When Wattpad Webtoon Studios was preparing to release the drama “Float” this year, author Kate Marchant asked for a little help from her fans. The Lionsgate film was based on her story, and now she presented three movie posters to her followers, asking them to pick their favorite.
“I can feel your readers shifting in their seats,” Aron Levitz, president of Wattpad Webtoon Studios, says with a laugh. “All those creative execs are going, ‘Wait a minute, people knew about it before it went out? Are you sure that’s Ok?’”
For Levitz, the answer is a resounding yes. His company is shaking up the traditional approach to creating film and TV adaptations by putting the power in the hands of fans.
Just last month, the third movie in the “Through My Window” series, adapted from Wattpad author Ariana Godoy’s webnovels, dominated the Netflix film charts, amassing 14 million views...

Exclusive: Taylor Zakhar Perez, the breakout star of Amazon’s hit rom-com Red, White & Royal Blue, has signed with Paradigm for representation.
In the film from director Matthew Lopez, which adapts the New York Times bestselling novel from Casey McQuiston, Perez plays Alex Claremont-Diaz, son of the American President (Uma Thurman), whose feud with a British prince (Nicholas Galitzine) threatens to drive a wedge in U.S./British relations. Subsequently, the pair are forced into a staged truce that sparks something deeper.
Produced by Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schecter, the film premiered in August 2023 and became the No. 1 movie globally on Prime Video in its premiere weekend, remaining the platform’s most-watched film worldwide for the first three weeks after its release. Touted by Amazon as spurring “a huge surge in new Prime membership signups,” the film is also now among Prime Video’s top three most-watched romantic comedies of all time.

With its seventh edition coming to an end, Venice’s Book Adaptation Rights Market (Barm) is already eyeing the future. The three-day event – taking place during the Italian fest – is now recognized as the third most important annual rendezvous by the publishers, states Pascal Diot, head of industry sidebar Venice Production Bridge.
“It’s starting to be ‘the’ event for the publishers to attend,” agrees Vpb’s Chiara Marin.
“Before, I would go to all these book fairs and when I would mention Venice Film Festival, people would go: ‘What are you doing here?,’ ” she laughs.
As the demand for adapted stories increases, even more publishers and literary agencies were invited this year, including Taipei’s Dala Publishing, Emily Books Agency and The Grayhawk Agency. Due to popular demand, the event also decided to focus on comics and graphic novels, with the likes of Casterman, Glénat, Nathan, Tunué, Astiberri Ediciones,...

He’s seen a lot. At Berlanti Prods., veteran programming executive David Madden served as executive producer of HBO Max hit “The Flight Attendant” as well as stalker romance “You.” As president at Fox Entertainment he helped launch “The Shield;” while overseeing programming at AMC Networks, his oversight included “The Walking Dead,” “Better Call Saul,” and “Killing Eve.” He even won an Emmy as executive producer for HBO’s 2004 TV movie “Something the Lord Made.” And so for his next act… he’s running an internet studio that believes that stories posted online by anyone could be made into the next hit.

“The Kissing Booth” producer Andrew Cole-Bulgin has departed Komixx — the production company behind all three instalments of the hit Netflix movies — to join forces with “The Millionaire Matchmaker” star Patti Stanger on a new scripted project.
The crossover drama series, in which a young dating expert from a Jewish family of matchmakers navigates 1970s New York City and New Jersey to turn her family trade into an empire, has strong auto-biographical resonance for Stanger, who is executive producer and star of Bravo’s “Millionaire Matchmaker.”
“Every dream has the ability to become a reality, it just needs someone to have that vision and belief of what it can become. When I met Andrew I knew he was that person. Like many others I loved Netflix’s ‘Kissing Booth’ movies. Who doesn’t? But it was more than that: I was truly inspired by Andrew’s ability to understand universal experiences...

How many movies does it take to tell a story about high school senior Elle Evans (Joey King) trying to decide whether to honor her friendship to lifelong bestie Lee (Joel Courtney) or break the “rules” by dating his smoking-hot older brother, Noah (Jacob Elordi)? If you’re Netflix — the content factory that milked “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” for its full trilogy potential — then the answer is three, obviously. Except the makers of “The Kissing Booth” didn’t have a solid book series to fall back on, nor a compelling romantic rivalry to stretch across multiple movies.
What they did have was the data to suggest audiences wanted more. I too wanted more — less of the same, but a little substance for a change. How great would it be if Elle found enough self-respect to pursue her own dreams, rather than deciding her future according to which...

