She trained as a nurse in Great Britain's National Health Service, and worked at a geriatric hospital for several years. She saw an advertisement in the newspaper for recruits to the London Metropolitan Police, applied, and was accepted. She first served as a constable in South London, to be near her family, and later was assigned to Scotland Yard's missing-persons bureau. Her final post was at another station house in southwest London.
