The 1980s saw a string of action movies hit the big screen and extrapolate into full-fledged franchises. In 1987, cinema was introduced to Lethal Weapon. The action-packed thrill ride saw Mel Gibson stars as Martin Riggs, an unhinged cop who is partnered with by-the-book LAPD detective, Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover). In typical buddy cop formula, the two opposing cops start out hating each other, before ultimately growing to like each other and form a solid bond. After the success of the first film, three sequels followed, beginning wit Lethal Weapon 2 which saw Joe Pesci board the franchise for extra comedic...

When FX's "Justified" completed its six-season run in 2015, the United States' view of law enforcement was undergoing a radical shift due to the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri over police officer Darren Wilson's fatal shooting of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown. There would be many more tragic incidents in the years ahead, but the most egregious might've been the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis policeman Derek Chauvin. Fortunately, justice was served in this case (Chauvin is currently serving a 21-year prison bid), but Chauvin's nearly 10-minute choking of Floyd was so mind-bogglingly cruel that anything less than a life sentence felt inadequate.
As these abuses piled up, and the dynamic between cops and the people they're charged to protect and serve changed, people began pointing to the propensity of films and television to valorize law enforcement and the judicial system as upstanding dispensers of justice. And if you happen to...

Really, it’s all Three Days Of The Condor’s fault. That’s the film that convinced a young, impressionable Shane Black that Christmas could be a suitably dramatic, sometimes ironic, sometimes sincere and heartfelt, backdrop for a thriller. “In it, Christmas played a huge part. It was set against the backdrop of people shopping, Christmas carols are blaring, there’s snow,” says Black, talking exclusively to Empire. “And even the pause at the end where Redford walks outside with the hitman, and the guy says, ‘Can I give you a ride?’ This is a guy who was about to kill him, or someone else. And it really felt appropriate to me that Christmas was the backdrop for that. It struck a spark, to take a holiday and make it not just a backdrop but a character itself.”
That, along with an intriguing grasp of the true meaning of Christmas,...

Martin Riggs may not make things complicated, but the Warner Bros. Discovery merger sure has for “Lethal Weapon 5.”
Lead star and director Mel Gibson, who famously plays Detective Martin Riggs in the film franchise, gave an update on the state of the fifth installment. Following original director Richard Donner’s death in 2021, Gibson took over as director, using a script from Richard Wenk developed alongside the late Donner. The film was expected to originally launch on streaming platform HBO Max.
“The only delay is now with all the shake-up at Warners, with Discovery coming in and the new boss [David Zaslav],” Gibson told ScreenRant. “They chop everyone else up and throw them away and get new people. It always takes time for these companies to regroup, so that’s been a delay, but I’m pretty confident we’ll get this one up on its feet, probably shoot it in...

I actually miss the old genre where two buddies become a dynamic duo and fight crime together. Lethal Weapon is one of those films that helped get it started. It’s an old film starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as Detective Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh. These guys weren’t just acting as your average cops, however. They were total goofballs, with Riggs being the legit crazy one. I mean, who else can dislocate their shoulder just to relocate it? These films are a blast to watch and the bread and butter of it all is watching the chemistry between Riggs

There’s been plenty of talk surrounding Lethal Weapon 5 over the last two decades, but it never actually felt close to becoming a reality until recently. There had been countless attempts at mounting another installment in the classic buddy cop franchise, but there was always some sort of major obstacle in the way whether it was the reluctance of the core team to return, the failure to crack a worthwhile story or a complete lack of interest from the studio.
However, that all changed twelve months ago when Lethal Weapon 5 was officially confirmed to be in active development, with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover set to try and dispel the notion that they were too old for this sh*t by returning as Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh, and 90 year-old filmmaker Richard Donner stepping behind the camera for the first time since 2006.

Richard Donner hasn’t directed a movie since 2006’s underrated Bruce Willis thriller 16 Blocks, but even if the veteran filmmaker had decided to call it a day he’s already left behind a more than impressive legacy as the driving force behind some all-time favorites.
Not only did he helm one of the greatest horror movies ever made in The Omen, a beloved comic book blockbuster in Superman, an enduring classic in The Goonies and a staple of the Christmas schedule in Scrooged, but he also delivered arguably the greatest and certainly most influential buddy cop actioner to come out of Hollywood thanks to Lethal Weapon.
No matter how oversaturated the subgenre became over the following decades, there wasn’t a duo who came close to generating the sort of natural chemistry that defined the adventures of Mel Gibson’s Martin Riggs and Danny Glover’s Roger Murtaugh. The...
