The MTV Movie & TV Awards are back on one night. The ceremony, set to honor the best in both movies and television — scripted and unscripted — will return on Sunday, May 7, for a live show at the Barker Hangar in Los Angeles.
The event will air on MTV internationally in more than 170 countries.
Formerly titled the MTV Movie Awards with its debut in 1992, the ceremony was renamed the MTV Movie & TV Awards in 2017 to also feature television stars. After a year off the air in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the show returned with two ceremonies in 2021: the MTV Movie & TV Awards on one night and the MTV Movie & TV Awards: Unscripted on the next. For the last two years, the show has had one host for the scripted portion and one for the unscripted; in 2021, Leslie Jones and Nikki Glaser took the mic, and in 2022, Vanessa Hudgens and Tayshia Adams hosted.

Producing the “MTV Movie & TV Awards” is no easy task, but executive producers Vanessa WhiteWolf and Wendy Plaut have plans in place to keep it moving like a well-oiled machine. The two MTV execs sat down with TheWrap and broke down how a team of 800 people “pulling double-duty” works to ensure a smooth show consisting of two distinct yet equally important ceremonies.
The pop culture awards show has offered television enthusiasts and movie fanatics fun celebrity fare and antics for the past three decades. This year, the show has added another ceremony — focused on highlighting unscripted reality series — that will be airing its second installment back-to-back on Sunday.
“Those are two pretty clearly defined lanes … that kind of helps us really define what the two shows are, but [we] still want it to fall under the ‘Movie & TV Awards’ umbrella, which is all about the fans,” WhiteWolf said. “It’s all about fandoms.

The late Chadwick Boseman will be honored as Hero for the Ages at the MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time retrospective special.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards, which are typically held in June, are aiming to make what the network called an “epic return” in 2021. This year’s edition will be a retrospective airing in December, which was the timeframe when organizers had considered mounting a delayed live show.

The MTV Movie and TV Awards will air a special awards ceremony recognizing the “Greatest of All Time” in film and television moments — or at least the best dating back to the ’80s.
Vanessa Hudgens will host the 90-minute awards broadcast that will air on MTV December 6, and it will honor the biggest and best moments in movies and TV from the ’80s until now, because apparently nothing good came out until 1980 anyway. (MTV launched in 1981.)
Performers, honorees and more details for the ceremony will be announced at a later date.
Hudgens however will recognize some irreverent award categories and highlight other memorable presentations and performances in recent pop culture history, and the broadcast will also tease footage from 2021 releases.
MTV also teased that beginning next year, the network will host a weekend event takeover, but added that more details will be coming soon.

As TV and storytelling continue to evolve, does it still make sense to silo male and female performers into separate Emmy categories? Splitting up “outstanding actor” and “outstanding actress” awards as if they’re different skill sets seems like an outdated practice — yet combining them, and eliminating half of the key acting Emmys in the process, would likely be a nonstarter in a business hungry for more, rather than fewer, accolades.
But there’s plenty of precedence for ending the gender divide. The Television Critics Assn., which revealed its 2019 award winners last weekend, already combines its acting categories into just two: individual achievement in drama and individual achievement in comedy.
And the conversation about whether gender-inclusive categories still make sense kicked into high gear in 2017, when MTV undertook several major revamps to its movie awards show. Most noticeably, the cable network added TV to the mix, turning it into the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Why should the film folks have all the fun? In features, the Oscar race is the stuff of constant conversation as contenders are continually placed on the field — first at various film festivals, then at a litany of awards shows before the Academy Awards picks the ultimate season-ending victors.
In TV, the Emmy march isn’t nearly as robust, and there are plenty of reasons for that. For the longest time, TV festivals weren’t necessary to expose audiences to the few new or lesser-seen shows, and Emmy campaigns were pointless when the same programs kept winning year after year.
That’s all changed, but Emmy season hasn’t caught up to the new order of things just yet. There’s very little pomp and circumstance in the months leading up to the Emmys, and that’s why audiences may feel less invested in the races — and ratings aren’t...
