At the end of Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s 1988 one-shot Batman: The Killing Joke, the Joker lays out his worldview in plain terms. After testing his theory that “one bad day” could make even the most decent person into a madman like himself, the Joker tells his nemesis, “It’s all a joke! Everything anybody ever valued or struggled for… it’s all a monstrous, demented gag!”
Even more than the grisly sights of The Killing Joke—in which the Clown Prince of Crime sets out to prove his theory by brutalizing Batgirl Barbara Gordon and tormenting her father Commissioner Gordon—that line has set the course of Joker stories of the past several decades. Fans and creators alike try to push the Joker to edgier extremes, forgetting how Batman answers when his nemesis asks why he isn’t laughing. “Because I’ve heard it before,” he responds. “And...

Tim Burton's "Batman Returns" is one of the more unusual blockbusters of its era. Following the massive, massive success of his 1989 "Batman," Burton was seemingly given a lot more creative leeway with his sequel, transforming the world of Batman into a noir carnival nightmare of hopelessness and kink. "Returns" saw the Dark Knight (Michael Keaton) facing off against the sewer-dwelling creep the Penguin (Danny DeVito) and beginning an unhealthy flirtation with the mentally unwell Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer).
Burton's rendition of Catwoman may be the best Batman villain to have been depicted in live-action. She was unbalanced and terrifying, using her newfound mindset as a tool for liberation. It's no coincidence that her costume is a skintight leather vinyl costume with a corset and a whip. This was Catwoman as a horror movie dominatrix. She had more in common with the Cenobites from "Hellraiser" than anything from a Batman comic book.

Tim Burton wanted to make ‘Batman Returns’ an $18 million black-and-white version of 1942’s ‘Cat People’. The ‘Batman’ director ended up producing a movie featuring Michelle Pfeiffer as Selina Kyle, who becomes Catwoman, and Michael Keaton returning as the caped crusader. But its screenwriter Daniel Waters told Variety about the torturous process of making the 1992 movie: “(Tim) wanted to do an $18 million black-and-white movie, like the original ‘Cat People,’ of Selina just low-key living in a small town. “And I wanted to make a ‘Batman’ movie where the metaphor was about Batman. “So I had (Selina) move to a Los Angeles version of Gotham City, and it’s run by three asshole superheroes. “It was ‘The Boys’ before ‘The Boys.’ But he got exhausted reading my script.” Indie Wire has reported Daniel’s idea for ‘Batman Returns’ was to also satirise the franchise built around the vigilante. It was reportedly originally...

[This interview contains major spoilers for Merry Little Batman.]
DC Studios’ Merry Little Batman sees Bruce Wayne in an unusual turn: donning his dad hat during the holidays.
The Warner Bros. Animation film follows the relationship of Bruce and his son, Damian, an 8-year-old desperate to be just like his crime-fighting father. The only problem — beyond him being a literal child — is that crime no longer exists in Gotham. Batman decided to clean up the streets for good to give Damian a shot at the safe, crime-free childhood Bruce didn’t have.
But when his overprotective father is called to save the day in Nova Scotia on Christmas Eve and becomes stranded in a trap laid by Mr. Freeze, Damian is left home alone with no one to help him as two criminals break in. The hapless burglars manage to make off with his newly gifted utility belt, leading Damian on a chase through Gotham’s...

Quick, name a superhero with a more cynical perspective than Batman. Okay, sure there’s Spawn, but I meant in mainstream comics. Yeah, Punisher, but how about in DC Comics? Sure, there’s John Constantine. But I mean a character less suitable for Christmas stories. What’s that you say? Constantine once crushed the bones of St. Nicolas and snorted them into a powder? And Lobo murdered Santa?
Okay, the point is that Batman doesn’t seem like the type of guy who would make for a good Christmas story. Spider-Man can deliver presents while swinging across New York City and Superman has carried Santa’s slay more than once, but Mr. Vengeance doesn’t even like leaving Gotham. Why would he bother with the North Pole?
And yet, Batman has been at the center of several Christmas stories over the year, and some of them are pretty great. Here...

Matt Reeves 2022’s The Batman hit theatres in March 2022, starring Robert Pattinson as a young Bruce Wayne and Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle, a.k.a Catwoman. This movie was different from other Batman films because it is more focused on the winged crusaders’ early days as an investigator first and vigilante second as her fought villains like The Penguin and The Riddler. That doesn’t mean Batman doesn’t pack a punch in several action-filled scenes in the film. The neo-noir theme worked well with Pattinson’s brooding character, creating a more comic book film that thrilled fans. Shortly after the success of...

