After exploring the American frontier in Andrew Haigh’s Lean on Pete, Charlie Plummer returns to the terrain with Luke Gilford’s directorial debut National Anthem. Premiering at last year’s SXSW, the film follows a construction worker who joins a community of queer rodeo performers searching for their own version of the American dream. While working on a ranch in the Southwest, they contend with the undeniable forces of nature, family and love. Also starring Eve Lindley and Mason Alexander Park, the first trailer has now arrived ahead of a June 12 release from Variance Films.
Jake Kring-Schreifels said in his review, “National Anthem is an offshoot of Gilford’s 2020 photographic series, which showcased the beauty of America’s Queer Rodeo by foregrounding softly lit and often-hidden subjects against expansive New Mexican vistas. At a time of political polarization and in a space typically reserved for a more traditional, patriarchal idea of a cowboy,...

"Ever been on a bull? It's the greatest rush of adrenaline..." An official trailer it out for a beloved indie film titled National Anthem, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker / photographer Luke Gilford. This premiered at the last year's SXSW Film Festival, and also played at TIFF, Mill Valley, and NewFest. The film is a fictional version of the story of Luke discovering the International Gay Rodeo Association (Igra). Charlie Plummer stars as Dylan, who's from rural New Mexico. He takes a gig at the House of Splendor, a homestead built by a community of queer rodeo performers & ranchers, and soon the indefinable magic of an untamed America unfolds before him. SXSW adds: "Finding space to explore and discover himself, he becomes entwined in the life of Sky, a talented barrel racer and free spirit." National Anthem Review: Classic Americana Is Turned On Its Head In Powerful Queer Ballad [SXSW 2023]
In our turbulent sociopolitical climate, it can be hard to remember how important fostering community among fellow LGBTQ individuals is. This is especially true if you're in the South or Southwest, where conservative ideals still reign supreme to the point where it might feel suffocating. It may seem hopeless to realize who you really are, but when you do find your people, it can be the most freeing feeling in the world.
That feeling lies at the center of visual artist Luke Gilford's feature debut, "National Anthem." Set against the sprawling landscapes of New Mexico, the film centers around Dylan (Charlie Plummer), a lonely construction worker who takes an odd job at the House of Splendor ranch. There, his life forever changes when he meets rodeo performers and ranchers from across the queer spectrum, leading to his sexual and gender awakening. From the impressive cinematography to its refreshingly non-pandering script,...

At the beginning of National Anthem, writer-director Luke Gilford’s exquisite-looking and subversive debut feature, 21-year-old Dylan (Charlie Plummer) lives a particularly burdensome and monotonous life. Within his small, rural, isolated New Mexico community he supports his family by shoveling gravel at temporary construction gigs and returns to his one-bedroom home to feed and take care of Cassidy (Joey DeLeon), his younger brother. Most nights his alcoholic hairdresser mother goes out late and returns home with drunken flings, forcing her two sons to sleep on the couch. It’s a difficult, lonely existence, and throughout his primary caretaking Dylan sees no opportunity to escape.
But that pendulum shifts when Pepe (Rene Rosado) pulls up in a pickup truck and offers a group of day laborers some extra work. Lacking many options, Dylan obliges and soon discovers an alternative lifestyle just 30 minutes down the road. Initially tasked with bailing hay at House of Splendor,...

Thankfully there seems to have been a moratorium lately on movies that mine the Lgtbq+ experience for tragedy and awards. There’s also been a move towards authenticity, notably in the area of casting trans actors for trans roles, and both of those factors help and hinder photographer Luke Gilford’s feature debut, a film as rich in personality as a Diane Arbus snap but, dramatically, about as punchy as an instalment of High School Musical. In another year, this might be more of a problem than it actually is, since, perhaps more by coincidence than design, National Anthem arrives at a time when everything it celebrates is under attack, and such a low-key affirmation of personal growth and freedom might actually be what we really need right now.

Toward the end of National Anthem, D’Angelo Lacy in splendiferous drag sings a powerful a cappella rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” while an assembled group of Queer Rodeo competitors and spectators stand in reverent silence through that hymn of patriotism, hands on hearts. Given that the recently passed Tennessee bill banning drag performances is looking to spread through red states and legitimize transphobic discrimination, the scene takes on added poignancy. That helps bolster the emotional heft of first-time writer-director Luke Gilford’s gentle New Mexico-set story of self-discovery in a chosen family.
Gilford knows the setting well. He grew up in the Southwest, with fond memories of attending rodeos with his father as a kid, only later becoming aware of how homophobic and narrow — white, Christian conservative, macho — mainstream rodeos could be. Returning after years of studying art and working in New York, Gilford discovered the International Gay Rodeo Association,...

