Vampire films in the past decade or so have been hit or miss. With every Renfield, you have something
subpar sent straight to VOD. Lately, Universal Pictures has been killing it by dipping their toes back into their vampire lore with the above-mentioned Renfield and last summer’s The Last Voyage of the
Demeter.
As fun as those films were, Universal’s latest release, Abigail, is something on another level.
Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Matt Betinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s latest film.
I also had the joy of speaking with the cast, including a paired-up Melissa Barerra and Alisha Weir (who
were a power force together in both film and on-screen), Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, William
Catlett, and Kevin Durand. Frankly, I’m expecting to see major things for young Ms. Weir. Her performance here is incredible.

The body is barely even cold, but some 24+ hours after Spyglass Media unceremoniously fired actress Melissa Barerra for comments they “interpreted” as being antisemitic (the words their PR used to describe their position), and Jenna Ortega quickly left the franchise citing “scheduling conflicts,” the company is already looking ahead to what’s next after the departure of both their lead actors.
Ortega and Barrera, who played sisters in “Scream V” and “Scream VI,” helped revitalize the franchise, but without them, the series faces a creative problem.

The Scream franchise began in 1996, with the slasher film series accruing a diehard fan base that lobbied for more movies after Scream 4's underwhelming box office performance led to the cancellation of its sequels.
Fans got their wish with 2022's successful outing that featured a mix of old and new cast members to tell a killer new tale.
Twenty-twenty-three's New York-set Scream 6 managed to do the impossible by surviving -- and thriving! -- without series star Neve Campbell.
That flick proved that the venerable title wasn't opposed to revamping the narrative.
Armed with a cast headlined by Melissa Barerra and Jenna Ortega, Scream 6 became the biggest entry yet, leading to a swift announcement for a seventh film in the franchise.
At the time, the series seemed destined to continue with Barrera and Ortega's Sam and Tara Carpenter as the final girls, and we expected that we'd finally meet their mother,...

Melissa Barrera becomes the latest star to be dropped from the Scream series following the departure of longtime series lead, Neve Campbell.
Despite being the star of the last two Scream films, Melissa Barrera has been dropped from the planned production of Scream VII which is being developed by Spyglass.
Reports are stating that Spyglass has released Barerra following social media posts made online about the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. Spyglass has offered no comment on the matter, but it’s understood Melissa Barerra is no longer involved in the next film.
Despite dating back to the 1990s, the Scream series is one of those invaluable commodities in Hollywood, a franchise that is in the ascendancy.
Barrera has led the ensemble for the last two films: Scream V took $137.7 million at the global box office and this year’s Scream VI came in with $168.9 million.
However, the project has already lost Radio Silence,...

Tragic news out of the TV world today as it has been revealed that Euphoria breakout Angus Cloud has died.
He was 25 years old.
"It is with the heaviest heart that we had to say goodbye to an incredible human today," Cloud's family said in a statement shared by Variety.
"As an artist, a friend, a brother, and a son, Angus was special to all of us in so many ways. Last week he buried his father and intensely struggled with this loss."
"The only comfort we have is knowing Angus is now reunited with his dad, who was his best friend."
"Angus was open about his battle with mental health and we hope that his passing can be a reminder to others that they are not alone and should not fight this on their own in silence."
"We hope the world remembers him for his humor, laughter and love for everyone.

After kicking ass and taking names in movies like Ready or Not, Guns Akimbo, and Mayhem, Samara Weaving is traveling through time to lay the smackdown on the era of high hair, neon windbreakers, and thrash metal! According to Deadline, Weaving will star in Bella, a 1980s-set action thriller from Larysa Kondracki.
Kondracki directs the feature, with Craig Flores producing through Bread & Circuses Entertainment alongside John Wick’s Chad Stahelski through his 87Eleven banner. Jason Spitz and Alex Young executive produce, with Jesse Wigutow writing based on Jason Markarian’s script.
Set during a 1980s crimewave in New York City, Deadline says Bella is a “hyper-stylized action thriller about a cop’s daughter who, after her father clings to life following an assassination attempt, goes on a rampage to unearth her father’s assassin and weed out deep-rooted corruption in the New York City Police Department.”

This post contains extremely light spoilers for "Scream VI."
Just when you thought Ghostface couldn't get any bolder...
Following his return to Woodsboro after all this time to reignite old blazes and entangle a whole new generation in his web, the masked killer shows up in New York City. His now-regular set of victims, a group led by Melissa Barerra's Sam and Jenna Ortega's Tara, have hightailed it out of their quaint Michigan town and planned on staying as far away from their nightmares, hiding in the city's cracks and crevasses. But knowing what we know about Ghostface, that doesn't go well for very long.
After picking up the "Scream" mantle with the fifth installment in 2021, Radio Silence directing collective members Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin did something most find difficult when it comes to integrating into an existing franchise: They proved themselves. The film was fast, fun,...

Thanks to last year’s performances in “God’s Creatures” and “Aftersun,” Paul Mescal is one of Hollywood’s hottest rising stars. And Melissa Barerra is on the rise, too, thanks to her breakout roles in “Scream,” “Scream VI,” and “In The Heights.” Now the two actors collide in Benjamin Millepied‘s “Carmen,” a gritty modern-day reimagining of Georges Bizet‘s opera of the same name.

There’s no space for bad feelings as Miranda’s exuberant and innocent Broadway hit transfers to the screen
There’s a sentimental kind of exuberance and more than two solid hours of dancing in the streets in this boisterous, if earnest, movie-musical version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway hit from 2008.
It is a sweet-natured film with Sunny-d optimism and a no-place-like-home ethic; in a pleasant way, it felt like a feature-length version of that moment in Fame when all the kids start dancing and singing around the yellow cab outside New York’s High School of Performing Arts. You might also compare it to West Side Story, soon to be revived by Steven Spielberg. But this is a world of all jets and no sharks, or all sharks and no jets. There is no serious conflict here, and the quarrels, family rows and lovers’ tiffs disappear very quickly.

Powerhouse Lin-Manuel Miranda may not be returning to play the role he originated in his Broadway hit and Tony winner “In the Heights,” but he will be taking on a small role in director Jon M. Chu’s big screen treatment of the early aughts musical. On Friday, Miranda tweeted that he will be taking on the part of Piragüero, also known as “Piragua Guy,” in the upcoming film version of his first musical hit.
Piragüero is the owner of a piragua (a Puerto Rican shaved ice dessert) stand, and is trying to literally “scrap by” even when faced by the encroachment of heavy-hitter ice cream behemoth Mister Softee. When the show opened on Broadway in 2008, Miranda — who created the show and wrote its music and lyrics — played the lead role and narrator, Usnavi de la Vega, who will be played by Anthony Ramos in the film version.

Starz made a clever move this year to attract Emmy voters shopping for contenders to list on their ballots. The network staged its lavish Fyc event for “Now Apocalypse,” “American Gods,” “Vida,” “Power,” “Outlander,” limited series “The Spanish Princess” and docuseries “America to Me” at the Westfield shopping mall in Century City on June 2.
Why hadn’t any TV network thought of this before? Why should networks continue to hide their Fyc celebrations in private event spaces inaccessible to the public when the whole point of putting on such a ambitious production is to draw as much attention as possible to your TV shows, talent and crafts? Just think of the legions of Emmy and guild voters who stroll through the Westfield on a typical day, swinging their Nordstrom, Apple and Tiffany bags while looking for diversions as they sip mocha cappuccino in a to-go cup.