Robert Butler, the Emmy-winning, go-to pilot director who helmed the first episodes of such acclaimed shows as Batman, Star Trek, Hill Street Blues and Moonlighting, died Nov. 3 in Los Angeles, his family announced. He was 95.
Butler also co-created the Pierce Brosnan-starring Remington Steele (and helmed its pilot, of course), directed the first episode of Hogan’s Heroes in 1965, and called the first shots and set the tone for, Glenn Gordon Caron’s Moonlighting, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Sisters and The Division.
In 1973, he directed the William Holden-starring The Blue Knight — the first four-hour television miniseries — at NBC and then got the CBS series adaptation of the Joseph Wambaugh novel that starred George Kennedy off on the right foot.
Butler also helmed two episodes of The Twilight Zone (the fifth-season installments “Caesar and Me,” starring his old friend, Jackie Cooper, and “The Encounter”) and worked on The Dick Van Dyke Show,...

Can it really be 20 years since “The O.C.” premiered on Fox? The young actors of the series, Benjamin McKenzie, Adam Brody, Mischa Barton and Rachel Bilson quickly became in-demand stars and the theme song “California” by Phantom Planet became a top ten hit in several countries while also reaching 35 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart.
The bagel-centric series also introduced us to “Chrismukkah” and showcased bands from The Killers to Modest Mouse.
Several members of the cast went on to lead their own series and films and others have popped up on hit shows from “How I Met Your Mother” to “Grey’s Anatomy.” Here’s what they’ve been up to since “The O.C.” signed off in February 2007.

Those of us that were alive in 1989 can attest that Batmania had taken over. Warner Brothers’ marketing machine was working overtime to make sure that the bat symbol was everywhere. It’s no wonder that when the film came out, it was a giant hit grossing over $400 million dollars. Adjusted to 2023 rates, that is just over $1 billion dollars. When it came time for a sequel, the team got back together again and put out another home run although it would bring in a little bit less at the box office.
That was okay though as this time Warner Brothers had prepared to push the movie with all sorts of merchandise. Just about any type of clothing you could think of had a bat symbol on it. When it came time to make a third film, that’s when it all seemed to fall apart. Tim Burton had a...

Tim Burton will never forget Paul Reubens. Burton has shared a tribute to Reubens, who starred in and co-wrote Burton’s feature directorial debut Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, following Reuben’s death Sunday following a years-long battle with cancer at age 70.
“Shocked and saddened,” Burton wrote in a post on Instagram alongside a photo of the two on the set of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. “I’ll never forget how Paul helped me at the beginning of my career. It would not have happened without his support. He was a great artist. I’ll miss him.”
Pee-wee’s Big Adventure‘s Pee-wee Herman character became known following the 1981 The Pee-wee Herman Show comedy special on HBO. The film character was a quirky man who dressed in his trademark gray suit, red bow tie and white loafers, and in the film went on an adventure as he hunted down his stolen bike.

Paul Reubens, the creator of “Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” who starred in several projects as the goofy, child-like Pee-wee Herman including 1985’s “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” has died at age 70, his estate said Monday.
“Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness,” his estate posted to Facebook.
“Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit,” the post continued.
The actor wrote a posthumous statement explaining why he chose not to disclose his cancer diagnosis. “Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years.

With Hollywood’s superhero movies experiencing “multiverse fever,” we’ve seen all kinds of new appearances from actors who’ve been in decades-old superhero films, including the meeting of all of the on-screen Spider-Men in No Way Home and Michael Keaton’s return as Batman for The Flash. Danny DeVito won rave reviews for his performance as Penguin in 1992’s Batman Returns, and if Keaton can make a comeback as Batman, DeVito says he’d absolutely be open to playing Penguin once again. DeVito once talked to us about the reasons why he considered Penguin to be one of his favorite roles. The Bat, the Cat, the Penguin…the Brick. Lego has announced they will be releasing a Batcave set this June modeled after the one featured in Tim Burton’s 1992 classic Batman Returns, itself designed by the great Bo Welch. And at nearly 4,000 pieces, it will definitely be one to flaunt when you flush–we mean finish–it.
As per Lego’s website, “this Batcave tableau contains an assortment of authentic details, including movable items that can be controlled from the rear. Users can turn the chair, change the computer screen and open and close the tool store and illuminated Batsuit vault.” Also housed within is the Batmobile, which, really, no Batcave is complete without. The set is a shadow box design in the shape of the bat-symbol, making it a fantastic display for bat-fans of all ages. After 30 years, Michael Keaton is putting on the cape and cowl again as Batman in this summer's DC Comics blockbuster "The Flash," and he's got the pictures to prove it. The last time Keaton suited up as the Dark Knight was back in 1992 for "Batman Returns," which many consider to be among the best superhero sequels of all time. In honor of Keaton's return, there are plenty of tributes to Tim Burton's "Batman" franchise in the works, and Lego has just unveiled their massive building brick contribution that fans can add to their collection next month.