“Success has many fathers,” the old saying goes, “but failure is an orphan.” Nonetheless, that orphan has no shortage of forensic surgeons ready to give it an autopsy. As early as Saturday of the opening weekend of the Universal gay romantic comedy “Bros,” the Monday-morning quarterbacking began, as various corners of the internet came forward with their reasons why the film’s grosses were a disappointment.
The marketing was too focused on its status as the first major-studio LGBTQ rom-com! It was too white! The poster was off-putting! The title was vague! Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane aren’t big enough names to open a movie! People don’t go to rom-coms during Halloween season! People don’t go to rom-coms, full stop! The reasons seemed endless. Sometimes they were thoughtful. Sometimes.
If you’re familiar with “Bros” star and co-writer Eichner’s work on “Billy on the Street” or “Difficult People,...

“Smile,” the horror film from Paramount and writer-director Parker Finn, made 2 million at the box office Thursday in its preview screenings from roughly 3,000 screens and that began at 7 p.m. It opens on 3,648 screens this weekend.
“Smile” opens alongside Universal’s “Bros,” the LGBTQ+ and R-rated romantic comedy from writer and star Billy Eichner. “Bros” brought in 500,000 at the box office in its own preview screenings from 2,700 theaters that began at 5 p.m. It opens on 3,350 screens this weekend.
Neither “Smile” or “Bros” is expected to break the 20 million mark this weekend, a disappointing trend for movies this month at the box office, though both have modest budgets and hope to turn a profit on the backs of strong reviews for each and some creative viral marketing, whether it’s eerily grinning fans at a baseball game or Eichner running down New York City streets with Paul Rudd and a pack of lesbians.

One of the most memorable experiences I had at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) this year was attending the world premiere of Bros. For those not in the know, this is the first mainstream Lgtbq romantic comedy financed by a studio, and it stars Billy Eichner, who also co-wrote and directed the film. For all the press it’s receiving, one thing that seems to be missing is that at the end of the day, Bros is hilarious and works well for a mainstream audience. It’s Lgtbq-themed, but it’s a universal story everyone can enjoy. Indeed, watching it at Tff was terrific because the audience reacted to it like it was a rock concert, screaming in laughter from beginning to end.

After months of anticipation, the wait for "Bros" is finally over. Billy Eichner is officially off the streets and in the sheets, falling in love and mining a budding romance for all the comedy gold that it's worth. The rom-com sees Eichner starring opposite Luke Macfarlane as two men who fall for one another despite sharing very little in common. As they navigate the complexities of admitting that they may be in an actual relationship, Eichner's character Bobby is also in the midst of a major career development, as he attempts to find funding for a museum dedicated to LGBTQ+ history.
While the movie toes the line between subverting genre tropes and also delivering a very sweet love story, it also acts as a love letter to the larger Lgbtqia community. The bulk of the cast — including the smaller, supporting roles — is filled out by LGBTQ+ performers, including seasoned actors...

Let’s get the historical housekeeping out of the way first: “Bros” is the first gay rom-com to be released by a major studio, an accomplishment with its share of codicils — there have been other queer films released by majors but they weren’t romantic comedies, there have been LGBTQ+ films of all stripes released by studios, but always by their indie shingle.
That’s a lot of historical baggage for any one film to have to carry, but it matters that the film succeeds at the rom-com just as much as it deserves notice for its narrowly defined status as “first.” Star and co-writer Billy Eichner spins a lot of plates here, crafting a hilarious and heartfelt film that also acknowledges the challenging and often hidden history of queer people in American society.

On those rare special occasions, a movie finds the power to unite a generation — and based on the audience reception at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of "Bros," I think this Billy Eisner-led comedy is going to be one such film. In fact, I will be shocked if "Bros" doesn't take home TIFF's People's Choice Award.
Directed by Nicholas Stoller and written by Nicholas Stoller and Billy Eichner, "Bros" is an uproariously funny Queer rom-com about two "emotionally unavailable" (cis white) men. Eichner plays Bobby Lieber, a cranky, perpetually single 40-year-old podcaster known for dedicating his life to promoting LGBTQ+ history. When he crosses paths with Aaron (Luke Macfarlane), a very fit, very fine, man who is much less boring than he first appears, sparks fly. What follows is an unconventional love story that — although is diverts from and subverts many of the tropes we've grown accustomed to in...

