The story of a cat and his friends. Flow is an animated film made by the Latvian filmmaker named Gints Zilbalodis, his second feature after making Away (in 2019) which was a fable about loneliness. He's also known for many other animated short films that debuted online before he started moving into making these features. Whereas Away is about loneliness, Flow is about friendship, companionship, and loyalty. The title is once again a literal title because the story is about how we meet and befriend different people as life flows along, taking us to unknown destinations and through many trials & tribulations. Much like Away, the story is a metaphor for life as a human being, this time told through an adventure featuring different animals in a strange world. It's entirely dialogue free and features Zilbalodis' distinct cel-shading animation style, more rudimentary than Pixar or DreamWorks or Sony but still animated with heaps of emotion and compassion.

Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired North American rights for Gints Zilbalodis’ animated adventure film “Flow,” which premiered in Un Certain Regard at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
“We were so excited to see what Gints Zilbalodis would do after his surprising debut feature ‘Away’ in which he did almost all of the work single-handedly,” said Sideshow and Janus Films in a joint statement. “‘Flow’ did not disappoint. It’s one of the most remarkably original works we have seen in some time. We know audiences of all ages will embrace this tremendously moving and heartwarming story, and we can’t wait to bring Gints Zilbalodis’ work to a much wider audience across North America.”
According to an official logline, in “Flow,” “the world seems to be coming to an end, teeming with the vestiges of a human presence. Cat is a solitary animal, but as his home is devastated by a great flood,...

Animated feature “Flow,” selected for Cannes’ Un Certain Regard, has debuted an exclusive image and it’s purr-fect.
In the dialogue-free film, a flood is coming, quickly devouring everything on its way: including Cat’s home. There is no human in sight, but luckily, he finds refuge on a boat full of other animals. Together, they silently sail through the cat-astrophe.
Directed by Latvia’s Gints Zilbalodis, “Flow” is produced by Sacrebleu Productions, Dream Well Studio and Take Five. Charades handles sales.
“All the films I’ve made before didn’t have any dialogues either. I think it’s my strength: telling stories through images rather than words,” said the man in question, admitting that “Flow” was always supposed to be “visually driven.”
“All the characters are animals and we wanted them to behave like animals, to keep it grounded this way. It’s not a Disney film. I can...

The Most Precious of Cargoes, the first animated feature from Oscar-winning French director Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist), will open this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The feature is a 2D animated adaptation of the best-selling book by French author Jean-Claude Grumberg. Set during World War II, it tells the story of a French Jewish family deported to Auschwitz. On the train to the death camp, in a desperate gesture, the father throws one of his baby twins out into the snow, where he’s discovered by a childless Polish couple living deep in the forest.
Hazanavicius presented the film as a work-in-progress at Annecy two years ago. French actor Jean-Louis Trintignant narrates the film with voice acting from Dominique Blanc, Denis Podalydès, and Grégory Gadebois. Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water) composed the score. Animation is from 3.0 Studio – formerly Prima Linea — the group behind the...

The animation for the film was hand-drawn by Abreu and a reduced team who spent four years in a mountain village in Brazil. Abreu collaborated with senior Brazilian animator Sandro Cleuzo.

Before YouTube, there was Newgrounds. It was a formative experience to many young internet users, who formed a burgeoning community around the amateur solo artists who spent thousands of hours perfecting their Flash animations. Granted, the platform had its fair share of trash, but its best content was truly special – a testament to the creative power of an individual and their computer.
With Away, Latvian filmmaker Gints Zilbalodis has taken this humble sentiment to a whole new level of craftsmanship, serving as writer, director, producer, composer, cinematographer and editor. To complete a film in these circumstances is an accomplishment; to make one this good is remarkable.
It begins with a nameless boy landing on a mysterious island, his parachute caught in the gnarled branches of a dead tree. After regaining consciousness, a colossal figure lurches towards him. This ghostly shadow exudes a lazy menace, yet its intentions aren’t clear.

An inspirational work of do-it-yourself computer animation that suggests the sky’s-the-limit potential of the medium for anyone with big ideas and a boundless amount of time on his hands (plus access to Maya or an equivalent CG super-tool), “Away” represents more than three years of imagination and labor by 25-year-old Latvian prodigy Gints Zilbalodis, who earns every aspect of his “a film by” credit: He conceived, designed, animated and scored — and what a score! — this hypnotic hero’s journey, which treats Joseph Campbell’s monomyth as a kind of waking dream.
“Away” opens with its young protagonist dangling by his parachute from a tree in an otherwise barren landscape, which turns out to be the remote end of a primordial island where physics follows a slightly different set of rules. We don’t know how this kid got there or where he’s going, but the giant black colossus lumbering toward him spells trouble.

