Just as film and TV have the Oscars and the Emmys, The Podcast Academy is positioning the Ambies to become the event of the year for the podcast industry as well as the newest fixture of Hollywood awards season, complete with shiny statuettes and a swanky ceremony that, for at least one evening, compels podcasters to dress for the camera.
Hosted by Larry Wilmore, the annual event’s third edition is taking place March 7 at the Westgate Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The company to beat will be Audible, which received a total of 19 nominations across the 26 Ambies categories, including several nods for podcast of the year (see below).
The Podcast Academy received a record 1,700 submissions this year, which were narrowed down by a blue-ribbon panel of judges — who apply every year to be part of the panel — to determine the nominees in each category. From there, voting opened up...

Audible signed an exclusive, multiproject development deal with Plan B Entertainment, the production company led by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, for a slate of audio originals.
Under the worldwide deal — which represents Plan B’s entry into audio entertainment — the production company will create a slate of Audible originals. It’s the latest pact by Amazon-owned Audible with high-profile Hollywood talent to create exclusive audio productions.
Plan B’s inaugural project for Audible is “A Summer Love Thing” from cinematographer Bradford Young. Currently in active development, “A Summer Love Thing” follows a woman who leaves her successful singing career to return to her Southern hometown and pursue her first love, a blue-collar worker, for the second time. Plan B and Audible describe the project as “moody, lyrical and ethereal, as is all of Bradford’s work,” using “Southern soundscapes to evoke a place, space and time.”

Many of us know parts of the story of President Richard Nixon’s fall from grace, leading to his 1974 resignation. Two years before, Nixon’s paranoid streak had led to greenlighting the 1972 so-called White House Plumbers break-in at Democratic Party offices in DC’s posh Watergate Hotel, orchestrated by Attorney General John Mitchell. As a tween, I watched the political scandal unfurl on the nightly news over family dinners, with my outraged lefty father screaming at the TV and broadcaster “Uncle” Walter Cronkite while we booed Nixon alongside him. But, as I picked my way through adolescence, I didn’t know the epic details of the story “Gaslit” reveals.
Based on the first season of Leon Neyfakh’s granular “Slow Burn” podcast, with “Mr. Robot’s” Robbie Pickering as showrunner, the eight-part limited series flips the script. It puts Mitchell’s wife Martha at its center and reexamines the scandal...

The first problem for Starz’s new series “Gaslit” may be in its title.
Sure, to “gaslight,” as a verb, has its origins in the 1944 film (and its earlier stage source material), all about a woman whose husband, insistent on his falsehoods, leads her to question her sanity. But its contemporary usage, as a slang term with a meaning that has drifted closer to simply “lying,” might not be how a woman in the 1970s would understand a case of marital dishonesty.
Which is not to say that Martha Mitchell, the character Julia Roberts plays here, doesn’t have a keen understanding of just what she’s up against. Martha, the real-life wife of Richard Nixon’s attorney general John Mitchell, is depicted by Roberts as at once puckishly witty and as not immune to dramatizing her already dramatic circumstances. “Gaslit,” which takes a broad view of the political players...

Roberts is on fire in the trailer, Arkansas accent and all, as a political storm swirls around her, and Penn is nearly unrecognizable in his prosthetics and hair pieces. Let's prep for a very exciting awards season with Starz's Gaslit looking to be quite the thrill ride with a cast that makes your hair stand on end.
Sean Penn may be in Ukraine filming the atrocities occurring there, but you'll soon see him supporting leading lady Julia Roberts as the two play married couple, John and Martha Mitchell, and it looks like they'll knock it out of the park!
The series is a modern take on Watergate, focusing on the scandal's untold stories and forgotten characters -- from Nixon's bumbling and opportunistic subordinates to the deranged zealots aiding and abetting their crimes to the tragic whistleblowers.
They would eventually bring the whole rotten enterprise crashing down.

As Martha Mitchell, the outspoken wife of President Nixon’s U.S. attorney general John Mitchell, Julia Roberts has a lot to say in the trailer for upcoming Starz limited series “Gaslit.”
The show, which stars an unrecognizable Sean Penn as Martha’s husband, John, tells the “untold stories and forgotten characters of the scandal – from Nixon’s bumbling and opportunistic subordinates to the deranged zealots aiding and abetting their crimes to the tragic whistleblowers who would eventually bring the whole rotten enterprise crashing down.”
The series, which premieres April 24 at 8 p.m. Pt/Et on the premium cabler, is centered around Roberts’ character. She’s described as “a big personality with an even bigger mouth,” and an Arkansan socialite. She’s the first person to sound the alarm about Nixon’s involvement in Watergate.
John (Penn) is a “temperamental, foul-mouthed and ruthless – yet hopelessly in love with his famously outspoken wife.

Starz unveiled the first teaser trailer for their upcoming Watergate limited series “Gaslit” on Wednesday, and viewers would be forgiven for doing a double-take when first seeing Sean Penn as former Attorney General John Mitchell. Penn dons heavy makeup for the role, but he’s not the primary focus of the series – instead that’s to his wife Martha Mitchell, played by Julia Roberts.
Martha Mitchell was the first person to publicly sound the alarm on Nixon’s involvement in Watergate, and as a result she became the focus of an intense White House smear campaign enacted by her own husband meant to discredit her. Her story is the central thrust of “Gaslit,” which will premiere on Sunday, April 24 across all Starz platforms in the U.S. and Canada.

