Astral Projection, the production company set up by Oscar winner Rachel Weisz and British executive producer Polly Stokes has signed a new first-look and development deal with Fremantle.
The three-year deal will see Fremantle become the primary home for all TV and film projects for Astral Projection, which co-produced “Dead Ringers,” Amazon’s six-part psychological thriller in which Weisz played both lead roles in a gender-swapped reimagining of the 1988 David Cronenberg film. Stokes, a former creative executive at Film4, and Weisz have a long-standing relationship and are building a slate of projects with Rebecca Servadio as Astral’s literary consultant.
The deal was spearheaded by Fremantle CEO of global drama Christian Vesper and COO of global drama Seb Shorr. It was negotiated by Fran Denny, Fremantle’s VP legal and business affairs of global drama, and James Kay and Jessica Hudson for Sheridans on behalf of Astral Projection.

Forget all about Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Rafe Spall and co. That lot are yesterday’s chip paper. The stars of the 2011 One Day film have been superseded by this new bunch, now bringing David Nicholls’ hit 2009 romance novel to life for a new 14-episodes Netflix series. Adapted by Wild Rose and Three Girls screenwriter Nicole Taylor, One Day is a bittersweet love story set across two decades. It’s the story of Emma and Dexter, whose first night together at their university graduation sparks almost two decades of will-they-won’t-they romance.

Some people take making a cup of coffee seriously. Throwing grounds into a K-cup simply won’t do. The beans need to be fresh and ground to perfect grit, with the presentation being as important as taste, temperature, and caffeination. If you ask Netflix‘s Chief Action Officer Arnold Schwarzenegger to make you a cup, prepare yourself for a jolt that will give you the energy you need to save the world and then some. In Netflix’s new Heart of Stone promo, Schwarzenegger and Gal Gadot compare coffee-making techniques while discussing the Wonder Woman action star’s new film.
In today’s Heart of Stone promo, Gal Gadot spots Arnold Schwarzenegger injecting as much action as possible into every cup of joe served at Netflix HQ. After a friendly greeting, Gadot witnesses Arnold’s explosive coffee-making methods and figures she should step in before someone gets hurt. Gadot quickly whips up a fresh cup,...

Netflix is really keen on developing the next big James Bond/ Mission: Impossible-style franchise. The Grey Man apparently did pretty big business, as did Red Notice and Extraction, and now the streamer is again stepping into the espionage game with Heart of Stone. The film stars Gal Gadot as secret agent Rachel Stone, who, according to the official synopsis, “is the only woman who stands between her powerful, global, peace-keeping organization and the loss of its most valuable — and dangerous — asset.”
During their Tudum event, Netflix released a teaser/sizzle reel for the film, which is being directed by Wild Rose/ The Aeronauts director Tom Harper. In it, we get a glimpse at the “grounded” action, which seems very much in the mode of Atomic Blonde or John Wick. Exclusive: Netflix has prevailed in a competitive auction for worldwide rights on Heart of Stone, the espionage thriller developed by Skydance Media with Gal Gadot starring. Tom Harper, who helmed The Aeronauts and Wild Rose, will direct a film that aspires to hatch a female-centric franchise with the action and global scale of films like Mission: Impossible and 007.
It is the second major deal with a streamer this week for a Skydance-generated tentpole-sized film, after Amazon acquired the Chris Pratt starrer The Tomorrow War.
The deal brings Gadot back into the Netflix fold. The actress, who just opened in Wonder Woman 1984 for WarnerMedia, will star with Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds in Netflix tentpole Red Notice, the Rawson Marshall Thurber-directed heist film.
Deadline revealed Skydance Media film in December, when David Ellison and team at Skydance signed an eight-figure deal for Gadot to star in Heart of Stone.

Rex Harrison famously endured getting urinated upon by real sheep during the filming of the 1967 musical “Doctor Dolittle,” while the 2020 version of “Dolittle” sees Robert Downey Jr. removing bagpipes from a CG dragon’s rectum before receiving a faceful of gastric wind as a reward.
Whichever actor had it worse, it’s the audience who loses. Downey’s revival of Hugh Lofting’s legendary loquacious veterinarian, one who can communicate with any member of any species, splats onto the screen like horse dung, with few laughs and no charm. Even the actor’s legendary charisma, which this project sorely needed, gets tamped down by making a depressed widower the hero of a kiddie movie and by having that widower mumble in an accent that’s possibly Welsh, perhaps Irish, maybe Scottish, but definitely the enemy of comedy.

