“Pirates of the Caribbean” producer Jerry Bruckheimer has provided more clarity on the current state of the Disney adventure franchise. He already teased in March that a total reboot was going to be the first “Pirates” movie out of the gate in the future because “it’s easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.” This reboot is now confirmed to have writer Jeff Nathanson attached. Bruckheimer announced the news in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Nathanson also wrote the screenplay for the last “Pirates” movie, 2017’s “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” which was directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. Rønning and Nathanson, as well as Bruckheimer, have reunited on the new Disney biographical drama “Young Woman and the Sea.”

The Last of Us emerged as one of the most popular and critically acclaimed shows of 2023. Starring Pedro Pascal in the lead role, the series set a new gold standard for video game adaptations. It also won Pascal his first Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series but he failed to win in the category.

However, one of the most gut-wrenchingly emotional scenes from the show’s sixth episode was improvised by Pascal. During a podcast appearance, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann peeled the cover on the emotional scene and Pascal’s improvisation while proving why he should have won an Emmy for the performance.

HBO's "The Last of Us" doesn't need much improvisation. The heart-pounding series from Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann pulls plenty of its best lines from the video game on which it's based, and when writers do make changes, they tend to be for the better. Series cinematographer Eben Bolter even described the show's Emmy-winning third episode screenplay to /Film as a "golden script" and "an instruction manual for greatness." It sounds like improv moments were few and far between during the filming of the first season, but Pedro Pascal did manage to ad lib a line that made one key moment stronger.

Seven years since the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie was released in theaters, and there still is no clear path for any sequels.
ComicBook.com spoke to producer Jerry Bruckheimer about his new film, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and asked about the future of a couple of his franchises: Top Gun and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Bruckheimer mentioned that Pirates is going to be a reboot.
“You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know. Because with Top Gun, you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can’t tell you. But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”
The Last of Us creator Craig Mazin worked on a story for the new Pirates with original screenwriter Ted Elliot.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer continues to tease another Pirates project, with the latest update confirming that a reboot featuring a young, new cast is definitely happening.
It’s been the best part of four years since we first heard that Disney had plans to make two very different Pirates Of The Caribbean movies to continue the popular swashbuckling series that already boasts six films. The plans back in 2020 were to develop a female-led version which would be headlined by Margot Robbie alongside another film with an all-new cast. The latter version was based on a script penned by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott, the writer behind the original Pirates films.
Then in 2022, reports surfaced to suggest that the Margot Robbie-led version had been abandoned with Robbie herself stating that Disney ‘didn’t want to do it.’ However, series producer Jerry Bruckheimer popped up not long afterwards to suggest that...

Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that the next installment of Pirates of the Caribbean will be a reboot of the beloved franchise.
The legendary producer said in a recent interview with ComicBook.com that they’re working on a Pirates of the Caribbean sequel as well as Top Gun 3, but noted that the latter is going to take longer to develop since it involves coordinating schedules with several A-list actors, such as Tom Cruise, Miles Teller and Glen Powell.

Last weekend, Pedro Pascal won the fan vote to take the Male TV Star of the Year trophy at the People’s Choice Awards for his role as Joel in HBO’s The Last Of Us. Six days later, he won the vote of his peers to land the SAG Award for Male Actor In a Drama Series, his first major industry recognition.
Having lost out to Succession’s Kieran Culkin at previous awards shows this season, Pascal looked stunned when his name was called.
“This is wrong for a number of reasons,” he said onstage. “I am a little drunk. I thought I could get drunk.” (You can watch his speech above.)
Later in the press room, Pascal revealed he drank tequila and confirmed that he was “genuinely surprised” by the win, which made him tear up with his publicists backstage.

The upcoming video game adaptation Borderlands has debuted an electric first trailer highlighting the movie’s stylish visuals and star-studded cast. But some fans argue director Eli Roth’s involvement has negatively impacted the project, despite acclaimed screenwriter Craig Mazin penning the script.
Borderlands stars Cate Blanchett as an alien outlaw named Lilith who returns home to Pandora seeking a legendary vault of treasures. She assembles a ragtag crew for the dangerous mission, including Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Black. Early footage wows with cel-shaded cinematography resembling the Borderlands games and offbeat humor. So why are fans worried about Roth’s contribution as director?
What Criticism Has Eli Roth Faced Over Borderlands? Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, and others in Borderlands
Eli Roth is best known for gritty horror films like Hostel and The Green Inferno. Borderlands mark new territory for the director within sci-fi and effects-heavy worldbuilding.

