Cillian Murphy capped off his domination of awards season by claiming the top acting prize for film on home soil.
The Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG award winner on Saturday night added perhaps a final statue to his flawless haul of honors for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” when he was named best lead actor at the 21st Irish Film and TV Academy Awards.
“God, I’m still so brutal at this,” the famously shy actor said on collecting the award, presented to him by “Killers of the Flower Moon” star and fellow recent awards circuit regular Lily Gladstone. “But being in this room is so special — being at home, with people that I love and admire amongst my fellow nominees and some of my favorite people.” Speaking backstage afterwards at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre, he added: “It feels lovely being home with so many friends and colleagues.”

Prior to making headlines the next day after a short-lived health scare that required a brief stay in hospital, Ireland’s President Michael D. Higgins arrived at Dublin’s Complex arts center last Wednesday to present the Dublin film festival’s highest honor to Steve McQueen. Introduced in 2007 and named the Volta Award, after the first commercial cinema set up in Dublin in 1909 by writer James Joyce, its previous recipients include Daniel Day Lewis, Claudia Cardinale and Al Pacino. The famously serious director was in high spirits, enthusing that “festivals are about passion, a passion for film.” “There’s always a buzz, isn’t there?” he continued. “[As you] go to the next picture, the next film, you tend to give people tips and say, ‘Oh, you’ve got to see this, you’ve got to see that…’”

One thing that rankles about some historical dramas is their tendency to indicate the story’s epoch using the broadest possible signifiers. Movies about the 1980s in particular often draw as much from the spirit of ’80s-themed house parties as they do from history. In contrast, Tim Mielant’s Small Things Like These fashions a believable and at times engrossing vision of the mid-’80s, even if its story could’ve benefited from similar nuance.
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Claire Keegan, the film takes place during the 1985 Christmas season in New Ross, Ireland. In this working-class town, not everything is “from” the ‘80s: People wear clothes that look like they’re from the ’60s, the kids watch ’70s cartoons like Danger Mouse, and some of the vehicles even seem as they’re from the ’40s. Small Things Like These understands how the vestiges of the...

Irish actress Clare Dunne portrays Amanda Kinsella on the hit AMC+/Rte crime drama series Kin.
She most recently accepted the Irish Film and Television Award for Best Actress In A Lead Role - Drama for Kin and the European Shooting Star honor at the Berlin International Film Festival.
TV Fanatic caught up with Clare to chat about the journey she's been on this past year, what it was like working on Kin, and what's in store for Season 2!
Congratulations on all your success! How has Kin changed your life?
It's been a whirlwind. There has been a lot of accepting awards which is such a lovely thing -- it's also just a chance to say thank you to the people who just gave me the best opportunity ever.
I'm currently learning French after being in Berlin because I met so many French casting directors, and I'm trying to get work in France!

AMC Networks is keeping a string of beloved series around.
Kin, Bloodlands, My Life Is Murder, Creepshow, and Slasher have all been picked up for additional seasons.
Kin Season 1 featured an all-star cast when it bowed in the fall, taking viewers to Dublin, Ireland, for a fast-paced drama.
When one of their own is brutally murdered, the Kinsellas step out to get revenge on those who wronged them.
The cast includes Charlie Cox, Aidan Gillen, Emmett J. Scanlan, and Clare Dunne.
The series was a TV Fanatic favorite from the very first scene, so we're excited to see how this plays out.
Slasher, which features a new setting and storyline every season, has locked in Eric McCormack as its new lead.

AMC Networks has unveiled a slew of renewals across its streaming services.
Kin, Bloodlands, My Life Is Murder, Creepshow and Slasher have all been picked up for additional seasons.
Slasher, which airs on Shudder, has also set Will & Grace’s Eric McCormack as lead on its latest installment, Slasher: Ripper.
The series, which has been renewed for its fifth season, is heading back in time to the late 19th century — there’s a killer stalking the mean streets, but instead of targeting the poor and downtrodden like Jack the Ripper, The Widow is meting out justice against the rich and powerful. The only person standing in the way of this killer is the newly promoted detective, Kenneth Rijkers, whose ironclad belief in justice may wind up being yet another victim.