Sean Penn doubled down in an interview with The Independent on his belief that “men have become quite feminized.” The two-time Oscar winner generated headlines earlier this month after telling one newspaper, “I am in the club that believes that men in American culture have become wildly feminized. I don’t think that being a brute or having insensitivity or disrespect for women is anything to do with masculinity, or ever did. But I don’t think that [in order] to be fair to women, we should become them.”
When asked by The Independent to clarify these comments, Penn said, “I think that men have, in my view, become quite feminized. I have these very strong women in my life who do not take masculinity as a sign of oppression toward them. There are a lot of, I think, cowardly genes that lead to people surrendering their jeans and putting on a skirt.

Sean Penn has set an ultimatum on the set of the upcoming Starz Watergate series “Gaslit”: either the entire cast and crew receive Covid-19 vaccines, or he’s not returning to work. Although NBCUniversal, “Gaslit’s” studio, imposed mandatory vaccines for “Zone A” cast and crew members (those in close proximity during production), and provided an on-site vaccination clinic for those involved with the production, Penn is putting his foot down. The actor’s representatives confirmed his decision to Variety.
Penn has offered to facilitate the mandatory-for-all vaccination effort, free of charge, through his nonprofit organization Community Organized Relief Effort.

Starz has picked up the Watergate drama “Gaslit,” starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn, the premium cable channel said Monday.
Penn is set to star as Richard Nixon’s loyal attorney general, John Mitchell, with Roberts playing Mitchell’s Arkansan socialite wife, Martha.
Based on Slate’s “Slow Burn” podcast, the anthology series project previously had Joel Edgerton attached to direct and star alongside Roberts and Penn. But Edgerton and his brother, Nash Edgerton, exited the series ahead of its pickup at Starz, as did Armie Hammer. An individual with knowledge tells TheWrap the three departed several months ago due to scheduling conflicts. Hammer and Joel Edgerton’s roles are being recast.

Quibi and LeBron James’ Uninterrupted sports media company are teaming up for a new docuseries about a cheating scandal that has gone down in baseball infamy.

Per the logline for the series, it will look to “transcend the baseball diamond to explore larger themes of greed, cheating, corruption, sportsmanship, and social media activism.” News of the series comes around two months after it was announced that “Slow Burn” producers Leon Neyfakh and Andrew Parsons are looking to hit a home run with a podcast about the Astros’ controversial World Series-winning 2017 season, which they then intend to adapt into a scripted series.

Christopher Nolan Wants ‘Tenet’ to Hit Theaters, but What Will Moviegoing Look Like Later This Year?
When will movie theaters open again? That remains one of the biggest questions facing the film industry today. While Georgia’s governor gave the green light for next week, most theater owners realize that they still need to play the waiting game. The summer movie season is looking pretty thin at the moment, but Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” is finished and stands a shot at being the first big movie out of the gate. Nevertheless, the idea of attending any kind of public experience with a crowd in the foreseeable future raises some serious questions. Even if a highly anticipated release like “Tenet” hits theaters over the summer, will anyone go? When will moviegoing feel safe again?
In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson discuss the prospects of going to the movies later this year, as well as what might happen to fall film festivals in an evolving ecosystem.

Over the past few years, Leon Neyfakh has helped chip away at the idea of an unprecedented age. For many of the steps in both ongoing and shelved crises in modern American politics, Neyfakh’s hosted podcasts have presented both tangible and spiritual connections to the headlines of the relatively recent past.
The latest example is the second season of the Luminary series “Fiasco.” After launching the podcast with a six-part deep dive into the chaos of the 2000 presidential election, the show then turned its attention to the Reagan administration. The mid-’80s series of connected weapon deals, hostage negotiations, and resultant attempts to fund rebel groups in Nicaragua may now have the recognizable four-syllable umbrella of “Iran-Contra.”

It is, on the surface, fairly innocuous news. On Tuesday, Variety reported that Netflix had successfully petitioned the Television Academy to allow the second episode of the fifth season of “Black Mirror” to compete as a TV movie at the Emmy Awards, despite not qualifying based on its running time.
The problem with the decision has little to do with “Black Mirror” and everything to do with the Academy arbitrarily undermining its own rules and regulations.

Richard Plepler has hopped on the podcast train. The former HBO chief executive has invested in Luminary Media, a podcast-subscription service, and taken a seat on its board.

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. After two seasons of charting infamous presidential sagas, the hit podcast “Slow Burn” is turning its attention to the world of music. Slate announced on Wednesday that Season 3 would be the latest piece of entertainment to focus on the circumstances surrounding the deaths of legendary artists Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G.
Along with this reveal comes the introduction of a new host: incoming Slate staff writer Joel Anderson, who joins the site from ESPN, where his coverage centered on stories and issues within and connected to the world of college sports. Prior to ESPN, Anderson worked on both the national and investigative reporting teams at BuzzFeed, where he also charted the interaction between sports and culture at large.
“The first two seasons of Slow Burn went deep on big historical moments, and I’ve always wanted the opportunity to tell stories that way,” Anderson said of the new position.

Epix is set to launch Slow Burn, a six-episode docuseries based on a hit podcast by the same name, the premium television network announced today at TCA.

Powerful political women are becoming more common on our screens.
Robin Wright is playing the president on “House of Cards,” Elizabeth Marvel’s character sits in the Oval on “Homeland,” and on CBS’ “Madam Secretary,” Téa Leoni’s Elizabeth McCord is planning her move from Secretary of State to the White House. Selina Meyer may have lost the Presidency on “Veep” in Season 6, but she’s back on the presidential campaign trial in Season 7.
America is not there yet, but Hollywood may be moving it closer. The popularity of these story lines, combined with celebrities willing to tell their #MeToo stories and create the #TimesUp movement, has infiltrated the public zeitgeist and arguably left a mark on the midterm elections.
