Monica Bellucci will star alongside “Call My Agent!” scene-stealer Nicolas Maury and Cesar-winner Alex Lutz (“Guy”) in “Ça C’est Paris”(This Is Paris), a workplace comedy set in the bawdy world of Parisian cabaret. Commissioned by France Television, the crowd-pleasing series comes courtesy of Mon Voisin Productions and director Marc Fitoussi, two of the key drivers behind international breakout “Call My Agent!.”

Apple TV+ will be tapping into France’s lavish culinary heritage with “Carême,” a new original series about the world’s first celebrity chef, Antonin Carême, which will be directed by Martin Bourboulon (“The Three Musketeers: d’Artagnan”).

He not only became an iconic chef, he also became a spy for France as his talent and ambitions attracted the attention of powerful politicians, including Napoleon. The series will shed light on the miserable reality of 19th century kitchens, contrasting with the opulence of the mansions and sophisticated of aristocrats.

We’ve all looked at skyscrapers thrusting tall and proud into the unsuspecting sky and snorted to think of what was subconsciously driving the (inevitably male) architects. Right? Of course we have. Yet I cannot think of a single film before this one that takes our presumptions and seems to say, “Yes, heh heh, yesssss,” with a glint in its eye. I mean, sure, Kate Winslet’s snide aside in Titanic to White Star exec Bruce Ismay about Freud’s “ideas about the male preoccupation with size” is one thing. Eiffel is something else entirely. Also what it does is almost surely subconscious, too, which is sort of perfect. *snort*
This French romantic drama posits that engineer Gustave Eiffel had no interest in his company — which had just delivered the Statue of Liberty to New York City as a gift to America — building a massive tower for the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris.

The tousle-haired star could be regarded as the quintessential Parisian actor – and now he’s taking on the city icon that looms largest
If Michael Caine is the quintessential London actor, Romain Duris could become his Paris equivalent. Born and raised in the city, he rose to international fame in 2005 playing the real-estate hustler with ambitions to be a pianist in Jacques Audiard’s The Beat That My Heart Skipped. Quick to the punch but nifty in his fingerwork, dropping rats in a sack on unwanted tenants while wearing Cuban heels, he was Parisian squalor and glamour in one snake-hipped paradox. Then he cashed in his tousle-haired bourgeois-bohème cachet in Christopher Honoré’s Dans Paris and Cédric Klapisch’s Paris. And now the pinnacle: he is starring in a new biopic about engineer Gustave Eiffel.

Romain Duris brings authority to this fanciful version of history, which has Gustave Eiffel erecting the monument as a Taj Mahal for his lost love
Some towering absurdity and vertiginous silliness here … and also a bit of innocent enjoyment. Eiffel is a handsomely produced period drama, a madly Lloyd-Webber-ised romantic fantasy about the construction of the Eiffel tower in 1889 in Paris for the 100th anniversary of the revolution. Screenwriter Caroline Bongrand imagines (which is to say: she entirely invents) a backstory for the great engineer Gustave Eiffel, a grand passion that inspired him to build the tower as his own private Taj Mahal for a lost, secret love.
Eiffel is played with authority and gusto – as well as various frock coats, top hats and lengths of beard – by Romain Duris. In real life he was a widower with five children when he embarked on the tower, but this drama declares...

Photo: ‘Eiffel’ Paris is as much a media icon as it is a city. Outside of Europe, Paris is often idealized as a city of love, culture, and lavish lifestyles. Writers moved to Paris to produce their best work, the American in Paris became a troupe in itself. So, in being a media phenomenon, there’s quite a bit of symbolism that tells you right away that a story is set in Paris. It could be the cafes and the patrons wearing berets, perhaps a customer leaving a market with a baguette artistically sticking out of a canvas tote. But, primarily, it’s the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower can be seen in a postcard-worthy background in just about every Parisian set film, episode, or a single scene. It’s iconic, not only as a landmark, tourist attraction, or piece of history, but as a representation of the media’s romanticized Parisian life.

