The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in television, new media, news, radio/audio, and promotional writing for 2022. Winners will be honored at the 2023 Writers Guild Awards ceremony on Sunday, March 5, 2023.
Given that TV is a writer’s medium, the WGA Awards nominations give great insight into what new shows are likely to enter the Emmys race this summer. Scoring multiple nods across the categories were expected newcomers like “Abbott Elementary” and “Severance,” which already had Emmy-winning runs for their first seasons, as well as more recent critical hits “The Bear” and “Andor.” All were nominated in their respective comedy and drama categories as well as for New Series.
In the Limited Series category, the guild finally gets its turn to recognize “The Dropout,” “The Staircase,” and “Pam and Tommy,” but more importantly, for the purpose of looking at 2023 TV awards races,...

A review of “Panorama,” this week’s The Romanoffs, coming up just as soon as we toast to the phone company…
Among the perks of being a big-shot showrunner is the ability to turn a production into an all-expenses-paid vacation to some beautiful destination. All you have to do is come up with an excuse for your characters to visit Hawaii or Melbourne or Jackson Hole, and the studio will pick up the tab for you to go along with them. Occasionally, great television comes out of this desire to...

An older married couple, Pete and Mary, are not from a place called Rancho Viejo. They’re recently retired, and it quickly becomes apparent that they have absolutely nothing in common with their new neighbors, most of whom live and still work in this desert town near the ocean. But is Rancho Viejo a town or just a place where older people live? In the Playbill, playwright Dan LeFranc reveals that it’s “an American suburb in a temperate climate” and the time is “recently, but not that recently.” There are danger signs in those Playbill descriptions of place and time for.

Teleplay by Melanie Marnich and Kate Robin, Story by Dan LeFranc
Directed by Jeffrey Reiner
Airs Sundays at 10 pm Et on Showtime
While the end of the Soloways’ stay in Montauk seemed to signal the end of the affair between Alison and Noah, last week’s episode proved that, while the two may have tried to move on by being honest with their spouses, time had not dulled the affection the two seemed to feel for each other, nor had it lessened the desire for the affair’s continuation on either side. This week’s episode sees Alison and Noah take drastic steps to act on things they have wanted to do for a long time, in another compelling episode that further develops Noah and Alison, giving the audience the clearest look yet at what drives both individuals.

The end of summer brought with it a number of revelations for both Noah and Alison, culminating in both of them revealing the affair to their respective spouses, with varying results. Combined with Noah breaking things off with Alison following the discovery of her drug dealing, as well as Cole finally agreeing to sell off the ranch, seemed to put both parties on the road towards reconciling their marriages. This week’s episode picks up four months after the end of summer, as Noah and Alison reconnect once again amidst a number of individual difficulties, in another compelling episode that reopens the door for the affair.

The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

Written by Dan LeFranc
Directed by Carl Franklin
Airs Sundays at 10 pm Et on Showtime
While Noah and Alison’s recounting of the summer’s events differed in previous weeks, it was unclear if the discrepancies stemmed from a hazy memory, an obfuscation of the truth due to the police interrogation, or both. However, with the detective dismissing both individuals at the end of last week’s episode, one possible reason was waved goodbye, allowing for a more truthful recounting of what happened in Montauk. The removal of the detective leads to a major revelation about the Lockhart family in this week’s episode, in another compelling outing that provides further insight into what drives both Noah and Cole.
Noah’s change in opinion about Alison this week adds an interesting layer to his attraction. While early episodes have made it clear that Noah pursued Alison more aggressively,...