Twas the night before Oscar nominations and all through the ballroom, the Barker Hanger was buzzing as critics mixed and mingled with A-listers inside the 25th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday night. Big winners Life Achievement winner Eddie Murphy, #SeeHer honoree Kristen Bell, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Bong Joon Ho played to the audience in the room and at home with top-notch speeches but Variety was inside the ballroom bringing you everything you didn’t see on television.
Half of the fun of the award shows is eating and drinking with the stars. “Joker,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “The Irishman” have come out on top in the nominations for the 2020 British Academy of Film and Television’s Film Awards.
“Joker” had 11 noms, and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Irishman” scored 10 noms apiece. Off the back of its Globes success, “1917” landed nine.
BAFTA was quickly criticized on social channels for an overwhelmingly white set of nominees. Only white actors were nominated in the supporting and main categories. “Film is an incredible medium to tell the stories of our society and our world, but we need people of all backgrounds to be working in the industry to enable us to do that,” BAFTA chief Amanda Berry told the BBC. “If you look at the number of female noms this year it’s well over a third, well up from what it was, say, two years ago, but it’s still not good enough.

Arts body Creative Scotland has named Iain Munro its new chief executive after 15 months in the role on an acting basis.
Munro was previously deputy chief executive but took on the top role in July 2018 after Janet Archer stepped down. This followed a parliamentary enquiry into funding applications, which found that the process at the public body had fallen below expectations.

Robert Downey Jr. electrifies one of literature’s most enduring characters in a vivid reimagining of the classic tale of the man who could talk to animals: Dolittle.
In theaters January 17, 2020, watch the first trailer from Universal Pictures.
This looks fabulous and Rdj was born to play the character.
There have been other cinematic versions. The classic 1967 movie starred Rex Harrison as John Dolittle and was a Best Picture nominee.
The musical film directed by Richard Fleischer also featured Samantha Eggar, Anthony Newley and Richard Attenborough. It was adapted by Leslie Bricusse from the novel series by Hugh Lofting. It primarily fused three of the books The Story of Doctor Dolittle, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle, and Doctor Dolittle’s Circus.
Check out this clip.
The movie from 1998 starred Eddie Murphy. Check it out if you get a chance.

The first trailer and poster have been revealed for Robert Downey Jr.’s upcoming film Dolittle, which is a reimaging of the classic Dr. Dolittle. The film comes from Universal Pictures, but it looks and feels like the kind of animal adventure movie that Disney would make.
This will be the actor’s first movie to be released after retiring from Marvel with Avengers: Endgame. Downey Jr. and his creative team certainly ended up doing something very grand and different with this property. As you’ll see, this is going to be a swashbuckling adventure, and I was not expecting that. It certainly looks like the kind of movie that will entertain audiences.
The film also has a great supporting cast of actors that includes Jessie Buckley, Harry Collett, Tom Holland (Dog), Rami Malek (Gorilla), Octavia Spencer (Duck), Kumail Nanjiani (Ostrich), John Cena (Polar Bear), and Emma Thompson (Parrot). Other stars include Antonio Banderas,...

Marvel Cinematic Universe master Robert Downey Jr. revives one of literature’s most enduring characters in director Stephen Gaghan’s reimagining of the classic tale of Dr. Dolittle, a man who can communicate with animals. Below, check out the first trailer for “Dolittle,” which opens January 17, 2020 from Universal Pictures.
Here’s the film’s synopsis: “After losing his wife seven years earlier, the eccentric Dr. John Dolittle (Downey), famed doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria’s England, hermits himself away behind the high walls of Dolittle Manor with only his menagerie of exotic animals for company. But when the young queen (Jessie Buckley) falls gravely ill, a reluctant Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure, regaining his wit and courage as he crosses old adversaries and discovers wondrous creatures.”