During the interview with Scott Davis, which we will be releasing in full on the Kin Series One premiere date of the 24th of February, we asked Charlie Cox about his recent, surprising appearance as Matt Murdock in the MCU’s Spider-Man No Way Home with Tom Holland. Bodyguard star Nina Toussaint-White is to lead a Channel 5 thriller from Deceit producer Story Films.
Toussaint-White will play Jodie in Witness No.3, a single mum who runs a hairdressing salon. One day at work, Jodie momentarily glances out of the window and in a split second her life descends into freefall. What she notices seems innocuous – two men walking on the opposite side of the road – but she’s actually witnessed a killer and his victim moments before a murder.
Joining the ensemble cast are Sion Daniel Young, Clare Dunne Ruaridh Mollica and Sue Johnston.
Filming in Ireland, the thriller from up-and-coming writer Thomas Eccleshare is the latest from the Viacom-owned UK broadcaster, which has been ramping up its drama offering following the success of the All Creatures Great and Small reboot and thrillers like The Drowning...

It was almost too easy.
On Kin Season 1 Episode 8, Amanda takes over as head of the Kinsella crime family and becomes one of Dublin's most powerful -- and dangerous -- people.
But for Amanda to rise, others had to fall.
The power dynamic has shifted. Amanda is the one making the decisions now. Her evolution has been the most satisfying through-line of the season.
The scene between Amanda and Eamon is easily one of the best in the series. Two power players negotiate, neither one willing to compromise until they finally come to terms.
It's thrilling to watch two incredible actors tackle a scene like this. Not only that, but it's satisfying to see Eamon give Amanda her due, respect her game, and treat her as an equal.
I'm negotiating. You're a businessman. You know how it works.
Amanda Permalink: I'm negotiating. You're a businessman. You know how it works.

If you're a fan of Kin, you're going to love getting this insight into the series' most compelling characters -- Amanda Kinsella.
All season long, Amanda has been running her own plays and standing up against the family for a myriad of reasons. After Kin Season 1 Episode 6, her attempts to steer the family in a direction they didn't like cannot be overlooked.
We had the chance to chat with Clare Dunne with a specific emphasis on everything that led to the stunning final moments of the latest episode.
Do you think it was Jamie's death that pushed her to kind of carve her own path away from the male dominance of the family?
Like, if you think about it, her main aim in life before he was killed was to get them out of this world of gangs and give them an education. Give them the chance to not have...

The Kinsellas have got themselves in a mess that's proving impossible to clean up.
On Kin Season 1 Episode 6, egos and loyalties clash, leading to rash decisions and fatal mistakes.
Is there any way this can end without a great deal of bloodshed?
This certainly felt like the most action-packed episode so far.
There's so much that happens here that will affect the endgame, and it's filled with suspense, tension, thrills, and catharsis.
Amanda is making a stand, but she's also isolating herself. She's finding her footing and anticipating the future, trying to do damage control while at the same time protect her surviving son.
Did she have Eric arrested or was that just an inevitability? Regardless, this will not exactly endear her to Frank -- how is she going to find out where the drugs are now? How will this serve to protect Anthony? Or could it be pure revenge...

Clare Dunne's Amanda Kinsella has taken the world on her shoulders after her son's death.
She's tried alternatively to get vengeance and seek retribution for those responsible while also protecting the family and their business interests.
Kin Season 1 Episode 6 will find Amanda confronting Frank (Aidan Gillen), the head of the Kinsella family.
She has the hope he will turn in Eric (Sam Keely), freeing the family from some of their more precarious binds.
The family is in a death grip with Ciarán Hinds's Eamon, and he's not playing around.
If something doesn't give, there will be a huge price to pay, as Amanda sees it.
In this exclusive clip, Amanda tries to get Frank on board with the prospect of turning Eric into the authorities.
It was always going to be a hard sell for Frank to give up Eric.
Amanda goes for it anyway, facing off against Frank,...

For a family with so much love, the Kinsellas certainly can be awful to each other.
Their plans succeed on Kin Season 1 Episode 5, but the cost is steep, and now they're in even more danger.
Who will pay the ultimate price? Is it worth it?
Halfway through the season, we're now seeing the endgame begin to take shape. This episode makes a point of showing us how the Kinsellas are spiraling and splintering.
Michael's scene in the bathroom was well-handled -- the fan, the warped and blurry vision -- giving us his point of view. He was not in the right state of mind to be wandering home, but everyone else was too high to notice his departure, except Amanda.