Cate Blanchett will play the lead, Lilith, in the film adaptation of the Western-themed looter-shooter game, Borderlands. The trailer for the film dropped on Wednesday and fans couldn’t help but notice the similarity to James Gunn’s films. While the cast appears to be promising, there were several behind-the-scene issues with the film which fans doubt will affect the film’s quality. One particular promotion in the trailer for the producer of the film also irked the fans.

Exclusive: Craig Mazin, co-creator, writer, director and executive producer of HBO’s breakout new drama series The Last Of Us, has re-upped his exclusive television deal with the network and sibling streamer Max for an additional four years.
No one is commenting but I hear the premium pact is in the eight figures. That should not come as a surprise as Mazin has delivered two back-to-back commercial and critical hits for HBO with the Emmy-winning limited series Chernobyl and drama series The Last Of Us.
Delayed by the strike, Season 2 of the post-apocalyptic drama starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey started in Vancouver last week for a 2025 premiere. Mazin co-created the adaptation of the popular PlayStation game with the game’s Neil Druckmann.
The two share writing, showrunning and episodic directing duties on the drama, which transcended genre to bring in large audiences beyond the game’s devoted followers. The...

Filming wrapped on director Eli Roth‘s adaptation of the Borderlands video game series from Gearbox and 2K way back in June of 2021. A year and a half later, Deadpool director Tim Miller had to step in to handle the project’s two weeks of reshoots because Roth had the chance to finally – after sixteen years – make a feature based on the Thanksgiving faux trailer he put together for the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse. The Borderlands reshoots have been completed, Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Lionsgate is now gearing up to finally release Borderlands into the world on August 9th. With just over five months to go until that date arrives, Lionsgate has unveiled a trailer for the film, and you can check that out in the embed above.

Following news that the Writers’ Guild of America and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have reached a tentative deal, Hollywood is starting to prepare for its comeback. While some productions were in the midst of filming when the WGA strike happened, others were in the early planning stages — like “The Last of Us” Season 2.
“Very proud of the WGA and its membership, and excited to get back to work on The Last of Us Season 2,” showrunner Craig Mazin wrote on Threads Monday. “The strike has not yet been officially lifted, but the second it is, we will spring into action!”
In a follow-up post, the writer clarified that Season 2 is still in preproduction, and writing will resume on the HBO drama series.

Sony Entertainment and HBO hit it big when The Last of Us debuted at the start of this year. The adaptation of the best-selling video game franchise, starring Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Bella Ramsey (Ellie), is one of the network’s most talked about shows in recent memory, and casting rumors for The Last of Us Season 2 are heating up. While there will be plenty of new characters to meet in the hotly-anticipated follow-up season, Abby Anderson is by far the most popular. Abby is a Washington Liberation Front soldier who falls to pieces after Joel kills her father, Jerry Anderson. Abby makes it her mission to hunt Joel down and make him pay for what he’s done. Throughout The Last of Us Part II video game, players step into Abby’s boots, allowing them access to her emotions, torment, and transformation into a sympathetic antihero.

“Pirates of the Caribbean 6” is looking to get weird, according to co-screenwriter Craig Mazin.
The “Last of Us” showrunner and “Pirates 6” scribe told The Los Angeles Times that the franchise installment he wrote with “Pirates” staple screenwriter Ted Elliott was almost “too weird” for Walt Disney Co.
“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird,” Mazin said. “And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”
The most recent “Pirates” film, “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” premiered in 2017. The sixth franchise installment is believed to be set with the original characters; however, there is no word yet if Johnny Depp will be back as Jack Sparrow.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer first said in May 2022 that Depp will not return “at this point” amid Depp’s defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard following her abuse allegations.

The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin is opening up about the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot he had been developing at Disney which he initially thought the studio would pass on due to it being “too weird.”
“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did!” Mazin told the LA Times.
Mazin told the publication he had been working on the script prior to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes alongside one of the original film’s writers Ted Elliot. However, due to the strikes, the development of the reboot has been put on hold.
“[Elliot] wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around,” Mazin added.

