Smaller distributors could be the biggest beneficiaries of exhibitors’ newfound flexibility.
Tim Richards, founder and CEO of the UK-based multiplex chain Vue Cinemas, has said the exhibitor will be “flexible with windows” as the industry scrambles to respond to the near-total absence of US blockbusters at the theatrical box office in 2020.
“We will absolutely be flexible with windows,” said Richards. “It’s probably a discussion that is long overdue but it’s a discussion we are having right now. We are willing to consider reducing windows.

Woody Allen’s “A Rainy Day in New York” will be released in North America, with the U.K.-based distributor Signature Entertainment eyeing to debut the film for North American audiences this fall.
Signature released “A Rainy Day in New York,” starring Timothée Chalamet and Elle Fanning, digitally on June 5 in the U.K. and has set a July 27 home video and DVD release. But the distributor had also previously acquired the film’s North American rights and is hoping to find a partner for a domestic release this fall.
Jon Bourdillon, who leads Signature, shared the news with Deadline on Wednesday. He clarified that the distributor was planning a theatrical rollout in the U.K. before the coronavirus canceled those plans, and the film does not expect to be released theatrically in North America under the present circumstances.
A representative for Signature Entertainment did not immediately reply to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Signature is increasing its global footprint and Allen’s movie marks the company’s most significant North American acquisition to date. Timothee Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez, Liev Schreiber, Jude Law, Rebecca Hall and Diego Luna star in the film about a young couple who...

Exclusive: UK distributor Signature Entertainment has appointed Andrew Nerger as Head of International Distribution and Marek Steven as Senior Publicist in newly created roles.
Nerger joins Signature after a six-year stint as Head of Sales for UK digital aggregator The Movie Partnership where he worked with all major broadcasters and digital platforms. He previously worked at former Sony and Disney Jv VOD service FilmFlex and at indie Metrodome Distribution.
The addition of an international component for Signature is a sign of growth for the firm but also of the growing need for distribution companies to adopt a multifaceted approach as the releasing landscape shifts apace. Signature, like other distributors, is increasingly on the lookout for multi-territory rights. In the case of the home ent specialist, the company would sublicense in a foreign market or handle the direct digital distribution themselves.
Meanwhile, Steven joins as Senior Publicist, reporting to Signature Entertainment...

Pluto TV is further extending its movie offering in Britain by launching a streaming platform, Pluto TV Indies, dedicated to independent films, arthouse award-winners, film festival circuit highlights, world cinema, and theatrical documentaries. The company plans to launch an additional Pluto TV World Cinema in the second quarter of 2019.
“At Pluto TV we are devoted to developing the right environment for quality content,” said Olivier Jollet, Pluto TV’s managing director for Europe. “Independent films create worlds filled with boundless energy, provocative exploration, and unencumbered narratives, but often their reach to a wider audience is limited, while film enthusiasts struggle to find offerings customized to their preferences.”
Pluto TV Indies joins Pluto TV Movies as the second film-only channel on Pluto’s U.K. offering, which launched last October. Pluto says its advertising-funded, free-to-watch model creates a “custom-fit environment for cineastes to discover new favorites and creators to showcase their work.

In 2015 it was announced that Frightfest were set to bring us, under a “Frightfest Presents” banner, some of the horrific delights of their Glasgow and London festivals on DVD and VOD thanks to a partnership with Icon Film Distribution. And whilst that partnership did garner a number of releases – including the likes of Some Kind of Hate, Emelie, Night of the Living Deb and The Sand – the label went dark soon after, with not only the two-year deal coming to an end, but also likely due to the fact that Frightfest partner Icon had some financial woes in 2017, eventually been sold to Kaleidoscope in March of this year.
Skip forward to today and news reaches us that the Frightfest Presents label is reborn, this time in co-operation with Signature Entertainment – a label who we have supported since the early days of their direct to DVD B-movie start-up, with titles such as SnowBeast,...