Architect and structural engineer Gustave Eiffel built not only Paris’ iconic Eiffel Tower, but designed the interior structure that ensured that our iconic Statue of Liberty would stand up and continue to stand for the long term. These are among the historical tidbits you will learn in Eiffel, a lush French historical romance/drama built around real events in Eiffel’s life.
Eiffel is a beautiful period film with polished production values, an attractive cast, and an appealing premise. Since the Eiffel Tower just celebrated its 130 anniversary in December, one might assume Eiffel is a biopic. It is, partly, but mostly it is a romance set against the backdrop of the building of the Eiffel Tower. The film is loosely based on Eiffel’s true story and centers mostly on the period of Eiffel...

Pathé may be one of France’s oldest film groups, but it is young at heart. The only French film company that is still fully involved in exhibition, production, distribution and sales, Pathé has been confronting the challenges wrought by the pandemic and the arrival of streamers with bold steps and ambitious new projects. During the Cannes Film Festival, the company will receive Variety’s Intl. Achievement in Film Award.
In the past two years, the family-owned film group, which is led by the visionary businessman Jérôme Seydoux, saw its “Coda” win three Oscars for family drama; greenlit the country’s biggest-budgeted movies in recent history, “Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom” (75 million) and the two-part adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ masterpiece, “The Three Musketeers — D’Artagnan” and “The Three Musketeers — Milady” (75 million); it ventured into TV series; and forged bonds with streaming services, including Netflix and Apple TV+.

After a chaotic year marked by a five-month shutdown and Covid-related restrictions, the French box office bounced back during the last quarter of 2021, bolstered by “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and a flurry of big-budgeted U.S. and French releases.
After reopening on May 18, French theaters pulled 96 million admissions — not a bad result considering that it’s just 23.2% drop from 2019, when France’s box office broke a 50-year record. Compared with 2020, when cinemas were closed for several months, tickets were up by 47.2%, according to Comscore France. Based on an estimated average of €6.75 per ticket, the French B.O. reached €648 million ($731 million).
Hollywood tentpoles dominated the top 10 highest-grossing films of 2021, starting with Sony’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which sold over 5 million tickets. Universal’s “No Time to Die” and Warner Bros.’s “Dune” followed. The other U.S. titles in the top 10 are Disney’s “Encanto,” Universal’s “F9,” Warner Bros.

A handsome if occasionally harebrained addition to the “great man” genre — with the added implication that such heroic feats might not have occurred were it not for an equally impressive lady working behind the scenes — “Eiffel” offers the half-invented story of Gustave Eiffel, the civil engineer who built the most recognizable monument in the world.
From the opening seconds, the 2.66:1 CinemaScope aspect ratio is a clue that this project was not designed to capture the vertical progress of the Eiffel Tower’s construction. Rather, director Martin Bourboulon’s choice to shoot in the same ultra-wide format as “The Bridge on the River Kwai” signals that the movie will remain firmly rooted at ground level, focused on Eiffel the man and the more melodramatic details of his personal life.

Feminist mystery “Dilili in Paris,” a new feature-length enterprise from French animation legend Michel Ocelot spotlights the prominence of noxious ideologies, misogyny and racism through an occasionally dazzling, though oddly rendered, adventure set during the Belle Epoque period of the late 1800s and early 1900s in Paris.
Dilili (voiced by Angelina Carballo in the English dub), a young biracial and bilingual Kanak immigrant from New Caledonia, a French colony in the South Pacific, snuck into a ship to reach Europe, where she now performs her tribe’s daily tasks as exotic amusement for Parisians. Speaking openly about the racially motivated discrimination she’s endured, Dilili shines as a rare heroine of color in a white world. She feels neither fully French nor Kanak, because she is either two fair or too dark depending on where she finds herself geographically.
Intrigued by her linguistic abilities, Orel (Jason Kesser), a local courier,...
