Cinema for Gaza, a group launched by a small group of female filmmakers and film journalists, has successfully raised more than $315,000 to support medical aid for the civilian population in Gaza.
A celebrity auction, organized by Cinema for Gaza, and supported by the likes of Tilda Swinton, Annie Lennox, Joaquin Phoenix, Spike Lee and Guillermo del Toro, raised some $316,778 (£254,297) for Medical Aid for Palestinians (Map), a U.K.-based charity that provides on-the-ground medical support, from sterile water to cancer drugs, for those on the Gaza Strip. The celebrities donated personal items — from signed film posters to personal Zoom chats to, in the case of Lennox, the handwritten lyrics to her Eurythmics hit “Sweet Dreams” — to be sold off to the highest bidder. (Lennox’s lyrics sheet was the top seller, with a bidder paying $26,222 for the piece of pop music history).

"His face was as the heavens and therein stuck." Who knew we'd be getting another brand new Jonathan Glazer film so soon after the Oscar-winning The Zone of Interest? Prada commissioned Glazer to direct a short ad promoting their latest handbag. He re-teamed with his Under the Skin star Scarlett Johansson, who is really the star of the show in this ad for Prada's The Galleria bag. "The campaign is a celebration of technique, an ode to the mechanism of acting as the true motor of cinema – and to the talent of the actor... Still & motion images showcase Johansson as an actor, honing her art — repeating phrases with different feeling and meaning, she showcases the infinite self-transformation that define an actor's skill." It also has another intriguing Mica Levi score, though it's hard to tell since there is barely 90 seconds of footage here. In addition to his acclaimed features, Glazer...

The Zone of Interest. When you start to really hear a movie, you’ll never be able to unhear it. The sound designer, like the cinematographer, is an artist disguised as a technician, a wielder of microphones and mixers whose deepest desire is to serve a cinematic vision. Sound design usually stays in the shadows, but sometimes a film comes along that really makes you listen: Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest (2023) is one of those films. Its soundscapes are intense, involving, and essential to our narrative comprehension of the film; this is sound design as storytelling, as counterpoint, as argument. The artist in disguise behind The Zone of Interest is Johnnie Burn, a British sound designer who, over the past decade, has carved a reputation as the ear of new auteur cinema. Through longstanding collaborations with Glazer and Yorgos Lanthimos (Burn is also behind the surreal soundscapes of...

Pj Harvey is a big Elvis Presley fan and meditates on his songs. She even created a fictional character inspired by Elvis’ “Love Me Tender.” In the same vein, she is a huge Bob Dylan fan and discussed her feelings about one of his more recent songs.
Pj Harvey said she could lose herself in Elvis Presley’s songs
During a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone, Harvey discussed her book-length poem Orlam. She was asked why the poem features a character named Wyman-Elvis who performs “Love Me Tender.”
“Well, I loved Elvis, as a lot of children of my era did, and I still love Elvis,” he said. “I love everything about him. I could lose myself in that voice, but not only that, the way he looked as well. He is almost a godlike figure in Orlam.“

Jonathan Glazer is a scalpel-precise filmmaker whose work explores how the smallest fissure in a pattern can undo your sense of time, self, and place. In “Birth,” a woman about to be married is confronted by a child purporting to be the reincarnated ghost of her dead first husband, unraveling her impending marriage. In “Under the Skin,” an alien succubus goes about her ways preying on men in Scotland, only to, as if by accident, discover the humanity within her. In “The Zone of Interest,” a Nazi concentration camp commandant’s body rebels against the horrible doings of his soul.
Glazer stamped his name as a director of eerie music videos for the likes of similarly contrarian groups Radiohead and Massive Attack, later applying the dreamlike and expressionistic demands of that genre to narrative feature lengths. All of his films feature some kind of reverie interlude, where the movie itself appears to be dreaming,...

Christian Friedel was overcome with shame. Days before playing Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz concentration camp, in Jonathan Glazer’s film The Zone of Interest, the German actor chose to visit Auschwitz for the first time. And since he’d already been given an undercut, Friedel had to tuck his Nazi hairdo underneath a baseball cap whilst touring the site where his character oversaw the extermination of 1.1 million Jews.

