HBO’s Succession and FX’s The Bear earned top honors at the 39th annual Television Critics Association’s annual awards, the organization announced Monday.
Rather than being presented in the closing weekend at the semi-annual press tour, the awards were released online after the summer session was canceled as a result of Hollywood’s labor battles.
HBO’s Succession earned the biggest award — the prestigious program of the year prize — and took home its third overall achievement in drama after previously winning in the category in 2022 and 2020. FX’s The Bear sizzled with wins for outstanding new program and took home the award for achievement in comedy.
Both Succession and The Bear were the only shows with multiple wins this year, helping HBO and FX tie for the lead with Disney+ and Netflix, who each had two wins apiece.

HBO’s “Succession” was a critical darling, so it’s probably befitting that the show would end its run with two final lauds from the Television Critics Assn. The 39th Annual TCA Awards — which canceled its in-person event this year due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes — released its list of winners on Monday, with “Succession” grabbing the prizes for program of the year, as well as outstanding achievement in drama (an award it also won in 2022 and 2020).
Other major winners included FX’s “The Bear,” which airs on Hulu. The series’ first season was honored as outstanding new program, as well as outstanding achievement in comedy. The TCA spread the wealth when it comes to individual achievements, honoring “Better Call Saul” star Rhea Seehorn in drama, and “Poker Face” star Natasha Lyonne in comedy.

This summer’s Television Critics Association Press Tour, which was set to kick off on July 28, will not happen if the WGA strike extends into July, said officials from the organization Tuesday.
“Now that the WGA has gone on strike, there are obvious questions about summer press tour, and we wanted to share everything we know right now. Our position is that if the studios and the guilds do not reach an agreement in a timely manner, the summer tour cannot take place,” TCA’s statement read in part.
TCA president Melanie McFarland, VP Jacqueline Cutler, secretary Andy Dehnart and hotel coordinator Eric Kohanik met with staff at the Langham Huntington hotel in Pasadena and will present more information by the end of the week.

The new Netflix movie Your Place or Mine debuted earlier this month, starring Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon. Some critics think that the lighthearted new rom-com is part of a happy new trend in movies. But for Kutcher, the best reason for making the film has nothing to do with what’s happening in the movie industry at all. He had a much more personal motivation, one many of us can probably relate to.

Christina Ricci should be considered a potential surprise Emmy winner in the Best Drama Supporting Actress category for her terrific performance as Misty in “Yellowjackets,” created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson. The gripping 10-episode first season with two parallel storylines— one, a high school girls soccer team struggling to live in the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash, and two, those survivors decades later navigating their way through the world as adults — was a critical hit for Showtime this past year. The series netted seven Emmy Award nominations, including Best Drama Series and Best Drama Actress for Melanie Lynskey as Shauna, but Ricci is the clear stand-out in an outstanding ensemble cast. As Lorraine Ali says in The Los Angeles Times, “Ricci [kills] in ‘Yellowjackets,’ figuratively and literally.” Why might Christina Ricci win the Emmy? Below are my top four reasons.

One of the first things you notice about “Jett” is the color. Even in the dingiest locations, saddled with the occasional criminal underworld lowlife, there’s usually something in the frame that pops. It could be an interior drenched in neon mood lighting, a bright eye-catching accessory, or a bulb giving off any shade other than beige. This is a show set in a world of criminals, one that they’re not afraid to add a little zest to.
The best parts of this series, written and directed by Sebastián Gutiérrez, recognize the idea that all of that pizzazz means nothing if there’s nothing to the people under that glow. Comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short have been friends for over 35 years, so their instant chemistry on screen in Hulu’s freshman comedy series “Only Murders in the Building” surprised nobody. Introducing Selena Gomez as their ‘third amigo’ on the series, though, proved to be a stroke of genius for this hilarious send-up of true crime podcasts. Going toe-to-toe with Martin and Short, Gomez anchors their antics with a mysterious and charismatic performance.
Set in an envy-inducing New York apartment building on the Upper West Side, “Only Murders in the Building” draws Martin, Short, and Gomez’s three mystery podcast enthusiasts together when one of their fellow tenants is killed. What begins as an amateur sleuth tale gets increasingly complicated when we learn that Gomez’s Mabel knows a lot more about the victim than she initially let on. “The Queen’s Gambit” director and writer Scott Frank was called out Sunday on Twitter for insisting on pushing through his acceptance speech at the Emmys on Sunday for about two minutes despite the insistence from the orchestra’s cue that he wrap it up.
Frank won for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his work on the Anya Taylor-Joy-led Netflix series, and gave a speech that thanked Taylor-Joy, among many others, involved in the show and his personal life, as he was given several notices from the producers via the classic play-off music to wrap it up. At one point he responded, “Really?” to the tune and pressed on.

This morning the Television Critics Association announced the winners of the group’s 37th Annual TCA Awards, shining a spotlight on the finest performances and programs from the 2020-2021 television season. In a likely preview of Sunday night’s Primetime Emmy Awards, Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” was the organization’s big winner, triumphing in three of the 11 categories aimed at current programming, including prizes for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, Outstanding New Program, and Program of the Year.
The winners were determined by votes cast by the TCA’s network of more than 250 professional TV critics and journalists in the United States and Canada.
Three wins was the ceiling for any contender at the TCA Awards, with Apple TV+, Netflix, and HBO all winning three awards, though with one victory for HBO Max, it would appear that the biggest winner of day is the Warner Media empire.