20 years after uncovering buried treasure with "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," Disney has yet to repeat that success with any of its other theme park ride-inspired films. As such, the House of Mouse intends to return to the scene of the crime for what will be its sixth round of blockbuster piracy so far.
The sixth "Pirates of the Caribbean" installment has already gone through several permutations. "Deadpool" writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick once toyed with the notion of rebooting the franchise, and there was even talk of a spinoff film starring Margot Robbie taking the place of a traditional sequel at one point. Back in 2022, Robbie indicated the latter film, which was written by her "Birds of Prey" scribe Christina Hodson, has since sunk into Davy Jones's Locker, but that may not be the case. In a later interview with Collider, series...

The House of Mouse has been scrambling for new possibilities for a continuation of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. For a property that isn’t necessarily tied to a character through its source material, the original film dropped an iconic film performance from Johnny Depp as he cemented a new pop culture figure in Captain Jack Sparrow. Jack Sparrow continued with the series after the trilogy arc ended, but recent public controversies makes it murky on whether Depp will be returning or not.

Craig Mazin is loving his career at this moment. Sure, there’s a WGA strike going on, which is hindering what exactly he can work on, but the writer-producer-showrunner of “The Last of Us” is at the top of his game, with studios desperate to work with him. And apparently, one of the studios hoping to have a Mazin project on its schedule is Disney, as the writer has been secretly working on a new “Pirates of the Caribbean” film.

Craig Mazin recently told the Los Angeles Times that the script for “Pirates of the Caribbean 6” is so weird he is surprised Disney actually bought it. Variety reported in summer 2020 that Disney was in early development on two “Pirates” movies: A reboot led by Margot Robbie and a sixth film in the original franchise written by Mazin and Ted Elliott, the latter of whom co-wrote the first four “Pirates” movies.
“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird,” Mazin said. “And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”
The last “Pirates” movie, “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” opened in 2017. Robbie told Vanity Fair last November that her movie, written by “Birds of Prey” scribe Christina Hodson, had been dropped, adding, “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while,...

HBO’s The Last of Us brought the hit video game to the small screen, and it wouldn’t have been the same without Pedro Pascal. Pascal plays Joel Miller, a man who lost his daughter in the apocalypse and was then tasked with a mission involving 14-year-old Ellie. While show creator Craig Mazin asked Pascal not to play The Last of Us video game, Pascal didn’t follow his wishes.

The Last Of Us fans can rest easy. The buzzy Emmy-nominated series’ co-creator Neil Druckmann tells EW in an interview, “We’ve outlined all of season 2 and we’re ready to go as soon as the strike ends.”
The Last Of Us was renewed in January, shortly after the adaptation of the popular PlayStation video game premiered, quickly becoming a pop culture phenom. By May 1, when the writers strike began and script work was put on hold, the new season had already taken shape, The Last of Us co-creator/executive producer Craig Mazin told Deadline in an interview tied to the series’ big showing on Emmy nominations day, confirming the new writers who had joined him and fellow co-creator/EP, the game’s Druckmann, for Season 2.
“We got pretty far actually, we were doing great,” Mazin said.

Although season 2 of the HBO TV series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us (read our review Here) isn’t expected to start airing until sometime in 2025, the actors thought they would start filming the new episodes relatively soon – possibly even by the end of this year. But then the WGA and SAG strikes hit, and the longer they go on, the more a 2023 start date seems very unlikely. With that said, showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have both told Entertainment Weekly that The Last of Us season 2 is ready to go as soon as the strikes end.
Mazin said, “We were able to map out all of season 2. And I also wrote and submitted the script for the first episode and sent it in [to HBO] around 10:30 or 10:40 p.m. right before the midnight [makes a “kajoomph” sound] and the strike began. … I think it’s becoming essentially a near...

Spoiler Alert: This post discusses plot developments from “The Last Of Us Part II” video game, which will presumably serve as inspiration for Season 2 of the HBO adaptation.
“The Last of Us” creator and co-showrunner Neil Druckmann confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Season 2 of the Emmy-nominated HBO series is all outlined and ready to go as soon as the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes come to an end. He’s currently making the press rounds touting the new “Last of Us” attraction at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights.
“We’ve outlined all of Season 2 and we’re ready to go as soon as the strike ends,” Druckmann said. “As far as the next game at Naughty Dog, I can’t say anything. My comms director over there will slaughter me.”