Sometimes directors don’t want you humming the music as you leave their film.
More than ever, filmmakers are seeking fresh musical approaches, especially when the subject matter is dark or fantastic. Three late-2023 releases demonstrate this with music that catches the ear in unusual ways.
Director Yorgos Lanthimos had never commissioned original music for any of his previous films. So for “Poor Things,” which seemed to demand a bespoke score, he turned to a composer who had never written one before: English musician Jerskin Fendrix, whose 2020 album “Winterreise” he had admired.
Fendrix is a classically trained pianist and violinist who has written an experimental opera and defiantly resisted conventional pop-music sounds. Lanthimos hired him six months before beginning principal photography on his sci-fi black comedy starring Emma Stone as Bella, a Victorian woman raised from the dead who embarks on an odyssey of self-discovery.

As a filmmaker and storyteller, Jonathan Glazer has made a career tossing audiences into minefields of morality without a life raft, challenging those at home to sit in ultimate discomfort and better understand characters who, on paper, would typically be avoided. "Sexy Beast" turned Ben Kingsley into one of cinema's greatest villains, "Birth" sees Nicole Kidman questioning all of her morals after a 10-year-old boy claims to be the reincarnation of her dead husband, and people are still trying to fully wrap their heads around the alien skinwalker tale of "Under the Skin." But it's his latest film, "The Zone of Interest," that many are finding to be his most difficult to process yet.
Adapted from Martin Amis' novel of the same name, "The Zone of Interest" (read our 10/10 review here) centers on Auschwitz Commandant Rudolf Höss, who lives an idyllic life with his wife Hedwig and their five children...

Jonathan Glazer's new film "The Zone of Interest" was given a limited theatrical release on December 15, 2023, and one might have already seen it popping up on critics' best-of-the-year lists. Indeed, it was voted the best film of the year by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and was nominated for Best Picture at the Golden Globes. It also won or was nominated for multiple awards at the Chicago Film Critics Association Awards, the National Board of Review, the National Society of Film Critics, and the Toronto Film Critics Association. "The Zone of Interest" opened to a wider audience on January 7, 2024, and the public at large now has an opportunity to see Glazer's harrowing, utterly disturbing World War II drama about the banality of evil, and the quotidian, everyday life experienced by the shared-walled neighbors to the Auschwitz concentration camp. The film will continue to expand to more theaters in the weeks ahead.

Searching for and listening to movie soundtrack music for the year is an active quest of curiosity, discovery, and collage. For those fatigued and pushing through the chilliest season, I hope this mix can provide both energy and warmth, as it did to me in making it.Trends in film music over the last decade are continuing strong in 2023, particularly in the ambition of independent auteurs using complex and unusual scoring. The foundation for this mix is Angela Schanelec's beautiful and aptly titled Music, which provides both diegetic and non-diegetic moments to guide us. Samples range from The Old Oak, in which classical choral choir meets Syrian guitar and words of hope that now hit harder than ever, to a mix of sentimental strings courtesy of the legendary Joe Hisaishi. Abstract experimental sounds by two completely different kinds of artists—Harmony Korine and Thomas Newman—are mixed with sliced...

Oscar’s music branch has had its say, naming 15 original scores and 15 songs to its shortlist for possible nomination at the 96th Academy Awards, with few surprises.
As expected, all three “Barbie” songs that were entered — Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” — made the 15-song list. Only two, under Academy rules, can be nominated.
The mild surprise was the citing of two new songs from “The Color Purple” (“Keep It Movin'” and “Superpower”) and two from “Flora and Son” (“High Life” and “Meet in the Middle”), while two of the biggest musicals of the season, “Wonka” and “Wish,” failed to make the cut in either category.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the shortlists in 10 categories for the upcoming 96th Oscars ceremony.
Overall, Greta Gerwig’s meta-comedy “Barbie” had the most mentions with five including sound, original song for its three submissions from Billie Eilish (“What I Was Made For?”), Dua Lipa (“Dance the Night”) and Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt (“I’m Just Ken”), and original score, from the latter duo. The big miss for “Barbie” was in makeup and hairstyling, which was the category that yielded the most surprises.
In addition to “Barbie,” “The Color Purple,” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” all failed to make the shortlist. Instead, the branch selected A24’s eccentric “Beau is Afraid” and Universal Pictures’ horror summer film “The Last Voyage of the Demeter.”

