This is a week where the Super Bowl takes place (on February 11) and a new series about Christian Dior’s post-World War II fashion movement (“The New Look”) also premieres. The bounty of television keeps giving. Also this week: the streaming premiere of “Bottoms,” the end of “La Brea,” a new documentary about Black astronauts (“The Space Race”) and the return of Jon Stewart to “The Daily Show.” Plus so much more! Sounds like it’ll kind of be a momentous week, huh?

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for La Brea, Season 2, Episodes 13 & 14, “The Journey, Part 1” and “The Journey, Part 2.”] La Brea predictably ended its second season, presenting viewers with another cliffhanger conclusion that will surely leave them eager for the previously announced third season. While no premiere date has been set for the upcoming chapter, plenty of questions were posed in the two-part ending, which separated the Harris family once again by time and space. As some version of Gavin’s (Eoin Macken) vision of Eve’s (Natalie Zea) demise came to pass, she didn’t wind up dying under the red-flowered tree from his dream. Instead, she was sucked into a malfunctioning portal to an unknown time. (Credit: Sarah Enticknap/NBC) Worse still, several other portals to other times opened in the sky over 10,000 B.C. and dumped into it unknown beings, one of which is supposedly a T-Rex. Once again, it seems like the show is...

NBC’s La Brea wraps up season two with episode 14 which begins with Gavin at death’s door. Episode 13 ended with Gavin (Eoin Macken) and his group discovering Moore’s backup portal just as a gigantic lizard attacked. Gavin was thrown aside and landed on a stalagmite that pierced his abdomen. (Ouch.) The good thing about this is that it won’t be Gavin making the plan on how to get out of this situation. I have no idea why people continue to listen to him!
It’s determined they can’t lift Gavin off the rock or he’ll bleed out.
Judah (Damien Fotiou) hears something and Sam (Jon Seda) and Josh (Jack Martin) check it out. It turns out James (Jonno Roberts) knows about this portal, and he’s...

NBC’s La Brea season two episode 12 ended with Levi (Nicholas Gonzalez) blowing up the tower. Episode 13, “The Journey Part 1,” confirms the building’s been destroyed but, miraculously, everyone escaped. Only Levi was slightly injured.
Back at the camp, everyone’s dealing with the fact their only way home is gone. Ty’s returned to the fort and Paara, and a bloody nose indicates his cancer’s progressing.
Sam (Jon Seda) holds a community meeting and announces that since they are there for the duration, they need to form a government. Lucas (Josh McKenzie) tosses his hat into the ring – as does Sam – and Judah appoints himself election commissioner.
Gavin (Eoin Macken) is in a surprisingly good mood, considering the circumstances. He’s decided to focus on Eve and the kids.

NBC’s La Brea season two episode 11 is titled “The Wedding” but there’s a lot more going on besides the exchange of I Dos. Episode 11 opens with Caroline (Melissa Neal) and her dad, Silas, going over Dr. Moore’s notes, hoping they’ll lead to a solution on how to send Gavin and his family home. They’re not making any progress and are worried Gavin will turn to James for help. Silas (Mark Lee) regrets that he failed to protect Gavin from James all those years ago and dedicates himself to working on Moore’s notes.
He sends Caroline back to the camp to watch over her son. Seconds after she walks away, Silas is shot. The shooter picks up the now blood-spattered notes and leaves without showing their face.

Eve (Natalie Zea) shows up inside the Tower and wants to know why the virus stopped uploading.

Before jumping into a recap of NBC’s La Brea season two episode eight, let’s take a quick look back at the winter finale. Episode seven found the Velez and Harris families faced with the horrible choice of staying in the ‘80s or returning to 10,000 BC. Gavin’s mom, Caroline, has possession of a virus that will destroy James’s portal, but in order for it to work she needs Gavin. Only James or Gavin’s handprint will unlock the system that will allow her to upload the virus.
Levi opted to stay in 1988 while the Harris and Velez families decided to stick together and take the leap back into primeval times. As they’re about to jump into the sinkhole – once again without any supplies – Gavin has a...

Some shows do cliffhangers; La Brea does cliff jumpers! In the NBC series’ November-airing winter finale, the reunited Eve and Gavin Harris (Natalie Zea and Eoin Macken) leaped into a sinkhole from 1988 back to 10,000 B.C. with their kids (Jack Martin and Zyra Gorecki). In January 31’s two-part return, “they land and are off to the races,” says exec producer and showrunner David Appelbaum, trying to shut down the time portal (long story). (Credit: Sarah Enticknap/NBC) “We only shot that scene 17 times,” the always hilarious Zea jokes to TV Insider. “It’s funny, people are like, ‘What happens?’ and I’m like, ‘Well, what have you seen?’ Because we shot so many different versions of that.” They have also filmed another major moment, which plays out in this week’s back-to-back episodes. Appelbaum reveals that the survivors at the clearing have their own prehistoric predicament: “[They’re] in the middle of a migration path.