The major studio rom-com is back with a flourish, but it took Billy Eichner and Nicholas Stoller to prove the format still works, even if this time it is two gay men who are the ones who find love against all odds.
Although Bros is indeed making history as the first major studio film with an all LGBTQ principal cast, and the first to star and be co-written by an openly gay man, ultimately what it has to say about how hard it is to find the perfect someone to spend your life with is truly universal. Don’t get me wrong. Much of the humor in Bros comes from situations and attitudes specific to gay culture, but you don’t have to be gay to laugh out loud at most of it.

Billy Eichner is ready to make history. On Wednesday, Universal Pictures released the first trailer for the upcoming romantic comedy “Bros,” about “two gay men maybe, possibly, probably, stumbling towards love.”
The film is directed by Nicholas Stoller, best known for “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Neighbors,” and is co-written by him alongside Eichner. Joining the “Difficult People” comic in the cast are Luke Macfarlane, Jim Rash, Bowen Yang, Harvey Fierstein, Guillermo Diaz, Ts Madison, Symone, Guy Branum, and Eve Lindley. It is produced by Judd Apatow, Stoller, and Joshua Chruch.
In a letter addressed to members of the queer media, Eichner stressed his intentions with the film to the entire cast and crew, celebrating “Bros” as “the first gay rom-com ever released by a major studio” and “the first major studio film with an all LGBTQ+ cast in all the roles — even the straight roles.”

Billy Eichner’s landmark romantic comedy “Bros” has added a new crop of actors to its ensemble cast. All principals in the Universal Pictures project are LGBTQ+.
New additions include Academy Award-winning actor-writer Jim Rash, Eve Lindley, D’Lo Srijaerajah, Peter Kim, Justin Covington, Dot-Marie Jones and Becca Blackwell.
The cast reflects a broad range of comedic talent and was built to expand and diversify queer representation on screen. The film is produced by Judd Apatow and Nicholas Stoller, who is also directing. Eichner stars with the previously announced Luke Macfarlane, Ts Madison, Miss Lawrence, Symone, Guillermo Diaz and Guy Branum.
“After queer actors have spent decades watching straight actors capitalize both artistically and professionally by playing LGBTQ+ characters, it is a long overdue dream come true to be able to assemble this remarkable, hilarious cast,” Eichner previously said of the film.

Jason Segel has been tapped to play Paul Westhead in Adam McKay’s Los Angeles Lakers HBO drama series, based on Jeff Pearlman’s book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s. McKay’s Hyperobject Industries is producing.
Written by Max Borenstein, the fast-break series chronicles the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Lakers, one of sports’ most revered and dominant dynasties — a team that defined its era both on and off the court.
Segel’s Paul Westhead, a Shakespeare professor, leaves grading papers behind to be assistant coach of the Lakers. In Los Angeles, Westhead steps into a drama straight off the Bard’s page (of which he is fond of quoting).

When it comes to long-shot predictions in the Movie/Limited Series categories at this year’s Emmys, Tony Ruiz has erred on the side of caution with many of his picks. However, he does believe that Chris Evans will score a Best Actor nomination for “Defending Jacob” at the expense of one of the strongest contenders: Hugh Jackman in “Bad Education.” “I think it might have more visibility but I think there’s just this kind of block against a TV movie,” explains Ruiz in our recent slugfest alongside myself, Riley Chow and Rob Licuria. He continues to say that it’s “mainly because you have a two-hour time frame versus a 7-9 hour time frame.”

AMC’s “Dispatches from Elsewhere” follows a core group of four seemingly ordinary individuals who are thrust together to be a team to play a mysterious game that include a supposed missing woman and a dodgy corporate institute. The second episode of the show puts the audience in Eve Lindley’s Simone’s perspective: Simone is one of those four people, a trans woman who has felt alone and often uncomfortable her whole life but through this odd situation begins to find herself and make important connections, including with Jason Segel’s Peter.
Lindley: I was so excited that this was a character to exist in the story, being trans but not being some sort of diversity box to be checked. She was very human, and I feel like that’s something I strive for in my life and something I strive for in my characters, too.
Jason is so great to work with.