In 2019, he starred opposite Tom Hiddleston and Zawe Ashton in a stage production of Harold Pinter’s Betrayal, directed by Jamie Lloyd. It's all hitting the fan in Kin Season 1 Episode 3.
Emotions are running high, leading to decisions with dire consequences.
No amount of damage control can stop the havoc now.
So, big reveal -- Amanda slept with Michael when Jimmy was in prison.
It's clearly been on Jimmy's mind lately. Though he says he blames himself, there are definitely some unresolved feelings about his wife and brother. No wonder things are always so tense.
It's an odd thing to bring up now, but it's an effective way for Jimmy to shut down Amanda's suggestion that Michael does the eulogy. Jimmy never "makes her feel guilty" about it, but if that means he can use it as a trump card whenever he needs to, why wouldn't he?
He's got the psychological upper hand because Amanda will always feel bad about what she did.
In my review of Kin Season 1 Episode 2, I mentioned the show's Shakespearean tendencies.

There's only so much a mother can take.
Amanda is put through the emotional wringer on Kin Season 1 Episode 2, a study in parental grief.
The Kinsellas are now setting themselves on a dangerous path that can only lead to more tragedy.
Episode 2 shows us the strengths and weaknesses in Jimmy and Amanda's relationship.
Jimmy's bravado has been scraped away. He's crumbling but still trying to respond to Jamie's death the only way he knows how -- with violence.
Emmett J. Scanlan is beautifully raw as Jimmy. You've never seen a thug so tender. He's clearly distraught. Everyone keeps saying he needs to look after Amanda, but he can barely hold back the emotions that come spilling out of him.
He adored his son, and he loves Amanda desperately enough that he'd follow her behest above all others.
It's apparent that Jimmy is insecure in his relationship with Amanda.

It's all about family on Kin Season 1 Episode 1.
These days, for a crime drama to set itself apart from the rest, the characters and relationships have to be deeply compelling because it ups the stakes of the action. If the characters care about each other, we care about them. Such is the case with Kin.
The love on display within the Kinsella family stands in sharp contrast to the sordid business in which they deal -- drugs, violence, murder, money laundering, and God knows what else.
Kin boasts a tight-knit ensemble cast of Irish power players. The acting is superb and grounded, but with this cast, that's to be expected.
Charlie Cox is Michael, the most subdued member of the Kinsella family, fresh out of prison.
Why Michael was locked up remains a mystery, but I suspect it has something to do with the conspicuously absent mother of his daughter.

Clare Dunne stars in and writes this self-empowering story of a battered Dublin cleaner who builds her own house, directed by The Iron Lady’s Phyllida Lloyd
Clare Dunne is the young Irish stage and screen performer who takes a commanding role in this heartfelt and engrossing personal movie: she is the star and co-writer with Malcolm Campbell (who scripted Lenny Abrahamson’s What Richard Did). The director is Phyllida Lloyd, known for mainstream films like Mamma Mia! and The Iron Lady, and she shows a confident touch with both the subdued moments, the intestine-clenching spasms of domestic abuse and the big C-major chords of emotional uplift. It’s a really unexpected drama: unexpected for a heartwarmer, unexpected for a tough social-realist picture, these being the two genres in which it finds a Venn overlap.

Every streaming service needs a breakout series.
Netflix had House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black, Hulu had The Handmaid's Tale, and Apple TV+ had Ted Lasso.
If the first six episodes are any indication, Kin should be the breakout series for AMC+, and it's all thanks to the superb writing, acting, and directing.
Coming from Peter McKenna (The Last Kingdom) and Ciaran Donnelly (Altered Carbon), Kin focuses on one of the biggest crime families in Dublin, the Kinsellas, and how they process the loss of one of their own.
The beauty of a series like Kin is that none of the characters are guaranteed safety. Instead, the culture of crime families at war ensures that a devastating turn of events could change everything on a dime.
Charlie Cox (Daredevil) plays Michael Kinsella, a man who gets out of prison after several years and is slowly pulled back into his old ways.

Leaving behind a life of crime becomes a difficult affair for recently released ex-con Michael Kinsella (Charlie Cox) in AMC+’s Kin. He’s eager to get a legit job and forget his family’s illegal doings. But when his hot-tempered brother Eric (Sam Keeley) opens fire on members of a cartel, they strike back, resulting in a devastating loss for the Kinsellas. Michael’s grieving sister-in-law Amanda (Clare Dunne) urges revenge, launching a full-scale war. “I have always been fascinated by Ireland’s obsession with gangland figures,” says cocreator Peter McKenna. “They’re like reality stars with guns.” Over eight tense episodes, he takes us into that world, where family ties are tested, dark secrets emerge and no one is truly the “good guy.” But even though the Kinsellas are ruthless, their enemies are much worse, notes McKenna: “And ...

