There are two things ScHoolboy Q has been trying to wrap his head around.
One of them is the success of Blue Lips, the rapper’s sixth album and first in nearly five years, released earlier this month. The South Central Los Angeles rapper with storied backgrounds as both a Crip and a golfer returned with a vengeance on Blue Lips, an exquisite display of his genre’s range and depths. On Blue Lips, Schoolboy Q’s first album since 2019’s utterly unremarkable Crash Talk, there’s a sense that the Los Angeles rapper is trying to make up for lost time. He exudes an assured confidence throughout that, unlike past releases like 2016’s Black Face LP, makes it feel like he has something to prove. He’s able to whip up an endless amount of versatile and oddball flows, and does so with an equally fresh and flippant demeanor.
Schoolboy delivers each word on “Pop” with a tossed-off precision that’s both laser-focused to fit the track’s rhyme scheme and casual in its cadence. He punctuates the word “pop” with a snickering snarl, accompanied by the sound of a pistol being fired. Later in the track, he lowers his voice to a scruffy register, furiously spitting his words out. The entire song, including a notably batshit Rico Nasty feature,...

“Gang shit, I invented that, huh?” asks Schoolboy Q on “Pop,” a track from Blue Lips, his first album in nearly five years. It’s clearly an overstatement. But give the former Hoover Street Crip credit: Back in the early 2010s, he fused the open-eared, genre-less sensibility of Tumblr rap with vintage L.A. gangsta flows in classic moments like “Hands on the Wheel” and “Druggys Wit Hoes Again.” Along with Vince Staples, Boogie and others, Q marked a clear break from the city’s G-funk identity, even as he...

When the MTV Video Music Awards announced its nominations last month, no one was surprised when Taylor Swift and Sza were the top contenders. But heads turned when Sza’s name was missing from the artist of the year category after the star launched one of the year’s top albums with Sos, both a critical and commercial success.
“Obviously, she had one of the best years, if not the best year, of any artist at this point. I don’t see why she wouldn’t be nominated for artist of the year. It just really didn’t make any sense to me. It’s disrespectful,” Sza’s manager, Terrence “Punch” Henderson, tells The Hollywood Reporter in an interview.
Those nominated for artist of the year included Beyoncé, Shakira, Nicki Minaj, Karol G, Doja Cat and Swift, who won the prize at Tuesday night’s show.

Mac Miller’s sophomore album Watching Movies With the Sound Off turned 10 this week, and in honor of its anniversary, the late rapper’s estate and Rostrum Records have released a special 10th anniversary edition of the LP.
Featured on the album now is the original version of opening track “The Star Room,” titled “The Star Room (Og Version).” Miller had previously shared this version on SoundCloud in 2014. It features a different beat than the take that appeared on the album and also does not feature Miller’s alter ego Delusional Thomas.

Aap Rocky’s Long.Live.Aap was released in January 2013, and to celebrate its 10th year anniversary, the rapper has released a reworked “Angels” music video dubbed “Angels Pt. 2.”

Working in the Carson, California, studio from which Top Dawg Entertainment was launched has become something of a rite of passage for new artists on the label. After building the studio in the back of his unassuming suburban home around 2004, founder Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith rounded up four of the most-talented MCs in the L.A. area — Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, ScHoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul — and brought out the best in them. Nearly two decades later, Tde’s first female rapper found herself in the wood-paneled, windowless cave known as the House of Pain.

Kid Cudi has always been transparent in his music - it's the reason he's considered one of the most influential artists of our generation. The prolific rapper's intimate documentary, A Man Named Scott, digs deep into the grisly struggles he's experienced in his career. The film reveals how Cudi used music as his therapy to work through his inner turmoil and, in doing so, how he inspired a new generation of rap artists to have a real dialogue around one of the most important issues today: mental health.
Hip-hop has always had a complicated relationship with mental health. The genre became an outlet for artists to rap about their everyday struggles in its early years (like Dmx's "Slippin'" and Geto Boys' "Mind Playing Tricks on Me"). Still, mental health advocacy in rap didn't gain much-needed momentum until the 2010s. Kid Cudi, who started out as Kanye West's protégé in 2008, was...

Just 24 hours ahead of the fifth and final season premiere of “Insecure,” creator and star Issa Rae welcomed hundreds of fans gathered at the parking-lot-turned-venue of Hilltop’s Coffee and Kitchen in L.A. for Insecure Fest — a five-hour live musical celebration of the show.
“I gotta shout out Hilltop for hosting this in the parking lot, make sure to go there and get you some lavender lattes because that’s my favorite,” Rae quipped, before giving a final thanks to HBO for giving her and the show this platform.
First held as a block party in Brooklyn celebrating “Insecure’s” first season, the festival has grown to mimic Rae’s character Issa Dee’s block party featured in Season 4 of the HBO comedy. Between 1971 and 1997, if you said “The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers,” you were talking about comics artist Gilbert Shelton’s illustrated pothead underground series. Stoned being the way of the walk, Shelton characters like Phineas T. Phreak and Freewheelin’ Franklin Freek were busy buying weed, selling weed and talking about weed.
It is fitting then that Lionsgate and its partners, Wtg Enterprises, chose 4/20 to announce further casting for their new joint animated series, “The Freak Brothers.” Pete Davidson, Tiffany Haddish, Woody Harrelson, La La Anthony, John Goodman and the stars of Comedy Central’s “Workaholics,” Adam Devine and Blake Anderson, had already signed on. (Devine and Anderson also serve as executive producers on the series.) Today comes word that Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, the founder of Top Dawg Entertainment (Tde) has produced the show’s theme song and is serving as executive producer on the series, and ScHoolboy Q will play a character based on himself.