The new Lego "Batman Returns" Batcave Shadow Box takes 3,981 building brick pieces to create a detailed recreation of Batman's secret lair. But what makes this set particularly cool for collectors is that it's designed to fit inside of a shadow box display that shows the interior of the Batcave through a Batman emblem-shaped window.

It just might be the Batcave to end all Batcaves.
Lego announced Tuesday a new Batman Batcave building set, this time inspired by the 1992 Tim Burton-directed feature Batman Returns.
The new set is geared for the adult collector and is almost 4,000 pieces. And in a unique design format, the set builds into a shadow box that opens up to reveal a highly detailed Batcave with display pieces and Batman iconography. The furniture can be moved, images on the screen can be swapped, and the vault can be opened.
The shadow box “window” is in the form of the Bat-symbol, which offers a striking look into the headquarters of the world’s biggest superhero, with the linchpin of the set being the Batmobile, modeled after the Burton movies starring Michael Keaton (see the images below).

Few Hollywood directors have managed to combine a distinctive artistic vision with tremendous commercial clout as successfully as Tim Burton. You can say what you want about his more recent output (I checked out after the heinous "Alice in Wonderland"), but there is no denying that the guy knows how to make a hit movie. In a career spanning almost 40 years and 19 films as a director, few of his movies have lost money, save for the likes of "Ed Wood." And even then, "Ed Wood" flopping felt like an appropriate tribute to its subject matter, the so-called worst director of all time who never found fame or made any money during his life.
Before the failure of his affectionate biopic of the man behind "Plan 9 From Outer Space," Burton had hit the ground running with a string of hits that showcased his left-field sensibilities while drawing in the crowds.

There are very few comic-book movies that have gone through the development hell that The Flash has gone through over the past decade, but it seems as though fans will finally get to see their favorite scarlet speedster get his own standalone film. With the DC adaptation set to premiere in June, as well as two trailers being dropped with massive implications about what the movie will hold for DC’s future, it’s safe to say that fans are already counting down the minutes until they can race to the theaters to see it.
All of that being said, there is a huge question mark looming over the superhero movie that unfortunately won’t be answered for seemingly years to come. James Gunn, the new co-ceo of DC Studios and the man at the helm of the new Dcu, stated back in January that The Flash will be “resetting...

Regarding villains terrorizing Gotham, few rule the streets with the creep factor of the Penguin. The stout, bird-like baddie is a tortured soul. In Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, Danny DeVito played the character akin to a rejected circus freak with abandonment issues and an axe to grind. In Matt Reeves’ The Batman, Colin Farrell taps into Penguin’s aspirations to rule Gotham with an iron fist, controlling who lives, who dies, and who patrols the alleyways. Devito and Farrell’s versions are wildly different. Still, they both crave control over Gothamites, while Batman looms like a shadow over their wicked dreams. As a part of this week’s Just for Variety, the outlet caught up with DeVito, who commented on whether he’ll play the Penguin again and what he thinks of Farrell’s version of Batman’s avian adversary.
According to DeVito, he has no plans to play the Penguin again.

As for “Mrs. Davis,” it is one heck of a ride. I’ve watched the first two episodes and it is completely bonkers, twisted and so much fun. Betty Gilpin stars as a nun searching for the Holy...

If the Joker is the most fun Batman villain to play, The Penguin has to be a close second. If you look at actors who've portrayed the legendary rogue, the character seems to bring out some genuinely novel and committed performances. Colin Farrell had unbridled fun playing the Penguin in "The Batman," telling Total Film, "It overtook me [...] I started moving and talking and gesticulating with my hands and it felt like being a kid in the sandbox, man."
Before Farrell and makeup geniuses Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine put their stamp on the Penguin, Stan Winston and Danny DeVito had a go at it for Tim Burton's 1992 effort "Batman Returns." And in much the same way Farrell was able to disappear beneath his prosthetics, DeVito was a little too committed to the role of the Penguin. In a making-of featurette, Winston, who'd designed DeVito's prosthetics, recalled seeing the actor on set,...

When HBO Max, Peacock and Disney+ launched, the backbone of their respective streaming services was the deep libraries of content that each of the powerhouse conglomerates had built up over decades. Now, as HBO Max transforms into Max, the new backbone of the platform that incorporates Discovery+ into the fold is leaning harder into the big franchises that continue to be a reason for subscribing in the first place.

Colin Farrell was virtually unrecognizable as Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, in 2022’s gritty “The Batman” film from Matt Reeves. Now they’re bringing the character to the new Max streaming service for an eight-episode series in 2024. An in-production preview of the series was unveiled on April 12 exclusively during Warner Bros. Discovery’s unveiling of the Max streaming service on the Warner Bros. lot in Los Angeles. Watch it above.
In “The Batman,” Farrell played the Penguin as a lieutenant for crime boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) who ran Falcone’s Iceberg Lounge. Spoiler alert: Falcone doesn’t make it to the end of the film, perhaps opening the door for other criminals to take control of Gotham City’s underworld. The film earned a trio of Oscar nominations: Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, the last of which was largely in recognition of the extensive prosthetics worn by Farrell.