Mandy Patinkin’s Judge Hal Wackner, the latest kooky character on the Paramount+ series “The Good Fight,” makes his litigants end each lawsuit by saying to one another, “I respect and I love you.” Critics have shared the exact same sentiment about this criminally underrated series, which has been earning some of the best notices of its entire run for its brilliantly bizarre fifth season that wraps up on Thursday.
Its new characters, including Patinkin’s Wackner and Charmaine Bingwa‘s enigmatic new lawyer Carmen Moyo, topical episodes on medical racism in the treatment of Covid-19 and hilarious, moving visits from historical figures like Elaine May’s Ruth Bader Ginsberg have earned the plaudits of critics. Kevin Fallon (Daily Beast) calls the season “flawless,” writing that the show is “having what may be its best season ever,” including “the most thrilling stretch of episodes in a TV series this year.

While many were expecting to see a returning favourite or revived character from series past, the answer turned out to a brand new addition for series 13: Game of Thrones and Broadchurch actor Jacob Anderson.
Anderson will play new character Vinder in series 13. He’ll be a recurring role, and was described on the panel as a fun, adventurous action hero who’ll have his own spaceship. In a pre-recorded introductory video, Anderson revealed:
“Not only did I get to go on the Tardis and press all the buttons and flip all the levers and the switches but I got my own ship, and my own ship had its own world of buttons and levers and switches that you could actually press and you could actually play with. I was like,...

Doreen St. Félix (New Yorker) calls Mbedu a “revelation,” James Poniewozik (New York Times) commends her performance as “magnetic,” and Melanie McFarland (Salon) applauds how Mbedu brings Cora “alive through an array of tempers,” especially...

The Golden Globes are keen on “The Crown.” The first three seasons of the Netflix drama series, which chronicles the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, scored nine Globe nominations and won three. Its critically-acclaimed fourth season looks poised to outpace itself, though, with our combined odds predicting a whopping seven bids when nominations are announced on February 3. Two of those nominations will come in TV Supporting Actress race.
Gillian Anderson currently leads our combined odds, with the majority of our experts and editors predicting her victory. Anderson’s uncanny performance as Margaret Thatcher stunned critics, with Melanie McFarland (Salon) calling her turn “nothing short of masterful” and Hank Stuever (Washington Post) applauding her as “devastatingly precise.” A Globes bid for “The Crown” would follow her four consecutive nominations for “The X Files,” for which she won in 1997, and one for the miniseries “Bleak House.”

Last year Awkwafina made history as the first woman of Asian descent to win the Golden Globe for Comedy/Musical Actress category for “The Farewell.” This year she could do the same on the TV side for her Comedy Central hit “Awkwafina is Nora from Queens.” The network renewed the show for a second season before the first had even started airing last winter.
From her start as a rapper and stand-up, Awkwafina went on to scene-stealing supporting roles in “Ocean’s 8” and “Crazy Rich Asians” (both in 2018) before demonstrating her dramatic chops in the indie hit film “The Farewell.” She starred as a woman struggling to decide whether to tell her grandmother that she’s dying of cancer or go along with the lie the rest of the family has been telling the ailing woman.
In “Nora From Queens,” Awkwafina plays a fictionalized version of herself. Critics hailed both her performance and the show.

The horror/sci-fi thrill ride led by stars Jonathan Majors, Jurnee Smollett, Courtney B. Vance and Michael Kenneth Williams earned rave reviews from critics and proved that powerhouse acting performances weren’t reserved for traditional dramas. Now it could make SAG Awards history by becoming the first series led by a predominantly Black cast to be nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

In the month since police killed George Floyd, the United States is finally reckoning in a very real way with how racial inequity is baked in to every level of society. As people take to the streets to protest violence and injustice against Black people, the news media has simultaneously been grappling with how to cover this seismic shift, and its own complicity in prioritizing white voices and audiences above all else. Media has the power to shape narratives, amplify viewpoints and ascribe importance. Every corner of this industry — even entertainment — needs to seriously reexamine its age-old routines and work to create new and more thoughtful ones that actively push against racist instincts.
As a critic at a prominent publication, whose words are more likely to reach the industry they’re covering than most, I’ve personally been reassessing what I write about in order to attack my own latent biases head-on.

Derek Cianfrance, the writer and director of HBO’s “I Know This Much Is True,” said he quickly sparked to two aspects of the project: It was a family story, and it was a tragic story.
“It just fell in line with so much of what I feel like my mission as a filmmaker has been, which is to explore stories of family,” Cianfrance said in an interview with IndieWire. “Stories of these intimate connections that we don’t necessarily choose in our lives, but that we’re bound to.”
“Bound to” is a choice of words as apt as it is revealing, given the trademark sorrow infused in so much of Cianfrance’s work. Watching films like “Blue Valentine” and “The Place Beyond the Pines,” can feel like you’re trapped — forcing you to confront your grief, ready or not.
“I always understood that to experience a tragedy — to witness,...

Disney+ officially landed on November 12, and with it its latest exercise in brand-extension. “The Mandalorian” is a new live-action series set in the “Star Wars” universe. But is it a worthy expansion of the “Star Wars” universe? Critics didn’t get a chance to evaluate the show ahead of time, but they’ve been checking it out since it premiere, and the reviews are in.
As of this writing “The Mandalorian” has a MetaCritic score of 68 based on 21 reviews counted thus far: 16 positive, 5 mixed, none outright negative.