Though the past decade or so of his career has seen him fighting alongside the likes of Thor, Captain America, the Hulk and more in order to protect our planet from all kinds of enemies, Robert Downey Jr.’s schedule has finally cleared up and the actor is wasting no time in moving onto some non-Marvel projects.
We haven’t seen him in a role other than Iron Man in quite a while, but that’ll soon change as Rdj will be back on our screens early next year in The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle. Or at least, that’s what it was originally titled. Now, however, according to the film’s first trailer – which you can catch up above – it’ll go by just Dolittle. And yes, this is the same Dolittle who talks to animals that we already met in the 1967 original and then again in the 1998 remake with Eddie Murphy.

Written by Nicole Taylor (Three Girls) and directed by Tom Harper (The Scouting Book for Boys), Wild Rose tells the raw tale of Rose-Lynn (Jessie Buckley), a young Glaswegian woman with troubles she has yet to deal with, who seeks a life in Nashville among the Country Music scene. Unable to claw her way out of the life she finds herself in, she finds herself desperately looking towards a world she feels unable to reach.
This is a relatable and rough-around-the-edges story of finding yourself and coming to terms with life and all its torn pages and sharp corners. Rose-Lynn is troubled and immature, unsure of how to handle her children, the relationship with her mother, Marion (Julie Walters), or how to deal with life. She...

Earlier this year, Tom Harper’s Wild Rose arrived in the U.S., giving a strong showcase for Jessie Buckley. The director’s second film of 2019 will arrive this December and he’s expanding his scope a great deal. The Aeronauts tells the story fo daredevil balloon pilot Amelia Wren (Felicity Jones) who teams up with pioneering meteorologist James Glaisher (Eddie Redmayne) to break records in the sky.
Set to come to Tiff, it’ll likely bow at Telluride this weekend ahead of getting a release in theaters on December 6 and Prime Video on December 20. The film finds Jones and Redmayne reuniting after The Theory of Everything, this time for a film which hopefully has a bit more of a spark. See the first trailer and poster below.

While “The Lion King” dominates the larger world of studio releases, A24’s “The Farewell” is king of the indie jungle. Lulu Wang’s acclaimed story of a granddaughter’s return to China for a special event expanded on its second weekend as impressively as an award-season prime-time contender. Commanding that response in July suggests a not only a huge interest in its subject, but a hunger from the arthouse audience for a film to support. None of this was guaranteed, or even likely, after nabbing major acclaim at Sundance.

Tom Harper’s Wild Rose is a film whose fixation on authenticity is directly at odds with its own craft. A corrective to the recent spate of self-absorbed superstar narratives, this is an underdog-musician story that’s appealingly as much about responsibility as sex and drugs, even as it’s repeatedly hamstrung by overly sentimental direction– a saccharine tone all the more disappointing given the strength of an alternately brittle and soulful script from TV veteran Nicole Taylor.
With cowboy boots high enough for Dolly Parton, pipes like Loretta Lynn, and a chip on her shoulder a mile wide from a half-lifetime of bad choices, the crimson haired Rose-Lynn (meteoric star Jessie Buckley) is the picture of Country’s outlaw spirit. In house arrest after being picked up for a less-than-legal delivery job, she’s now poorly acclimating to her old life as a mother of young son and daughter.

After several weeks of disappointing debuts, this weekend should see things turn around as Disney and Pixar unveil Toy Story 4 to what will be one of the largest debuts for an animated feature ever and UA Releasing's Child's Play remake is also looking like it will generate a solid debut over the three-day. Otherwise, Lionsgate's release of the Summit actioner Anna is looking like a lightweight performer at the lower end of the weekend top ten if not potentially falling outside altogether. The weekend's #1 film is a no-brainer. Toy Story 4 has already generated rave reviews, scoring a 98% on RottenTomatoes and an 83 on Metacritic, to go along with record-breaking pre-sale figures, which Fandango.com reported outperformed sales for last year's Incredibles 2, which delivered a record $182.6 million opening, going on to become the only animated film to not only top $500 million at the domestic box office, but it...

After an incredible start to the summer season last month, June is a bit lighter for acclaimed and/or promising releases, but there’s still a handful of worthwhile options. While we can’t muster up much excitement for the fourth installment of an animated franchise and our writers were mixed on some recent festival favorites finally arriving, we have a pared-down list of ten recommendations to seek out.

Which, considering her career, seems appropriate.