Exclusive: The Freak Brothers animated series adaptation is moving ahead with Andrea Savage and La La Anthony the latest names to join the project as well as Lionsgate coming on board.
The series, which is based on The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, the 1960s underground cult comic created by Gilbert Shelton, follows three stoner characters who, after smoking a magical strain of weed in 1969, are transported 50 years into the future to 2020 bringing their ’60s San Francisco attitude to the modern world.
Woody Harrelson voices laid-back Freewheelin’ Franklin Freek, John Goodman voices man-child Fat Freddy Freekowtski, and Pete Davidson voices paranoid Phineas T. Phreakers. Tiffany Haddish also features as Kitty, alongside Workaholics alums Adam Devine and Blake Anderson, who play Chuck and Charlie, a couple of weed savants always looking for the next side-hustle with hearts of gold hidden beneath their unwashed exteriors.

That’s saying something; Albarn has always proposed Gorillaz as a space beyond and between pop music’s borders, and over the decades everyone from Mark E. Smith to Bobby Womack to Pusha T has felt at home swinging by to chill. It’s a project that feels especially worthwhile in the era of Brexit and hyper-nationalism, even if the albums it produces can often be so intentionally all-over-the place as to sometimes seem nowhere at all.

Gorillaz recruited Schoolboy Q to honor Pac-Man on the animated outfit’s latest Song Machine track, “Pac-Man,” which arrives just weeks after the 40th anniversary of the arcade classic.
The song opens with Gorillaz mastermind Damon Albarn lacing his low voice over a thick beat that recalls the heyday of the G-funk era. The instrumentals get an added punch-up when Schoolboy Q first takes over, although the beat switches subtly again as the rapper glides over its woozy outro.

One year, six months, and 13 days.
That is how long Issa Rae made us wait between seasons three and four of Insecure.
It was such a long time, and fans were getting antsy while Issa pursued other projects.
Luckily for us, it was definitely worth the wait! Issa gave us, arguably, the best season by far. The show is usually a comedy full of awkward moments, but this season we delved much deeper into the characters and their growth. Here are just a few reasons why it's a favorite.
Issa Got her Life Together (Mostly)
Let's be real. In the first couple of seasons, Issa was kind of a mess.
She was in a dead-end job. She cheated on Lawrence. Then ended up sleeping on the couch of the guy with which she cheated. Sis had a 425 credit score. It was not looking good.
In season three, however, we started to see things turn around.

Damon Albarn performed his first ever “duet” with his animated outfit Gorillaz with a rendition of “Aries” on Jimmy Kimmel Live Tuesday.
Albarn is of, course, always playing with Gorillaz in the sense that he’s the mastermind behind the animated outfit’s music. But the Kimmel appearance actually placed him alongside Gorillaz singer 2-D so they could split vocal duties on “Aries.”
Despite not needing to — for obvious reasons — Albarn and 2-D delivered their performance over video chat to show they were practicing proper social-distancing protocol. While Albarn played...

Amazon has given a two-season, 16-episode order to half-hour adult animated comedy Fairfax, from Matt Hausfater (Undateable), Aaron Buchsbaum and Teddy Riley, Serious Business, Titmouse and Amazon Studios. The series is slated to premiere on Amazon Prime Video in 2021 in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.
Created and executive produced by Hausfater, Buchsbaum and Riley, Fairfax follows four middle school best friends on their never-ending quest for clout on Fairfax Avenue – La’s pulsing heart of hypebeast culture.
“This show is a love letter to kids today – the generation that will most definitely save the world from global warming, if they don’t die from eating Tide Pods first,” said Hausfater, Buchsbaum and Riley. “It’s a modern look at the timeless struggle to be cooler than you are, to fit in while standing out, and what it feels like to wait in line for a pair of sneakers you’re never going to cop.

The clip was co-directed by the two rappers along with Mike Carson, and takes cues from the likes of Missy Elliott and Outkast in its bizarre, trippy visuals: What starts out as a normal day for Sean and Ferg, buying snacks at the liquor store and debating whether Arizona Ice Tea lowers your sperm count, turns into a wild afternoon filled with demon children, giant watches, do-rag superhero capes and a dance party in a cavern.
