The New York ballroom-style competition series “Legendary” has been canceled at HBO Max after three seasons, TheWrap has confirmed.
On the one-hour reality competition series, vogue dancers represented their houses and battled it out on the stage, going against one another in nine balls that were judged on the basis of fashion, style and uniqueness. At the end, the winning house would leave with 100,000.
The judges included Leiomy Maldonado, Law Roach, Jameela Jamil and Keke Palmer, with the show’s host being Dashaun Wesley. Megan Thee Stallion served as a judge on the first two seasons. The series won two Emmy awards this year for Outstanding Contemporary Makeup for a Reality Program and a TCA award for Outstanding Achievement in Reality Programming.

HBO Max has dropped the ball, cancelling the voguing competition series Legendary after three seasons, TVLine has confirmed.
This is HBO Max’s second unscripted cancellation in two days, following Monday’s axing of FBoy Island. It’s also the latest in a long list of HBO Max casualties triggered by the Warner Bros. Exclusive: The reality cancellations are coming thick and fast at HBO Max.
The streamer has canceled voguing competition series Legendary after three seasons.
It comes after it emerged that FBoy Island was canceled after two seasons.
Similar to the Nikki Glaser-fronted dating series, Legendary is a relatively expensive show for a streaming service that pulled out of original unscripted orders earlier this summer. At the time, the streamer noted that while it wasn’t ordering any new unscripted originals, it would consider renewing existing shows but FBoy Island and Legendary are more expensive than the David Zaslav-run company would like to spend on unscripted shows.
It’s also a blow for diversity in unscripted programming as Legendary was one of the most inclusive reality shows on air and praised by GLAAD.
Legendary features a group of voguing houses, each featuring five performers and a leader called the house mother.

As fans of “The Office” know, half of the humor of a mockumentary is the camera angles, swiftly cut-ting to a reaction shot or zoom-ing in on a ridiculous moment. Food, sumptuous food. “The Great’s” second season served up a feast fit for royal banquets. Peter (Nicholas Hoult) and Catherine (Elle Fanning) ate their way through the Hulu show. As the choreographer of Legendary, Tanisha Scott’s job is to ensure every house’s moves look polished and ready to wow the judges. With only three days of prep with a house before the ball begins, she needs to make sure they are ready and up to the task.
Legendary is an HBO reality competition where ten houses from the ballroom scene compete in nine balls for a 100,000 prize. Each ball has a theme, like Animal Queendom or Hip-Opera, and a challenge where the choreography must highlight a specific specific element of vogue.
The competition is presented by Dashaun Wesley and judged Jameela Jamil, Leiomy Maldonado, Law Roach, and Keke Palmer. Each judge has something special that they are looking for in every ball, so Scott knows that each performance she choreographs needs to be clean, skilled, fashionable and entertaining.

One of the best-kept secrets in the world of Reality-Competition Series is the creative and often breathtaking joy of HBO Max’s “Legendary.” Entering its third season, the program finds 10 ballroom houses competing in performance categories such as voguing, face, and dips for a prize of 100,000 and an increasingly shiny trophy. This year, the show’s judges have a new weapon at their disposal, the “gag flag.” A one-time opportunity to save a house from being eliminated in that particular episode.

“Legendary,” which just finished its second season on HBO Max, is one of the most confounding competition programs on television. Featuring 10 different ballroom houses battling for $100,000, the series has incredible performers that make it a must-watch, but the only consistent thing about the judging is how inconsistent and confounding it is. Often balancing out that frustration, however, is “Legendary’s” emcee, Dashaun Wesley. A ballroom icon himself, the 36-year-old is simply a natural at hosting.

In Legendary’s Season 2 finale, it all came down to two houses: Balenciaga and Miyake-Mugler.
Both had undergone quite the journey thus far. Balenciaga, who began the competition strongly, struggled to meet the judges’ expectations during their house performances in recent weeks. Not to be kept down, though, they came back in the bonus categories and propelled themselves all the way to the finale.

Legendary host and Mc Dashaun Wesley first discovered his love of dance at just 4 years old, competing in yearly dance-offs to celebrate his Brooklyn, NY neighborhood. Then came his introduction to the world of voguing - a highly stylized form of modern dance that often imitates poses struck by models on a catwalk, and evolved from the ballroom scene.
As a kid, Wesley struggled to find mentorship and a place to fit in as a young, Black, gay dancer. At 14 years old, things cleared up for him while walking down Christopher Street in New York City's West Village. "I saw this one guy playing vogue music from a huge boom box," he told Popsugar. "He had a crowd following him, so I started following them. A young intrigued Dashaun wanted to learn about that world. From that day on, I kept coming back so I could...

