The premise of the drag makeover show “We’re Here” is that queer liberation hasn’t extended as far as it could. For three seasons, a group of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” alumni have traveled to small towns throughout the country, helping members of the local LGBTQ community assert their identity and visibility through gender-bending performances. But even a project that deliberately targets places where gay and trans people might feel cut off from a sense of camaraderie — many locations are scattered throughout the South and Midwest, with occasional detours to California and Hawai’i — didn’t anticipate their own art form coming under such intense public scrutiny.
“I would never have predicted that, four seasons later, it’s actually harder to be out and proud,” Priyanka says in last month’s premiere. The “Canada’s Drag Race” winner is one of several new faces this season, which bids farewell to Bob the Drag Queen,...

Check under most any post relating to the recently released trailer for Luc Besson’s “Dogman,” and you’ll find one, if not several responses riffing, to various degrees of enthusiasm, on the theme of “Omg, what if ‘Joker’ but with dogs?” That rhetorical question can now be answered, following this numbskulled nonsense movie’s inexplicable Venice Competition premiere, with a resounding “If only.” The bludgeoningly obvious, creatively inert, deathly dull tale of a cross-dressing misfit in a wheelchair who favors canine company over that of humans, it is scarcely fit to lap from the same water bowl as Todd Phillips’ controversial Golden Lion winner. Even those who didn’t much like “Joker” have to admit that it did not actively treat its audience as if they were so brain-dead that everyone left feeling about 30 Iq points dumber than when they went in.

GLAAD Media Awards, Jon Stewart Show Solidarity With Writers Strike: “Labor Issues Are Queer Issues”
The 34th annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York doubled as a show of solidarity for the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike on Saturday night, as Jon Stewart, Fire Island writer-star Joel Kim Booster, GLAAD CEO Sarah Kate Ellis and White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre all shared messages of support before and during the show.

Top drag stars, LGBTQ celebrities including Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Adam Lambert, and celebrity allies of the queer community banded together Sunday to stage Drag Isn’t Dangerous, a telethon to raise money to combat anti-lgbtq legislation.
As anti-drag and anti-trans bills proliferate across the United States — such as Tennessee’s ban on public drag performances (which has been temporarily blocked by a judge) — the telethon brought in more than $500,000 from 5,000 individual donors. According to the organizers, “all net proceeds from the event will be divided among approved charities (GLAAD, Glsen, Headcount, Black Queer Town Hall, The ACLU Drag Defense Fund, Trans Justice Funding Project, Victory Fund) that support Lgbtqia+ causes and drag performers in need, especially in states where they face discrimination and bans.” The fundraiser, held through GoFundMe, continues through Tuesday.

Tim Westwood has been interviewed twice under police caution after allegations of sexual misconduct.
Last year, the DJ was accused of predatory and unwanted sexual behaviour and touching by multiple women.
In a joint investigation by the BBC and The Guardian, seven women – all of whom are Black – spoke about the alleged incidents, which are said to have taken place between 1992 and 2017.
Westwood strenuously denied the allegations at the time, with a spokesperson alleging that the claims were completely false.
On Wednesday (12 April), the Metropolitan Police said officers were investigating five accusations of offences alleged to have happened between 1982 and 2016.
“Police are investigating five reports relating to allegations of non-recent sexual offences allegedly committed by a man,” their statement read.
“The offences are alleged to have occurred in London between 1982 and 2016. A 65-year-old man was interviewed under caution on March 15 2023 and April 4 2023.”

RuPaul‘s Drag Race is now in its 15th season, and it’s more popular than ever. But just like with any other reality TV show, eventually, some of the show’s secrets are bound to be revealed. For example, in the earlier seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race, future losers learned they were about to be eliminated from the race in a rather abrupt way.

So… how does the show work, exactly? For those not familiar, RuPaul’s Drag Race features a series of drag performers, all of which are selected by host RuPaul and the production team to compete. The chosen pool of performers competes in each episode, performing a series of challenges.

Also, these so-called laws to protect our children are unfounded and pathetic. Anyone with half a brain knows not to fuck with a drag queen. Bob [the Drag Queen] and I will see you from the stage in Nashville where we will celebrate the beauty that is the queer community.”
Along with Nashville show, Madonna has added seven other new dates to “The Celebration Tour,” including shows in Washington D.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Sorry I’ve been a bit Mia recently. In addition to moving into a new apartment, I got hit with that darned flu. Now I’m back and ready for the holidays. But before we say goodbye to 2022, here’s one more column for you.
Darren Aronofsky and Chris Hemsworth may be working on a scripted feature together.
The two teamed up recently for the Disney+ series “Limitless With Chris Hemsworth,” which Aronofsky created. The show features the “Thor” star doing extreme physical challenges to understand the aging process. “I love him and I think he loves me,” Aronofsky tells me, laughing. “I think he’s a great human being and a gentleman and a great parent. He’s really an inspiration to me. And so I would love to work with him again. We’re trying to find the right piece.

Dancing with the Stars is logging a couple of firsts in its 31st season. Chief among them: a new digital home, a significant star from a competing broadcast network and its first-ever drag queen competitor.
Actor and Performer D.J. “Shangela” Pierce, who was the first contestant to compete on three separate seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race, will dance with Gleb Savchenko when the former ABC competition show makes its debut on Disney+ Shangela’s participation marks the first time a drag queen has ever competed for the mirror ball trophy.
Joining Shangela in the ballroom is Wayne Brady, the host of CBS’ Let’s Make a Deal, along with a platinum recording artist, a Real Housewife, a Bachelorette and an Og angel of Charlie’s, among several other famous (or should we say infamous?) celebrities. The entire cast was announced this morning on Good Morning America in anticipation of the show’s Sept.

Would you like your social-justice messages delivered with a huge dose of glamour from three world-class drag queens? Then “We’re Here” is for you!
The premise is slyly subversive: Bob the Drag Queen, Eureka and Shangela roll into a small town in a more conservative part of the country, seek out the LGBTQ+ community and allies there to perform in a drag show, drum up publicity for it, then unleash fabulousness into the universe.
Along the way, they hear heart-wrenching stories, joyous stories, survivor stories, sad stories and infuriating stories, culminating in an empowering drag performance that can be parts happy, raunchy, poignant, sexy and always eye-popping (because there are still tons of sequins and enormous wigs). And they always come back to the importance of family — whether that’s biological or chosen or both, it’s all about that strength.
“You are the product of some strong-ass people.

The standout Selma, Ala., episode of “We’re Here” not only brings Bob the Drag Queen, Eureka and Shangela to the city, but also takes a deep dive into the history of the civil rights movement, examining the intersectionality and vulnerability.
During the episode, Bob the Drag Queen also pulls off one of the most iconic wig reveals in the history of drag — by hiding his 11-year-old niece inside his wig. As Bob dances to Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair,” the wig comes off and reveals his the young girl as his dancing sidekick.
It took Bob’s creative team to pull off the surprise, including costume designer Domino Couture, makeup artist Tyler Devlin and hairstylist Gloria.
Couture and Bob the Drag Queen (Christopher Caldwell) have known each other since to Season 8 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” But Couture says Bob has dreamed of pulling off this reveal for over ten years.

When “We’re Here” debuted in April 2020, the world was locked at home at the onset of the pandemic. The previous year, popular drag queens Bob the Drag Queen (Christopher Caldwell), Shangela (DJ Pierce), and Eureka had traveled across America helping members of the local LGBTQ+ community (and their allies) put on a show of visibility in their small towns. They crisscrossed the country from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to Twin Falls, Idaho.