Charlie Cox has played exciting characters during his career, and Michael Kinsella might turn out to be his best to date.
Michael gets out of prison on the series premiere of the new AMC+ drama series, and he quickly finds himself drifting back into his old ways when someone close to him is killed.
I got the chance to chat with Charlie ahead of the debut, and he revealed he was immediately attracted to the project after reading the script.
The actor said he was moved by the fact that the series revolves around this multi-layered crime family who lose one of their own and are forced into an unimaginable situation.
"We meet a man who seems very broken and fragile and delicate. He's quite unlike the rest of the characters."
"What we learn quickly is that that is not how he has been in the past," the star continued.

Starting this Thursday on AMC+, Maria Doyle Kennedy will be seen as Birdie Kinsella in the new Irish crime series, Kin.
Kennedy has been charming audiences since her debut in the movie The Commitments. Her television roles are downright iconic at this point, including her role as Queen Catherine of Aragon on The Tudors, Siobhan "S" Sadler on Orphan Black, and Jocasta Cameron on Outlander.
On Kin, she's Bridget "Birdie" Goggins, one of the sprawling Kinsella family, who run a Dublin drug syndicate.
We managed to catch a few minutes with her to talk about the show, which features a superb cast, including Charlie Cox, Aidan Gillen, Claire Dunne, Ciaran Hinds, and Emmett Scanlan.
There is another highly-acclaimed show set in Dublin about the drug trade, Love/Hate, but Kennedy says that it won't be difficult for Kin to make its own mark on the audience.

Irish gang drama Kin, premiering September 9 on AMC+, unveiled a deadly first trailer and key art for the series today.
The clip zeroes in on a devastating war that has begun by a murder in a family where loyalty is paramount.
Starring Charlie Cox, Clare Dunne (Herself), Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones), and Ciarán Hinds, Kin charts the lives of the Kinsellas, a small but tight-knit crime family embroiled in a war against a powerful drug kingpin, Eamon Cunningham (Hinds).
A boy is killed and his family embark on a gangland war with an international cartel – a war that is impossible to win.
It’s David and Goliath. Out-numbered, out-financed and out-gunned, the Kinsellas find themselves holed up in their Dublin stronghold while their businesses fail, and family members and associates are picked off.
But they have something the cartel does not: the unbreakable bonds of blood and family.

The Academy Award-nominated animated feature “Wolfwalkers,” from Kilkenny-based studio Cartoon Saloon, has won Best Film at the Irish Film and Television Awards this evening.
It is the second time an animated feature has won in the category, the first being Cartoon Saloon’s “Song of the Sea” in 2015.
“Avengers: Endgame” star Josh Brolin presented the award for Best Film. “My own story with Ireland is that at 20 years old I was in Dublin, and I blindly walked into a theatre on a movie called ‘My Left Foot,’ and left a changed man,” he recalled. “With the rest of my very little money that same trip, I saw the Cusack’s do ‘The Three Sisters’ at the Gate Theatre and was again changed. I also read ‘A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man’ that same trip. Ireland has had a massive impact on me, so I just wanted to...

Paul Mescal emerged as one of the breakout stars of 2020 thanks to his performance in BBC and Hulu drama “Normal People.”
Ireland has seen a slew of such acting talent establish themselves in recent years, like Jessie Buckley with her star turn as the pregnant wife of a doomed Russian fireman in “Chernobyl” and Barry Keoghan, who won attention with lead roles in two 2017 films, “Killing of a Sacred Deer” and “Dunkirk.” Keoghan is now BAFTA-nominated for “Calm with Horses,” as is Niamh Algar, whose credits include “The Virtues” and “Raised by Wolves.” Elsewhere Domhnall Gleeson has made a name for himself as General Dux in recent “Star Wars” films, and also in “The Revenant” and “Ex Machina.”
Among the new generation of actors to watch are Fionn O’Shea, chosen as one of the Berlin Film Festival’s Shooting Stars of 2021. A “Normal People” alumnus, O’Shea will next be...