When HBO Max launched on May 27, the television world was introduced to a competition series unlike any seen before on screen. Inspired by the culture of ballroom, “Legendary” follows eight houses as they vogue their way through nine balls to win a cash prize of $100,000. Many know of the ballroom culture via Paris Is Burning or Pose, but it still isn’t mainstream. HBO Max’s Legendary continues to help bring ballroom to the forefront and show that it’s just not about dipping, duck-walking, voguing and having a party. It is a culture that has influenced the mainstream and one that builds community. Legendary host Dashaun Wesley and judges Leiomy Maldonado, Law Roach, Megan Thee Stallion and Jameela Jamil spoke about the new reality competition in a pre-recorded panel at Atx Television Festival.
In Legendary, HBO Max brings the underground ballroom community to the mainstream by showcasing “houses” as they compete in balls to show off their skills in the five elements of voguing and fashion to win a $100,000 grand prize, but more importantly “legendary” status and bragging rights.

Just hours after Megan thee Stallion landed her first Billboard number one single for her “Savage” remix featuring Beyonce, the hot girl rapper had another reason to celebrate, getting all dressed up for the virtual premiere of the HBO Max series “Legendary,” where she serves as a judge.
Meg joined fellow judges — fashion stylist Law Roach, actor Jameela Jamil and ballroom icon Leiomy Maldonado — for the interactive party, as “Legendary” emcee Dashaun Wesley took center stage, kicking things off by introducing the series’ first episode.
“For decades the world of ballroom has been considered an Lgbtq subculture. But this subculture has inspired countless dancers, musicians, stylists, fashion designers. It’s been a huge part of our pop culture,” said “Legendary” executive producer Rob Eric. “Tonight, in all its fabulous glory, ballroom takes center stage in an over the top competition series where eight houses will go head-to-head to the cash...

In the years since “RuPaul’s Drag Race” became an international sensation — which happened around the time the drag reality-competition show transferred from the previously Lgbtq-centric channel Logo to the more mainstream VH1 — countless imitations have cropped up. Netflix’s decision to reboot “Queer Eye,” while trading on a name recognition that predates “Drag Race,” no doubt was partly influenced by the latter’s massive success. HBO recently debuted “We’re Here,” a structureless amalgamation of “Drag Race” and “Queer Eye” hosted by three former “Drag Race” contestants. World of Wonder, the production company that created and produces “Drag Race,” has spawned dozens of spinoff shows to varying degrees of success.
So far, none have come close to capturing the magic and audience fervor of the original sensation, and while RuPaul’s crown isn’t getting snatched anytime soon, “Legendary” is the first queer reality show to come close.

Get your duck walks in a row: It’s time for the premiere of HBO Max’s Legendary.
The hour-long series, which premiered Wednesday, kicks off with Ballroom 101 for those of us who haven’t watched Pose. Or RuPaul‘s Drag Race. Or Drag Race All-Stars. Or Paris Is Burning. Ballroom is a community mainly founded by Black and Latina transgender women in which dancers — who organize themselves into “houses” overseen by a mother or father figure and often named after fashion designers — compete against each other. Each ball event gives the houses the chance to show off their style,...

“Legendary” is a fascinating, messy study in contrasts. The new reality competition series is a celebration of ballroom culture, a chronically underappreciated queer subculture, premiering on the launch day of HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s new streaming service backed by billions of corporate dollars. It shines a gorgeous, sleek spotlight on its fearsome dancers, who have traditionally had to shine bright in dusky clubs. It pours a sizeable budget into a form of expression that has long depended on Diy ingenuity. Its messaging is slapdash, but its production value is slick as hell, packaging ballroom as an almost high octane sport. Whether you’re an aficionado or neophyte, one has ever seen ballroom presented with such a lavish eye.
The closest analogue to “Legendary” is “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” RuPaul Charles’ reality show that brought the typically subversive art form of drag into the mainstream and turned queens into household names. The...

Teams from some of the most celebrated underground ballroom houses of all time square off in the new trailer for the upcoming competition series, Legendary, premiering May 27th on HBO Max.
The new trailer is packed with tantalizing highlights from the series, which pits eight houses against each other over the course of nine balls to determine who gets to take home the grand prize of $100,000 — and, of course, bragging rights. But while the fashion and dancing are front and center, the Legendary trailer also highlights testimonials from longtime house...

HBO has dominated the Emmy race for years. Now, sibling streamer HBO Max is looking to get into the game.
HBO Max launches on May 27 — just four days before the Television Academy’s May 31 cutoff for Emmy eligibility. But that’s still enough time for the streaming service to enter the awards race this year with two shows: Competition series “Legendary” and half-hour anthology series “Love Life.”
Variety has confirmed that those two shows will be the first to be submitted by HBO Max for Emmy consideration. The streamer plans to create an awards campaign for both.
“Love Life” will bring Anna Kendrick into the Emmy conversation, as the Oscar nominee stars in the anthology series’ first season, along with Zoë Chao, Peter Vack and Sasha Compère. The half-hour anthology “follows a different protagonist’s quest for love each season, with each half-hour episode telling the story of one of their relationships,...
