In today’s film news roundup, Ansel Elgort is going to high school, “Rockaway” gets a release, and “Suspiria” producer Bradley Fischer is honored.
Casting
Ansel Elgort has come aboard to star in the drama “The Great High School Imposter” for Participant Media and Condé Nast Entertainment.
The project is based on a Daniel Riley GQ Magazine article published this year about Artur Samarin, a young Ukranian man who posed as a teenager so he could be adopted by a childless couple in a small Pennsylvania town and became the top student in his high school. Saramin was five years older than he claimed. His adopted parents turned him into the authorities.
Mike Makowsky is adapting the script. Jeremy Steckler of Condé Nast Entertainment is producing. Makowsky, Elgort, and Emily Gerson Saines will be executive producers. Robert Kessel and Jonathan King are overseeing for Participant.

“Kevin Can Wait” has been canceled by CBS after two season, Variety has learned.
The CBS sitcom stars Kevin James, Leah Remini, Taylor Spreitler, Mary-Charles Jones, James Digiacomo, Ryan Cartwright, Lenny Venito, Gary Valentine, and Leonard Earl Howze. James, Rock Reuben, Rob Long, Jeff Sussman, Andy Fickman, Tony Sheehan, and Steve Mosko are executive producers for Sony Pictures TV and CBS Television Studios.
“Kevin Can Wait” underwent a creative overhaul between seasons one and two, with original co-star Erinn Hayes’ character written off the show and Remini joining the cast, reuniting James with his former “King of Queens” co-star.
But the show still saw a big ratings slide in its second season. The cancelation after investing in two seasons is a tough cut for Sony Pictures Television, which will shop the series to other buyers.

CBS has opted not to pick up a third season of its Kevin James comedy series Kevin Can Wait.
This is one of the biggest casualties at CBS this season. The network had set out to shake things up on Monday, where its ratings fortunes had fallen. It has now canceled Kevin Can Wait, Superior Donuts and Scorpion and only has renewed Man with a Plan.
Fueled by the popularity of its star Kevin James and boosted by The Bing Bang Theory as a lead, Kevin Can Wait got off to a blazing start in fall 2016 and went on to become a sturdy Monday 8 Pm anchor. The series ranked as the most watched and highest rated new comedy last season. But there was some ratings decline over the course of the season.
Additionally, midway through Season 1, the series parted ways with co-creator and showrunner Bruce Helford, who now steers ABC’s Roseanne revival.

In terms of its demo average, the first season of Kevin James' Kevin Can Wait TV show was a top three performer for CBS. The comedy also ranked in 10th place in terms of total audience size, during the 2016-17 television season. That doesn't tell the whole story, though. The numbers dwindled after it lost The Big Bang Theory as its lead-in. In the second season they're shaking things up, by killing off Erinn Hayes' character, Donna Gable, and bringing on James' King of Queens co-star, Leah Remini, to reprise her season one turn as Vanessa Cellucci. Can reuniting this comic duo further build upon this successful series' ratings? Will Kevin Can Wait be cancelled or renewed for season three on CBS? Stay tuned. This year’s Oscar race features a number of powerful performance by minor actors, that is, under the age of 18.
Tackling roles that would require many veteran actors to take pause, this year’s crop of young talent is one of the strongest in recent memories, and the Academy may very well take notice.
In the past decade there have only been three actors under the age of 18 to have been nominated in the four major acting categories: Quvenzhane Wallis for best actress in Beasts of the Southern Wild in 2012 at the age of nine years, 135 days (the youngest nominee in that category’s history), Abigail Breslin for best supporting actress in 2006’s Little Miss Sunshine at the age of 10 years, 284 days, and Saoirse Ronan, who is one of the frontrunners in this year’s best actress race for her performance as an Irish immigrant in Brooklyn,...

Beautifully portrays a very universal experience — not only of immigration but of growing up — via an elegantly nuanced performance by Saoirse Ronan. I’m “biast” (pro): love Saoirse Ronan
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

In 2011, I moved from New York to London. I can make free video phone calls to my friends and family, and I can be home in a few hours; planes go back and forth between the two cities with the regularity and frequency of a bus schedule (if, alas, for quite a bit more than bus fare). But still: it was hard. It remains an emotional challenge to be separated from people I love back home even as I get more and more emotionally connected to a new home.
So I cannot even imagine what it must have...

Fancy checking out one of the best films of the year? Here's our review of Brooklyn, starring Saiorse Ronan.
In amongst the showier performance-led movies to come this awards season, it's reassuring to see an unassuming coming-of-age story like Brooklyn receiving its fair share of plaudits too. Based on Colm Tóibín's novel of the same name, Brooklyn follows an immigrant's trans-Atlantic love song, set between south-east Ireland and New York City.
In the 1950s, Eilis Lacey (Saiorse Ronan) is a young Irish woman living in Enniscorthy who gets the opportunity of a lifetime when kindly priest Father Flood (Jim Broadbent) arranges for her to travel to Brooklyn and take up a job at a department store. Of course, Eilis jumps at the chance, but leaves behind her elder sister Rose (Fiona Glascott) and her mother Mary (Jane Brennan) for the glamour of America.