When we meet fertility doctor Sarah Gregory she’s well put together, professional, and leading a neat and tidy life. By the time we say goodbye to Sarah, everything’s gotten messy and her grip on reality has been pried loose. What transpires that forces this decay in her mental state is alternatingly terrifying and disappointingly predictable in Run Rabbit Run.
Succession’s Sarah Snook stars as Sarah, mom to Mia and ex-wife of Pete. Sarah’s raising Mia and doing a terrific job of it until the day of Mia’s seventh birthday. The first hint of something unusual comes when Mia announces that she misses people she’s never met all the time. Sarah finds that quirky but brushes it off, unaware that statement’s about to play an integral role in what happens next.

The fearless wagon hijackers are right outside the huge tower as NBC’s La Brea season two episode six begins. Dressed like Exiles, they approach the guard shack with their wagon load of rocks as Levi, Scott, and Lucas watch from a nearby hiding spot.
The guard doesn’t recognize Gavin (Eoin Macken) and wonders where the normal guy is, and Gavin attempts to talk his way through the situation. Fortunately, he’s better at that than he is at planning things.
Unbeknownst to our heroes, they’re being closely monitored from inside the building. And, unfortunately, Silas (Mark Lee) is lurking nearby too, which sets off the spidey senses of people in the building.
Orders are issued to arrest everyone on the wagon.

NBC’s La Brea season two episode two begins with Eve and Levi holding hands while stuck in a cage on the way to wherever their captors call home. They arrive at the camp and are forced to work as slaves alongside others who’ve also been abducted by this well-armed tribe.
Their leader tells Eve (Natalie Zea) and Levi (Nicholas Gonzalez) they need to dig for a specific black rock. Once found, they need to alert a guard and then keep digging.
Eve and Levi ask one of their fellow captives where he’s from. It turns out his name’s Virgil and he also fell through the La Brea Tar Pit sinkhole.

Season one of NBC’s La Brea ended with Josh and Riley accidentally stepping through a portal to 1988. Meanwhile, Gavin, Izzy, and Ella deliberately stepped into a sinkhole in hopes of reuniting with Eve and Josh (in Gavin and Izzy’s case) and Veronica (in Ella’s). They landed on a beach next to a woolly mammoth, confirming they were definitely not in 2022 anymore. A strange tower that will somehow play an important role in season two was teased as the first season wrapped up.
Season two episode one, “The Next Day,” starts with families enjoying a day in Hollywood Lake Park, nestled below the famous Hollywood sign. A young girl has the worst timing ever when she takes her fluffy four-legged family member for a walk just as...

Theresa Palmer and Max Riemelt in Berlin Syndrome - a passionate holiday romance takes an unexpected and sinister turn when an Australian photographer wakes one morning in a Berlin apartment and is unable to leave. Photo: Sarah Enticknap The gender imbalance in the film industry is a global phenomenon, so periodically we like to shine our spotlight specifically on female directors. This week, we're turning our attention to Australia, where according to the latest statistics, of 'active fiction feature filmmakers' between 2013 and 2018, just 17 per cent had a female director, although they fared slightly better in documentaries, where they represented 38 per cent of the total figure. Indigenous representation was also poor, with just 14 fiction features between 2000 and 2019 having indigenous directors - and though the gender breakdown of that is not, so far as I can tell, available, it is likely that women indigenous directors fare worst of all in terms of numbers.

Marta Dusseldorp in ‘Wentworth’ (Photo credit: Sarah Enticknap).
In a world away from A Place to Call Home, Marta Dusseldorp has donned the prison track suit with a guest role in Foxtel’s Wentworth, which resumes shooting this week.
Her character Sheila Bausch, a senior figure in the True Path cult, is on remand, charged with the murder of nine people at the cult’s retreat.
Described as highly intelligent, charismatic and manipulative, Sheila worked as the personal secretary for True Path’s founder Dr Mendel (Brian Vriends).
The Fremantle production re-starts after shutting down on March 23, just before a planned hiatus. The show has the advantage of being shot in its own large building in Melbourne, which has the flexibility of moving scenes set in a small cell to a bigger cell.
Executive producer Jo Porter, who is Fremantle’s director of scripted, said: “We have carefully adjusted our...