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “The Last of Us” Season 1, through the finale.]
When “The Last of Us” released its third episode, “Long, Long Time,” reactions surfaced faster than fungi on an infected host. Many (including IndieWire) praised the episode for its aching love story, wherein Bill (Nick Offerman), a survivalist holed up in a makeshift fortress, and Frank (Murray Bartlett), a stranger who wanders into one of Bill’s traps, fall in love and — despite their post-apocalyptic environs — build a life together. Seeing that life unfold marks a pivot (or departure) from the original plot, tracking new characters whose story can stand on its own, even when it eventually loops back to our primary leads.
Not everyone liked it. Today’s day and age of second-screen viewing paired with snap judgements doesn’t always reward atypical TV structure, and “Long, Long Time” faced its share of backlash.

Fans of HBO's "The Last of Us" need to count the days until the arrival of the show's second season, as it sounds like it's going to be a very long wait. We're talking two years from now kind of long. So claimed HBO's head of drama Francesca Orsi, who has revealed that the show isn't expected to return until 2025. And that's assuming that the ongoing writers' strike (which has already delayed many productions) doesn't stretch on for months on end. If that happens? The wait could be even longer.
Orsi recently sat down with the folks at Deadline for a wide-ranging interview. During the conversation, the subject of "The Last of Us" season 2 came up, with the executive saying, "We were looking at 'The Last Of Us' for some time in 2025." Notice the word "were" in there, which might be doing a lot of work. Speaking further about the...

HBO’s video game-based horror series “The Last of Us” kicked off with massive success this year, but when can you expect Season 2 to bring Ellie and Joel back to HBO?
At the absolute earliest, HBO is currently looking at “some time in 2025” as the target date for “The Last of Us” Season 2 to premiere, but that’s all dependent on how the WGA strike plays out in the coming months. Speaking with Deadline, HBO’s Francesca Orsi notes that everything is up in the air while writers continue to battle studios and streamers for fair wages.
Orsi explains, “We were looking at The Last of Us for some time in 2025. And The White Lotus was ideally looking to go in 2024, but there’s some question about timing of the strike.”

Award-winning writer-directors Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin joined the Deadline FYC House event on Friday to discuss their HBO record-breaking drama The Last of Us.
Based on the video game series co-created by Druckmann, the TV series takes place two decades after modern civilization collapsed from exposure to a deadly mutable fungus. The story follows a hardened survivor named Joel (Pedro Pascal), hired to smuggle Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone in hopes of uncovering the mystery—and potential cure for humanity—behind her immunity.
Since the show’s January debut, The Last of Us has continued to set records for both HBO and HBO Max. For the first four weeks, its audience grew consecutively larger after first amassing 4.7 million viewers just from its premiere episode alone, making it the largest same-day debut after House of the Dragon.

From a galaxy far, far away to ancient Rome, Deadline has reported that The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal is in final negotiations to join Gladiator 2.
It’s not known who Pedro Pascal would play in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel, but he will be a very welcome addition to what is shaping up to be a very impressive cast. Paul Mescal (Aftersun) stars in Gladiator 2 as Lucius, with Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin), Denzel Washington (The Equalizer 3), and Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) filling out the rest of the cast. It was also recently announced that Connie Nielsen would be reprising her role as Lucilla, the mother of Lucius.

This post contains spoilers for season 1 of "The Last of Us," and the game's sequel, "The Last of Us Part II."
Season 1 of "The Last of Us" was not just one of HBO's most successful new shows in over a decade, but also a landmark moment for video game adaptations. A once cursed genre has now been proven to be especially profitable, and as various other games like "Fallout" make their way to becoming live-action shows, there is a bright future ahead in the entertainment industry. The HBO series faithfully captured the post-apocalyptic dystopia of Naughty Dog's critically acclaimed game in live-action, as well as delivered career-best performances from Pedro Pascal ("The Mandalorian") and Bella Ramsey ("Game of Thrones").

HBO’s hit series “The Last of Us” has already been renewed for a second season, with the first season essentially adapting the entirety of the original video game. Does that mean the events of The Last of Us Part II will be completely covered in “The Last of Us” Season 2? And if so, does that mean the show’s upcoming second season will be its final season?
Co-creator/showrunner Craig Mazin has suggested in recent months that the HBO series won’t be dragging out the games too much, but it also sounds like it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. During a panel over the weekend (via Deadline), Mazin told the crowd that there’s still “quite a bit of story to tell” in the HBO series. What does that mean, exactly?
Mazin teased, “Our plan is to do it not just for one more season. We should be around for a while.