What I most appreciate about the Kissing Booth rom-com trilogy is that it’s savvy enough to know when to indulge in outlandish adolescent wish-fulfillment and brave enough to depict its teen protagonists as realistically drunk, horny revelers. Based on the book series by Beth Reekles, who was a teenager herself when she imagined what would happen if a spunky video gamer finally grew boobs and ended up seducing the high school bad boy, the films have no compunctions about showcasing underage pleasure. Exclusive: WME and Anonymous Content have signed young actor Taylor Zakhar Perez, who is coming off of a breakout role on the Vince Marcello-helmed hit Netflix franchise The Kissing Booth.
Based on the YA novel by Beth Reekles, the teen rom-com follows the romantic adventures of Elle, played by Joey King, her bad-boy boyfriend Noah (Jacob Elordi), and her best friend Lee (Joel Courtney). Perez first appeared in last year’s Kissing Booth 2, in the role of Marco, a handsome, charismatic new classmate who complicates Elle’s love journey.
Netflix reported that The Kissing Booth 2 was viewed by more than 65 million people in the first four weeks on the platform.
Perez is set to return for the third installment, which will debut this summer. It picks up where the second one left off. It’s the summer before Elle heads to college, and she has a secret decision to make.

Great news, Kissing Booth fans! Not only is a third movie in the works, but The Kissing Booth 3 has already been filmed and is getting ready to go for next year's release date. The third movie in the popular Netflix rom-com series actually finished filming last year, so it won't be affected by any pandemic shutdowns.
During Netflix's #TKBFanFest live stream on July 26, stars Joey King and Joel Courtney made the big announcement. Apparently, they secretly filmed The Kissing Booth 3 at the same time that they filmed The Kissing Booth 2, which is out now. Although the announcement was abrupt, it's not entirely unexpected - after all, the To All the Boys I've Loved Before series used the same filming strategy, filming P.S. I Still Love You simultaneously with the upcoming third and final movie, Always and Forever, Lara Jean. The only difference is that they were totally public...

Just a few days after “The Kissing Booth 2” debuted on Netflix, the streaming service announced a third movie in the teen romance franchise is in the works.
And there’s more good news for Elle (Joey King) and Noah (Jacob Elordi) fans: “The Kissing Booth 3” was secretly shot at the same time as the sequel, so filming is already complete. It’s currently in post-production and will premiere on Netflix in 2021. The entire cast — including King, Joel Courtney, Elordi, Taylor Zakhar Perez and Molly Ringwald — will return for the follow-up.
“It was the hardest secret to keep,” Courtney said Sunday during a live YouTube event with the cast .
Despite negative reviews from critics, “The Kissing Booth” series has been wildly popular among teen audiences at Netflix. After the first film was released in 2018, Netflix reported it was one of its most-rewatched original films that year.

“The Kissing Booth 2,” the second installment in Netflix’s wildly popular franchise, is currently No. 1 on the streamer’s viewing charts. Riding high off the popularity of the new film and the 2018 original, both directed by Vince Marcello, Netflix has given the go-ahead on a third movie. But perhaps the most exciting piece of news, as reported by Deadline, is that “The Kissing Booth 3” has already finished filming after shooting quietly alongside “Kissing Booth 2” last year in South Africa. Marcello is reported to be currently in post-production on the film, which Netflix will launch sometime in 2021. Netflix confirmed the news to IndieWire.

From its auspicious beginning as a novel written by then-15-year-old author Beth Reekles on the self-publish site Wattpad, to its wildly popular film debut on Netflix, “The Kissing Booth” has proven itself a hit. It spoke to its target audience without speaking down to them, telling the story of a young woman confronted with the challenge of choosing between a longterm relationship with her male best friend or a budding romance with his hotter older brother. Though its imaginatively named sequel “The Kissing Booth 2” hits similar beats, themes and emotional touchstones, it delivers a few refreshing details by giving the heroine more agency in her quest to find happiness — yet not quite enough to justify its interminable run time.

Screen Queensland, the Queensland state’s film support body, has struck a deal with Canada’s Wattpad to develop stories. Wattpad uses global audience insights and machine learning to find and develop hit projects for screens.
Screen Queensland and Wattpad will select up to three successful stories from the Wattpad platform and ask Queensland screen industry creatives to submit their ‘take’. Writers will provide a pitch outlining how they plan to translate the story to screen. The winning three may then move into further development with the input and feedback of the Wattpad platform audience over the following 12 months. The intention is to identify a project to secure marketplace backing and achieve production in Queensland.
Wattpad currently works with companies like Sony Pictures Television, eOne, Erik Feig’s Picturestart, Bavaria Fiction, Mediaset, Lagardere Studios, Wise Entertainment and Turner LatAm’s Particular Crowd. The company has nearly 50 projects in development, including...