Of all the chats we’ve had in isolation, none have yet come close to speaking to the legend that is Richard E. Grant, ahead of the premiere of new AMC TV series Dispatches From Elsewhere. Collaborating with Andre Benjamin and Jason Segel, this is an exciting new series that keeps the audience guessing throughout.
We discussed the attraction to the project, and Grant talks to us about what Andre 3000 was like on set. He also speaks about the small everyday things we perhaps took for granted in Lbc (life before Corona) and we also get him speaking about his brilliant experiences of last year when he was Oscar nominated for Can You Ever Forgive Me. Naturally, we also chat about his time working on Star Wars and we ask for a little update on Loki…

How Jason Segel Reconciled 2 Parts of Himself With That Very Meta ‘Dispatches From Elsewhere’ Finale
(Warning: This post contains major spoilers for the “Dispatches From Elsewhere” finale.)
Jason Segel ended up quite literally becoming himself with the final “spooky and surprises”-filled episode of his AMC limited series “Dispatches From Elsewhere.”
During the trippy drama’s finale, which aired Monday, Segel was no longer playing Peter — the character we’d come to know and love over the first nine episodes — but portraying a very true-to-real-life version of himself, an actor fans have come to know and love over the last two decades.
This transformation from Peter to Jason happened via a young Clown Boy who came to lead Peter away from “Team Blue” — comprised of his girlfriend Simone (Eve Lindley) and good friends Janice (Sally Field) and Fredwynn (Andre Benjamin) — to give viewers yet another big reveal in a show that’s been packed with twists from the start: the story you’ve been watching...

The “game” that Peter (Jason Segel), Simone (Eve Lindley), Fredwynn (Andre Benjamin) and Janice (Sally Field) have been playing — along with everyone else roped into the Jejune Institute and the Elsewhere Society’s competing searches for the mysterious Clara — finally ended on Monday’s “Dispatches From Elsewhere,” with the reveal that it was, in fact, all a game. Except, it also wasn’t.
Though the middle of the episode, titled “Cave of Kelpius,” led our heroes to believe that this was all a large-scale puzzle orchestrated by someone, the end of the hour brought Janice face to face with that someone, a woman who tells Janice that Clara is a real person and that she, the architect of this game, is responsible for her death.

Things accelerated quite a bit on Dispatches of Elsewhere last week when the show finally found the mysterious Clara and her mandate of divine nonchalance. Now Dispatches from Elsewhere looks to keep up the pace in episode 6 “Everyone.”
Judging by this exclusive new clip, however, there are some loose ends that need to be tied up before Peter (Jason Segel), Simone (Eve Lindley), Janice (Sally Field), and Fredwynn (André Benjamin) can continue on their Clara hunt.
Recall that last week Peter was fired for making a mockery of FCC regulations and transmitting The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations” to everyone’s playlist. Naturally he did this at an imaginary Clara’s request. Now it looks like Peter and Fredwynne are paying a trip to Peter’s former place of employment, music streaming service Manamana (a division of Bender Elmore) to pick up his stuff. Perhaps there is something within the walls...

The following contains spoilers for Dispatches from Elsewhere episode 5.
Through four episodes of AMC’s trippy Dispatches from Elsewhere, our core four heroes have been tasked with an important mission. According to a helpful film reel at the Elsewhere Society, participants in this grand alternate reality game must track down Clara, the young architect of Divine Nonchalance and the key to spreading Elsewhere’s principles of beauty and whimsy throughout the world.
Problem is that Clara has been Awol and neither the Dispatchers nor the audience have actually gotten confirmation that she’s even real…until now. Episode 5, “Clara,” officially introduces the mythical character played by Cecilia Balagot to the show via flashbacks, an exhaustive diary, and an eerily lifelike portrait. On a show that’s already so superbly cast with Jason Segel, Eve Lindley, Sally Field, and Andre Benjamin making up the leads, how did producers go about finding...

If you've never heard of the Jejune Institute before, then prepare to get your mind blown. In 2008, an alternate reality treasure-hunt game recruited thousands of participants in San Francisco, prompted by fliers that instructed people to call a phone number or visit a website, which later led them to the same office building to begin the experiment. Before the game ended its three-year run in 2011, more than 7,000 people participated, and the elaborate and mysterious experiment inspired Spencer McCall's 2013 documentary, The Institute. Now the story of the Jejune Institute is being told again, this time in an AMC anthology series produced by and starring Jason Segel. It's called Dispatches From Elsewhere, and as bizarre as the premise sounds, it's totally based on reality - or, at least, virtual reality.