Before he received his first Academy Award nomination for "The Banshees of Inisherin" — and lost to Brendan Fraser for "The Whale" — Colin Farrell put on real weight for his role as a whaler in the underseen AMC+ miniseries "The North Water" in 2021. When it came time for Farrell to play the Penguin in five or six scenes of "The Batman," however, he'd had enough, so he "decided on a fat suit" instead. At the time, he explained, "I didn't want to naturally go big again cause I had a few little health things as a result of 'The North Water.'"
Another reason why Farrell was maybe hesitant to bulk up again is that he already had experience gaining weight for his role as corrupt cop Ray Velcoro in HBO's "True Detective" season 2. In 2015, while serving as the chic spokesman for Dolce & Gabbana's Intenso fragrance, Farrell told...

"Batman: The Animated Series" is one of the crowning achievements of American animation. To this day, it's remembered for its atmospheric art design (homaging Fleischer Studios' Superman cartoons) and mature storytelling — even if it never forgot its young target audience along the way. The series' star, the late, legendary Kevin Conroy, is the definitive voice of the Dark Knight for a generation, while Harley Quinn, who was created for the series, has become the most successful DC Comics character who didn't originate in the comics.
The series' success meant its creative team shaped Batman in animation for the next decade. In 1993, the series led to the theatrical film, "Mask of the Phantasm," which took everything great about the series and pushed it further. While "Batman: The Animated Series" ended in 1995, it became only the first installment in the DC Animated Universe, which culminated wiith "Justice League Unlimited," which ran from...

Even before Matt Reeves’ The Batman hit theaters last year, the film felt in many ways like a return to form for the Dark Knight character’s onscreen persona. After a decidedly more violent version of the Caped Crusader was introduced by Zack Snyder and Ben Affleck across several Dceu films, fans were divided (to put it mildly) on the brutal interpretation of the character—as well as a fantastical one since he fought gods and bantered with Amazonians.
Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne, however, was back more or less where the character left off during the first two-thirds of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy: isolated as a vigilante on the streets, fighting gangsters and the cops in equal measure. Like Nolan’s films, the villains of The Batman were also decidedly stripped down: the Riddler became a Zodiac-inspired serial killer, the Penguin was a common thug,...

This report is not a drill! According to Deadline, Mike Flanagan has pitched a horror-centric creature feature about the classic DC villain Clayface! Before I explode from thinking about the possibilities (Clayface is among my top villains in comics), the project has not yet been given the green light… yet. To be clear, the studio has not said “No,” but there have been no offers or deals for the project. If DC approves the project, Clayface will be a villain—none of the villain-becomes-hero nonsense.
Deadline says Flanagan and his Intrepid Pictures partner Trevor Macy had a meeting with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran. The outlet says Flanagan wasn’t pitching the villain as a part of Matt Reeves’ The Batman sequel. However, Deadline also says scripts are constantly in flux, and Clayface is “a big addition to The Batman 2.” I wouldn’t cash that check yet, folks.

The label "direct-to-video" used to be a death knell for filmmakers and movie fans alike. In the early days of home video, the term typically referred to features that weren't good enough to get theatrical distribution, causing studios to subsequently dump them onto the shelves of Blockbusters and Hollywood Videos, where — via gaudy box art, ridiculous taglines and/or highlighting the name of a slumming movie star or a legit celebrity (who would likely only have a cameo role) — they would try to entice naïve renters to check it out.
It can be exceedingly difficult for a subgenre to change a poor reputation, but everything started to change once theatrical distribution was no longer the only game in Hollywood as video, cable, and streaming services became more ubiquitous. In recent years, self-proclaimed Trump svengali and pinstripe enthusiast Roger Stone has often been compared to DC Comics character the Penguin. Christoffer Guldbrandsen’s “A Storm Foretold,” a wild-ride doc that grants all-areas access to Stone over a three-year period starting with his 2019 indictment and subsequent pardon, suggests this is not strictly fair. For one thing, as the film begins, Stone is smoking the chunkiest cigar you have ever seen, rather than the more canonically acceptable cigarette holder wielded by the cartoon villain. For another, while Stone has more enemies that you can shake a fat stogie at, no single superhero has yet emerged to challenge him. If he is the Penguin, shouldn’t there also be a Batman?
Stone is introduced to us sitting on his back patio in relaxed, garrulous form. One would almost say “genial” except that from the start, Stone’s relationship with Guldbrandsen, who is...