The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin has hinted that the hit HBO series won’t end at season two.
During a panel about the apocalyptic drama on Sunday (16 April) at Nab in Las Vegas, Mazin said there’s “quite a bit of story to tell”.

The update comes after Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie, gave her thoughts on when season two is likely to arrive.
Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show last month, Ramsey said, “It will be a while. I think we’ll probably shoot at the end of this year, beginning of next.”
“So it’ll probably be the end of 2024, early 2025.”

Get ready for a lot more “The Last of Us.”
Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann’s HBO adaptation of Druckmann’s post-apocalyptic game drew major ratings for the cable network while being widely praised as the first truly great series based on a video game. The show was quickly renewed for a second season, and the gut-wrenching finale only raised expectations for Season 2.
The two showrunners have not revealed much about their creative plans for Season 2, but anyone who has played “The Last of Us Part II” can figure out where the series is likely to go. "Chernobyl" wasn't always facts-forward when it came to getting every single detail of the nuclear meltdown disaster into the show, but that's to be expected of any dramatization of real-life events. The show had to compress two years of work investigating and mitigating the damage caused by the reactor meltdown into a single five-hour limited series, so of course characters had to be merged and the timeline had to be collapsed. One area that the storytellers knew they couldn't cut corners with, however, was when it came to the actual science behind the meltdown.

HBO's "The Last of Us" managed to create a compelling video game adaptation by adhering to the dual strategy of staying true to the roots of the game while expanding upon aspects that warranted greater narrative depth. This approach has worked in the show's favor so far, as reflected in the overwhelmingly positive response towards episodes like "Long, Long Time" and "Endure and Survive," which fleshed out backstories for supporting characters in meaningful ways. A good adaptation always finds ways to improve upon its source material, and "The Last of Us" has succeeded in doing so thanks to the passionate involvement of series creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, who innately understand the heart of this tragic apocalyptic tale.

This article contains spoilers for The Last of Us Part 2 game.
HBO’s live-action adaptation of The Last of Us wowed audiences and demonstrated that, with the right team, you can turn a beloved video game into an equally beloved TV show. While the HBO show’s accuracy to the source material was seen as one of its best features, it seems there’s a small chance that Season 2 could play with The Last of Us Part 2‘s biggest twist.
Recently, Esquire published an article about Pedro Pascal’s many successes. Everything from The Mandalorian to The Last of Us was up for discussion, and, of course, the subject of The Last of Us’ next season was eventually broached. As suspected, that season will be based on The Last of Us Part 2: a game in which Pascal’s character, Joel Miller, dies quite a brutal death fairly early on.

The first season of the HBO TV series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us (read our review Here) covered the entirety of the events players know from the first game, so the second season of the show, which isn’t expected to start filming until the end of this year or early next year, will be based on the second game, The Last of Us Part II. Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann – who was also creative director on the video games – have said it’s going to take more that one season to bring the story of The Last of Us Part II to the screen… but those who are familiar with the game know that there’s a major event early on that...

Spoiler Alert: This post discusses plot developments from “The Last Of Us Part II” video game, which will presumably serve as inspiration for Season 2 of the HBO adaptation.
Video game fans knew not to fall too hard for Pedro Pascal’s Joel while watching the first season of HBO’s “The Last of Us” adaptation (although that was all but impossible given Pascal’s acclaimed performance). In the video game’s sequel, “The Last of Us Part II,” Joel is shockingly murdered in the first act of the game by Abby, the daughter of the Firefly surgeon Joel killed in order to let Ellie live. Joel’s death sets Ellie up on a mission of revenge against Abby.
When HBO announced at the end of January that “The Last of Us” would be renewed for Season 2, video game fans knew that meant the demise of Pascal was on the way.

This post contains spoilers for "The Last of Us," up to and including the season 1 finale.
Of all the characters to come and go from "The Last of Us" season 1, one of the most brutal departures was that of Henry (Lamar Johnson) and his deaf younger brother Sam (Keivonn Montreal Woodard).
Henry and Sam enter the season at its midpoint as if to show how close to the heart of the show's central theme their story is. Series protagonists Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) meet Henry and Sam in Kansas City, where the brothers are hiding out from revolutionaries led by the ruthless Kathleen (Melanie Lynskey). As we get to know them, we learn that Sam is Henry's whole world and he's willing to do anything to protect him -- which makes it all the more gut-wrenching when Sam gets bitten and succumbs to the Cordyceps infection overnight.
