shawn Colvin
You know, a Grammy windfall was bound to happen to one of those exactly 1998 female singer-songwriters (Meredith Brooks, Natalie Imbruglia, Paula Cole, etc.), and Shawn Colvin was the big winner. “Sunny Came Home” is contemplative, but Grammy-worthy?
52. “Change the World,” Eric Clapton
Sort of annoying when a legendary artist wins for his most palatable and forgettable material. “Change the World” is merely radio-friendly, not an artistic breakthrough.

She is one of only of eight artists to be nominated for the top four categories in the General Field and win Best New Artist. The others are Bobbi Gentry (1967), Christopher Cross (1980), Tracy Chapman (1988), Mariah Carey (1990), Paula Cole (1997), Amy Winehouse (2007), and Fun. (2012). Lauper has received 14 nominations in various genres fields ranging from Pop to Rock to Dance to Blues to Arranging. New Girl is back, y’all. No disrespect to last week’s premiere, but tonight felt like the level of hilarity, heartstring-pulling, and sharp storytelling that spoiled us last season. To wit, Jess and Nick once more earned their couplehood, from the minute he spit-smoothed her bangs to his final words to her (“I would have noticed you”); the mean girls — and boy — on the sidelines reaffirmed why we loved the loftmates so much; Schmidt was up to his usual douchebag jar-worthy antics… but almost redemptively guilty about his behavior, and Winston got the chance to play with an adorable kitteh.