After earning acclaim for his short films, Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis embarked on his first feature animation with a crew of precisely one. The dialogue-free Away has now been touring film festivals to great acclaim and will finally get a release later this month via Subliminal Films. Ahead of the release, the first trailer has now landed which shows off the adventure story of a boy and his journeys across an exotic island as he’s trailed by a mysterious dark spirit.
Jared Mobarak said in our Fantasia review, “A one-man show on-screen and behind it, Gints Zilbalodis’ Away is an obvious labor of love. "Hypnotizing." Subliminal Films has debuted an official Us trailer for the indie animated feature Away, a dialogue-free feature made entirely single-handily by Latvian animator / filmmaker Gints Zilbalodis. You may recognize the name, as he has been making award-winning short films for years (visit his Vimeo) and this is his first feature that he made himself. Away is about a boy and a little bird who find themselves on a journey across a strange island trying to get back home. It's not easy to make a film without any dialogue in it that is actually worth watching, but this one has appeared at numerous prestigious film festivals including Annecy, Fantasia, and Sitges over the last year. If you're into experimental animation, this is a must watch. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Gints Zilbalodis' Away, direct from Subliminal Films' YouTube: Told without any dialogue, Away follows a young boy after a mysterious crash landing,...

All of the winning titles at the Romanian festival's 14th edition hail from Europe. The Animest International Animation Film Festival (4-13 October), the most popular festival organised in Romania's capital, Bucharest, has announced the winning titles of its 14th edition. Twenty-five-year-old Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis' Away (Latvia) won the Best Feature Award. The jury – consisting of Jürgen Hagler, the director of Austrian festival Ars Electronica, French director Sarah Van Den Boom and Estonian director Kaspar Jancis – favoured Away for its “balance between aesthetics and story”. Animest has been an Oscar-qualifying festival since 2017, which means that the winner of the Short Film competition is automatically considered for an Oscar nomination in the Best Animated Short Film category. This year, the winner was Tomek Popakul's Acid Rain (Poland). The jury, consisting of Canadian artist Robert Valley, French producer Richard Van Den Boom and Danish animator Sara Koppel, justified their...

An dialogue-free seventy five minute animated movie entirely created by one guy from Latvia might not seem like the outline for any film to get made, let alone watch. But that is the exact description of Away and it is a fascinating piece of work.
The directors story is an interesting one in itself. At only 25 he had made seven short films before Away, six of them in animation. He then spent three and a half years, pretty much seven days a week, creating his first full feature. After winning several awards it is now touring the world across festivals and will hopefully get some kind of wide release.
But back to the movie. We first meet a boy, who has found himself in a strange world, and with the help of his only ‘friend’ – a small bird – to help him get home.

A one-man show on-screen and behind it, Gints Zilbalodis’ Away is an obvious labor of love. Opening like a videogame wherein our lead is found dangling by parachute from a tree, we haven’t a clue about his surroundings and neither does he. Before he can release himself and begin a search for answers, however, there arrives a lumbering behemoth on the horizon with dead eyes laser-focused upon him. Maybe it’s a friend or maybe it’s his end—the curiosity and hope for the better allowing the boy to remain still despite a palpable fear of the unknown. Only when it closes its hands around him does the void of its clench reveal dread was the correct response. Acting fast, he smartly releases the chute and runs.

Annecy, France — Fulfilling expectations, Jeremy Clapin’s “I Lost My Body, the subject of one of the highest-profile Netflix deals at this year’s Cannes, won this Saturday the Annecy Festival’s top Cristal Award of best feature plus, in a relatively rare Annecy double whammy, the festival’s Audience Award.
The first was expected, the second a sign of the broad appeal of a movie whose premise – a severed hand desperately attempting to be reunited with its body – seems a highly unlikely point of departure for a movie of any kind.
Hailed as a masterpiece by many critics “I Lost My Body” was described by Peter Debruge in his Variety review as “one of the strangest ideas ever committed to animation — a severed hand seeks answers,” which “ultimately proves to be one of the medium’s most profound offerings.”

Somewhere between Hayao Miyazaki and Terrence Malick lies Away, a gorgeously made minimalist cartoon that’s long on beauty and breathtaking scenery, if somewhat short on traditional narrative.
Indeed, like Malick’s recent efforts to create emotion out of sheer aesthetic prowess, one-man-band Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis uses 3D animation to highlight the power of natural wonders and the sway they hold over a young man trapped on a mystical island straight out of Ponyo, Princess Mononoke or other classics of the Japanese master.
