Exclusive: Actor-producer Cory Hardrict has set Conmen as the first feature to be produced under his Hardcor Films banner, after completing 30% of a $100M capital raise through Veritas Gold Productions’ Perennial Film Fund to support an upcoming slate of 10-15 productions.
Hardrict will star opposite Neil Brown Jr. in Conmen, which is one of four films he intends to make through Hardcor this year. The upcoming feature to be directed by Mike Tiddes will watch as two Black conmen take on the guise of FBI agents in order to rip off a heroin-dealing Klansman and his Sheriff’s son. Brown and Robert McEveety wrote the script. Ryan Lewis is also attached to produce the pic, with Brown co-producing. Hardrict will look to raise the remaining capital for his slate over the next three to four years, in concert with Veritas principals Harold Whitfield and Martin Scruggs.

Unfortunately, actor and director Edward James Olmos, along with his writer Robert McEveety, are the latest to join that latter group, with the film The Devil Has a Name. Despite noble ambitions and a solid cast, this is a misfire. The movie is a dramedy, pitting an oil company against a farmer, with wide ranging consequences. When Gigi (Kate Bosworth) is pulled in front of her bosses to find out just what the hell happened, she tells the story of a battle with Fred Stern...

Big Oil has been wrecking the environment for decades with spills, fires, and wastewater ponds amongst other atrocities to Mother Nature that place their bottom line above morality. They have the money to do it and the power to avoid any consequences—at least those that ultimately cost more than the price of overhauling the industry in a way that would make them compliant where Earth’s sustainability is concerned. It’s called “net present value.” As long as you make more profit doing bad than the net loss incurred if you’re caught, there’ no reason to fix the status quo. In their mind nothing is actually broken. Just like you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs, you can’t become a billion dollar company without sacrificing lives.
