When Sienna Miller arrived on the set of Extrapolations for the first day of filming in October 2021, a Native American shaman came to bless the grounds. There were no printed signs directing her where to go, or stacks of paper scripts available for producers to scribble their notes in the margins. Instead, there were clothing racks filled with thrifted and vintage garments sustainably sourced by the costume department, water stations for refilling nonplastic bottles, compostable plates and utensils, and plant-based craft services. It was the greenest set the actress says she’s ever been on.

Years after “An Inconvenient Truth” rattled the world with the pressing reality of climate change, “Extrapolations” creator Scott Z. Burns chose to tackle the overwhelmingly large subject of climate through “human-size stories” in Apple TV+’s new drama series.
“It actually was sort of a revelation to realize that, instead of going big, you go small, and you try and identify the human-size stories where people encounter climate change,” Burns told TheWrap. “We thought about the big issues — like sea level rise, extreme heat [and] fires — and tried to drill down from those into a human story that could be entertaining and compelling … What does the love story look like in a world where sea level is changing? What does a thriller look like?”

Solution-based thinking was the name of the game on the second day of the annual Environmental Media Association Impact Summit, which featured sessions filled with searing insights and new ideas in the battle against climate change and environmental inequity.
First up was The Hollywood Reporter’s deputy editor Degen Pener, in conversation with Mustafa Santiago Ali, executive vice president of conservation and justice for the National Wildlife Federation. Titled “How Should the Media Discuss Eco-Disasters Such as The Norfolk Southern Train Derailment?” the talk touched on the importance of community-led change.
“Communities speak for themselves. Communities will let you know what they need,” said Ali, who was recently on the ground in East Palestine, Ohio, after a train carrying toxic chemicals derailed there on Feb. 3.
Though heartened by the increased coverage of eco-disasters by journalists, Ali encouraged media companies to be more transparent about the sources of their ad revenue.

It's not something any of us want to confront, but thanks to Apple TV+, climate change is at the forefront of a new prestige drama called "Extrapolations" — and the streamer has released the series' first trailer.
In the sneak peek, we are introduced to a world where some of our woes are solved — the trailer asserts that cancer has been cured — but others are only just beginning. Earth is now ravaged by the effects of climate change, and it is up to those of us left to try to find a way forward for human survival.
The series was written and directed by Scott Z. Burns (the writer of "Contagion" and director of "The Report"), and will unfold over an eight-episode season of interconnected stories. Its official synopsis reads:

In fact, this March will see the release of a new show, "Extrapolations," which will approach the subject of humanity's existence on earth in a more subdued, but still terrifying kind of way. Tonight, Hollywood’s top writers came together for the Writers Guild of America Awards, which honored the finest achievements in film and television writing.
On the film side, the nominees were actually quite different from what you’ll see at the Oscars next week. This The Handmaid’s Tale review contains spoilers.
There’s really no such thing as understatement on this season of The Handmaid’s Tale, is there? This episode, and the ones preceding it, have played out at a deafeningly high emotional volume. Every speech is emphatic, every exchange is urgent and tear-filled, every decision is literally life or death. It’s a good job that Elisabeth Moss, Samira Wiley and the others are able to pull off this level of sustained intensity, because with a lesser cast or less controlled direction, the high drama could easily turn into melodrama.
If not for the judicious use of pre-Gilead flashbacks as tension-releasing valves, this episode’s force might have been too much to take. That’s always been this show’s natural habitat: teetering on the edge of too-much-to-take, but generally keeping its balance. The scenes of June, Moira and Luke as twenty-somethings negotiating...

The Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won-penned South Korean class thriller “Parasite” won Best Original Screenplay and Taika Waititi’s Nazi satire “Jojo Rabbit” won Best Adapted Screenplay at the Writers Guild Awards Saturday night.

The Writers Guild of America revealed its winners for the 72nd annual edition of its awards, which were held simultaneously at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and at the Edison Ballroom in New York City on February 1. About 15,000 WGA members vote on the best writing of the prior calendar year in an array of genres.
But beware Oscar predictors: Often a few film scripts nominated for an Academy Award are deemed ineligible. Only screenplays written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for the WGA Awards. That accounts for its relatively low success rate at previewing the eventual Oscar nominees compared to the other guilds.
Among those ineligible for consideration this year are some of the leading Oscar contenders, including the original screenplays for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Pain and Glory.” The former is by Quentin Tarantino,...

Many awards pundits see the Writers Guild as a bellwether for the Oscars, though there’s a catch: oftentimes the Oscar nominees are not eligible at the guild because they aren’t written under its strict guidelines. Thus, Oscar nominee “The Favourite” was not eligible at WGA as this foreign production did not go through the lengthy process of proving its eligibility.

Last year’s Producers Guild Awards told us which movie — “The Shape of Water” — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact 20 of the previous winners of this important prize have then gone on to Best Picture victories.

The Producers Guild of America hands out its awards on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019. That is three days before the academy announces the nominations for the Oscars. While the PGA ceremony is not televised, it is an important stop on the road to the Oscars.
The PGA Awards has an enviable track record at presaging the eventual Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards. The guild and the academy have agreed on 20 of the most recent 29 Best Picture champs, including last year’s double winner. “The Shape of Water.”
Since both groups expanded the Best Picture category, the PGA has predicted 70 of the 81 of the Best Picture nominees over the past nine years. Last year the guild went seven for nine in previewing the Oscars line-up: “Call Me by Your Name,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird,” “The Post,” “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The other four guild nominees were “The Big Sick,...

Now we know what the most popular movies are vying for Oscars this year: The Producers Guild of America’s motion picture and television nominations went mainstream. Winners will be revealed at the 30th Annual Producers Guild Awards, to be held January 19 at the Beverly Hilton.
Many of these films will wind up on the the final list of Oscar nominations to be revealed on January 22; the eventual winners are here as well. That does not mean that “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “A Quiet Place,” or “Crazy Rich Asians” will land Best Picture nominations, but it is a sign of strength and popularity. Oscar voters tend to take degree of difficulty in production into consideration, and may lean into big box office hits this year.
(Left off the PGA list are long-shot Best Picture contenders “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” and “First Man.”)

The HBO comedy “Barry” is having a great day. First it reaped three Golden Globe nominations and then it earned another three bids at the Writers Guild of America Awards. At the WGA, it competes for Best Comedy Series writing as well as for an individual episode and for the catch-all Best New Series award.
For the comedy series award, “Barry” faces off against reigning Emmy champ “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as well as “Atlanta,” “Glow” and “The Good Place.” “Barry” is the only comedy up for the new series award alongside the dramas “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Homecoming,” “Pose” and “Succession.”
Of those four, only “Succession” made it into Best Drama Series where it competes against the final season of “The Americans,” season 4 of “Better Call Saul” and the sophomore editions of “The Crown” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
The WGA Awards winners will be revealed on Feb.