2023 had its fair share of memorable scores and music. Any year with new work from Joe Hisaishi and Mica Levi is going to be one for the books, but the last 12 months also gave us Robbie Robertson’s swan song and a Dev Hynes/Paul Schrader collaboration. In terms of performance, Bradley Cooper conducting the London Philharmonic was irresistible, but no more so than Talia Ryder’s opening number in The Sweet East or the hero of Fallen Leaves experiencing his moment of clarity while listening to a Swedish synth group. Maybe the best musical performance I saw in a movie this year comes at the beginning of Nicolas Philibert’s On the Adamant, a documentary about a psychiatric care center that sits on the river Seine and provides a port for inner storms. The singer’s name is François, an angular, middle-aged man who growls a raw rendition of...

As Martin Scorsese once said, “Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.” Indeed, the right piece of music––whether it’s an original score or a carefully selected song––can do wonders for a sequence, and today we’re looking at the 20 films that best expressed that notion in 2023.

Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller bravely take on the terrible challenge of being German actors playing Nazis in Jonathan Glazer’s unsparing Holocaust film “The Zone of Interest.” It’s a task each turned over quite a lot in their minds before agreeing to play Nazi commandant Rudolf Höss and his sociopathic wife Hedwig, who lived with their children in a hardly oblivious bucolic bubble next to the Auschwitz concentration camp at the start of World War II.
“We talked about, in a very intense way, the subject matter, about the fact that, to play these two characters documentary-style, is this right? Is this good? How can you do that?,” Friedel told IndieWire in a Zoom interview from the New York offices of A24, which releases the film this week in select theaters.

To produce the distinct sound design for “The Zone of Interest,” Johnnie Burn (sound designer and re-recording mixer) had to conduct a ton of research including reading novels and the testimonies of guards and prisoners at Auschwitz. From there he was able to create a template to frame the sounds of the movie. “I made a document that was about 600 pages long that catalogued all of the planes, automobiles, guns and everything that I needed to record, but more importantly, what to go and find so that I could reenact it,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). This led to a year-long quest to record different sounds including people playing in parks, people shouting in pain, rioters in Paris and young men shouting at 3:00 am as they exited a club. “We just knew that to have sound that was going to work,...

Holocaust movies are now a genre. It makes one more than a little queasy to acknowledge this. We’re talking about art that seeks to recreate an atrocity of such devastating scale and magnitude; to imagine the unimaginable. You can say the phrase “Holocaust movie” and a number of images and scenarios, conventions and clichés immediately spring to mind. Some of these feature films have been extraordinary. Several have been borderline exploitative. A few have been outright offensive. German philosopher Theodor Adorno is often misquoted as saying, “There’s no...

The Golden Globes – and the Hollywood Foreign Press organization that runs them — continue to lean into the idea of them as a mysterious, shadowy cabal where no one is exactly certain of who votes for the winners. And while the ceremony has landed a proper US broadcast network this year in CBS, it's for a greatly reduced fee. And the clout of the awards themselves has certainly shrunk in recent years thanks to scandals and other issues. But they're rolling out again, and the nominations have arrived, with Barbie, Oppenheimer, The Holdovers and Killers Of The Flower Moon dominating the film side while the likes of Succession and The Bear garnered plenty of nominations on the TV front.
Barbie, as it has in so many other ways, ruled over all with the second-most nominations in Globes history (nine). On its heels, the likes of Killers Of The Flower Moon, Oppenheimer,...

Remember: it’s no longer the Hollywood Foreign Press. Much of that idiosyncratic group of 90 mostly white Hollywood correspondents is buried inside a new diverse list of 300 voters from 75 countries, 60 percent people of color. And most of them, unlike the core of international entertainment reporters based in Hollywood, are bonafide film critics.

On Monday, Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama announced the nominees for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. They made the announcement live from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
Among the 27 categories the two announced, there were some new ones: Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement as well as Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.
The 81st Golden Globes will air on CBS (and stream on Paramount+) on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt. The show will be produced by Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirschner; Weiss will direct.
The Golden Globes found a new home on CBS in November, after its longtime network NBC did not renew its contract with the group, which has been trying to reset since a Los Angeles Time exposé reported in April 2021 that there were zero Black members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and detailed numerous accusations of improper behavior within the organization.