“The Kissing Booth 2,” the sequel to Netflix’s popular teen rom-com, will debut on the streaming service this summer. The follow-up — again starring Joey King, Joel Courtney and Jacob Elordi — drops on Netflix on July 24.
King shared the news Thursday night during a live event on YouTube, where she was joined by fellow cast members to share secrets about the upcoming movie.
“The Kissing Booth” became a breakout hit among teen audiences when it premiered in 2018. At the time, Netflix reported that it was one of its most-rewatched original films that year. Though Netflix rarely provides statistics in context, the company’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos said “The Kissing Booth” was “one of the most-watched movies in the country, and maybe in the world.”
The original film follows King’s character, a high schooler who runs into trouble when she starts to fall for her best friend’s older brother.

The latest company to join Wattpad’s list of collaborators is Wise Entertainment, the independent studio behind the Emmy-nominated series East Los High.
With Wise, Wattpad will develop Portuguese-language Wattpad stories as TV series and films for audiences in Brazil. This partnership marks Wattpad’s first major development deal in Latin America.
Wise Entertainment is known for content that tells stories for and by underserved audience. They also run an IP incubator in the country and will work with Wattpad to develop standout teen and Ya projects for Brazilian viewers with local writers and producers. This deal, like other Wattpad international pacts, allows Wise to tap into Wattpad’s mix of creative expertise and Story DNA Machine Learning Technology.

The Kissing Booth took over Netflix last year with an addictive storm of teen rom-com drama, complete with an angsty reformed bad boy played by newcomer Jacob Elordi. The Netflix original, which seems to be Gen Z's stab at John Hughes's body of work, gained a bit of cult-level momentum. The dramedy came out in mid-May, and instantly had fans clamoring for a second movie . . . pronto. Thankfully Netflix has answered the call and announced in February 2019 that a sequel is officially on the way.
So, how is a sequel feasible, story-wise? Let's take a look at the movie's ending and the source material, Beth Reekles's young adult novel of the same name.
The movie itself has an open-ended conclusion. After dropping off Noah at the airport, Elle ponders over whether or not things will work out between them once he goes to college. This ending calls for a follow-up...

While eliciting skepticism from critics, Netflix's The Kissing Booth has effectively charmed teen audiences everywhere with the easy chemistry between its leads and its danceable, breezy soundtrack. Fan or foe, there's really no denying its overwhelming popularity. The novel from which the movie was adapted also reached cult-level status shortly after its debut. In fact, Beth Reekles, the young Welsh author behind the book, is something of an internet sensation.
At age 15, the South Wales native wrote The Kissing Booth and uploaded the story onto a writing platform called Wattpad. The novel was a hit and accumulated 19 million reads. A few years later, Random House UK picked it up and offered her a book deal. Since then, she has published other young adult reads like Rolling Dice, Out of Tune, and Cwtch Me If You Can.

The Kissing Booth has become one of the internet's latest teen obsessions. Like many a sun-drenched soap such as The O.C. or 90210, the movie is set in an upscale Southern California neighborhood. Featuring ritzy mansions, golden beaches, and even the notorious Hollywood sign, The Kissing Booth gives the impression that its shooting took place entirely in Los Angeles. Director Vince Marcello, however, shot most of Netflix's teen comedy film in Cape Town, South Africa.

Netflix might be trying to corner the market on big-budget spectacles from some of Hollywood’s hottest names — from the $90 million “Bright” to its multi-picture deal with Adam Sandler and Martin Scorsese’s much-hyped “The Irishman” — but the streaming giant has quietly planted its stake in a less ambitious place: romantic comedies. So far this year, Netflix has released six original films that are classified as rom-coms, with at least three more on the way before the year closes out. And it’s on to something here: 2017’s “A Christmas Prince” was such a smash hit for the outfit that it has already prepped a holiday sequel.
Netflix’s newest hit-in-the-making, “The Kissing Booth,” is kicking up similar attention. Unfortunately, the high school-set rom-com is a sexist and regressive look at relationships that highlights the worst impulses of the genre. Netflix isn’t new to the sub-genre of teen rom-coms,...
